The India Mission for E v a n g e l i s m In January of this year, Samuel and I (Rebekah) spent six weeks at Peniel Bible Seminary and Children’s Home. We spent most of our time talking to seminary students, faculty, and the residents of the Children’s Home. The Children’s Home is for under-privileged children from all over India. While some of the children are orphans, many are here because their parents can’t afford to take care of them or because they have a single parent who works in another country. There are children from villages close by and others from as far away as Nepal (A three day journey by train). Most of the children speak at least two languages—the most common being Malayalam, Hindi and English. While they are at Peniel, they are fed, clothed, educated, tutored, and attend chapel and Sunday school. In January of this year, Samuel and I (Rebekah) spent six weeks at Peniel Bible Seminary and Children’s Home. We spent most of our time talking to seminary students, faculty, and the residents of the Children’s Home. The Children’s Home is for under-privileged children from all over India. Jaison

Jaison is fifteen years old, speaks four languages, (English, Malayalam, Ta-mil and Hindi) and is in 9th grade. He likes to play soccer and hang out in his room with his friends. He loves science, agriculture and studying the envi-ronment. There are huge problems with pollution in India and Jaison wants to help solve that problem and learn more about what he can do to help take care of the earth. He says while other children’s homes he has stayed in are unhappy places, Peniel is peaceful and happy. His favorite Bi-ble verse is Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the riv-ers, they shall not over-whelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

Hendrick

Hendrick is old for his age. He is nine, already in fifth grade and wants to be a pastor when he grows up. He enjoys studying at Peniel because he can go to the men studying at the Seminary and ask them questions about God and homework. Singing in chapel is his favorite ac-tivity. He sings us a short verse from his favorite song. He says it’s about how his mother loves him, but Jesus loves him more than his mother ever could. His desire for Peniel is that they spend more time in Chapel learning about God. His favorite Bible verse is Revelation 3:20

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

Anugraha

Anugraha is twelve years old and lives at the Peniel Children’s home with her younger brother, Prathyash. She is in 5th grade and has been living at Peniel and attending the children’s academy for six years. She is from Kerela, and says she strug-gles with languages, but in spite of that speaks Ma-layalam, English and Hindi fluently. Her favorite sub-ject is science, she says it comes easily to her, and she wants to be a doctor when she grows up. When she’s not studying, she enjoys ping pong, break dancing and eating fish curry. Her favorite color is the blue of the sky and her favorite Bible verse is Psalms 42:1 because it talks about how we long for God.

As a deer pants for flow-ing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.

Simi

Simi is fourteen years old, in ninth grade and has lived at Peniel Chil-dren’s home for eight years, more than half her life. Her favorite foods are snacks, especially the sweet ones. She en-joys spending time with a M.div student named, Anu who often plays, talks and prays with her. At Simi’s home in Cha-lakudy, Kerela, (an hour’s drive from the Children’s Home) there is a family member with a psychiat-ric disorder. She wants to become a doctor when she grows up so she can help heal people with mental illnesses. She en-joys playing Badminton and reading. Her favorite Bible verse is John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eter-nal life.

Observations of the Children’s Ministry by Gary C. Meyer

Many children in this world are living on the streets without a bed at night, without any education or health care, scavenging for food, and missing the love of parents. Others may have a home but the resources are very limited because of parents who cannot find work. The children find themselves seeking food and shelter at other locations.

During my recent trip to India I observed some of these children in the children’s home located on the campus of Peniel College and Seminary in the southern state of Kerala. Some of the children are orphans while others come from homes that cannot afford to support them. There are currently 40 children housed on campus, fed three times a day, and provided an education right on campus in the accredited K-5 Children’s Academy. In addition to the enrolled students from the campus some local off-campus families send their kids to the academy having recognized that this institution provides a superior education second to none, even the public educational system.

The spiritual life of the students is also enhanced as they study Christian principles, engage in de-votional times, attend services, and learn the songs that honor the Lord Jesus Christ. I heard them singing with smiles on their faces and an exuberance that was contagious even if I did not understand a word they were singing.

The facility is licensed to accommodate 100 children (50 boys and 50 girls) and there are more chil-dren who could be taken in but the funds to pay for all this right now is limited to 40 by the giving of donors. One child can receive all this care for about $35/month. Pray that God will provide the funds and consider what He would have you do.
