Hello Ms. Harris. I am Ms. Jones, the audiologist. I will perform a hearing screening.

Page 3: The Hearing Screening

A hearing screening is a very short test. We will see if you might have problems hearing.

Page 4: The Hearing Screening

Before we start, please let me know your concerns.

I have been a musician for many years. I listen to very loud music. I am worried I have lost some hearing.

Page 5: The Hearing Screening

That is a big concern for people who play loud instruments.

It is a good idea to check your hearing.

Page 6: The Hearing Screening

First, let me show you an audiogram. We use these to show where sounds are.

I can see where all the sounds are in this chart.

Page 7: The Hearing Screening

www.handsandvoices.org/

The audiogram shows where different sounds are.

High and faint sounds, like

birds, are more on top.

Loud sounds, like tools, are

more in the bottom

Page 8: The Hearing Screening

See? We want to see if you can hear everything in this chart.

We also want to see if you can hear the sounds we use to speak.

Page 9: The Hearing Screening

This shows us where our speech sounds are.

Page 10: The Hearing Screening

It is very interesting. I can see where all the sounds are. I did not know it was so complicated.

The vowel sounds appear lower than most consonants. They must be louder than the p sound.

Page 11: The Hearing Screening

You are learning fast. Also the f, s and k sound are not that loud.

Page 12: The Hearing Screening

The next audiograms show where the sounds are. They are in blue. Also, I want you to look at where normal hearing is.

Page 13: The Hearing Screening

These are the marks of a person who does not have a hearing problem.

The red marks show the right ear. The blue marks show the left ear.

Page 14: The Hearing Screening

If a persons blue and red marks are here, this means he may have a problem. If the marks are below, then we also say they have a bigger a problem.

This big blue section shows our speech sounds.

Page 15: The Hearing Screening

Thank you very much for all the information. Now I have a better idea of what you are testing.

I am glad that it helped. Now, we are going to start.

Page 16: The Hearing Screening

We use an audiometer to make the sounds you will hear.

Page 17: The Hearing Screening

I will put this headset on your ears. That is where you will hear the sounds.

Page 18: The Hearing Screening

I will also check your ears with an otoscope.

It will not hurt.

Page 19: The Hearing Screening

I will look to see if your ear is healthy. If there are any objects or a lot of wax. I will see if you have any holes or scars.

Page 20: The Hearing Screening

Everything looks fine. I don’t see anything that might cause hearing problems.

That is good to hear.

Page 21: The Hearing Screening

I will put this headset on your ears.

Page 22: The Hearing Screening

Listen carefully to the sounds. If you hear a sound, lift your hand.

That was the exam. I will discuss with you the results. Ready?

Yes. I was very easy to do.

Page 27: The Hearing Screening

Let me show you an audiogram. This is where we write the results.

Oh yes. Just like the ones you showed me before.

Page 28: The Hearing Screening

This is an audiogram. We will put the results in this chart.

It shows how well a person can hear different sounds.

Page 29: The Hearing Screening

I used an audiogram to write the results.

Before I show you your results, I will show you what normal hearing looks like.

Page 30: The Hearing Screening

Remember, we had said that a person’s normal

hearing is marked here.

With these results a person should be able to hear almost everything.

Page 31: The Hearing Screening

This is what your audiogram looks like.

Yes, I can see a different. My audiogram looks different than the normal one.

Page 32: The Hearing Screening

Today, we made the marks here.

But, both ears do have problems hearing sounds.

Some of the marks are

normal.

Page 33: The Hearing Screening

It is good that you came for this short test. It looks like you are having hearing problems.

Now, we need to do a longer test. That is called a complete audiological exam.

Page 34: The Hearing Screening

I am glad I am finding out about my hearing. Now I can start to see what to do.

With a complete test we learn more. Then we can tell you what to do.

The complete test may tell us the cause. You might need to go to another doctor.

Page 35: The Hearing Screening

The test will tell us if you need a hearing aid.

The test will also tell us if you will need therapy to help you undersand people when they talk to you.

Page 36: The Hearing Screening

Thank you very much for your help. I have learned a lot. I want the complete exam soon.

I am happy we helped you. We will give you a date for you to come back.
