One of the oldest perceptions in politics; Republicans get more campaign funds than Democrats, has just been shattered.

A report on where Political Action Committees spend their money has just been released, and it clearly shows who gets the largest share of special interest campaign funds.

Between January 1,1983 and November 26, 1984 contrib-utions to Democratic candidates from 552 political action comit-tees totaled nearly $3.76millioo. Republican candidates received PAC contributions of only $1.9 million.

Labor has long been perceived as a Democratic stronghold, and the report certainly shows where they spend their money. Labor unions were the biggest spen-ders. giving $1.4 million to Democrats and $26,647 to Re-publicans. The UAW was the single largest donor. Three local UAW PACs and the state UAW

T urn to

PAC gave $536,018 to Democ-ratet and nothing to Republi-cans.

Business has often been as-sociated with support of Repub-lican candidates. A person would never know that from looking at the report. In business and insurance donations, Demo-crats fared as well as or better than the GOP. Democrats re-ceived nearly $1.27 million from business PACs compared to about $1.23 million for Republi-cans. Insurance PACs donated $113,120 to Democrat candi-dates, while they contributed $91,246 to Republicans.

Nearly two-thirds of all the PAC money contributed in 1983 and 1984 went to Democrats.

Democrats claim the report is a smokescreen to draw attention away from other issues. Instead, it looks like the report has cleared the air as to who is bene-fiting from special interest dona-tions.

Garden Club News How did your garden grow?

Productive and easier to weed and water? What did you grow? My wax beans in a space 2* X 3* with 56 plants planted 9 to a square foot provided us with a continuous supply of produce for 10 days plus. The rest is a jungle of tomatoes, cucumbers, pep-pers, and a melon taking over the old lettuce space.

The Showboat Garden Gub will have a program on this type of gardening next spring. Watch for it. Anyone interested in house plants, African Violets,

conservation of resources and ccok)gy, planting flowers and ways of making Lowell attrac bve and other themes of general interest are invited to attend any or all meetings of the Showboat Garden Gub Meetings will be publicized. Call Ruby Leeman, president, for information at 897-7992.

The Gub will meet Monday September 9, in the Congrega tional Church Lounge at 7:}0 P.M. Cecil DeRushia will show some of his rock collection and give interesting information about his hobby. I

HOMESPUN DEVOTIONS

by Pauline E. Spray

.. the Lord loveth the righte-ous (Psalm 146:8)

Every women has an ideal man. I have mine, too. He stands five feet and ten inches with his shoes on. His once black hair has turned white at the temples, and smile wrinkles frame his brown eyes. He wears a size 41 suit and is warm-hearted, friendly, and very kind.

God has His ideal man, too. He does not measure him by the size of suit he wears, nor by the degrees at the end of his name. He has a different standard by which He measures His man. God looks upon the intents of an individual's heart and judges him accordingly. He spurns the haughty but loves the humble.

The ideal man of God eschews evil and walks uprightly; he serves God, not from a sense of duty, but out of a heart of love He seeks not to please those about him, but he keeps his eyes on his Heavenly Father and st-rives to do His will at all times.

God's ideal man relies upon divine strength and trusts his Heavenly Father unquestion £ ingly. He followeth after righte ousness and will not go unre-warded.

And God's standard for women is just the same as for men. Let us strive to be "His ideal."-

Prayer Dear God, help me to meet Thy requirements and qual-ify for 'Thy ideal." May 1 ever do all of Thy will and love Thee more each day I live. Amen ^

I worship thee, sweet will of God,

And all thy ways adore. And every day I live I long

To love thee more and more.

As Lowell residents know, part of our tax dollars are used to pro-vide trash pick-up to residents and businesses in the city. Restau-rants and businesses generating large amounts of trash are required to rent a dumpster. Being the tightwad that I am. I have avoided the dumpster rental option.

Here at the Ledger, I would say we are borderline. Some weeks our trash donation is well within reason. Other weeks, when we've been exceptionally busy, we generate a pretty healthy pile of empty cartons, paper trimmings and scrap paper. On these weeks the gar-bage truck crew grumbles about us getting a dumpster, and my back shop guys argue that it's only a once-in-awhile problem. A bit of an on-going confrontation has developed.

We once had a larger than normal waste barrel that my guys used to fill when all the smaller waste containers were overflowing. Packed with strips of paper trimmings, it often got quite heavy. The garbage truck crew complained about the big barrel regularly, but my guys kept on using it. One week the garbage truck crew solved that problem, they just threw it right in the truck. My guys were upset, hut I smoothed them over, and probably averted an all-out war.

Another time we broke up some wooden pallets that had accumu-lated over the years. We sat the boards out with the weekly trash. Fhe garbage truck crew ignored them. We left them out the follow-ing week. They ignored them again. Finally, about the third week or so, one of the the garbage truck guys grumbled something to the ef-fect of. This ain't no lumber truck ya know!" My guys found another way to get rid of the boards. I don 't know where they went, and 1 don't think 1 want to know.

Last Thursday was declared a designated cleaning day. The of-fice girls and I wore old clothes, and spent the entire day cleaning the front offices, darkroom and paste-up area. We filled dozens of boxes with old paste-ups, old catalogs, old order forms, etc. We even filled boxes with old boxes. I went so far as to clean the front sidewalk and street, and filled five, one foot square boxes with dirt and weeds. Of course we had our regular weekly offering too.

Friday morning it was all piled up at our back door. It was a huge pile. When the garbage truck headed down the alley past our office windows, an alert was sounded. We all cowered inside as box after box, barrel after barrel and kig after bag were thrown into the truck. When they finally roared down the alley, we ventured out to see how much they had left us.

Lo and behold, they had taken everything! We couldn't believe it. Five days later I'm still in shock. Of course I haven't dared look out back to see if we have a shiny new dumpster cither.

Ford Aerostar Introduced Jennifer Dine attends Orientation at Alma College

/

Mark and Nancy Powell are shown alongside a new Ford Aeroftar van. Powell is the General Manager of HaroW Zeigler Ford, and was on hand at an introductory showing of the new mW-vm in West Michigan. The show was held at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel on Tuesday, August 27. Area dealers and their guests saw three of the new vehicles and were treated to Bve nnttk. cocktails and hors d oeuvres. The new Aerostars are already beginning to show up on Zeigler's lot.

Thirty upperclass student vol-unteers on the Orientation Com-mittee (O.C.) are ready to help 10 Kent County students make a smooth transition from high school to college during a 10-day freshman Preterm Orientation at Alma College. Among them was Jennifer Dine, a 1983 L.H.S. graduate. Jenny is the danghter of Robert and Judith Dine of 12500 72nd Stmt. Alto.

Starting August 31. the class of 1989 freshmen will be intro-duced to Alma*s campus life through a series of planned pro-grams allowing students to ^Ad-just academically and socially, reflect on values and set goals," says Kathy Callahan, assistant dean of students. Also during the Preterm Orientation. the freshmen take placement tests, register for fall classes and begin using campus resources such as the library and the computer cen-ter.

For the academic facet of Pre-term 1985, each student takes one mini-seminar from among 25 offered. The unusual semi-nars - including "Robots," "Di-nosaurs and Dodo," and "Survey of Dance Forms," - are designed to help each freshman develop and use writing, studying, test-taking and speaking skills.

To help the freshmen feel comfortable at Alma, several so-cial activities also are slated for Preterm, including a luau dance, a buffet on the lawn of the Presi-dent's home, a variety show, a "walk-in" drive-in movie, and a toga party. "Alma's Preterm re-ally settles the freshmen in and prepares them for things to comc,w adds Callahan. "They have the campus all to them-selves for a week which gives them a chance to make friends, to feel comfortable about cam-

pus life and to experience Alma's academic rigor beforef. the Fall Term 1985 classes begin September 10."

VITAMINS A recent review of vitamin supplementation was presented in

'The Medical Letter" which stated that about 40% of adults take some form of vitamins on a daily basis. Most of the medical com-munity feels that in a normal adult with a balanced diet, no vitamin supplementation is indicated and that this is a waste of money. For ^ the past several years there has been a great deal of conuoversy in w the press regarding megadoses of vitamins. Certain respected medi-cal researchers have claimed that large doses of these vitamins will cure everything from the common cold to prevention of cancer! We have no argument with taking one multivitamin a day but taking large doses of certain vitamins such as vitamin A and D can cause severe toxicity.

In certain clinical situations, vitamin supplements are indicated. Although not all-inclusive, some of the more common simations are presented below.

INFANTS: Most pediatricians and family practitioners recom-mend an iron supplement in breast-fed babies to prevent anemia This is commonly prescribed as a multiple vitamin with iron. In the £ Lowell area, we also recommend flouride supplements to prevent cavities in children who do NOT have city water which already has been flouridated.

PREGNANCY: A prenatal vitamin is usually prescribed because of the mother's increased need for folic acid and iron. -

MENSTRUATING WOMEN: Sometimes iron supplements or multiple vitamins with iron are recommended for women who have a heavy monthly flow to prevent iron deficiency anemia.

POST MENOPAUSAL WOMEN: Because of the potential for osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) in women whose periods have stopped, either naturally or after hysterectomy with removal of t h e ^ ovaries, calcium supplementation is indicated. The amount recom-mended is usually 1500 mgs. per day.

SPECIAL DIETS: VegeUuians who do not eat dairy products should probably take vitamin B12 to prevent a certain form of anemia. Individuals on a low caloric diet less than 1200 calories per day may require a once-a-day multivitamin supplement, especially if this diet is maintained for any length of time.

There are a multitude of other medical situations such as anemia, certain bone abnormalities, and gastro-intestinal diseases that will require specific vitamin therapy but these should be discussed with your doctor. The list above is only a recommendation for the general public and most healthy adults would be wise to follow the recom-mendation of an unknown philosopher ~ "Everything in Modera A tion

Board approves millageforOct. ballot LAAC Center, cont'd.

At a ipecial meeting of the Lowell Board of Educabon on August 18, the Board approved a millage proposal lo place before the voien oo an October 7 ballot. The proposal seeks approval lo levy 1.9 mills beguming in 1986 and 1.4 mills beginning 1987 through 1993. The ballot lan-guage clearly stales that funds fatsed could only be spent lo re-pair and maintain existing school facilities. None of the additional funds requested can be used to fi-nance raises for employees or pay other school expenses. Dol-lars generated can be spent for maintenance and major repairs of buildings and grounds now owned by the school district.

A 1.9 mill increase is re-quested beginning in 1986 to generate nearly $400,000 for the sole purpose of replacing most of the middle school roof. Con-tinued attempts to patch and re-pair portions of the roof have failed to stop interior damage from water. Beginning in 1987 the millage levied for repair and maintenance projects directly re-lated to energy conservation would drop to 1.4 mills and con-tinue at thiu level through 1993.

Projects planned between 1987 and 1991 are solely related to maintenance and repair pro-jects which will help the district reduce its consumption of elec-trical power and natural gas. Pro-jects planned between 1991 and 1993 include maintenance and repair of parking lots, building floors, entrance ways, bleacher repair and grounds improve-ment.

A conservative estimate from the district's engineering firm show that when all energy meas-ures are installed as planned and schedule^Tlbrdiatrict will save

nearly $1,000,000 on gas and Amundsen, and Gayc Nauta as electricity atone over the next its general co-chairpersons at an eight years. earlier meeting. "Energize Our

With the funds provided by these two organizations, the LAAC was able to renovate the office portion of the former Soitex Company, now owned by King Milling Company. King Milling very generously offered the use of the portion of this building to the LAAC without charge to pro-vide an aft center for the commu-nity.

The gallery at the center, which is being renovated under the direction of LAAC member John Harper, was first used for a student show in early June.
