Introduction

CONGRATULATIONS! You have successfully traveled in the world’s first time machine! You are still in the United States but the year is 1930. You are quickly finding out that the year 1930 is nothing like the year 2009. The United States is experiencing a large economic downfall. Hundreds of jobs have been lost, families are being evicted from their homes, and people can no longer afford basic necessities.

Can you and your family survive?

• Your Task:

You will be assigned to a group. Your group will be using an assignment family, circumstances, and occupation, to create a budget for one month. After the budget is created, you will write a two paragraph reflection on your experience in the year 1930.

Process1. You will be assigned to a group, A, B or C. Each group will be

responsible for creating a one month budget according to their family size, occupation, and circumstances.

2. After you receive your group assignment from the teacher, please look at your group’s family size, occupation, and circumstances.

3. Before you begin to build your family’s one month budget, please see the budget guidelines for items that you must take into consideration (i.e. food and rent).

4. Begin to build your family’s one month budget by using the 1930’s pricing links. Don’t forget to take your assigned circumstances into consideration.

5. After you have completed the budget, each member of the group will write a two paragraph reflection on their experience with creating the budget.

Group A

• Family: 2 children and 2 adults• Occupation: Factory worker– Weekly Salary = $16.89

• Circumstances:– Your vacuum cleaner has been broken beyond repair.

Please purchase a new vacuum cleaner for $30.00. – This month is your daughter’s birthday. She would

like a doll for her birthday. Please purchase a dollar for $1.95.

Group B

• Family: 4 children and 2 adults• Occupation: Doctor– Weekly Salary = $61.89

• Circumstances: – Your car has been broken beyond repair. Please

purchase a new car.– This month is your tenth wedding anniversary;

please buy your family a new radio.

Group C

• Family: 1 child and 2 adults• Occupation: Farmer– Weekly Salary = $1.78

• Circumstances:– Your boss could not afford to pay you for your last

week of work. Please deduct one week’s salary from your monthly income.

– It is getting hot outside! Please purchase sunscreen.

Budget Guidelines

• You must purchase enough food to feed your entire family.

• You must supply your family with some form of shelter.

• You may not spend more than your salary allows.
