Grounds Committee The Green Thumbs ...Grounds Committee
Palm Maintenance 101 Palms are the quintessential tree of south Florida and although relatively care-free, some regular main-tenance is usually required. Among the more care-free palms are the Christmas palm and the Foxtail palm – both of these palms are self-cleaning mean-ing they naturally shed the older fronds. For most of the palms on the Isles property (Cabbage, Queen, Pygmy, and Date) regular maintenance is required to keep them looking their best. As part of the annual landscape contract, the BrightView maintenance de-tail crews trim off old fronds and seedpods as needed during their regular rotation on palms under 15 feet in height. Twice per year, in the Spring and Fall, the HOA maintains the Palm trees above 15 feet in height by removing seed pods and fronds. These expenses are in addition to the annual land-scape contract. Fertilizer injections and special soil drenches are scheduled on an as-needed basis to protect the specimen date palms at the entrance. With the hundreds of palms on the property, the HOA recognizes the value in regular scheduled mainte-nance not only to enhance the property but to mini-mize potential damage to tree and property during
hurricanes. ‘It is the nature of the strong heart, that
like a palm tree it strives ever upwards when it is most burdened.’Philip Sydney! Next meeting 9/6/18.

GARDEN CORNER
Updates from BrightView September 2018
The summer season is dragging on, and has been an ex-treme challenge for us due to the heat and rain. The warmer temperatures have increased the growth of turf and plant material, and the increase in rain has also con-tributed to the overall health of the turf and plant mate-
rial. The rain has also had a negative effect on weed control in the beds. The increased rain has sped up the germina-tion of dormant weed seeds, and also makes the spray-ing of the weeds ineffective on many days due to the fact that the weed control is washed off of the weeds before
it can be fully effective. You should expect to see more weeds than normal in your beds, but we will continue to be diligent in provid-ing the quality work needed to keep the neighborhood
looking its best. The turf will continue to be monitored for insects, and I believe we have kept the chinch bug damage to a mini-mum this year. We are hoping for continued rainfall this month, but irrigation will be checking for hotspots and assuring these areas are fixed. The irrigation is being cut back to 1 day per week to try and help with the issue
between some of the homes. The warmer temperatures have decreased the possibil-ity of fungus being an issue, but we will continue to
monitor the situation for you. Mowing will be a weekly service and will include all the usual suspects, mowing, blowing, weed whip and hard surface edging. Bed edging is completed every other mow. The detail crews are currently trimming and will remain hard at work to keep your shrubs beautiful for the season, and will be focusing on weeds in the beds, and keeping palm fronds away from homes and lanai
screens. BrightView appreciates your loyalty and commits to cre-
ating a beautiful place to live. Matt Sievert Account Manager

CERT NEWS
An all CERT member and volunteer meeting was held on
8/9/18 A summary of what has been done recently and plans
for meetings and training for the rest of 2018 was mentioned.
There will be a TEST of the CERT disaster phone tree in the
coming weeks to determine if it is sufficient to notify all mem-
bers and volunteers of an impending disaster to meet.
Two suggestions from attendees at the meeting were made: We need to be sure that all Isles residents who are frail, eld-
erly or in need of special medical care are registered with
Sarasota County’s special program for disasters. Go to
scgov.net on your computer. Click on “I Want To…; then
under the category “Register”, click on “Medical Needs Pro-
gram”. Information there will show you “How to Apply for
Transportation Dependent or Medically Dependent “person.
If you do not have a computer, you can call 941-861-5000 and
ask for the application form to be sent to you. Please let your neighbors/family/friends know that you are
leaving the Isles because of an impending disaster.
Please make sure you have an updated emergency contact
form filled out and on file in the HOA office.
Our next all CERT meeting is scheduled for October 11th at
4PM in the Town Center.
