The Importance of Management and Leadership Involvement in the Health & Safety and LPS™ Process
ARCHIMEDES Assignment for All Managers and Supervisors
December 2007
Management / Leadership Style Expectations
at ARCADIS
• Per Steve Blake – CEO of ARCADIS U.S: “We want a management / leadership style (at ARCADIS) that is based on:– Involvement – increase stewardship activities to reduce
loss (this was not one of Steve’s but important to H&S)– Trust– Respect– Motivation– Honesty and openness– Balance – focus on profit with concern for the employee– Appreciation – you can’t do it alone”
• What do these have to do with H&S, including LPS?
The Importance of the Manager / Leader in the
ARCADIS H&S Program, including LPS • Involvement
– Employees appreciate a genuine concern from management
• Trust– Employees trust you to do the right thing
• Respect– Allows staff to stop work when necessary
• Motivation– Encourages staff to effectively use their H&S tools
• Honesty and openness– During feedback and review of LPOs, JSAs, NLIs and IIs
• Balance – focus on profit with concern for the employee– Demonstrates our commitment to protecting our staff
• Appreciation – you can’t do it alone – Fosters recognition for positive H&S behavior, so we all succeed
A Health & Safety Program Built on ARCADIS
Management / Leadership Expectations
• Results in:– Fewer injuries and incidents– Lower costs– Improved morale / confidence– Increased productivity and quality
• By: – Demonstrating that all levels of the organization are accountable
for H&S performance – Identifying / correcting at-risk personal and job factors– Establishing controls to prevent them from recurring in the future– Maximizing the effectiveness of each work process– Proactively foreseeing / eliminating the potential for loss– Maintaining effective communication
Management / Leadership Involvement ― Why?
• Involved managers / leaders steward this participation
• The overall direction of the H&S program, including LPS, is provided from the top down
• Determination of specifics, such as how to best use LPS and other H&S tools, is from the bottom up.
• All levels must be actively involved, with each person having the opportunity to develop ownership and identify with the daily use of LPS tools and activities.
Management / Leadership Involvement Helps Eliminate Hazards before a Loss Occurs
Why?• When managers / leaders are involved and participate in
the development of JSAs and the performance of LPOs, LPS field assessments, and near-miss investigations, employees are more likely to do so, as well.
• The majority of time spent on LPS tools and activities should be proactive. In other words, most LPS efforts should focus on identifying and eliminating hazards and risks before an injury or other type of loss takes place – not after the fact.
Management / Leadership Involvement Helps to Integrate LPS Tools and Activities into Daily Business Activities
Why?• Managers / leaders can assist in integrating H&S,
including LPS, into daily business activities • LPS and other H&S tools and activities should be:
– Designed and developed to be integrated into daily business activities
– Performed as part of the job, including:• H&S planning
• Communication of best practices and lessons learned
• TRACK (SPSA)
• JSAs
• Near misses and other incidents
• LPOs
