Nominations are now open for the position of Green Industry Hall of Fame Inductee,

announces the event’s organizing committee. Candidates must have been in the Green Industry for over 20 years and “…have contributed to making significant changes that impact the industry in a positive way.”

Induction Ceremonies will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Ayres Hotel & Suites Ontario Convention Center, 1045 E. Holt Blvd., Ontario, CA 91761; (909) 390-7778.

Richard Daigle and Charles Nunley, Green Industry Hall of Fame Co-Founders, list the following purposes of the Green Industry Hall of Fame:

• To honor individuals, past and present, for their significant impact on the Green Industry• To preserve Green Industry equipment from previous eras• To educate the public about the profound impact these individuals and pieces of equipment continue to have on the Green Industry today

The inductees for the 2010 ceremonies were honored earlier this year and included Nelson Colvin, Sharon McGuire, Miles Rosedale, Burton Sperber, Gary Vallen, Dave Davis, Robert Cordoza and Tony LaFetra.

Previously, Hall of Fame inductees had been honored at the Irrigator Tech Educational Fair conducted by Hall of Fame Co-Founder Richard Daigle. However, the 2010 Induction Ceremonies were greatly expanded and were attended by scores of what many would consider the “Who’s Who” of the Green Industry today.

To nominate an individual for possible induction into the Green Industry Hall of Fame, visit www.greenindustryhalloffame.org.

Cutoff for nominations for the 2011 inductees is February 3, 2012.

SAVE THE DATE FOR THE EVENT. More specifics will be published as soon as they become available.

Times are as difficult as they have ever been, especially for those of us who run our own

businesses. We entrepreneurs have some common attributes that are helping us survive during these tough times. Qualities such as tenacity, vision, ability to make adjustments quickly, and that fire in the belly that drives us to succeed all come to mind.

These things and more are keeping our ships afloat while others have long since watched theirs sink.

But there is an attribute of entrepreneurship that may be hurting you if you are not aware of it. That attribute is a big streak of independence. Sure, it’s great not to have to answer to “the man”…because you are “the man…or woman.” But you can’t let that spirit of independence keep you from associating with others of similar mind and goals. In reality, all of us in the Green Industry are in the same boat right now. And the more we gather together, work together, even play together…the better chance we have of overcoming the adversity we now face.

All that is to say: GET INVOLVED IN YOUR INLAND EMPIRE CHAPTER and State CLCA. You will meet people who can be of great help in many areas of your

business and even personal life. But you are missing out on these great relationship benefits if you try to “go it alone.” Being a “lone wolf” may work for a while for a writer or thinker who is contemplating his or her navel, but it sure does not work well in business. Besides, look at all the fun you are missing out on, like the fabulous Christmas party we just had at the Mission Inn. THAT was fun…and the contacts and relationships that can develop from attending an event like that are priceless.

We are fast approaching the end to another Chapter year, and I want to thank the IE Board for their dedication and exceptional service to our members and to the Green Industry in general. And I want to thank all the members who have attended our events this year for helping to make my job as President a lot easier. Your support is very much appreciated.

May you and your family enjoy a blessed Christmas and a very Prosperous New Year. – Richard

This year’s show is titled: Back in the Game and all Green Industry professionals and students are invited to attend! We’ve got lots of NEW at this year’s show

to get you Back in the Game and keep you on your A game!

Brought to you by the California Native Plant Society, Norman’s Nursery and the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wildflowers and Native Plants, Native Plant Bingo is a new addition to CLCA’s Landscape Industry Show for 2012! Horticulturists and show attendees of all skill levels are invited to enter to win $100 cash and a book on native plants! The game is similar to church bingo and participants will explore the show floor looking for specially marked native plants. You don’t have to buy-in to play and everyone is eligible to win! Fun and easy, this game is sure to plant a smile and a card with five in a row could be a winner. Whether you’re a novice or plant expert, hopefully you’ll see or learn something new with the great diversity of California natives that will be placed around the show floor.

Are you a good designer? You’ll want to try this year’s “Designer’s Challenge” brought to you by the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD). Try your hand at a quick sketch and see if your design is a winner! Like Pictionary and not a drawing contest, this contest shows how quickly you can think on your feet and communicate your finished design to your client. Speed is good, but quality of design is just as important, so the first one done isn’t

necessarily the winner. This fun, interactive, pen and paper challenge will literally have you thinking on your feet and it will be over before the ink is dry!! If you can play Pictionary, you can play Designer’s Challenge. The difference is, can you design?

CLCA’s new Technology Café is sure to replace the techno savy 12 year old and even better, those demonstrating their apps are industry peers and professionals. Feel free to ask even the simplest of questions in a stress free, painless, technology learning environment. Here you can see it, touch it and click it while learning how this technology will help your business. Featured here are industry apps for the iPhone and Droid, check out an iPad, and learn about networking on LinkedIn and Facebook. We’ve invited several of the industry smart phone apps CLCA LinkedIn Group members found useful in our technology discussion. These group members are already using this technology in their own businesses and recommended it to other members. Stop by and learn how you can process credit card payments, manage projects, calculate sprinkler times, track your fleet, access a plant care guide and more, all quickly and easily from the field using your smart phone. You’ll “like” it!

Everybody stand still and no one gets hurt! Just like in the movies, workplaces would be

safe if nobody moved. In landscaping, however, movement is constant. The “workplace” changes hourly or daily as you move from site to site and across a site, and hazards abound. Technicians will use up to eight different pieces of equipment every day, all while often moving over

sloped terrain, moving at high speeds, sometimes working in wet or very hot conditions, working while fatigued and using equipment that cuts with great force. It’s hard to think of many occupations with more potential hazards.

So as an employer or supervisor, what do you need to do to keep employees safe and do your due diligence? In a nutshell, if you look at the general duty clause in OSHA legislation, you need to keep the workplace free of hazards. How do you do that when the equipment your staff uses and situations they use them in are so challenging? Unlike a factory setting – where you can lock out hazards or cordon off a dangerous area – a landscape employer will need to teach staff members how to avoid the hazards that are ever-present with landscape equipment. You need to explain every single way that you think an employee can be hurt by his equipment. If it’s a known hazard, you have to tell him about it. Even if it’s a remote possibility. That’s due diligence.

Let’s take hedge trimmers as an example. In over 25 years in

the landscaping business, these are the different ways that I have seen an employee be injured while using gas-powered hedge clippers:• Cut hand: employee lost balance and instinctively grabbed the moving blades to regain balance.• Injured from impact of a fall: employee fell after losing balance while standing and working from a ladder.• Soaked with gasoline: employee’s upper body was soaked with fuel when a loose cap released. Thankfully, there was not an ignition source, since fuel is flammable. • Injured hand due to improper handling: employee was handling the equipment by placing one hand under the gear box and reaching to cut a tall hedge instead of using both handles. • Sliced hand due to footing hazards: employee stepped into a window well while trimming a shrub and sliced his hand as he grabbed at the clippers while falling.• Stung repeatedly by wasps: I myself sliced a wasp nest and was stung over a dozen times; thankfully, there was not an allergic reaction.• Cut pants and minor leg cuts; many employees have cut their pants or had minor leg cuts as they let the cutting blades contact their legs while resting the tip of the still-moving cutting blades on the ground.• Shocked by electricity: employee was shocked when

cutting through a live electrical cord; thankfully, there was not a serious injury.• Lost hearing: employees deal with a noise hazard and sometimes opt to not use hearing protection. Noise is a serious hazard, especially with this machine. As landscape employers and supervisors, the only way to keep our employees safe from these hazards is to make them aware of the hazards. In other words, we need to teach our employees to avoid these hazards through proper hazard awareness and instruction on correct operating techniques. We cannot make the hazards go away, or lock them out.

So now we address the initial question: are tailgates good enough? The answer is only yes if you have done a tailgate session on that piece of equipment before the employee ever uses that piece of equipment. What good is a tailgate session on hedge trimmers in July when the employee has been using them since May? If he’s injured prior to the training session, you’re caught—you’ve not given him the training and hazard awareness that he needs in time. For that reason, tailgates are generally only good as refreshers.

To avoid liability and prosecution you must do some basic training prior to the employee using the equipment. To properly train an employee you need to cover a list containing all of the basic operating techniques, plus all of the known potential personal hazards. While you’re at it, why don’t you include bystander hazards (how a bystander or co-worker could be injured by that piece of equipment), plus property hazards (how the employee could damage the equipment or the client’s property in the course of using that equipment). This way, every known possible bad outcome

from accident or misuse is covered. Just think of all the dumb, avoidable accidents you’ve witnessed or had to deal with as an owner or manager. Put your knowledge to work for your employees; make them aware of the bystander, property, and – most importantly – personal hazards, and watch personal injuries and expensive damages disappear.

Finally, the biggest benefit that you’ll get by training is improved productivity. A new employee is woefully unproductive compared to the group. He’s either got no experience, or often, lots of experience and bad habits! Reduce the productivity gap of new employees by investing some time or money into some basic training. Consider creating or improving your training system, use PLANET resources, hire a consultant or buy a training system off the shelf from a provider.
