Mr. Crick, the eminent revoln

ill his scheming. So far as cm In
learned, he ma le AO calculationwhatever Of the strength of hi
chosen opposition. He failed ul
tcrlv to figure on "what the Othei
fellows would be doing." Crick
even as much of a general ft!
the wicked hoy who DOMtfally de
clared that it would lie easy CtlOUgl

drilled soldiers, with two of thenon active duty all the time. It di
not occur to him that the sixt;Sharpshooters would le on dec)
eager for the fray. The Citizens Guard, the silci M
force commanded by Frmk B. Mc
Stocker, had some attention fron
Crick. He did manage to Inctttdi
one officer of that reserve in thi
list of persons to he seized.
Crick is a careless sort of a chap
Perhaps he is a fool. Probably In
is a tool. He his been getting ;
salan from some one. His linanci..
backing was light and his fightin
cohorts seemed to vanish into thi
air long before the battle wa
scented from afar.
FUN WITH A WITNESS.

brought to bear all his skill andThe extended conte-betwee- n
attorney and wliness wa
one of the features of the case. Mi .
Ashford 'rattled" the man on thi
stand. To do this is the height o
the desire of a . Th.
fire was a hot one. There anlikely many baek-raeket- s in Vai
Giesen's career that assume for-
bidding shapes in the glare of day.
Mr. Ashford had all hints of thes.in his battery and used them effect
ivelv. The prosecution was a hi
nervous when Van Giesen hecam
mixed on dates. This is always :
vital point. Attorney-Genera- l
Smith came to the rescue of hi;
witness and the damage was sooimended. After a rigid cross-e- x
animation of nearly four hoursVan Giesen's story in the mail
was practically unchanged. When the defeti e is undertaker
the attorneys for the Governmentwill do some cross examiningSome of the witnesses for the
prisoners are hound to be vulner-
able at some points.
Thbbb is only one explanationof Crick's claim that the insurgent-wer-
to have assistance from II. li
M. S. Champion. The explanationis that Crick invented the story.
It was a year ago today thai

This is Kainehameha SchoolPounder's Day. It is the anniversary of the birth of that noble woman, Bernice Pauahi Bishop. ThisHawaiian calendar feature wasmarked by the formal opening ofthe Kamehameha School foi Girlsand the Chas. R. Bishop MuseumAnnex.
The exercises began at 2 o'clockthis afternoon. With the literaryprogram, the sports and viewingthe new school and the Annex, tosay nothing of the manual trainingdepartment, there were visitors onthe grounds till after J o'clock.
At 8 this morning the Kameha-meha boys with Prof. Richards andtheir band visited the grave of MrsBishop and covered the last restingplace of friend with missions in other countriesflowers
Rev. C. M. Hyde offered the in-
vocation this afternoon and waspresident of the large gatheringi'he included nearly all especialtne oovernment omcials and pro-
minent citizens. Bishop ball wascrowded to its utmost.
After the prayer, students sangthe Thou dairy farmingAlmighty Ruler. President Hydethen introduced Col. W. F. Allenthe representative of Chas. R.Bishop, as the orator of the occa-sion. Col. Allen spoke very earn-estly and was listened to mostattentively. He said:

but felt it a duty to accent. ThatMr. Itinhnp in with you today in spirity. u all know, and though alwnt inoil-so- his imprest in these schoolsnever wanes. By correspondence withthe trustees, principulB, ami others, liehas kept weil posted in all the progressyou have made. On this the natal dayof Hernice Pauahi Hishop, the foundersday of this Institution, such a grandmonument to her love and care for herlieople. it is beyond my powers to dojustice to tile occasion or theme, 'lothMrs. Hishop and her husband fully real-ISe-

sure the stability of the people, ami sothey have Uevoteii their nest thought, and much of their property to carry outthese ideas.
To you, trustees, principals am)teacherB the responsibility of carryingout the wishes of the founders of thisinstitution belongs, and from the ex-
perience of the few years theopening, no fears are entertained of theultiuiale result.
To you, boys and girls of Kameha-alali- a
School. 1 would say that to showyour appreciation of the great gifts ofjmir benefactors, you should everstrive to tulte advantage of all that ishere offered you, so that In the futureyou can show by your industrious andvirtuous lives what the KainehamehaSchool has done for you.
On Is half of Mr Bishop. I thank youall for slum ing such an appreciationfor the grand work and memory ofi he founder of this institution BernicePauahi Bishop.
Mrs. A. A. Haalelea, who hasalways evinced a deep interest inthe school, made a splendid address. The lady was especiallyforceful in her remarks on the benefits to arise from the conduct of theschool for girls. The ability ofMrs. Haalelea as a public speakersurprised even those who know herbest.
The final address of the afternoonwas by Miss Pope, the experiencededucator who is to be principal ofthe girls' school. words weresuch that all could profit by heed-ing tbem. It is apparent that withMiss Pope in charge the new schoolwill realize the fondest hopes ofthose who wish it well.

The instrument consists of twosuperposed disks with a Itko Uttttbef ofboles, one disk being stationary, and theother revolving, while at the same timeair or steam forced through the boles.W hen the holes are opposite each other, the steam will pass. When not opposite, the passage of the Steam L-- stopped.
Thus when one of the disks revolves theiteam passes In a series of puffs, and ifthese puffs succeed each other with lUfOolent frequency a note is produced, risingin pitch with the rapidity of revolutionand inert using in power with the pressureof the steam. The disks are revolved byA small steam engine, which also opensand closes a valve to allow for the passageof the steam and thus gives what is knownas the characteristic sound, for a sirenused as a fog signal does not sound con-
tinuously, but gives a certain number ofblasts of a definite length per minute. Thesteam U supplied by a boiler both for the.engine and the siren, and to avoid posslble breakdowns the boilers, engines andsirens are always in duplicate.
