LETTER FROM THE PASTOR... The 222nd General Assembly (GA) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will be in Portland, Oregon, June 17-25, 2016. As the stated clerk of both Homestead Presbytery and Central Nebraska Presbytery, I will be in attendance. I will be serving as the parliamentarian for the General Assembly committee number 3: General Assembly Procedures. Gina Meester will be one of the ruling elder commissioners from Homestead Presbytery. She will be serving on Committee 10: Mission Coordination. The committees meet Sunday evening through Tuesday afternoon with the plenary beginning on Wednesday morning. General Assembly concludes with worship on Saturday, June 25. During the plenary I will be serving as a floor parliamentarian. The opening worship service is always a phenomenal worship service. You will be able to observe the worship service, live-streamed, on Saturday afternoon, June 18, at 1:00 Central Time (11:00 Pacific Time). I encourage you to watch this event. Links for how you can watch the worship and other events at GA will be shared with you in our church bulletin and weekly emails. What are some of the HOT TOPICS for this year’s assembly? One of the big items for discussion is the structure of the PC(USA) and its agencies. We are currently organized in six different agencies (business), as well as 16 synods (geographical groupings). A committee called “The Way Forward” will be working with what are known as the “Foothills Overtures.” These overtures are asking that we structure the work of General Assembly in a different way. In particular, there will be a lot of discussion about the Presbyterian Mission Agency and the Office of the General Assembly. There are recommended changes to the various parts of the Book of Order, as well as business items which deal with topics such as social justice, peacemaking, immigration, the environment, and the Middle East. For information you can find the text of the overtures at www. pc-biz.org, which is the website the commissioners will use. Look under each committee to see the business that they have been assigned. According to GA Moderator Heath Rada who spoke in Omaha on May 16, one of the “hot topics” will probably be the proposed overture to divest from fossil fuel production. Even though it is a long meeting, and a lot of late nights (some nights the meeting is not over until midnight or later!), I enjoy attending General Assembly. The worship services are some of the most inspiring worship services I have attended. It is like a big family gathering or reunion. The only time I see many of my old friends and colleagues is at General Assembly. There is also an exhibit hall where many vendors have giveaways, sell products, or provide information about their products and services to churches. There are vendors selling products made by people in developing nations. Buying these products helps people in these nations have a sustainable life. I always love going to the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation booth, where they sell their books. (It is like being a kid in a candy store, for me!)

Disciples Under Construction

JUNE 2016

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

To everyone who has contributed to the Triennium Fund! We have made the April and May payments of $875 each and we have enough to cover the June payment. Our final payment will be due in July but the amount of this installment will be determined at a later date and will likely be less than $875. Based on this, it looks like we are probably only about $400 from our goal. We’ll keep you posted as we get more information, and thanks again for your generosity toward this opportunity for our youth!!

If you haven’t been able to make it to Sunday School recently you’ve missed lessons on the Beatitudes, Creation v. Evolution, Bible Blackouts and the Pentecost Party. No two Sundays are the same! We’re on break from Sunday School until August 21, but we can’t go 3 months without enjoying each other’s company and getting together for some fun. So watch your emails for what we’ll be doing this summer. If you want to get involved or just want more information, contact Patty Wahlgren at [email protected].
