What GSBC can do for you Derma-pen micro-needling Do you want a natural way to get rid of your wrinkles? Meet Cherie Du Plessis, Aesthetic Practitioner and currently the team’s specialist in Dermapen micro- needling. Micro needling with Dermapen is amazingly versatile and can be used to treat the following: Dull, tired looking skin Fine lines and wrinkles Scarring Sun damaged skin Uneven texture Stretch marks By needling the skin to stimulate the underlying dermis, the body is encouraged to produce new collagen and elastin which enables skin cells to “repair” themselves, thus encouraging the skin to become thicker, plumper and more youthful. The channels made from the micro- needles also allows topical gels and creams to be absorbed more effectively. Working in the CI exclusively for The Guernsey Skin & Beauty Centre, Cherie has attained a gold standard in medical micro-needling. Next time find out about fat reduction with our Exilis machine. Sun damage and Freckles Facts Did you know that children aren’t born with freckles? The average age that children develop freckles is between two and four years old when they have become mobile and get out in the sun more often. In fact those little freckly faces that so charm adults are a sign of the skin trying to protect itself from sun-damage. They tend to occur more in paler skinned children with fair or red hair, As children become older and are exposed to more of the sun’s ultra-violet rays, melanocytes a type of cell at the base layer of the skin react to the UV exposure to produce the pigment melanin. This is known as melanogenesis. Melanin cells are black and they block out the UV B rays which damage the underlying epidermis. Lighter-skinned people have low basal levels of melanogenesis and this results in the freckles patchwork seen on fair skinned people. Having freckles doesn’t mean to say your child will develop cancer but it does suggest that they are more vulnerable to it. The GSBC team recommends: Keep your child out of the sun - especially around midday. Keep them in the shade where possible. Put a hat on your child and a good sunscreen if they are over the age of six months. What did the Romans ever do for us? Round about 100 AD the Romans’ preference was for fair, white complexions. To achieve this they used white lead, white marl and chalk powder. For rouge cheek colour they used wine dregs, mulberry juice, rose and poppy petals, red chalk and crocodile dung which historically never fully caught on. Next time round – what the Egyptians did for us
