The following short article is from the Dementia Care Australia newsletter. Dementia Care Australia is an independent information and education organization specializing in supporting both people with dementia and their care givers; be they family members, professionals, employers or friends. For more information about Dementia Care Australia, check out their webpage at http://www.dementiacareaustralia.com

Recalling Someone Special

When people with dementia find it difficult to remember someone special or important in their lives, such as when you mention a son or daughter's name and they cannot get a mind's eye picture of that loved person, here is a great way to enable them to remember:

Make a good CLEAR display of photographs of people who visit the person or family and friends whom you talk about often. This can be placed on the fridge, a door, a pin board, or similar. Magnetic photo frames can be attached directly onto the fridge or a magnetic board.

People with dementia remember in pictures, just like you and I. We know from research that our long-term memory is more likely to store experiences that are unusual, colorful, humorous or full of sensory experiences. We can apply these same principles to the way we take and select photos of visitors, family or friends to help the person remember them.

If you’d like to be added or taken off our mailing list, please email [email protected] or call 785-3302

Positions are available in our Dietary Department. Day and evening hours available. Please call Anslie for more information at 308-785-3302.

We’d like to introduce Jodi Lerdall, granddaughter of ECC resident Dorothy Lerdall, to everyone as our new Beautician. Please help welcome her. She will be here on Thursdays most weeks. We’d also like to thank Dorthea Neimeier for her service to ECC as our beautician for many years.

FYI: The holiday season is coming upon us. If you are planning to eat with your loved one for Christmas please let us know by the 22nd at the latest if possible. Also if you bring in clothing please mark it and let the charge nurse know so that it can be added to their inventory sheet. Thanks for your help with this.

Holiday Decorating Safety Tips

We encourage you to decorate your loved one’s room for the holidays as you like. Our Fire Marshall has some guidelines for us to ensure everyone’s safety: -We must use Medical Grade extension cords only, please request one from a staff member -Lights that are UL Listed are okay, we recommend “LED” lights as they stay cooler -Small fiber optic trees are okay -Any decoration placed on a resident’s door that opens to a corridor must be flame retardant and made of artificial materials, fresh pine arrangements are beautiful, but the Fire Marshall says they are a hazard, sorry! -If you have any questions feel free to ask our Maintenance Supervisor, Carl Benson, 308-785-3302.

I remember the tree—decorated so bright,

and tramping thru’ snow on a cold winter’s night— the holly and mistletoe where lovers would kiss, and all the great gifts—that’s what I sure miss…

But most of all, when I hear Christmas songs, I think of the Christ Child and where he belongs—

deep in our hearts and memories too, in church and at home with more than a few.

In ‘Nativity Scenes’ on everyone’s yard, in windows of stores, and in Christmas cards.

I long to see those sweet images of— children in school plays bowed with haloes above.

To hear cheery greetings as strangers pass by, and know His spirit shall live—never die if we not let tradition and God disappear, and celebrate His birth, year after year…

Oh, Heavenly Father, forgive us for straying— for parties and shopping, too much holidaying. Bring us to our senses—turn back the dark tide,

for we need you, dear Savior, right here by our side.
