Modal: can A modal or modal auxiliary is a helping verb. We use the modal auxiliary

can to express ability.

Question Statement: Positive

modal + subject + verb subject + modal + verb

Can you hike in the mountains? You can hike in the mountains.

Question Statement: Negative

modal + subject + verb subject + modal + not + verb

Can you swim in the desert? You cannot/can’t swim in the desert.
