Welcome to the this month’s edition of

The Hub: Corstorphine

Hello all and welcome to this the fifth edition of The Hub: Corstorphine.

I know it’s hard to believe but we’re just about into the summer already, although so far it hasn’t felt much like it!

In this latest edition of The Hub: Corstorphine we’re proud to spotlight the work of two very different groups of people who have one thing in common: Corstorphine.

Gilly Herbert is a fund raising dynamo. She’s been working with The Edinburgh Hospital Sick Kids Foundation for years… ever since her own daughter was looked after so well. She needs our support with her latest fundraiser and you can read about what she’s up to later in the magazine.

A group of students from Forrester High School have been to The Netherlands to take part in a European Space Agency inspired competition called CanSat. You can read about their plans to create a satellite to collect data from the atmosphere in a container no larger than a baked beans can. Can – Sat. See what they did there?

We also have the usual mix of advertisers, some of whom will be familiar to you and some are new to The Hub: Corstorphine. If you see something you like please do tell them where you saw their advert.

Finally, we have some exciting news about our website: www.thehub-community.com.

Over the next few weeks we are going to launching three new sections on the site: The Hub – Motoring, The Hub – Property and The Hub – Holiday Club.

We’ll keep you posted as the new sections go live but of course, do send us your thoughts, pictures, articles… anything… you think might be of interest to your fellow readers.

And, of course, please do visit our Facebook page and click ‘Like’.

Thanks a million and see you next time.

Welcome Message

The Corstorphine Market is to held in the Scout Hall, St Margaret’s Park every Sunday, kicking off on 2nd June.

And there’s a real variety of foods and crafts on offer. Locally produced organic meat,

cheese and fish, fresh fruit and vegetables, more unusual foods as well as local crafts.

In fact, we think it’s a real opportunity to do much more of what we always say we’re

Corstorphine Market

going to do... to shop locally with smaller producers and eat a bit more healthily, too.

All of this is the brainchild of local businessman Daniel Halasz. We asked Daniel what he wanted to achieve. ‘For me, it’s about the quality of the produce but it’s also the opportunity for families to be together. That’s why there’s a bouncy castle and refreshments on hand.’

It sounds like a great place to spend a couple of hours, just browsing and taking in the sights, sounds and

smells of the wonderful produce that will be on offer. We’ll certainly be supporting the market, which runs from 11am to 4pm every Sunday.

For a full list of vendors search Hearts and Hands Craft Fairs on Facebook or Twitter.

Something New: We all know that Corstorphine is a fantastic place to live and work and that’s why it’s so great when something new is launched that will help local businesses, bring trade in to the village and be truly community focussed.

Club SpotlightsCrammond Angling Club

TNot knowing much about the sport of Angling we were pleased to receive a call from Jim Madden, Treasurer of the Cramond Angling Club (CAC) which is always keen to attract new members.

Before we talked with Jim we thought we’d look up a few facts about Angling and the type of person who goes fishing.

How about this for a start? An Angler goes fishing for an average of 58 days a year according to gofishing.co.uk and spends, on average £501 - £1,000 a year. And, from the same survey 69% of Anglers didn’t rate catching a big fish as important motivation.

CAC aims to promote fishing on the River Almond at an affordable price and promote the health and well being of the river at the same time.

If you’d like more information about CAC visit www.fishalmond.co.uk

Book Review: A True and Just Cause

Dougie Teviotdale has been running his own business, Doogs Gardening Services, since being pensioned out of the Lothian and Borders Police Service (as it was then) a few years ago.

But Dougie has a secret…He’s a published author, writing fiction but drawing on his experience in the army and the police.

To be honest it’s not that much of a secret and he wants to tell a lot more people about it!His first novel, A True and Just Cause, is a gritty thriller based in Edinburgh’s underworld of crime and violence and it’s clear from the first pages that Dougie knows what he’s talking about.

Somehow, the author manages to weave his own experiences (the hero is an ex-soldier who joins the Lothian and Borders Police service after leaving the army) whilst still writing a story that is exciting, fast-paced and full of twists and turns.

I bought the book, which is available on Kindle, so I could write this review. The problem is I got really tired reading it… it’s such a page turner that I stayed up way too late just to find out what happens next.

The story is certainly gritty (in all honesty I couldn’t let my mother read it) and the plot won’t be for everyone, especially if violence and sex isn’t your thing. But for a rip roaring story that spanks along at an incredible pace you could do a lot worse than to get hold of a copy of A true and Just Cause.

Find your way to Kindle via Dougie’s website www.dougieteviotdale.com

Local Hero: Gilly Herbert

If ever you needed a definition for ‘Local Hero’ go no further than Corstorphine resident Gilly Herbert.

Gilly has raised more than £10,000 for the Sick Kids Friends Foundation since her daughter, Sophia, needed some help from the hospital.

Gilly was so grateful for the care Sophia received that she embarked on a campaign to raise funds to replace the hospital’s ‘well loved’ toys.

Now after years of cajoling, persuading and generally working hard you’d think it would be time for Gilly to hang up her fund raising boots. But not a bit of it… she’s still going strong and has more events planned; the next one being a Baby Blossom Fair on Saturday 25th May, 2pm – 5pm at St Ninian’s Church, St John’s Road, Corstorphine.

We thought we should speak with Gilly to find out why she’s so motivated.

Page 17: The hub corstorphine edition 5

Local Hero: Gilly Herbert ‘Well, I really wanted to say ‘thanks’ because Sophia was looked after so well.’

Like all Local Heroes, Gilly seems a little surprised that anyone would want to talk about her. In fact she actively tries to divert attention away from herself: ‘I need to mention my friend and fabulous baker, Paula Smith, who is organising the Baby Blossom Fair with me.’

That all changes when she talks about the Sick Kids Friends Foundation and their work. Then she gets very enthusiastic!

‘It all started a few years ago with a Friends and Family Cookbook which raised £5,347.03.’

Okay, so that’s where it started, what else have you done to raise money?

Gilly smiles and begins to recite what seems to be quite a long list: ‘There’s the cookbook of course, and we organise Kids Get Together Discos, raffles, silent auctions and our Baby Blossom Fairs.’

You’ve mentioned that before – tell us more about it.

‘Yes, we held our first Baby Blossom Fair last

September and raised £628. People come along to sell new and nearly new baby and children’s things.’

So, how do you raise money?

‘People who want to take a stall pay us for that stall and then keep all the money they make from selling their items. We keep the stall fees and the £1 entry fee.’

Is there anything else going on?

Gilly laughs at our question. ‘Oh, yes, lots. There’s a fabulous home baking café, face painting and Phoenix Cards. It will be a great afternoon if anyone would like to come along.’

Gilly’s Baby Blossom Fair is being held on Saturday 25th may from 2pm to 5pm at St Ninian’s Chuch, St John’s Road, Corstorphine. The entry fee is just £1 and every penny helps towards the Sick Kids Friends Foundation.

It’s not exactly a ‘tax tip’ but we liked this one so much we thought we’d share it with you.

The Energy Saving Trust has a scheme available to certain home owners across the country. It’s called the Green Homes Cashback Scheme and is a £1,200 grant to spend on whatever you want as long as it’s on the list.

And it’s a long list with things as wide ranging as solid wall external insulation to LED lighting.

You can find more information by going to www.energysavingtrust.org.uk and search for Green Homes Cashback scheme or by getting in touch with our friends at www.homeinsulations.org.uk.

Asthma is often overlooked as a serious illness. However In Scotland 368,000 people are currently receiving treatment for asthma and in the UK a child is admitted to hospital every 17 minutes with asthma. 90% of asthma deaths are avoidable if treatment is received in time.

Look out for some or all of the following symptoms to identify an asthma attack: breathless, coughing, wheezing and tightness of chest.

To alleviate the symptoms help the sufferer take their medication - they are to take one to two puffs of their reliever inhaler (usually blue) immediately.

Get them to sit down and take slow, steady breaths. If they don’t start to feel better take another two puffs of inhaler (one puff at a time) every two minutes. They can take up to ten puffs. If still no better call 999: remember breathing difficulty is an emergency call!

Stand in Palma de Mallorca’s old quarter and you’d be forgiven for thinking you we’re in Prague or maybe Seville rather than on one of the Balearics most popular tourist destinations.

The island of Majorca has long been a real favourite of the British holiday maker and over the years has developed a... shall we say... mixed reputation.

Recent improvements to the tourist facilities and good value flights from Edinburgh on easyJet make Majorca worth a second look for a main holiday or even a weekend break

We walked from the old quarter with the imposing cathedral to our left and strolled along the quay of the famous yacht basin. The playthings of the rich and famous jostled for position along the many jetties and quays.

We stopped at one of the harbour side cafes for a cappuccino and watched people for an hour or so before continuing our walk. We passed the ferry port and cruise centre before leaving Palma de Mallorca behind.

The next resort along is a throw back to the old Majorca. Cala Major is

cramped and not particularly pleasant. However we soon picked up the newly created pedestrian walkway that runs about 15 miles out to Santa Ponsa on the south westerly tip of the island.

The path is broad, safe and well lit... ideal for a gentle walk of a couple of miles or a longer distance hike.

We passed the resort of Illetas before finally stopping for lunch in the very swish Portals Nous, Majorca’s equivalent of Marbella.

Pasta and a bottle of wine went down very well (and cost a few Euros, too) before the walk back through the contrasting faces of Majorca to our boutique hotel in the capital city.

At the time of writing return easyJet flights to Palma cost about £350 for 2 people if booked a couple of weeks in advance. The price didn’t include any baggage.

Please get in touch and tell us about your holiday whether it is good or bad.

Innovation Spotlight: Cansat

Four young men known as Team Cyclos, from Craigmont High School are off to the Netherlands on 10th April to take part in a Pan-European science based competition.

At this point the satellite will be deployed from the rocket and will have to undertake 2 missions; firstly to measure air temperature and pressure and then to gauge wind speed throughout the flight.

The ESA wants to foster and support a broad range of science based activities. This competition simulates the launch of a real satellite on a real mission to collect data… and

everything needed for the mission has to be fitted into a container the size of a Coke can.

Ian Bowyer, the Project Manager, gave us more details. ‘Everything has to be fitted into the can. This includes all the systems and electronics for collecting data which have to withstand acceleration forces of up to 20g, as well as a system for bringing the can (sorry, satellite) safely back to Earth.’

Four young men known as Team Cyclos, from Craigmont High School are off to the Netherlands on 10th April to take part in a Pan-European science based competition.

Helmi Fraser, Ian Bowyer, Murray Headrick and Ross Wilson, all 17, are taking part in the European CanSat competition organised by the European Space Agency (ESA). Their mission (which they have already accepted) is to build a satellite the size of a Coke can which will be launched up to about 1,000 metres.

Page 27: The hub corstorphine edition 5

www.thehub-community.com For advertising and features - 0131 603 5290 / [email protected]

It’s a tall order and putting together the systems has been a challenge. Ross Wilson explained what he was hoping to get out of taking part in the competition.

‘I decided to take part in the competition partly due to the fact that I’m a bit of a science and maths geek… but mainly because I think shooting a can into the sky is pretty cool.’

Despite it being so ‘cool’, there’s an element of pressure: last year’s winner was Team Alpha from Bearsden Academy in Glasgow!

The CanSat competition is open to schools across Europe although there were only 20 launch slots available.

As a result Team Cyclos has already had to submit a proposal, take part in a rigorous selection and raise the funds needed to get to the Netherlands. We asked Helmi Fraser what the toughest thing has been so far.

‘Definitely the fund raising… get enough money through things like raffles and from local businesses has been a challenge. But we roped

in my Dad and he’s been helping us on that front.’

Helmi Fraser’s dad has indeed been out knocking on doors of local businesses and has been overwhelmed by the response.

‘The generosity of local business owners has amazed me. I haven’t done anything like this before

‘The generosity of local business owners has amazed me. I haven’t done anything like this before so I didn’t quite know what to expect, but my faith in human generosity has been restored.’

so I didn’t quite know what to expect, but my faith in human generosity has been restored.’

The lads are all in their final year at Craigmont High School and will be off to various universities next year to study Electrical Engineering (Ian), Robotics (Helmi), Mechanical Engineering (Murray) and Chemical Engineering (Ross).

By now you will have realised that the one thing we don’t do here at The Hub is rest on our laurels.

We’re constantly looking for new stuff to bring you. Of course, we’ll only bring you things that you might find interesting, useful or both.

Welcome to The Hub: Motoring.

We’ve teamed up with Pike and Bambridge (you’ll find their advert in the magazine) to bring you a new motoring section on our website, www.thehub-community.com.

The Hub:Motoring is a one stop shop for everything

Hub Motoring

you need when considering your next car. Whether you are considering a super mini such as the Skoda Citigo or a long distance cruiser such as the Audi A4 you’ll find reviews, specs and recommendations.

You’ll also have access to the fantastic Pike and Bambridge service which really is a new and fresh approach to buying a new car.

As you’d expect from The Hub the reviews are very readable and provide information that’s actually useful to you whilst you are making up your mind. Things like: what will the

neighbours say? And what’s it actually like to sit in the cabin?

Of course our library of car reviews is growing all the time but if you’d like some information about any car you can think of, email us and we’ll make sure you get all the advice and information you need to help you with your choice.

In future editions of The Hub: Corstorphine we’ll bring you a selection of reviews... if there’s a car you would like us to review let us know and we’ll do our best to help out.

In the meantime, do visit our website and tell us what you think.

By now you will have realised that the one thing we don’t do here at The Hub is rest on our laurels.
