Adam Frey - Artistic Director Adam Frey travels the globe sharing his virtuoso talent, sensitive lyricism, and connection with audi-ences. Whether Adam’s performing with orchestras, wind bands, brass bands, or in solo recitals, au-diences love his charismatic personality and accessible musical interpretations, and audiences rave over his technical prowess and championship of the euphonium.

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Adam received his musical training at the University of Georgia and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. As a major ambassador of the eupho-nium, Adam has more than 70 works that have been composed or specifically arranged for him.

Adam has played with ensembles the world over, including the world famous Boston Pops, Cheju Symphony Orchestra in South Korea, the Vaasa Symphony Orchestra in Finland, and along with symphonies in Seattle, Oregon, Atlanta, Greensboro, Rome, Athens, and Charleston in the United States. He also performs regularly with wind bands and brass bands that have included Soli Brass in Holland, Point of Ayr in Wales, the National Youth Brass Band of Switzerland and wind bands from Singapore, Germany, Hong Kong, and the United States.

As a teacher, Adam has published articles and reviews internation-ally and served as an assistant editor of the Euphonium Source Book. He serves as president of The Euphonium Foundation Inc., a non-profit established to promote the euphonium, and as Artistic Director of The International Euphonium Institute, North Amer-ica’s largest camp dedicated specifically to the euphonium. Adam also serves as Adjunct Professor of Euphonium at Georgia State University and as an Artist Affiliate with Emory University.

Adam has an impressive collection of recordings that range from his first solo recording, Listen to THIS!!, with piano to Collected Dreams, an enchanting collection of traditional Scottish, Irish, and classical melodies with synthesizer to his partnership with Scott Hartmann, former trombonist with the Empire Brass Quintet, on Little Buckaroos. His pioneering two discs released with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra: Taking Flight and Majestic Jour-ney are the first of their kind for euphonium. He has also released a series of recordings focused on new repertoire for the instrument in 3 volumes entitled, Beyond the Horizon.

David Childs - International Guest King Edward III once said: "If you want to train a longbowman, start with his grandfather." This adage holds just as true for eupho-nium soloist David Childs who was born in 1981, to a family whose name had been synonymous with the euphonium for the last two generations. His grandfather, John was born in the Welsh Val-leys and was a well-respected euphonium player who inspired his sons, Robert & Nicholas to play euphonium. Robert began teaching his son David from an early age and today David is widely re-garded as one of the finest brass soloists of his generation. At the turn of the Millennium he broke new ground for the eupho-nium becoming the first euphonium soloist to win the brass final of the televised 'BBC Young Musician of the Year,’ and in the same year was awarded the coveted ‘International Euphonium Player of the Year’ title, a title he won for a second time in 2004. Since then David has been instrumental in raising the profile of the euphonium in the classical world of music and has not ceased to wow audi-ences with his astonishing technique, extrovert musicality, and engaging stage presence. He has toured extensively performing as a soloist throughout Europe, Australia, the Middle East, Japan, Hong Kong, and the United States. He is a keen advocate of new music and has pre-mièred six concerti for euphonium, including a Royal Albert Hall radiobroadcast of Alun Hoddinott's, 'The Sunne Rising - The King Will Ride.’ Back home in Wales David is Professor of Euphonium at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, and performs regularly as a principal soloist with the world famous Cory brass band. Still in the early stages of his career, David has already performed as a soloist with many of the UK’s finest orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Sinfonia Cymru, and the BBC Concert Orchestra. He has given solo performances at several high profile music festivals including the BBC Proms, Melbourne International Festival, and Cheltenham International Festival. He be-came the first euphonium soloist to give recitals at the Wigmore Hall London, Purcell Room South Bank, and Bridgewater Hall Manchester. Earlier this year David made his debut at Carnegie Hall New York, where he gave the US premiere of Karl Jenkins’ superb Concerto for Euphonium & Symphony Orchestra. This is David’s fourth visit to the United States in 2010 and he is proud to be making his 2nd appearance at the International Euphonium Institute. Together with many other fine euphonium soloists David is helping to lead the way for a new generation of euphonium players worldwide, and in doing so proving the euphonium as a true solo voice.

Patricio Cosentino - International Guest Patricio Cosentino is currently one of the main artists of tuba in South America. He has an intense schedule as an educational soloist and work-ing to help develop a new generation of professional musicians in South America. He has performed chamber and orchestral music and currently works as tubist with the Symphony Orchestra National Argentina and as Tuba Professor at the Conservatory Superior of Music “Manuel de Falla” in Buenos Aires. In 2009, he received his diploma from the Hochschule, Germany in Weimar. His international activities include concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra of Lima, Peru, Orchestra of camera of the Pontifical Univer-sity Javeriana de Bogota, Colombia, Symphonic Band of the Pontifical University Javeriana de Bogota, Colombia, Symphonic Band of the Fac-ulty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires, Argen-tina, Symphony orchestra of Bahia Blanca, Argentina, Symphony or-chestra of Salta, Argentina, Symphonic Band of the summer course of Brasilia, Brazil, Symphony orchestra of Campiñas, Brazil and with the Symphonic Band of Cordoba, Argentina.

Manfred Heidler - International Guest Manfred Heidler (born 1960) joined the Bundeswehr Mili-tary Music Service in 1979 after finishing his apprentice-ship as a printer. He studied at the music colleges in Düssel-dorf, Detmold, and Trossingen (tenor horn/trombone, in-strument pedagogy and conducting). After serving as a sen-ior non-commissioned officer in the 2nd Army Band of the Bundeswehr, he started his music officer training. From 1994 he studied musicology, psychology, and educational science at the universities of Heidelberg and Düsseldorf and attained his doctorate at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf in 2004. In 2006, Captain (Army) Dr. Manfred Heidler was head of the 2nd Air Force Band in Karlsruhe. Since September 2007, he has been working for the Military Music Section of the Armed Forces Office in Bonn, where he is responsi-ble for special tasks. He is also a known tenorhorn and euphonium soloist in Germany and abroad in the USA, Great Britain, Hungaria, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria and works as a teacher of his instruments. Special articles about the history of the tenor brass instruments are written by him and were published in national and inter-national Band journals.

Robert Ambrose - Georgia State University Conductor Robert J. Ambrose enjoys a highly successful and diverse career as a dynamic and engaging con-ductor. His musical interests cross many genres and can be seen in the wide range of professional activities he pursues. Ambrose studied formally at Boston College, Boston University, and Northwestern University, where he received a DMA degree in conduct-ing. Ambrose currently serves as Director of Wind Studies and Ensembles at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Ambrose is also founder and music director of the Metropolitan Atlanta Youth Wind Ensemble a highly select youth wind band comprised of nearly one hundred of the most talented high school musicians from the greater Atlanta area. In addition, he is founder and music director of the Atlanta Chamber Winds a professional chamber winds dectet. As a guitarist Ambrose has performed in dozens of jazz ensembles, com-bos, rock bands and pit orchestras. His rock band "Hoochie Suit," formed with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, received rave reviews throughout the Chicago area and performed for such distinguished guests as Yo-Yo Ma, Larry Combs and Daniel Barenboim.

Roger Behrend - George Mason University A Fairfax, Virginia native, he graduated from Robinson High School before attending Michigan State Univer-sity, where he studied with Dr. Leonard Falcone. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Michigan State University and earned a Master’s Degree in Euphonium Performance from George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia.

Mr. Behrend recently retired as the euphonium soloist and principal euphonium with the United States Navy Band in Washington, DC, after thirty years of total military band service. While in the Navy Band, he appeared as a featured soloist throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. Prior to his tenure in the Navy Band, Roger was a member of The United States Coast Guard Band in New London, Connecticut. He has been a featured artist at numerous prestigious events including state music conventions, ITEA conventions, and The Mid-West Inter-national Band and Orchestra Clinic. Mr. Behrend has also appeared as a guest artist five times in Sapporo, Japan. A strong proponent of the euphonium, Roger Behrend has commis-sioned and premiered over twenty-five works for the instrument. He has also released compact discs, which highlight the euphonium in various genres. Roger Behrend is committed to teaching students and passing on his love of music. He is currently professor of euphonium and tuba at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia and has an active private teaching studio.

Martin Cochran - University of Montevallo Martin Cochran enjoys an extremely active career as a soloist, teacher, clinician, and adjudicator. Martin has

appeared as a soloist with ensembles from Wisconsin to Georgia to the Brit-ish Isles. Some of these include the Marquette University Symphonic Band, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Symphonic Band, the University of Alabama Wind Ensemble, and the Georgia Brass Band. His numerous recital credits include the 2008 and 2007 International Tuba-Euphonium Con-ferences, the U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference, and numerous regional ITEA conferences. Martin has also recently presented master classes at the University of North Texas, Louisiana State University, and Western Michigan University. Martin is a former winner of the prestigious Leonard Falcone International Euphonium Competition and also a former winner of the International Tuba Euphonium Conference Solo Competition, Mock Service Band Competition, and Tuba Quartet Competition as a member of the University of Alabama Tuba Quartet. He has been a member of several award-winning ensembles, including principal euphoniumist with the Georgia Brass Band, and has toured with the Sotto Voce Quartet.

Martin is currently Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Montevallo, where he teaches applied low brass and courses in music education and instrumental pedagogy. Martin received the Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance from the University of Alabama, and degrees in Music Education and Wind Conducting from Louisiana State University, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His primary teachers include Mike Dunn, Alan Baer, and Larry Campbell.

Caryl Conger, Pianist Pianist, Caryl Worthington Conger, continues her passion of musical collabora-tion, performing regularly with wind and brass artists in recitals and conferences throughout the U.S. and abroad including the annual U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conferences and the recent ITEA conferences in Finland and Greensboro. Her special niche of interest has been her collaboration with tuba and euphonium artists including tubists, Daniel Perantoni, Patrick Sheridan, Roger Bobo, and Harvey Phillips, and euphoniumists, Steve Mead, Adam Frey, Roger Behrend, and Brian Bowman.

As a gift to the low brass repertoire she commissioned “Fantasy” by Daniel Crozier for tuba and piano and recorded it with Daniel Perantoni. Caryl attended the University of Kentucky, where she studied piano with Nathaniel Patch, and also the Cincinnati College- Conservatory of Music. In the spring of 2003, she retired from the music faculty of Radford University where she was Director of Accompanying and Director of the Bartok-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev International Piano Competition & Festival. She now lives in Estes Park, Colorado.

Bernard Flythe - Kennesaw State University Bernard H. Flythe recently joined the faculty at the University of Georgia in 2010 as a tuba and euphonium instructor. He is also currently teaching for his third year at Ken-nesaw State University and was named an artist affiliate at Emory University in 2009. Prior to his appointments at the aforementioned universities, Mr. Flythe taught for three years as an assistant professor of tuba and euphonium at Austin Peay State Uni-versity and served four years on the artist faculty at the Sewanee Summer Music Festi-val. He has also served on the faculties of the University of Toledo, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Michigan All State Program at Inter-lochen, the University of Michigan Summer Arts Institute, and the UNC-Greensboro Summer Music Camp. Mr. Flythe has performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Sym-phony Orchestra, and the Nashville Symphony. During the 1992-1993 season, he served as the acting principal tubist with the North Carolina Symphony. As a chamber musician, Mr. Flythe has performed with the Detroit Chamber Winds, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet, and the North Carolina Symphony Brass Quintet.

Mr. Flythe received a bachelor of music degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He earned his master of music and his specialist in music degrees from the University of Michigan. Mr. Flythe’s principal tuba teachers include Fritz Kaenzig, Robert Leblanc, David Lewis, Wesley Jacobs, and Michael Sanders.

Tom Gibson - Kennesaw State University Dr. Tom Gibson comes to Georgia State by way of Washington, DC. He was a trombonist with the U.S. Navy Band in Washington for 6 years. He was twice selected to be their featured soloist on the annual national tour. In addition, he was the Navy Band's featured soloist in Stockholm, Sweden, for the Interna-tional Military Tattoo. He premiered the wind ensemble arrangement of Hin-demith's Trombone Sonate at the Eastern Trombone Workshop in Washington, DC. While a member of the Navy Band, Tom completed his Doctorate in Musical Arts at Catholic University in Washington, DC. Prior to that, he com-pleted a Bachelor's degree at the University of Michigan and a Masters at the University of Northern Colorado; where he was the graduate assistant to Buddy Baker. Tom has had a very active freelance career as well. He can be heard on more than 30 recordings and has performed with James Taylor, Denyse Graves, Clark Terry, Peter Erskine, Nanci Griffith, the Temptations, William Noll Or-chestra, the Four Tops, New York City Lights Orchestra, New Columbia Swing, and others. He has performed in some of the nation's greatest venues, including the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, and Wolf Trap. Locally, he's been heard at Spivey Hall, Woodruff Arts Center, Chastain Park, Roswell Performing Arts Center, Atlanta Jazz Festival in Piedmont Park, Mercer University, Jacksonville State University, Columbus State University, Gwinnett Cultural Arts Center, Valdosta State University, Albany Civic Center, Rialto Center for the Performing Arts, and Birming-ham Center for the Arts. He has also performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland and the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.

Joe Grandsen - Jazz Artist At 38 Years old, Joe Gransden has already performed worldwide and released eight CDs under his own name. Renowned first for the hard bop approach of his trumpet, Gransden’s singing voice has been compared to Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra. Joe is from just north of Manhattan, in Yonkers, New York. Coming from a family full of musicians, Joe’s introduction to music came early on through his father, a gifted singer and pian-ist. "Music has been a part of my life as far back as I can remem-ber,” says the unassuming Joe Gransden. Not long after high school, Joe was on the road as a sideman with the big bands of Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. A widening schedule has found Joe performing at Café 290 in Atlanta, The Jazz Corner in Hilton Head, South Carolina, The Museum of Art and Design in midtown Manhattan, Spivey Hall in Atlanta, Ga and Tehema Golf Club in Carmel, California (where Joe regularly plays events for Clint East-wood). Joe also just released his brand new CD “Close To My Heart.” The recording is a collection of smooth jazz covers and originals written by Joe and Kenny. Joe has been performing with Kenny G and his band around the country for the past year or so. His website is www.joegrandsen.com.

Charae Kruger - Cello Artist Charae Krueger received her training in cello studies at the New England Conservatory of Music where she studied with Laurence Lesser and Colin Carr and received a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance. She also holds an Artist Diploma from the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA. Ms. Krueger re-ceived her chamber music training with Eugene Lehner of the Kolisch Quartet, as well as with Robert Mann and Samuel Rho-des of the Juilliard String Quartet. She has also coached with such artists as Menahem Pressler of the Beaux Arts Trio, Louis Krasner, Felix Galimir and Leon Kirchner. She has played in masterclasses with Aldo Parisot, Janos Starker and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi at the Banff School for the Arts. Since moving to Atlanta five years ago, Ms. Krueger has been appointed principal cellist of the Atlanta Opera Orchestra and the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra. She also performs frequently with the

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Tennessee, where she will be featured as so-loist this season. She enjoys playing chamber music with various ensembles throughout the city, perform-ing with the Amadeus String Ensemble, the Musica Da Camera, the Chamber Music Society of Atlanta and the Lyra String Quartet.

Jamie Lipton - Henderson State University Jamie Lipton is an emerging euphonium soloist who came to international prominence after winning both the ITEC and Falcone euphonium solo compe-titions in 2006. Originally from the Chicago area, Jamie holds degrees from Northwestern University and the University of North Texas, where she is currently a doctoral candidate and teaching fel-low. She teaches euphonium at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. A well-established musician in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex, Jamie is heavily in demand as a private instructor and clinician. She is a former member of the University of North Texas Wind Symphony and a current member of the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, and can be heard on both groups’ recordings. Jamie recently became Professor of Low Brass at Henderson State University.

Tamara Albrecht, Organ Tamara Makdad Albrecht is Instructor in Music History and Cannon Chapel Organist and Choirmaster at Emory University, where she also teaches organ and harpsichord. Her Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education degrees are from Wittenberg University, her Mas-ter of Music degree from Northwestern University. Ms. Albrecht is certified in Level I Orff, Level III Early Childhood Music and Movement Association, and Musikgarten®. She performs as continuo player in chamber music ensembles and leads workshops for children’s church music and classroom music. She is the author of a children's choir resource book, Singing Through the Church Year, published by Morningstar Music. This 150-page volume includes many original compositions for the liturgical year as well as ideas for children and youth choir development. In 2005 Ms. Albrecht won first prize at the Unfinished Works Contest in Los Angeles for the music she composed for a play/cantata entitled The Grief and the Promise which deals with children with AIDS. She is currently pursuing a doc-torate at the Institute of Worship Studies in Jacksonville, Florida

Magdalena Shumanova, Pianist Magdalena Shumanova was born in Pazardzhik, Bulgaria and started her piano studies at the age of four. At the age of six she was accepted in the Secondary School of Music-“Dobrin Petkov”- Plovdiv, Bulgaria. She gradu-ated with a Special Faculty Award for Academic and Performance Excellence in June, 2002. She was the solo-ist with the City Philharmonic Orchestra of Plovdiv, per-forming Saint-Saens' 2nd Concerto for Piano and Or-chestra in the same year. While attending school there, she studied with Julia Girginova and Svetlana Kosseva and received her diploma in Piano Performance and Sec-ondary Specialized Education in music and arts in 2002.

She entered the Florida State University College of Mu-sic in Tallahassee, Florida in 2003 with a full music scholarship. She also received the Tallahassee Music Guild Scholarship in 2002, The Griswold Scholarship 2005-2007 and was recently awarded the Kiwanis Capital Club scholarship. She studied with Dr. Carolyn Bridger and completed her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Per-formance in Spring 2008.

Ms. Shumanova has competed in many competitions during her studies, including the Mount Dora and MTNA Young Artist Competitions in Florida. In addition to competing here in the U.S., she has also competed in Bul-garia in the following competitions: The National Competition for German and Austrian Composers, the First National Competition for Contemporary American Music, the Sixth National Competition for Chech and Slo-vak Music (honorable mention) and the First International Piano Competition "Zeichler" (finalist).

Scott Stewart, Conductor Scott A. Stewart is the Director of Wind Studies at Emory University, hav-ing joined the faculty in the fall of 1999. He serves as music director and conductor of the Emory Wind Ensemble and the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony. He received a Bachelor of Music Education from the Indiana University School of Music, a Master of Music Education from the Uni-versity of Texas at Austin, and has recently completed doctoral studies in Conducting at Indiana University. Stewart's instructors include Ray Cramer, Stephen Pratt, Eugene Rousseau, and Jerry Junkin. Professor Stewart has served as Principal Conductor of the Star of Indiana Brass Theatre, Assistant Conductor of the Bloomington Symphony Or-chestra, and instrumental music instructor at McCallum High School and Lamar Middle School in Austin, Texas. He is a contributing research as-sociate for volumes 2, 3, and 4 of Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, published by GIA. He has conducted several premieres and served as the recording producer for four compact discs.

The Georgia Brass Band

The Georgia Brass Band was founded in 1999 by a group of Atlanta-area brass players eager to explore the challenging repertoire for British-style brass band. The band performed its first concert after just a few months and has maintained an active schedule ever since. The mission of the band is twofold: the band allows talented area musicians the opportunity to hone their individual and collective skills through rehearsals and concerts, and the band introduces local concertgoers to this exciting genre of brass music. Band members are selected by audition or invitation and include some of the finest musicians in the area. All members and staff volunteer their time and talents to the band. The band members represent a variety of profes-sions, including lawyers, doctors, salespeople, freelance and military musicians, business owners, educators, students, computer professionals, a college vice president, a financial planner, and a pipe organ builder. The Georgia Brass Band has appeared on local television, as well as the Atlanta NPR affiliate. The band has performed at numerous concert halls, festivals, churches, and colleges throughout Georgia and beyond. The band has also appeared with a number of renowned brass soloists, including those at the IEI. In recent years the band has achieved national acclaim through its successes at the annual North American Brass Band Association Championships. In 2006 the band made its first appearance in the competition, earning the First Place trophy in the Challenge Section and garnering accolades and rave reviews from all present. In 2007 the band moved up to the highly competitive Honors Section and came in second place, missing a victory by a scant margin. In 2008, the band returned to the Honors Section and took home the coveted First Place tro-phy. The reviewer from 4barsrest.com, England’s leading brass band website, offered effusive praise of the band’s performance, stating “Georgia’s rendition of Journey Into Freedom was stunning. They produced a quite remarkable dark sound, whilst their technique was virtually flawless…a real class act.”
