With Monza gone, the GP2 paddock has saidtheir goodbye to Europe and gets ready for thenal two rounds of the season in Singaporeand Abu Dhabi. But it is a tight schedule forour teams! They quickly packed up everythingin Italy to return to their workshop and from

there have to work non-stop in order toget their equipment ready for airfreight onSaturday which leaves from Amsterdamon a 747 cargo. Together with the teamsequipment, the spare parts, the tyres, and the

panels, thats roughly 90 tonnes shipped offto Singapore and will be delivered on Monday16th of September directly at the track. Theteams will be able to access their freight on

    Tuesday morning.

Still at walking distance from the F1 paddock, ours however will look different from theEuropean one. No more team truck ofcourse. Those stay in Europe. In Singapore, each team will be allocated a 10x9m areato work. Behind it, a 20ft container will be

assigned to each of them to be used as anofce and storage.

And then, on the Sunday night at the end ofthe race weekend, they will have to repack

everything. Their equipment will be collectedon the following Monday to be shipped bysea to Abu Dhabi for the nal event of theseason and the winter tests. Workaholicmuch?

In the wake of his nomination as Force Indiathird driver, ART Grand Prix James Caladowas called upon by his Formula One teamto take part in Fridays rst free practice atAutodromo di Monza. The Brit then jumped

from his F1 machine to his GP2 car for theSeries practice session. We sat down withhim to reect on his busy and exciting day.

James, youve ha quite a ay toay. How are you feelig?

Im feeling mixed emotions because I

wanted to do better in the GP2 qualifying.Eighth was not where I wanted to be. Butthe F1 was really, really cool because itsjust so fast. It took me a good 3 or 4 lapsbefore I felt condent in pushing because

there is a lot more G force and the brakingis quite different. Its huge. But after a while, I

became familiar with everything. I think I wasonly 4 tenths off Paul Di Resta.

What was yourgoal toay? What i ForceIia epect

    from you?

    To stay on thetrack! (Laughs)

I was briefed.Thats why itshard becauseyou need toimpress and youcant crash. I

made a couple ofmistakes, but it isto be expectedbecause there is

so much to remember on the steering wheel andso on. In the end it was ne. It all ran smoothly. Iwas able to give some good feedback and theywere all happy. When I stepped out of the carthey told me good job. The atmosphere was

really good. To be within four tenths was toughbecause I only used one set of tyres and I spentthe ve or ten laps when the tyres were goodlearning and then the tyres went off just like theydo in GP2. Its exactly the same. Its not different.

How challegig was it to jump straight fromthe F1 car to the GP2 car for Free Practice?

You know, I did the young drivers test earlier thisyear and then I went to Budapest for GP2 andthat was quite tough. I mean I had a week off.Today, going from the F1 car into the GP2 was

no problem at all. Its really strange. I was ableto get on it straight away. Even just the two warm

up laps heating the tyres was enough to get usedto no powersteering, just applying the brakesand I was P1 on the rst lap. So its pretty good.

Was it thegreatest ay orthe toughest ay

    of your career sofar?

    It was a busy day,

one of the busiestof my life. I wish Iwas on the frontrow in qualifying inGP2. Even thoughIm actually at out

with doing thingsthe aim is still tobe trying to winthe GP2 Series.

Ahead of the Monza round of the 2010 GP2season Pastor Maldonado was referred to bythe media with the almost universal prex ofrunaway series leader, so strong was hislead in the drivers championship, and hisItalian based Rapax team were abuzz with the

thought of wrapping up the title at home.

But theres many a slip between plan andaction, and the Venezuelans hopes got offto a rough start as he was stripped of hisbest time in free practice for cutting the rst

chicane, dropping back to P21 ahead of alast lap dash which saved his blushes with apush up to 7th. Qualifying went even worse forMaldonado, when a spin at the same cornersaw him beached on the kerb and a red ag

drawn over the session to remove his strickencar: when the session restarted Maldonado

was fortunate to only drop one spot to P8 onthe grid, with ART duo Jules Bianchi and SamBird lling out the front row and a lot of work on

the agenda for the Rapax driver in the featurerace.

Unfortunately for the team, their combinedblood pressure went through the roof almostas soon as the lights went out: up front Birdcruised by his teammate when the Frenchmancut the rst chicane for an eventual rst serieswin for the popular Englishman, but further back

was chaos as a three car pile-up at the nextcorner saw the safety car emerge. The racerestarted a lap later, but Maldonado launchedhimself off the back of Romain Grosjean at therst corner, triggering an accident involving a

further ve cars and a return of the safety car.

The Venezuelan limped on, but cheered upimmensely when Michael Herck collidedwith Sergio Prez, Maldonados title rival,at the restart, with both cars out on the spot:

the Rapax driver was back in the pits for anearly bath two laps later but had one hand on

the title as the Mexican would need to claimthe sprint win and fastest lap to be in with amathematical shot at the title.

Christian Vietoris made a storming start fromthe third row to lead the race out of the rstcorner, and held off race long pressure fromJrme dAmbrosio and Sam Bird to claim asuperb win but, to be fair to the German, all

eyes were further back down the grid: on thesecond lap Prez ran wide at Parabolica, withMaldonado swerving to avoid the concertinaand skittering into the barriers instead. Butwith the Mexican stuck at the rear of the eld,the Venezuelans points lead was safe, and

he celebrated his championship victory on thepitwall with his team as the chequered agdropped.

The Italian round of the GP2 Serieswas held once more at Monza, nicknamed the temple of speed. Its a

race with special signicance for GP2supplier Pirelli, as it is held just half anhour from the companys headquartersin Milan. The pace of life in Italys fashioncapital may be hectic enough as it is but

the racetrack at Monza is one of themost demanding and the fastest ofthe year, especially for the tyres. Thereare three areas at Monza that work thetyres particularly hard: the rst chicane(with heavy braking) the Variante Ascari,

with its rapid changes of direction, and

last but not least Parabolica: a long andopen corner that generates big lateralforces. Monza also features some ofthe fastest straights of the year, so its a

particularly big stress for the tyres.

There are a number of different thingsthat the GP2 teams can do to the tyresthat inuence how they perform: namelyadjusting camber or pressure. This can

be seen in particular on very fast trackssuch as Monza. Camber is the angle atwhich the wheel sits compared to thevertical and it can be positive or negative.GP2 uses negative camber angles, both

at the front and the back. This enablesthe tyre to have a greater contact patchwhile the car is cornering, because of thecentrifugal forces acting on it. But extremecamber angles can compromise braking

and stress the structure of the tyre toomuch. This is because the tyre is only incontact with the ground in the area close

to the internal shoulder, which can causefatigue, overheating and excessivewear. Now lets look at tyre pressure.Low pressures mean that more of thetyre can be in contact with the ground.

This means better grip and performance. But this puts stress on the tyre and candiminish driving precision, because ofthe movement of an underinated tyre.Excessively high pressures, by contrast, reduce the contact patch. This reduces

    performances and can sometimes lead

to patches of overheating. This is why itsvital to stick to the optimal tyre pressureand camber settings. Pirelli issuesrecommendations to all the GP2 teams

as to which camber settings and tyrepressures to use. Staying within thoseparameters allows the teams to extractthe maximum performance from thetyres without compromising durability:the Holy Grail at a rapid track like Monza.

The 2011 championship came down to the wire

in Monza, with ART teammates Valtteri Bottasand James Calado squabbling over any gain:

it was still a surprise to see the pair opt out

running in second practice, but the advantageof new tyres was too big for them to ignore,

along with the difference in track temperatures

from qualifying. Its on such calls that titles arewon or lost.

A brilliant lap in qualifying saw Adrian Quaife

Hobbs keep a mathematical shot at the title, but with the ART pair starting P5 and 6 (with the

Finn just ahead) he had little realistic chance.Bottas jumped up two spots at the start, mugged Quaife Hobbs on lap seven, and took

the lead from Nico Muller two laps later with

Calado following in his wake, but their ght wasdelayed by a safety car when Quaife Hobbs

    crashed at Ascari.

Bottas made the better restart but Calado

fought back, and the attack came on the nallap: the Finn defended hard at the rst chicane,

pushed his teammate wide at the second one,

and Bottas sealed his championship win by justunder 0.4 seconds.

Calado could have tied on points with his

teammate if he won the sprint race and tookthe fastest lap, and the Briton easily led for

ve laps before running wide and allowing

Mitch Evans through: Calado clipped the kerb, pushed the Kiwi driver off and picked up a drive

through in the process, with Antonio Felix da

Costa collecting the nal win of the season.

I have the ag of Italy of

course, plus the chequeredag since Im a racing

    driver. I have added some

    black bands on the helmet

to make the colour moreaggressive. I have kept thisdesign pretty much since

    my karting days.

I chose the livery when I

raced in karting. This yearI changed my designer to

modify it. I have my nickname

Fuma on the back and my

cool avatar. In Italian Fumameans smoke, so the shorttext means Fuma kills it on

track. The image on the back

is a Star Wars theme as Ima big fan of that. I like bright

colours as my Dad wants to

see me clearly in the car.

I have the San Marinese ag

as thats where Im from. I alsohave a little ladybird on the

helmet as if they land on you

    thats supposed to bring you

good luck. I havent used vastamounts of colour everywhereas I like the appearance of the

    carbon bre. The basic design

has stayed the same since theearly days.
