Members of the Golf Tournament committee were asked to remain after today’s program meeting for a brief meeting.

The installation dinner is scheduled for Thursday, June 25th at Rolling Hills Country Club. Mark your calendars and plan to attend this special evening.

The 5790 District Conference is June 26-27 in Wichita Falls.

It’s time to sign up for the Rotary School Awards! This is a great way to understand Rotary’s role in the community. Bill Coppola’s assistant Theresa is at the back table with more information.

Joe Way mentioned the Arlington Police Department’s Annual Memorial Service next week, Tuesday, May 5th at 9 am at Heroes Park, 2100 W. Green Oaks Blvd.

After an uneven singing performance last week, Ron Smith led us in singing “Texas, Our Texas” again. I think we’re getting better! There were no birthdays announced.

Clete McAlister reported that the email survey he sent out yielded an interest in more classification talks. He arranged for our program today to have two classification talks. Clete introduced our first speaker, Larry Jordan.

Larry began by talking about his 25 years spent in the banking industry. He became an expert in helping cities, ISDs and others borrow money via bond sales. He was a self-described “Dave Ramsey for people with $100 million mortgages.” He worked with airports, colleges and

stadiums, including the current AT&T Stadium in Arlington. He reminded us that the Cowboys Football Team first approached Dallas about a new stadium, but Arlington made better sense. He experienced a lot of stress on the stadium project, and retired in 2011. The past 4-5 years, he has raised a grandson, taught in Africa, and drove veterans to doctor appointments.

Larry talked more specifically about his experience in Africa. He found himself in an area where “nothing worked.” His wife was bitten by an insect and was ultimately hospitalized while there. He experienced a lot of anxiety, but ultimately had an epiphany. The food, housing, schools, and medical care in Africa were awful (Larry used a more colorful descriptive word). However, it was the most powerful and meaning experience of his life.

Next up, was Rotarian Victoria Farrar-Myers from the University of Texas at Arlington. She described 5 key points in her life.

First, was when she received a doll at three years old. She named the doll “And Justice For All.” She wanted to bring that to the world. She had this doll for about four years, but this determination has always remained with her as her personal mission and goal.

Next, she mentioned graduating from high school at 16 and going immediately to college. She met a Psychology professor named Sybillyn Jennings while at Russell Sage College in Troy, NY. While she still deeply wanted to change the world, Dr. Jennings encouraged her to be an “academic.” She wasn’t sure what that

meant. She was taking pre-medicine and pre-law classes. Eventually, she decided to focus on becoming an academic and earned her PhD.

From 1997-1998, she served as an American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow, working on the legislative staff of Rep. Christopher Shays (CT). She joked about that particular time as being interesting for all interns, in light of the Lewinsky/Clinton incident.

She came to the University of Texas at Arlington to teach. When she taught her first class, students queried her, “Are you old enough to be a professor?” She has been at UTA for 17 years.

Victoria told two stories about her academic career. First was about a young man who was planning to end his life. Because of her intervention, he went to counseling instead. The second story was about a young man who served five tours in Iraq as a Special Forces Marine. He had Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and she asked him what he wanted in life. His desire was to complete college. Victoria was able to help him get a degree in history, and then later a political science degree. He ultimately became one of 20 people who received the Service Above Self Congressional Medal of Honor.

Victoria closed by challenging all Rotarians to do one simple thing for someone and change a life.

President Joyce thanked out speakers. She also reminded everyone to sign up for the School Awards, help the Golf Tournament, and volunteer this weekend with the Cardboard Boat Regatta.

We closed with the Four Way Test, and the meeting adjourned at 1:00 pm.
