THE HISTORY OF
NEWENT ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY
1940-2017
To Music
Thou lovely art, in many a dreary hour
when life in all its dreaded toils surrounds me,
Hast thou my heart enkindled to new love, And set me forth into a fairer world.
Often a sigh from out thine harp ascending,
A sweet, a sacred chord sent to me flowing a better life, a golden heaven been opened,
Thou lovely art, for this I thank thee now.
An extract from ‘An die Music’, set to music by Franz Schubert,
from a poem by Franz von Schober
Foreword
In recognition of the 70th anniversary of the Newent Orchestra, I rather wanted
to gather together the history of the Society and to prepare a publication to celebrate the occasion.
The task has been a somewhat formidable one especially owing to the fact that the minute book for the first 40 years of the Society's existence has gone missing.
However, being a collector myself, much of the history has come to light and is
now recorded in this publication, which I hope you will enjoy reading.
My interest in music started a few years after the formation of the orchestra when
I frequently practised my own vocal harmonies for which I was duly rewarded,
either with a smack – which introduced me to a molto crescendo, or there was the dummy or sordini – that ultimately resulted in a silent pause.
However, with these early beginnings my interest in music grew and I joined both the Newent Choral Society and the Orchestral Society in 1958. I have held
many positions within the orchestra and at present I am deeply honoured to have
been its conductor for the past 17 years.
Many congratulations to the members of the Newent Orchestral Society for
continuing to maintain and encourage the success of the Orchestra. Long may
there be an Orchestra in Newent!

Note on the 2017 edition
In updating the History produced by George Taylor in 2010, I have tried to retain all of his material and virtually all of his original structure, wording and style. New material is
added throughout the book. I am indebted to George for providing details of concerts
from 2010 up to the present. This new edition is now in electronic form: all content is searchable by computer and can be updated readily in the future. There are bound to be
some errors or omissions, and I apologise for these in advance. I can correct any that are
brought to my attention.

HISTORICAL NOTES
THE ORCHESTRA's BEGINNING The Newent Orchestral Society started its life in l940 at a time when valuable recreation during the war was a necessary
thing. It must have been around the time of Dunkirk that Mr. Clem Thurstone, who ran a grocery business in the main
street of Newent, invited a few friends to meet regularly in a room over his shop. Mr. Thurston was a keen violinist and among those who joined with him was the Rector of that time, the Rev. C.J.K. Burnell and his family who were virtually a
small orchestra in themselves.
A number of other musicians decided to join the group and they were, Lady Raikes, Miss Joan Jeynes, Mr Raynor
Brookes, Mrs Dora Wilkinson and Miss Carline Crampton, to mention but a few. Naturally, with the numbers increasing,
there were far too many for Clem Thurston's room and so they moved to the drawing room of the Rectory, which is where
it all really began and Carline Crampton became the Society's first conductor, a post she held for 48 years.
The first Concert given by the Orchestra was a Charity Concert at the George Hotel in Newent on Friday, 21st March
1941. Following this there was a concert every year throughout the 1940s which was performed in the Newent Grammar School and featured many instrumental or vocal soloists that were either members of the orchestra or from local areas.
Rev. BURNELL
During the 1940s, music in Newent was rapidly growing, due in part to the work of Rev. Burnell, who decided to perform
Handel's Messiah in St. Mary's Church, involving a chorus of local choirs and orchestra of about 80 performers under his
own directorship. Many of the orchestral players were also members of the newly formed Orchestral Society. So successful was this concert that an annual performance of a major oratorio continued until his death in 1949.
Miss CARLINE CRAMPTON
Carline Crampton was born in Edinburgh, and, when her father died she moved to Manchester where she studied violin at
the Royal Manchester College of Music under Dr. Adolf Brodsky, who was a famous international soloist and friend of
Brahms, Grieg, Saint-Saens, Busoni and Tschaikovsky. On completion of her studies she moved to Herefordshire and was soon involved in engagements as leading viola in choral and orchestral concerts in Bristol, Gloucester, Hereford,
Swindon, etc. and, later, with the Cheltenham String Orchestra. She was appointed Conductor of Ross Orchestral Society
in 1935, then to both Coleford in the Forest of Dean, and Newent Orchestras in 1940. Her connections with these other orchestras have involved the Newent Orchestra in joining with them for a number of concerts. Her long service with
Newent ended in 1988 due to her failing eye sight, but she still supported the orchestra and attended concerts until her
death in 1994.
PERFORMANCE OF WORKS
The Newent Orchestral Society during its 70 years of existence has performed hundreds of the great works by many composers. Handel's "Occasional Overture" has been by far the most popular with twelve performances. This is followed
by Handel's "March from Scipio" and the "Symphony in Eb" by Abel, each having been performed nine times. Of all the
symphonies, it is Haydn’s that have been played most as he did write 104 and Haydn was Carline Crampton's most favourite composer.
There is also a long list of concertos by many composers that have been performed in Newent by excellent local instrumentalists, as well as some eminent guests from various music colleges. The instruments that have been featured the
most for concertos are the violin and the piano. It is difficult to fully understand how the piano was so popular because,
during the early days of the orchestra when performances were in the Newent Memorial Hall, there was no tuned piano
available, but a member of the orchestra, Lady Raikes did lend her piano for the concerts which was excellent, especially when someone as talented and professional as Iris Dyer was playing a concerto.

MISSING RECORDS
When the orchestra's long serving Secretary, Miss Joan Jeynes died in December 1983, it was most unfortunate that the
Society's records had disappeared and could not be found, but a lot of information has come to light through many retired
members of the orchestra. This large gap in the history of the Society is to be regretted and so this is the reason for
bringing together as much as possible before it is too late so that those who follow can understand and appreciate Newent's Orchestra and its history.
OFFICERS AND MEMBERS
Throughout its 70 years the Society has been very fortunate in its Officers and Members, and whilst all have contributed
greatly to the success achieved, there are a few that deserve special mention because of their long service. Miss Joan Jeynes, Secretary for 43 years; Mr Raynor Brookes, Treasurer for 50 years, and a member for 54 years; Miss Carline
Crampton, Conductor for 48 years; Mr Stanley Jenkinson, a member for 48 years; Rev. Ainsworth, Chairman for 25 years
and a member for 35 years; Miss Winsome Whittingham, a member for 32 years; Mr George Taylor, a member for 59
years (as of 2017).
The committee have now decided to present any member with 25 years’ service with a gift in recognition of their loyalty
to the Society. The three members who qualified for this award in 2008 were Mrs Elizabeth Desmond and Mrs Elizabeth Wreford for 25 years’ service and Mr George Taylor for 50 years’ service.
At the 1988 Annual General Meeting it was proposed that any member of the Society who retires after a long service would become a Life Member. Miss Carline Crampton and Mr. Stanley Jenkins were the first members to have been
honoured with this title following their respective retirements.
COMBINED ORCHESTRAL CONCERTS
In May 1965 the Newent Orchestra celebrated its 25th year, as did the Coleford Orchestra, and, with Carline Crampton as
Conductor of both Orchestras, they joined together to present a "Double Silver Jubilee" concert in both Coleford and Newent. The Newent concert was given in the Memorial Hall with 48 musicians in the orchestra and, indeed, in the
confines of the hall, they were almost comparable in size with their audience. So successful was this event that both
orchestras continued to join together during 1966 and 1967, but then decided to do their own concerts, thus preserving
their own independence.
Then in June 1973 and 1974 the Newent and Ross Orchestras joined forces for concerts at the Ross Grammar School and
in October 1975 they got together again to celebrate Carline Crampton's 40th year as Conductor of the Ross Orchestra. There was one more combined concert with Ross that took place in October 1977, but the number of string players had
very much decreased compared with previous years, so there were no further combined concerts.
NEWENT's MUSIC
The music performed by the orchestra includes works by many famous composers, but there are seven pieces that have
been composed specially for, and dedicated to, the Newent Orchestra.
Phyllis Burrows composed a Sonata for piano and violin and it was first performed in the Newent Memorial Hall on 21st
May 1960. The two soloists were Isoline Kay, violin and the composer, Phyllis Burrows on the piano.
The second piece, 'A Song without words', was composed by George Taylor and performed in St Mary' s Church on 21st
May 1994 as a tribute to the memory of Carline Crampton who had died earlier that year.
The third piece was written by the current leader of the Orchestra, Bill Anderton with the title 'The Well-tempered
Orchestra' and again dedicated to the orchestra that he much enjoys. This was first performed in the Memorial Hall on
17th May 2008.
3
The fourth piece was by Robert Peate who attended concerts by the orchestra and felt that he wanted to compose
something particularly for the Newent Orchestra The work is called Pastorale No. 1 'Amongst the Datfodils' and was performed in the Memorial Hall on 13th December 2008.
The fifth piece entitled 'Telstar Revisited', again by Bill Anderton, was written as a special tribute to local musician Joe
Meek and was first performed at the Orchestra's 70th anniversary concert in the Memorial Hall on 15th May 2010.
The sixth composition, ‘A Wedding March’, composed by George Taylor and performed in the Memorial Hall on 14th
May 2011, was to mark the wedding of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine Middleton.
The seventh composition, Bill Anderton’s ‘A Newent Symphony’, his most ambitious work to date, painted a picture in
five scenes of the town of Newent and its surroundings. The symphony had its first performance at a special concert in the Community School, Newent, at an event, sponsored by the Notgrove Trust, that included an art competition. The
symphony’s five movements are entitled Dawn Over the Lake, Daffodils, Market Square, The Onion Fayre, and May Hill.
REHEARSAL VENUES
Following the early beginnings of the Orchestra in 1940, the membership was increasing which meant that a suitably sized room had to be found for its rehearsals and so, with the kind offer of the headmaster, it finally settled in at the Grammar
School Hall where it remained until 1982. It was then that the orchestra had to move out to allow major alterations to be
done to the old school to convert it into a Youth Centre.
However, it was fortunate that in September 1982, Mr and Mrs Raynor Brooks offered their house for rehearsals, but it
involved them in moving their piano and furniture each week to accommodate the orchestra. Their warmth and hospitality
were very much appreciated and enabled the orchestra to 'keep going' until a new venue could be found.
In September 1983 a new venue had been found, which was the Church Hall at Oxenhall. Although the hall was perfect
for rehearsals, the parking facilities were limited to roadside parking that did present problems. The local residents made formal complaints and, in May 1991, this resulted in a member of the orchestra receiving a parking fine. In consequence it
was decided to find yet another venue for rehearsals with good parking facilities. After much searching it was finally
decided to move to The Village Hall at Upleadon. Rehearsals began there in September 1991 and continued there until
2011.
By 2011, the Orchestra had become so successful in recruiting new members that it had become too large to use the
Upleadon Hall comfortably for rehearsals. When the Newent Initiative Trust offered for hire its main hall at the Newent Community Centre, the advantage of its greater space was obvious, and the Society moved to this venue. This brought the
orchestra back full circle, because the Centre was actually the old Grammar School building. The orchestra remains there
to the present day, although the Centre ownership has changed to Glebe Chapel, and remodelling of the facilities is
planned.
CELEBRATIONS & ANNIVERSARIES Throughout the 70 years of its existence the orchestra has made a point of celebrating special occasions such as its own
Silver, Ruby, Golden and Diamond birthdays. In addition, the orchestra also joined with the Coleford and the Ross
Orchestras for their special birthday celebrations.
Queen's Coronation During the week of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, there were many festivities taking place
in Newent in celebration of the occasion and on Friday, 5th June 1953, in the marquee on the Recreation Ground, the
Newent and District Music Club, together with the Newent Orchestral Society, continued with the celebrations. They put on a joint "Music for All" concert with their conductors Mr Harold Davis and Miss Carline Crampton. The programme
consisted of selections from the concert version of "Merrie England" by Edward German, sung by the choir. The
orchestral selections were from "The Arcadians", "Pomp and Circumstance" by Elgar, Gilbert and Sullivan operas, and other well-known musical items.

Opening of Newent Memorial Hall In the following year, on the 3rd April 1954, there was another occasion for
celebration in that the newly built Memorial Hall was to be officially opened by Dr W. M. Lucas Johnstone, the president of the Newent Memorial Hall Committee. The idea of a memorial hall was conceived in September 1943 to commemorate
the lives of the Newent Men who fought and who died during the war. Prayers were said by the Rector of Newent, the
Rev. Charles Hodgins, and two verses of Jerusalem were sung by the audience, accompanied by the Newent Orchestral
Society, conducted by Miss Carline Crampton.
There was further entertainment by the orchestra following the official opening. The first function to be held in the new
hall took place during the evening of the grand opening and that was a Dance with about 250 people attending.
Royal British Legion Memorial Event “A Time to Remember WW1” The orchestra was called upon by the Newent
Branch of the Royal British Legion and Newent Town Council to provide the music for a solemn event on 28 June 2014 to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War. The occasion also included the Newent Brass Group,
the Newent Scottish Singers, Army Cadets, Air Cadets and Scouts and an audio visual display by Mr Robin Lister,
graphically portraying the sacrifices made by so many.
25 Years "Double Silver Jubilee for West Gloucestershire Orchestras" was the headline in the May 1965 issues of
the local papers. This was the occasion when both the Newent and the Coleford Orchestras with their conductor, Miss
Carline Crampton, joined together to give a concert in each town to celebrate their 25th anniversary. The Newent Concert was presented in the Newent Memorial Hall on the 8th May with 48 musicians in the orchestra and, indeed, in the
confines of the hall they were almost comparable in size with their audience. This was immaterial since it was a special
occasion for the orchestras to celebrate and enjoy their musical achievements with each other.
40 Years To celebrate the Orchestra and also Miss Carline Crampton's Ruby anniversary, a concert was given on
the 10th May 1980 in the Newent Memorial Hall before a most enthusiastic audience. 38 players came together to support
this special milestone in the life of the Newent Orchestra.
50 Years To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the orchestra, a special concert was given in St. Mary's Church to a
very large audience of both friends and supporters. The concert was conducted by the new conductor, Adrian Courtenay and the soloists were Gregory Morgan on trumpet and Rachel Howgego with her 'cello. It was wonderful that the
founding conductor of the orchestra, Miss Carline Crampton, was also in the audience and was invited to conduct Elgar's
"Pomp and Circumstance March No. 5 with its expansive tune "Land of Hope and Glory*' so beloved by the Promenade
audience in the Royal Albert Hall.
After 50 years of existence the orchestra, together with music lovers everywhere, were feeling the concern that public
funds for the arts had been withdrawn which meant the responsibility to ensure that music remained alive was in the hands of the various music groups and their supporters. It was reported that the 50th anniversary concert gave good reason for
optimism for the future of the Newent Orchestral Society and the Society was wished 'good luck' for the next half century!
60 Years After a further 10 years, the Orchestra was still going strong, with friends and supporters making
such comments as "How fortunate the Newent area is in having such a lively, enthusiastic body of amateur
musicians, and a large number of younger players". A concert to celebrate the 60 years of music making was given in St.
Mary's Church and was a noteworthy success, marking yet another high point in the Society's continuing progress.
The highlight of the programme was a performance of Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, in which the
soloist was Nicolas Ramirez-Celis, a Colombian Student in his 1st year of study for an M.A. in performing Arts at the Welsh College of Music and Drama. Also included in the programme was a performance of Haydn's Symphony No. 104,
"The London", which was chosen as a tribute to the founder conductor, Miss Carline Crampton, who directed the
orchestra for 48 years, and whose love of the works of Haydn influenced the present conductor, Mr. George Taylor, to make the choice for this special event.
Queen's Jubilee On Saturday, 18th May 2002 the Orchestra presented a "Jubilee Celebration Concert" in St
Mary's Church to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne. The programme included
5
music written for many Royal occasions during the last 300 years. Also included were pieces by English composers who
have had some connection with Royalty during their life. The guest soloist for the evening was the local soprano, Mary Brigg, accompanied by Janet Roach, who performed a wonderful selection of songs, including extracts from Edward
German's "Merrie England". The audience were invited to participate in the singing of the ever popular "Rule Britannia"
led by Mary Brigg, followed by the National Anthem which brought the wonderful celebration concert to an end.
70 Years As part of the Orchestra's 70
th celebration in 2010, through the initiative and determination of its leader,
Bill Anderton, the Society launched the Newent Music Heritage Project. The project promoted Newent as a centre of
musical heritage, remembering, in particular, the lives of local musicians Rutland Boughton and Joe Meek.
A Music Heritage Exhibition was held in the Town's Market House, followed by a Celebration Concert in the Memorial
HalL The programme included works that were first performed at the Orchestra's initial Concerts in 1941 at both the George Hotel and the Grammar School Included also was a group of orchestral folk-songs and a short animated film with
music from "The Immortal Hour" by Rutland Boughton from Kilcot, who died 50 years ago. His wife was a member of
the Orchestra in the early beginnings. Joe Meek, who was born in Newent in 1929, will be well remembered through his
composition of "Telstar" that was top of the pops in the music charts of the early 1960's. Joe was inspired to write this piece following the launching of the first communications satellite in 1962 in the USA.
As a tribute, the orchestra performed a new piece by Bill Anderton, who used the idea that made "Telstar" an instant hit and developed it into another form of music, which he called "Telstar Revisited". This wonderful Celebration Concert
ended on a very high note with the audience singing appropriate words to the tune of "Congratulations".
ORCHESTRA's CONSTITUTION Before 1990, there was no Constitution to provide written guidance to the
Society’s committee and the members on how the orchestra should be managed. It was therefore proposed at the 1988
Annual General Meeting that one should be set up to state the aims of the orchestra, when meetings should be held, the
membership of the committee and their powers and duties. This was all carefully prepared and approved at the 1990 AGM.
The Constitution made reference to the Society electing a President, and so at the 1991 AGM, many names were put forward for the post, but it was unanimously agreed that the Mayor of Newent, whoever was in the post, should be invited
to fill this important position. The Newent Council agreed with the Society's invitation and in June 1992, Cllr Bill Offord
became the Orchestra’s first President. There were small amendments made and the Constitution was revised and
approved in 1995.
In 2013, following the Society’s becoming a member of Making Music (the National Federation of Music Societies), a
replacement Constitution was adopted by the Society, in order that the Society could be regarded as a charity and so be allowed to use the Gift Aid scheme. This has allowed income from membership fees to be augmented considerably. The
Constitution was later replaced by another one, adopted in 2017, based on the most recent model constitution from
Making Music, that has been designed to be more flexible and to facilitate registration in the future with the Charity Commission if this becomes necessary.
NUMBER OF CONCERTS PER YEAR It can be seen from the list of concerts that the orchestra only performed
once a year in earlier years. This was due to the members playing with other groups in addition and, similarly, members of other groups playing with Newent. This meant that each player performed in concerts many times a year. However, when
the Ross and the Coleford orchestras closed, this meant that there was only one local orchestra, and so the suggestion in
1988 that the Newent Orchestra performs two concerts a year was welcomed. This later developed into three a year, i.e. one in May and two at Christmas. Later, the Society returned to giving two concerts, with one at Christmas and one in
May or June. More recently, some additional concerts have brought the number to three, with, most recently, one in May,
one in March, and one in June.
BRASS GROUP In January 2014, a Brass Group was established by Bill Anderton to provide a resource of
brass players so that they would be available when they were needed for performance of certain works. The group initially
met and performed mostly separately from the orchestra and were not members of the Society, although the group was
6
effectively affiliated to the Society. A few years later, in 2017, the group were assimilated as full members and Bill
Anderton became their conductor on a formal basis.
NOMAG The Newent Orchestra Music Appreciation Group, an affiliated group, was also set up in 2014 to
provide a regular forum for discussion of music. Led by Bill Anderton and Ginny James, the group continues to meet
several times a year and has a membership that attends regularly.
NEWENT ARTS FESTIVAL In the 1990s, a suggestion was made that the orchestra should make contact with the
Newent Arts Festival organisation with a view to giving a concert as part of the Festival. It so happened that the Festival was held on the same weekend that the orchestra normally had its concert which made the suggestion all the more
interesting. Because the orchestra wanted to maintain its own independence, it did not wish to join the Arts Festival, but
expressed a desire to perform in association with it. This was all agreed and over a 4 year period these concerts were given in St Mary’s Church in May 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996. It was a wonderful experience!
NEWENT ONION FAYRE The ancient Newent Onion Fayre that was missing from the Town for a long time
was resurrected in the 1990's and the orchestra decided that they would like to book a stall at the Fayre with a view to promoting themselves, since it had been heard that there were many people who had not heard of the Orchestra.
September 2002 was the Society’s first stall at the Fayre which showed the public a display of historic facts and
photographs together with recent programmes of concerts to highlight the orchestra's involvement in keeping music alive in Newent.
Members had a rota of duty on the stall during the day and were able to talk with people passing by, thus enhancing their interest in the orchestra. Names were also taken of people who would like to join as instrumentalists, and, although this
did not come to much, it certainly encouraged larger audiences at concerts. In more recent years at the Fayre, an ensemble
of string players and woodwind and brass groups, as well as Bill Anderton with his electric violin, have played during the
day for the enjoyment of the public.
"AWARDS FOR ALL” In 2005 the Orchestra were delighted to receive funding from "Awards For All",
granted in recognition of the value of the orchestra to the local community and to assist it to fulfil its aims and develop and grow in the years to come. The orchestra's initiative was evolved to encourage music appreciation and music making
among the older members of the community, often neglected in terms of classical music opportunities. The Society
planned to organise music appreciation evenings, workshops for potential players and regular open rehearsals. The main
aim was to encourage adults who may have played in their youth but given up, yet would like to explore the idea of playing again, perhaps joining the orchestra.
NEWENT ORCHESTRA GRANT FUND In 2015 the Orchestra set up a music grant-awarding project from assigned Orchestra funds and donations to the orchestra offered specifically for grant-making. The Orchestra sees this as
a way to reach out to local musicians currently making, or wishing to make, live music, and encourage their development.
The grants (up to £200) are open to persons of all ages and all musical achievement levels as long as they reside, work or are educated within our catchment area, which includes the Three Choirs counties of Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and
Herefordshire. Awards are made by the Committee to support a wide range of relevant activities, for example instrument
purchase, music composition, attendance at courses or taking music lessons.

THEN AND NOW Looking back to the beginning, when the Society started during the war years, King George Vl
was on the throne and the ration book was a most valuable asset to families. Much has happened since then and we now live in a time of great change and of progress. The Newent Orchestral Society can be justifiably proud of its long record of
service to the arts and to music in particular during this period. Whilst the enthusiasm and dedication of the members play
a vital part, there is an ever present need for support from the people of Newent and the surrounding district to ensure the
continuing success of the Society. This is truly happening, for which the Society are most grateful!

Lighter Moments
During the 1960s and early 1970s when the orchestra
was rehearsing at the Grammar School, it was
unfortunate that, on the occasional rehearsal day, only a
few members were able to attend due to their commitments with other orchestras that they belonged
to. As a result the orchestra sounded rather empty,
especially when there were no cello or double bass players. However, because the trumpet part was not as
important, George Taylor would play the bass part on
the piano or if the rehearsal was in a room without a piano he would sing the bass part. Although it filled the
gap he was pleased that the instruments turned up for the
bulk of the rehearsals and especially for the concerts.
It was during 1983 that there were a number of clarinet
players who were interested in joining the orchestra
alongside Alan Brown and his daughter Philipa, who had been members for a few years. This being so, both Alan
and Philipa decided to purchase a bassoon each and learn
to play it. From then on, they would play either the clarinet or the bassoon, according to what was necessary
at the concerts.
At the annual general meeting in 1991 there was much discussion on what pieces should be included in the next
Spring Concert. One suggestion was to perform the
overture, Fingel's Cave, but immediately one member spoke out and said "if that piece was chosen then I will
resign from the orchestra; there are plenty of other
overtures in the orchestra's library". Needless to say, that
piece was not included in the future programmes and the person who disliked it remained with the orchestra until
her retirement in 2001, having been a member for 33
years.
During a Christmas Concert, the conductor Miss Carline
Crampton was getting so excited in conducting a piece of music, such that her baton got caught in the
decoration just above where she was standing. So strong
was the decoration that her baton was snatched out of
her hand and it flew towards the brass section of the orchestra; George Taylor caught it and passed it back to
the conductor who managed to keep the orchestra
playing despite all the laughter and fun that everyone got out of that funny moment.
At another Christmas Concert, the guest choir was to be accompanied by the orchestra for one of their pieces. It
started as an unaccompanied piece with the orchestra
joining in half way through and so the conductor,
George Taylor, handed a tuning fork to one of the choir members to tune up before starting. When the orchestra
eventually came in there was utter chaos – all was out of
tune and naturally everyone thought that the choir had
dropped pitch, but in fact the conductor had given the choir the wrong tuning fork. However, the audience
enjoyed the mishap and so the piece was started once
again with the correct tuning fork.
The concert in May 1997 was to include the Flute and
Harp Concerto by Mozart and the secretary had written to the Royal College of Music to engage the soloists.
The reply came back saying that there was a Harp
Workshop taking place at a farm on the Forest of Dean
and Welsh border, if we would like to attend and pick a soloist of our choice. George and June Taylor attended
the workshop, where there were 12 harpists all moving
their instruments around and up and down stairs on specially designed trolleys. It really looked like a fair
ground! However, all 12 harpists were adjudicated and
the choice of 17 year old Sally Pryce was made and it was for her to choose a flautist to play with her.
For the concert there were three cars that brought the
two players, their instruments and their families, including grandparents, from London. During the
rehearsal it was observed that, when the harpist was
sitting down to play, she could not be seen behind the front pews in the Church, and so a last minute
construction of a platform had to be carried out, but
without a sound box under the harp. The performance
was truly a remarkable success!
The May concert in 2007 included Haydn’s “Surprise”
symphony, so called because the composer introduced a sudden, unexpected, loud chord during the second
movement to ensure that the audience was paying
attention. What the conductor and almost all members of the Newent Orchestra did not know was that, for this
performance in the Memorial Hall, a real shock was
being plotted as a bit of fun. During the performance, at
just the moment of Haydn’s loud chord, there was an enormous bang from the midst of the flute section as a
party cannon exploded, emitting a fountain of confetti,
perfectly in time. It was incidentally apparent that the perpetrator had not acted alone .... The performance was
halted, and the movement started again after everyone
had appreciated the joke (and recovered from the blast).

How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank! I
here we will sit and let the sounds of music
creep in our ears: soft stillness and the night become the touches of sweet harmony. - Shakespeare

Conductor wanted was the headline in the Citizen in September 1993, following the resignation of the previous
conductor, Adrian Courtenay. The orchestra had started its new season of rehearsals and were being directed by the Chairman, George Taylor, who on a number of occasions had taken over the baton from Miss Carline Crampton when she
was otherwise committed or during the few illnesses that she had.
The Society was commencing its 53rd year and was determined to keep going and so the search for a new conductor as well as more instrumentalists continued for some time. However, no one came forward and so George Taylor decided to
accept the post and therefore resigned as the Society's Chairman.
As a result of all this, a member of the orchestra produced the following poem with apologies to Longfellow's "Hiawatha".
Listen how the Newent Players
Came from age to adulthood
How they came and swept the cobwebs
Cleared the dust, and changed the mood. Gone the blind, and hard-of-hearing.
At their music closely peering –
Now they play from a common book Not some playing Bach and some playing Gluck.
And they often have a tutti
Which turns out to sound quite frutti.
The kindly one stepped in to save us
As rudderless we sailed the sea.
With his hands aloft – extended – Very slow in phrase and bowing
Conjured up fantastic smoothness.
Sometime sped with frenzied gestures
Swept in eddies round about him – Then he called the Newent Players
There among the guests assembled –
With the sound of flutes and drums With the sound of wind and strings
Play to us Oh Newent Players
Play in accents sweet and tender Play in tones of deep emotion
Play with love and play with longing –
That the feast might be more joyous
And the time may pass more gaily And the audience be contented.
Our little group is very sophisticated now
We have the Mayor as President –
Two Secretaries – Treasurer and Auditor We run it all with so much ease
We want new members – so join us – please –
Anon. (1993)

The Social side of the Orchestra
To enjoy a break from the stress of the weekly rehearsals, the orchestra organised an annual buffet lunch that followed one
of the Saturday morning sessions. This started in 1996 and involved each member taking along one of a varied selection
of plates of food which were carefully laid out during the rehearsal and well presented. It was a wonderful idea because
everyone could mix and talk together and not discuss only music.
Eventually the buffet lunch was held on a Sunday at Pauntley Court by kind permission of Christine
Skelding, a member of the orchestra. Changing the day meant that all the members’ husbands and wives could join in the social side of the orchestra.

Life Membership
At the Society's Annual General Meeting in November 1988 it was proposed and seconded that any member retiring after
a long service with the Orchestra will be granted a Life Membership and would be presented with a certificate. This was
proposed in recognition of the long service of Miss Carline Crampton, founder conductor who retired in 1988 due to her failing eyesight; and also Mr Stanley Jenkinson, who was a founder member and was forced to retire in 1988 due to his
illness.
The next to receive that honorary award was Mr Raynor Brooks who had been treasurer to the Society from the start until
1990 when he was presented with a crystal violin suitably engraved. He continued as a playing member until 1994 when
he was granted Life Membership.
Miss Winsome Whittingham, a Gloucester musician, joined the orchestra in 1969 playing both violin and viola according
to the needs of the orchestra and on a number of occasions she took on the position of Leader which she enjoyed doing.
After 33 years’ service she had to retire due to her eye-sight failing and also a slight stroke, so in 2002, at the Queen's Jubilee Concert she was made a Life Member.
Mrs June Maddox who also joined the orchestra in 1969 to play her 'cello and then took on the task of secretary in 1983 until she suffered a stroke in 2001. Following her recovery and with help from other members of the Society, she intended
to continue with her playing and the secretarial work, but it was very difficult and so she formally retired in 2003. Life
Membership was granted to her and she received the certificate at the Spring Concert in 2004.
