NEWS from 1st Vice Presidents (Programs) May Class:

Ever taken a class from Bobbie? You learn all kinds of things if you do. We found out in this class that we painted her family dressed up for Halloween riding Seahorses sitting on spider web saddles which were really cro-cheted dollies her mom made that were cut in half. See what I mean? I didn’t ask who the sea creatures were, but I am sure they are relatives also. Much fun!

This piece was painted using a technique our chapter has not done in a while- grisaille. Painting techniques where the first layer is painted only in variation of one color called the underpainting. This builds shadows, highlights and details to produce the desired contrast. The final layer can be glazed with color which is what we did. The color brought our underwater sea creatures and plants to life.

Bobbie also had some of her own past projects for sale and brushes if you needed them. Candy picked an Italian theme for lunch including lasagna, pizza, salad and Italian desserts. We had two guests from Hesperia- Karen Sheppard and Alice Reuter and long- time- no- see member Linda Howard (from Santa Clarita). Always welcome and glad to see you.

June 8th class: Os Pencil Box Onya is ready to teach us Os Rosemaling skills on your pencil box or surface of choice. The flowers and leaves look complicated to paint but Onya guides us step by step-layer after layer to make them look fabulous. This is such a col-orful box, you will want to add it to your home office décor. Paints used are Jo Sonja and Background colors. Patterns available

July 20 class: Rosemary West Can What an awesome opportunity to paint a Rosemary West pattern for our July class. Ramona has it displayed on a wa-tering can that would look terrific on your patio or in your home. You can adapt this pattern to use on the surface of your choice also. Paints used are Jo Sonja acrylic. Don’t forget this class is the 3rd Saturday in July. Project will be on display at the June class for you to view. Patterns available

August 10 class: Sunflower We are so excited to have Janet Mitchell coming from Hesperia to teach our class. She has taught at many of our surrounding chapters, so we look forward to having her visit ours. This project is painted using acrylic paint but done on watercolor paper. Sign up for the class- get the watercolor paper free. We have a notebook showing illustrations of the prep work and the project piece is on display for you to view at the monthly paint ins. Part of the background is stamped on (all done in class). The teacher has a limited number of stamps so if you have one in your stash that you would like to use, please bring it to class. Patterns available

Our own SUSAN SCHOEPPNER became an Ac-credited Decorative Painter (ADP) on her first sub-mission! Her beautifully painted stroke sampler was the only passing entry in the ADP category and it was a stunner! Congratulations to Susan on this prestig-ious accomplishment!

Lost and Found Many years ago, when Mary Jane Todd painted with us, she taught a Santa with Toys on a slender piece of wood. I have two pieces that belong to a couple of gals. They gave them to Sue Bond to finish up. If one of them is yours, please get in touch with me soon. Marilyn Dixon (760) 740-9794 [email protected]

SDP News 2019 Party in the Heartland — Wichita, Kansas

The last annual SDP conference was held May 13-19 in

Wichita, Kansas. Four PHP members were in attendance:

President Linda Silvasy, Leslie Pilcher, Carol Ganzi, and Sherry Choquette. Sherry was elected to a national office, that of Nominating Committee Member. Congratulations, Sherry! Below are some photos from our Convention classes & the Certifi-cation Room! In the July issue, Linda & I will be sharing some of the tips we learned in Priscilla Hauser’s Rose class.

Only three PHP members have birthdays in June. Pam Myers celebrates a milestone birthday on June 3rd and is shared with a lot of famous people I’ve never heard of, but the few I’m aware of are Anderson Cooper, Ellen Corby of The Walton’s fame, and Josephine Baker, who became famous for her “Banana Dance” in the Folies Bergere.

Cynthia Megill celebrates her birthday on June 4 along with Angelina Jolie, Lucky Blue Smith, Russell Brand and Britain’s King George III. Though he defeated France in the Seven Years' War, he lost Britain's American colonies in the American Revolutionary War.

Donna Johnson celebrates her June 9th birthday with Johnny Depp, Natalie Portman, Laurie Hernandez, gymnast, Michael J. Fox, Piff the Magic Dragon of America’s Got Talent fame, and a bunch of YouTube stars. Whoever imagined you could become famous by putting a short video on the internet usually doing dumb things?

All three members are Gemini’s. Their strengths are that they’re adaptable, outgoing, and intelligent - there's never a dull moment with a Gemini. However, their weaknesses are that they're indecisive, impul-

sive, unreliable, and nosy - be careful telling a Gemini your deep-est darkest secrets.

The June birthstones are moonstone, pearl and alexandrite.

Holidays in June are Flag Day (June 14); Fathers Day (the third Sunday of the month); Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the freedom of the slaves in the United States. The name Juneteenth is a combination of the words June and nineteenth. The day is also called Emancipation Day and Freedom Day. Also celebrat-ed in June are National Rose Month, National Dairy Month, African-American Music Month, National Ice Tea Month and National Candy Month.

View from the Garage Sale Table

We will have many items, books, and packets for sale this next Paint-In meeting. We received many donations for this table during our last meeting. Thanks to those gals for helping to recirculate items to reuse and paint. Also, there will be some free DecoArt paint. This paint needs to be STIRRED with a little water. There are lots of colors. I will also have lots of pieces on “Sue’s Stash” table. Many of them have been marked down.

San Diego County Fair 2019: OZsome!

The Fair will open on May 31st with a Wizard of Oz-based theme and run through July 4th. If you are plan-ning on going, please be sure to look at the website for hours and remote parking locations. There will be a new $5.00 fee for the Horse Park location this year, but the other remote lots with shuttle service will be free. Be sure to check out all of the exhibits, including artwork, collections, crafts, quilts, and displays in the Home & Hobby Area. The new group of people managing the Home & Hobby division have been working hard to incorporate feedback and improve their displays and layout of the entries this year.

Go! See who won the Fair and chapter donated awards in the Tole & Decorative Painting division this year!

Maybe someone you know is a ribbon winner.

PHP will have a Make & Take session from 12-4:00 on Sunday, June 30th in Home and Hobby. We were very popular last year, with crowds of children and adults painting on our little wooden boxes and water-color paper fans. It was a lot of fun watching the sparks of creativity and joy of painting on their faces. I am looking for 2 more volunteers to help us with the Make & Take session. This will be a very active and busy session, so you must be able to be on your feet for an extended period of time. Please email me at [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering.
