I. The Internet and the World Wide Web

The Internet = gigantic computer network that connects computers across the world.

-Changed communication, working, shopping, fun, World Wide Web = It is a way of accessing the huge collection of information, services, and Web sites available through the Internet.

Only one part of the Internet. Not the same as the Internet.

Internet = Highway Web = Car (that lets you travel the highway)

II. Web Sites and Web Pages

The Web is made up of Web Sites:

• Web Sites = specific location on the Web that contains a collection of related files and resources by a person, group, or organization.

–Web Sites are made up of Web Pages (sub pages)• Book = Web Site• Pages = Web Pages

III. URL – Uniform Resource Locator

• Homes and Businesses have addresses – so do Web Sites!

• This address is called a URL– Unique, distinctive address for Sites and Pages

HTTP – Hypertext Transfer Protocol

The Domain Name-name of the website

The Subpage Name-usually separated from domain name with slash

IV. Getting Connected • Devices used to connect to the Internet is increasing

daily!• To connect with your computer: – Need: 1. Computer 2. ISP 3. Modem 4. Communications Software

(If Wireless – Need Wireless Router)

2. What is an ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Company that sells you access to the Internet, usually for a monthly fee. -ISP Examples: Insight, Windstream, BellSouth, AT&T

3. What is a Modem? Needed to connect computer to Internet.

Modem = Lets your computer send data to and receive data from other computers or to a network. • Manages Internet link/connection between user and ISP. • Gives specific IP Address. (Internet Protocol) • Bandwidth – or the rate of data transmission varies with each. Speed of data is measured in (Bits per second – bps)

kilobits per second (Kbps) (thousands per second) Megabits (Mbps) (millions per second)

Types of Modems MODEM DESCRIPTION Telephone (or dial-up) Modem

Connects your computer to the Internet using telephone lines. Slowest type - speed 56 kbps

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) Modem

Uses telephone line to supply a high-speed Internet connection. Speed 8 to 24 Mbps

Cable Modem Uses your cable television lines to supply a high-speed Internet connection. Speed 384 Kbps to 50 Mbps.

4. What is a Web Browser?

Web Browser = Software program that lets you surf the Web and interact with Web sites.

Ex. MS Internet Explorer, Netscape, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, etc.

-Make sure to have an updated version to access all websites!

V. E-MailElectronic Mail (e-mail) = Communication sent from one person to another, or to many, over the Internet.

Several E-Mail Methods: -Software (Microsoft Outlook) -Web (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo!) -Hand Held Device (cell phone, PDA)

V. E-Mail Continued How does it Work? Message travels over Internet to a person’s unique e-mail address and each network has a unique domain name. - Can pass through several different networks- Process takes few seconds

V. E-Mail Continued Important to Use Proper Netiquette

-Refers to the good manners one uses in electronic communications. • Remember – people can’t read your facial/verbal

expressions through email.

Spam = like junk mail – mail sent in bulk to many people’s e-mail accounts.

Sent for one reason usually – sell you something!

Take Steps to Avoid Spam: *Spam Filters *Don’t Open Emails from Un-known

VI. Can I Trust the Web? “Don’t believe everything you read!”

Important to Evaluate, or assess the value of, Web Sites with a critical eye!

How to Evaluate a Web Site Information Should Be.. Questions To Ask What to Look For

Relevant Does your information relate to your topic?

Use precise keywords in search engine. Check each site.

Reliable Can the author or publisher be trusted?

Is the info biased?

Search for the name of the site’s creator. Who is it?

Is the site selling products or services?

Recent Is the Information up-to-date?

Loop for an update or copyright date at bottom of page? More recent-more accurate.

Verifiable Do other sources give you the same information?

Check other sources (both print and Web) to see if similar.

• Wiki Sites – Sites where any users can log on and add-edit info.

Example - Wikipedia • Certain Videos/Movies

Can be uploaded by anyone. Evaluate the author or creator first. Example – Certain YouTube Videos • Question/Answer Sites

Ask.com, Yahoo! Answers, Answers.com

Acceptable to use as basis or grounds for start of research. But always verify information and use relevant, reliable, & recent sites.

VII. Protect Your Information on the Internet?

• How to keep your information secure, or safe:– Firewall = hardware or software that protects a

computer or network from intruders. – Never give out personal information, unless secure.– Use different user names & passwords for different

sites. – Blocking/Filtering Software – prevents users from

accessing certain sites. Can monitor or record what sites a user has visited as well.

VIII. Surfing the Internet

• Use Search Engines – Website lets you search for other Web pages using keywords.

Examples: Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.

• Home Page – First Web page you see when you open a Site. – Includes Name of Site, Links to other Sites, Table of Contents,

Graphics, Search Boxes, etc.– Usually includes Site Map = Index of all the main pages in the site

that you may use to jump straight to a page without drilling down.

• Drill Down – When you explore Web Site – start with Home Page usually and drill down (clicking on links to open new Web pages within the site to find specific information)

Using Boolean Operators• When searching the Web – best to limit your

search results using Boolean Operators. To Find Web Pages With…

Use These Words or Symbols

Example

An exact phrase in quotes

Use quotation marks “ “

“boston terriers”

Two or more keywords (may not be next to each other on the page)

AND, +, &, or just key a space between words

cats AND dogscats & dogscats + dogscats dogs

One or both keywords

OR Lizards OR snakes

One keyword but not another

NOT, - cats NOT tigerscats -tigers

A combo of specific information

Use a combination of Boolean operators

“pet car” + lizards OR snakes (will find pages with “pet car” and lizards and pages with “pet care” and snakes)
