Born 287 B.C. in Greek colony of Syracuse on the island of Sicily

Archimedes father was Phidias who was a worthy astronomer.

Was related by blood to King of Syracuse, Hieron II.

First expedition was to the city of Alexandria, Egypt

First invention of his was Archimedes screw pump - made while he was in Egypt

Spent some time in Spain to aid the Spanish during the English Maritime War.

Returned home started to work for Hieron II

Discovered volume when King Hieron II wanted to know if his crown was pure gold. Archimedes discovered solution while taking a bath from how much water overflowed the tub.

During second Punic war in 214BC, King Hieron II asked Archimedes to make inventions of war-machines for defense against Roman general Marcellus(second Punic War laid siege to Syracuse)

Archimedes was unsure about helping because he didn’t want to hurt anyone but in the end agreed to the job.

Archimedes claw (utilizing pulley system) – a type of crane with a hook that was able to life attacking ships partly out of the water.

Burning mirrors- Archimedes figured out you can use mirrors to concentrate the sun’s rays onto a small area and cause exposed areas to start to burn. Used to ketch attacking ships on fire.

Compound Pulley- Which is a rope, belt, or cable that runs over a wheel in a groove. They are used to change the direction of an applied force or transmit rotational motion.

Made improvements to Leonardo Da Vinci’s steam cannon, Zhang Heng’s Water clock, and the ancient catapult system

Odometer- indicates distance traveled

Death A Roman Soldier killed Archimedes after the siege of Syracuse

because Archimedes would not follow the Soldier’s orders. When Marcellus, Roman commander, herd about Archimedes death, he

ordered a monument be put up in Archimedes honor.
