HOW TO

TAKE BETTER HOLIDAY PHOTOS

Linda Scannell is a wedding and portrait photographer based in Warwickshire. If you’d like to talk to Linda about her wedding photography services, please give her a call on

Have a wonderful time!

1. Try a different viewpointDon’t just take the first picture you see. Look at your subject from different angles to get a more interesting view. E.g. If you’re taking a picture of something tall, like a tower, crouching down and shooting up at it will emphasise its height.

2. Include peopleTo make your pictures more personal and tell the story of your holiday rather than just record where you went, include your friends, family or the people you meet in some of your images. Try getting them to interact with one another or do something to interact with the subject, even if it’s just gazing out at the view — they’ll be more relaxed and it makes a more interesting picture than the classic “this is grandma standing in front of...” pictures that you see in lots of family albums. Including people also helps to give viewers a sense of scale.

3. Get in closeIt’s important to get the big scene-setting landscape shots, but photographing the details will give the viewer more information about where you went too.

4. The rule of thirdsImagine your picture divided into three equal parts horizontally and three equal parts vertically. If you place your subject at any of the four points where the lines between the parts intersect, you’re likely to create an interesting picture. (Sometimes you’ll get an even better picture by breaking this rule but it’s worth experimenting.)

5. Leading linesLines in the landscape, like a path or fence, for instance, are ideal for leading the viewer’s eye into the picture.

Summer’s here and if you’re lucky enough to be going away for a break, you’ll probably want to take some pictures to remind you of your holiday. The good news is a fancy camera isn’t essential for taking great photos; you just need to know a bit about composition. Here are my top 5 tips for improving your images, regardless of whether you’re using a top of the range camera or a cheap camera phone.

Expert advice from Nikki Vincent, The Stratford Wedding Co. T: 0844 357 4777 E: [email protected] W: www.stratfordweddingcompany.co.uk

As a wedding planner I am often asked what alternatives there are to traditional wedding customs. One of the most popular to replace is the guest book and there are lots of alternative ideas on how your guests can send you their thoughts. Many people nowadays want something that hey can see all the time to remind them of their special day and not packed away in a box in the loft.

Wish Tree: I love these! There is something just so elegant and mysterious about them, if done properly. You can hire them, have them made or make one yourselves. Willow is the best branch to use from this country. Mazanita is truly the best but you can’t get this in the UK. You can colour coordinate the branches, plant pot, hang fairy lights or butterflies from them. The idea is then to have tags on ribbon that your guests can sign and put their thoughts on and then they hang it on the tree. Keep them in a box and open them on your first anniversary. Why not have a random question for your guests to answer on each tag ?

Fingerprint Tree: This is a personalised picture of a tree that comes with different colour paint pads. Your guests put their fingerprint on the tree as leaves then their name and a message to give you a lasting record of your special day. Perfect if your guests like getting messy!

Postcards: If you like to travel then collect postcards from all the places you’ve been and would like to go. Guests can sign the back of them and post them into a postbox. You can then put these in an album so you can see both sides. Might also be interesting to see which postcards your guests choose.

Photo Frame: Most photographers will do this for you nowadays so always ask. The idea is that your guests sign the mount board that will frame a picture from your wedding with a special pen. Some photographers will even take a picture of all your guests in the day and print it so it can be signed by everyone at night. Don’t worry if your photographer won’t do this, most of your guests will get the idea if they sign an empty frame or you could even put an

engagement picture in there for the time-being. The great advantage of having this as your guest book is that you can hang it in your house and take a peek whenever the mood takes you and there’s no clutter. The slight disadvantage is that there isn’t much room for guests to put their thoughts or best wishes down so you will find most people will just sign.

Vintage Typewriter: Great for a vintage wedding. Have a vintage typewriter set up with some old-fashioned paper on hand. Let your guests type their messages to you, you will certainly have a good laugh at their spelling.

Caricaturist: Hire a caricaturist to draw your guests then ask your guests to sign the picture. what a unique and fun way to remember who you had to share your day and it will certainly bring a smile to your face in years to come.

Coffee Table: I’m sure you’re thinking, mmmm maybe not, however hear me out. Why not get a special pen that will write on ceramic tiles and then make a table out of them? What an amazing way to remember your special day and every time you sit down with your skinny vanilla decaf cafe latte you can read the beautiful wishes that all your friends sent you on your prefect day.

Plates: You can buy all sorts of plates with special pens for your guests to sign. They are a great momento with minumum clutter but they don’t have much space for messages. Another idea is to get a silver platter with a diamond pen so your guests can engrave their names.

Video Dairy: There are several ways to do this. You can hire a videographer who

you can arm with a list of questions you want your guests to answer, which is also a great ice-breaker for those guests who get camera shy. They can either set up an area and sit your guests down to talk to the camera or walk around the room, or even better BOTH. Why not jazz it up a bit and have some silly hats or costumes for them to wear. You can also hire video booths for the night and let your guests do it themselves. The results are truly hilarious and certainly a great reminder of such a beautiful day.

Instant Photo Book: Have you got an old Polaroid camera somewhere? Why not let you guests take their own photos and create an instant guests book?

Online guestbook: Are you having a wedding website? If you are add an online guest book. Perfect, no clutter at all, its all electronic.

Garden pebbles/rocks: Get your guests to sign pebbles. You could have a fish tank at the reception for your guests to drop them into to and then you can display them in your garden afterwards.

Something unique to you: Last but certainly not least think about what you enjoy. Do you play a sport or have a hobby? If you do is there something that you can use from this that your guests can sign? Some great examples are a skateboard, flower pots, guitar, football, hockey stick, tablecloth. I am sure you can come up with many more. Just find the right pen and a way to seal the writing and you can have a permanent reminder of all your lovely guests every time you do something you love.

If your computer starts up

If your computer starts up normally, but then has a problem once it has started, such as the screen freezing or it is running slowly, there are a number of tricks you can try. 1) Reboot your computer This has become a cliché but it does solve many desktop and laptop problems. It’s quick and easy so is always worth trying first. If your computer screen has frozen you can usually force a shut down by holding down the power button until the computer turns off, and then start up again. If it won’t turn off, you can force a complete shutdown - with a desktop PC by turning off the power at the mains and a laptop by removing and replacing the battery.

2) Back up your files Even small problems, such as your computer running slowly, could be symptomatic of a bigger issue. To avoid losing important files, photos and music if the problem escalates, back up all your files.

3) Run computer security checks If things aren’t working as smoothly as they should or you’re frequently experiencing problems, run a security software update. Some particularly malicious malware or viruses can stop your computer from starting, but more commonly they will just make your system sluggish. A security scan will check against some basic virus or malware activity.

4) Remove recently installed programs If your computer has problems just after you’ve installed a device or a software program – whether you’ve installed it from a disc or downloaded it from the internet - uninstall the last piece of software you put on your system. To do this safely and fully, go to the Windows Control Panel (accessed from your Start menu) and select ‘Add or remove programs’. Once you’ve uninstalled the program, check for improvement. If everything’s working OK again it must have been a new software issue.

5) Don’t use more than one antivirus program It’s vital to protect your computer with appropriate security software. But running two antivirus programs on your computer — for example, running Kaspersky and Norton — can

cause conflicts on your computer. This can make your computer sluggish and can cause computer crashes and stops each program from working. Make sure you uninstall an old antivirus program before installing a new one.

If your computer won’t start up 1) Check your connections If you’ve got a desktop computer, you may be having computer problems because one of the cables inside the machine has become loose, particularly if you’ve moved your computer around recently. Open up the desktop casing (not the monitor) – you’ll probably need a screwdriver. Check that all the cables are firmly pushed into their appropriate sockets.Laptop loose connections are less likely, but if you’ve recently installed new memory it’s worth making sure that you’ve firmly connected it.

*None of our solutions risk further damage to your computer if you follow the steps carefully.

The Animal Rescue& Rehabilitation Society

Over the past month we have managed to rehome Daisy and Duke to a wonderful home in Lutterworth, Leicester and their new favourite game is ‘chase each other as fast as possible up and down the stairs’. Gizmo the Turkish Van x went to new friends and volunteers for the rescue who live in Rutland, Leicestershire, they were taken with him so much after coming to see me to volunteer for the rescue they thought he would fit in perfect with their other 4 cats and dog, he now reportedly loves all the attention anyone can give him and lives up to his breed in being a fan of water. Splash our little boxer x pup that was saved from being drowned and filmed for amusement by some thuggish idiots in London has also gone to her new home.

We also took in two 4 month old females, a Lurcher who we named Star and x-breed Charm. Both were saved from a pound in Kent. Star looked ill on arrival and was taken to the vets, she was suspected of having Parvovirus but after a few sleepless nights of constant monitoring with small amounts of water and later small amounts of food throughout the day she managed to pull through believing she may have suffered Gastroenteritis, which in itself is still a nasty virus for a young undernourished puppy.

A week later Charm arrived, on arrival seemed quiet but happy in herself, suddenly came down with the same symptoms as Star. Charm was rushed to the vets and was admitted and put on a drip. Charm unfortunately wasn’t going to be as lucky and died from Parvovirus a few days later. We informed the pound where both dogs came from so that they could try and prevent further infections from spreading and hopefully they have. Pleased be warned Parvovirus is a killer in puppies if they are not vaccinated against such diseases and can still affect adult dogs who are not vaccinated. We paid over £600.00 for Charm at the vets, one course of vaccinations can cost as little as £35.00, it seems very worth it to me to save a dog’s life.

We would really like to hear from any farms, stables or if you have any outbuildings that would like to accommodate some feral cats and kittens. We have a female feral cat and her three kittens arriving next week and we are hoping to tame the kittens but would love to be able to offer the mum somewhere to live happily away from humans. We are also expecting another 3-4 adult feral cats where the farm owner has died and they now need to be moved to a new location. They are absolutely brilliant at keeping the rat and mice population down and all they require in return is regular food and somewhere to hide in the hay or straw.

Next month I will be talking to you about the ‘TARRS Re-build Project’. What it involves and how you can help.

Charm

Okay, folks. It’s finally here. What we’ve all been waiting for. No, not sunny (?) weather. Not Beyoncé’s new album. Not even the Leamington Peace Festival.

It’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, the latest and last instalment of the massive films made of J.K Rowling’s novels. Millions of people from around the world are waiting for the familiar theme tune to start playing, and then they will finally see the last of an epic they have been watching for years. The series has so many dedicated followers, its makes me wonder why it is so successful.

Having only recently read the series, and found it captivating, I think it must just be because Harry is an ordinary boy in an extraordinary situation. His thoughts and actions are so real, despite the story being completely fantastical, people have practically accepted the characters as existent. They have got to know the wizarding world as a new take on our own. They have fallen in love with the magic of Harry Potter.

As promised, local garden designer, Lucy Bravington brings you her review of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2011.

Gardener’s CornerLucy Bravington

It may seem a while ago now and I’m sure many of you watched the television coverage but nothing beats being there to enjoy the atmosphere and see the gardens close up!... I hope some of you managed to get there too! The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is the world’s most famous flower show and when I visited on the Wednesday I really felt part of something special, the place was absolutely buzzing!

The first garden I saw was the Laurent Perrier Garden by Luciano Giubbilei which happened to be my favourite! With two distinct areas, the garden had strong, clean lines, which I love, and strong vertical interest from Parrotia Persica trees. There are only 11 of these 35 year old trees in the world.

Another Gold award winning garden which I feel needs a mention in this short review is Diarmuid Gavin’s Irish Sky Garden. Everyone was talking about it, with its bright pink pod suspended by a crane 82ft above. Huge specimen trees, photinias and bamboos create a jungle-like feel and reduce the impact of the crane, while 25 pools of water reflecting the sky or flowing through add another element to this showstopper of a garden which finally rewarded Diarmuid with Gold at Chelsea!

The show gardens are just one element of the show. The nurserymen in the Great Pavilion show you how it should be done and there were some fantastic stalls and suppliers selling an array of garden related products to suit all tastes.... so if you’re planning a trip next year and want to kit your garden out with all the horticultural must-haves, get saving now!

If you’d to create a Chelsea show garden in your own garden contact me on 07855 940 402 or visit www.lucybravington.com

What is a diet? Many people will ask this or will say they are “going on a diet” but what does this really mean? A diet is any pattern of eating, whether its good or bad – what tends to happen once we say we’re going on a diet, all the things we think we shouldn’t be eating suddenly become very attractive.

So what is the answer to this dilemma? Stop dieting? Or learn that the word “diet” is merely a description of any food eaten – what we really need to do s to learn to change our diets. The message about 5 a day has got through to most people and that we need to eat brown bread and wholemeal cereals – so why is everyone just getting bigger and bigger?

Fast foods, high sugar foods are very accessible and tasty and as humans we crave certain taste sensations, sweet, salty and fatty – we just love it and these foods are addictive too – who can have one crisp or one chocolate?

Changing the way we eat and looking at portion control is the only answer to long term changes – it’s tough, sometimes really tough but I can guarantee you will feel so much better with a healthier eating plan – a plan that cuts through the fat, adds lean protein and fresh fruits and vegetables along with the usual bread, pasta and potatoes in limited amounts.

Many diets will claim you can eat loads of certain foods – but all foods will store as fat if eaten to excess – it is really about food density and therefore reducing calorie counts. There is a very simple equation for weight loss – but that doesn’t take into account our needs, wishes and desires for the “wrong” foods.

So what s the answer? If I knew that I would be a very wealthy woman! My key advice is to set yourself clear goals that are not necessarily weight loss related but are about health – use weight loss as a definite measure but challenge yourself with fitness goals – get a personal trainer to help you with this!

I am currently offering a 4 point start up plan which will give you the tools to set the right goals, look at your fitness levels and develop a fitness plan that suits you and your hectic lifestyle. Call me on 07740309750 for more details of this and my “priority client” package. I will guarantee results if you follow what I suggest and I will give you your money back if you don’t!

Catapulted into the foodie heaven of Grants by The Image Magazine (as reward for winning their March competition), four normally restrained individuals abandoned our bodies to the uninhibited pursuit of culinary pleasure. A recognisable cut above the flock in the gourmet quarter of Sheep Street, Grants demands only complete surrender. Emerging unchanged is not an option.

Like feted gods preparing for a feast, we perched on predatory stools in the upstairs eerie, sipping preprandials and picking out our prey. See and be seen, visit and enjoy, eat, drink and to hell with the consequences... you don’t go to Grants to balk at greed, cavil at calories or tut at wine units. (Unless of course you want to in which case I’m sure Grants’ obliging staff would indulge you.) Nevertheless these useful muttered mantras subdued conscience long enough for us to dissect the menu.

Since few words can even approach a description of the sensations we experienced, and I hesitate to take up the three or four pages required for all the superlatives, there’s only one way you’ll understand; which is to try it yourself. To whet your appetite I’ll just say we were wooed by wines like nectar, ravished by fish, meats and vegetables to tempt the most abstemious of eaters and delighted by desserts to die for. (A word of warning — don’t you always lust after everyone else’s pudding? Well at Grants they’ve put a stop to that sort of behaviour by giving you a taste of everything in miniature on a shared plate. Brilliant idea; spoilsports.

Enough? Never. But seriously, it was the best prize ever — and so is Grants. Thank you very very much for the most superb evening!

Angela Farmer and Friends.

When we moved into our new house, Dad liked everything except

the wallpaper, so one weekend he decided to re-wallpaper.

This was going well until the weekend ended and there was

still a strip to do. He said he would do it next weekend, but next

weekend came along and it was never done. Then months and

years passed until finally 10 years later when we decided to move

house he wallpapered the strip. It only took two minutes to do,

the same time it takes to brush your teeth in the morning. I can’t

understand why he didn’t just wallpaper it in the first place when it

only took two minutes!

I asked my 20 year old son to paint the passage in our house

plus all the doors. He removed every single door and took over a

month to paint them. It gave communal living a whole different

meaning and I became a lot closer to my family than I wanted to

be. I got sick of waiting and finished them off myself. Unfortunately

he didn’t mark each door as to which room it came from, so I had

great fun trying to find which door went with which room. It is now

all back together, thank goodness, but it is the last time I ask him to

do any painting around here!

EASY STRIPPING

Go to the chemist if you have any wallpaper to strip, buy some

alum. For every pint of warm water you have, add two teaspoons.

Wet the paper thoroughly and allow it to dry in. It should then lift

off the wall much more easily.

Alveston ManorMorning Indulgence

1. First job is to bring a pan of water to boil with a few drops of white wine vinegar2. Crack two eggs and separate them using only the yolks place in a bowl and whisk of your pan of water. Be careful not to over heat them and scramble them. You can always remove for a few sec onds and keep whisking. 3. Add your melted butter slowly to your pale egg yolks whisking as you do4. Once all the butter has been emulsified into the eggs leave to one side5. Reduce the rest of the vinegar and peppercorns6. Add to the hollandaise sauce and check for seasoning 7. Grill your bacon to how you like8. Whilst this is happening toast your muffin under the grill (be careful not to burn it)9. In your pan of water you now can poach of the other two eggs again to your liking

Time to assemblePlace 1 piece of muffin on the plate, then add your two pieces of bacon followed by your other piece of muffin. Then on top of that you can now place your two poached eggs on top and pour over lovely hollandaise sauce. Then just sit back and enjoy with a coffee and the paper.

• 1 x English muffin• 2 x rashes smoked bacon• 4 x free range eggs• 4oz butter (melted)

• 1floz of white wine vinegar (couple of peppercorns)• Salt and pepper
