There is a legend that if it rains on 15th July,
St Swithun’s Day, it will rain for the next
forty days; but if it is sunny on that day the
next forty days will also be warm and
sunny. It sometimes feels that’s true –
especially when looking back at particular
summers!
Turning to the experts, the Royal Meteorological Society says that there are no
records of a 40-day drought, nor of 40 days of consecutive rainfall. They observe
that the middle of July tends to be the time that the jet stream settles into a fairly
consistent pattern. If it lies north of the UK it allows continental high pressure to
move in, bringing warmth and sunshine. If it stays further south we get Arctic air
and Atlantic weather systems, altogether colder and wetter. So what we do get is
a general trend, rather than forty days of the same!
It seems to me that life is rather like that. Sometimes it feels that nothing is going
right and everything seems against us; life is difficult and gloomy. At other times
everything seems to be good and working in our favour; we believe that life will
always be sunny. The reality, of course is that life has both ups and downs,
storms and sunshine, joys and sorrows. Life can be as changeable as our British
weather and sometimes feels very unpredictable.
But the sun continues to shine, giving its warmth and light to the earth even
when we can’t see it. And God is always there for us, even if we feel distant
from him. In Jesus, God has known human life in all its joy and sorrow, all its
storms and sunshine. He knows the joy of friendship and the betrayal of friends,
the celebration of a wedding, the sorrow of death, the agony of suffering and the
life which endures through suffering and death. He is not remote but walks with
us in life, enfolding us in his love, offering us his warmth and his light.
In all the ups and downs of life, reach out to the hand of God - who is reaching
out to you.
With every blessing,
Christine

Report on the Village Shop Association AGMReport on the Village Shop Association AGMReport on the Village Shop Association AGMReport on the Village Shop Association AGM
The recent AGM was attended by 32 villagers, of whom 29 were shareholders.
The key item for discussion was the revised proposal from Sheryll and Jerry. They have confirmed that they have dropped the plans for a tea room, but are still keen to take some ownership of the freehold of the building and have suggested some form of shared ownership. Jerry explained why they wanted to take this approach. The meeting then agreed that the committee should work with Sheryll and Jerry and look seriously at how this might be implemented. This would include investigations as to where a similar thing may have been done elsewhere. Professional advice will be needed at some stage before any final decisions are made. The aim is to
agree a formal proposal which can then be put to shareholders.
Shareholders are delighted to report that two new members were elected to the committee at the AGM, Sharon Ames and
Daniel Romero-Brown. They join the 4 continuing members - Robert Maxwell, John Hay and Penny & Paul Kelly.
Parish Council News
The Parish Council was subject to a detailed independent audit in May to overview processes and procedures
and to ensure good practice. The council is pleased to report the exercise was completed successfully and the
auditor signed off the required governance statement without reservation.
The council is also subject to external audit assessments, but the procedures for this will be changing next
year when more information about council activities and finances will be required to be uploaded to the
council website. The clerk will be carrying out this project over the next few months in order to meet the new
external audit requirements by the spring of next year.
The spring growth means hedgerows and some other overhanging greenery from residential properties. The
council requests householders keep these maintained and cut back to ensure normal passage for pedestrians
and vehicles. It also requests that vehicle owners do not commit a parking offence.
The next meeting of the Parish Council is Monday 3rd of July at 7.30 pm in the village hall. All are welcome.

To improve the choice of training dates, our 10 volunteers will be split into two groups:
Sun 9th July from 11.00 am in the village hall
Sat 22nd July from 3.00 pm in the village hall.
Volunteers are only requested to attend on one of the dates for the 2 hour session, and we hope everyone will be able to attend one of the options. Thank you to those who have already confirmed attendance.
New volunteers are also welcome to join and I would be grateful if they can confirm attendance before the 9th July. The project can continue to recruit volunteers as it moves forward and later August dates are a possibility when additional volunteers express an interest at a later stage.
Volunteers must be aged 18 or over. Equipment is provided.

The season is well and truly under way and we’ve had some
very interesting games.
Playing Oldbury away we were asked to bowl first in a forty
over game
After 9 overs it looked as though we were heading for a
massive runchase with their opening pair putting on seventy runs after
just nine overs, but things were to change and by the drinks interval after
twenty overs we’d held them back to 120 for 4.
A huge collapse then followed with the home side being all out for 128
and Joe McKenna bagging a five wicket haul. We were sniffing success
and an unbeaten 75 not out by Simon Roche ensured a comfortable
victory.
The local twenty over competition, the Pratt Cup, has now started and
having lost our first game to a side representing Hillesley, our second
game was against Kingswood.
This match started in a unique way as were locked out of our changing
room. Fortunately the team locksmith, Ed Holcombe, was on hand to
shoulder charge the door (absolutely and specifically authorised by the
Kingswood team).
Batting first we lost early wickets and slumped to 9 for 3 off 3 overs but
things were to change with the destructive batting of Rich Townend and
Ben Evans taking control of the situation and enabling us to reach a
healthy score of 150 off our twenty overs despite losing all our wickets on
the last ball.
The light was fading on a cold evening and an already overcast sky but a
steady tumble of wickets, with Ben Evans taking 4 for 9, meant that we
bowled the opposition out for 50 runs.
And now to the main event, Vice Presidents’ Day. We are hugely
grateful and fortunate to have some fantastic support from our Vice
Presidents. VP Day is the club’s chance to thank them for the generous
support they give to us. The weather was kind and the sun shone (though
it was a tad blustery) and the tea was spectacular reaching even greater
heights than in previous years. There was a good turn out of support and
club president Chris Marlow thanked the Vice Presidents for their
patronage over the years. Also unveiled was a beautiful hardwood bench
made by club member James Pitt with a generous donation from Vicky
Wilson in memory of her late husband, David, a former vice president.
In an entertaining game the Chairman’s XI was beaten by the club side
but, as always, cricket was the real winner on this truly enjoyable day.
The people have spoken!
“Pupil Voice” is the term given, within schools, to systems that give children a choice or say in the way that their schools are run. As I write, Year 5 are gearing up to take part in a school election which will be modelled on the electoral system of the United Kingdom, as they seek to appoint the chair-person of next year’s School Council. Giving pupils a say in decision making, and taking their opinions into account, are important considerations for us at North Nibley. In Just one way in which we are preparing them to play an active role as citizens of the future, emphasising the importance of democracy – a core ‘British Value’.
We also asked Year 6 (the children getting ready to leave us) two questions, to support them in their reflections. (All 14 leavers have at least one thought in the comments below).
They have been a superb year group. Watch this space - we know they will go on to greatness! Thank you, Year 6, we wish you every happiness and success for future.
Everyone is invited to join with us at the Year 6 Leaver's Service, in St. Martin's Church, 9:30 on Thursday 20th July Best wishes,
Paul Batchelor Head Teacher North Nibley C of E Primary School
1) What is an important lesson that North Nibley
has taught you? “I have learnt how caring people can be.”
“I learnt how to cook!”
“I have learnt to do the right thing, not the thing you want.”
“I’ve learnt how to treat people with respect.”
“I’ve learnt not to be naughty, and not to underestimate anyone
before I know their capabilities.”
“I have learnt about different religions and how to keep myself
safe.”
“I have learnt lots of life-lessons that will remain with me forever.”
“I’ve learnt that everyone fits together like a big family, and that the
teachers are really kind and caring
2) What will you miss about us?
“I will miss P.E. and my friends who will be going to Rednock
(I’m going to KLB).”
“I will miss lots of things such as my friends, teachers, buddies
(Reception), the field, the view and most of all the school.”
“I will miss the football in the playground and the happy vibe
around the school.
“I will miss being with the younger children.”
“I will miss my wonderful friends and all the teachers.”
“I will miss all the people at school.”
July: As the summer term continues we will be preparing our school leavers for their transition to primary school. We
will be going on school visits and making their last term with the pre-school fun. We will continue to talk about holidays,
transportation etc and finish our mural of the seaside.
If you are interested in your child joining our pre-school there are some places available for this year. We operate in North
Nibley Village Hall, Tuesday-Friday 9.00am-3.30pm. Please leave a message on 07842280220 and we will call you back with more
details or drop in anytime and meet our lovely staff and children.
Our Bumps, Babies and Toddlers Group is also in full swing on Monday from 9.30-11.00am in the Village Hall. Each session is
themed with an activity and a healthy snack. Please come along to meet local mums and have a coffee.
"On 25th May 2017 North Nibley Pre-school was reinspected by Ofsted. The inspection went very well, the new report was
published on 15th June with our new rating of "Good". Pre-school thanks everybody for their support over the last year."

TAI CHI see below
Tai Chi With Mark Collins —an experienced fully qualified instructor. The Tai Chi classes at the Chapel will be taking a break over the summer and
recommencing in September. A grant of £250 has been secured from the Barnwood
Trust. This will help the classes operate on a viable basis, including the offer of a free
initial class as a taster session. Why not come along and give it a try?
The health benefits of both Tai Chi and Chi Kung are becoming more widely acknowledged. Research by Western
scientists has documented numerous health benefits enjoyed by people regularly engaging in Tai Chi, such as
reduced blood pressure, increased bone density, improved functioning of the immune system, increased leg
strength and a lower incidence of falls among the elderly. It provides a much needed means to quieten the mind
and relax the body. Practicing Chen style Tai Chi encourages deep, regulated, natural breathing and a calm mind.
“ It’s great. You don’t have to get down on ( or up off! ) the floor, you don’t get breathless, you don’t get sweaty. It’s just a very calm
and gentle way of exercising. It may be coincidence, but I have more energy and feel more flexible since I started tai chi classes. “
