Joyful! Joyful! That's how we feel when we gather in the
chancel to help lead worship in song! It is so much fun to be
part of our choir fellowship, and we are so grateful for the
voices that have joined us these past few years.
As the little girl on TV says, "More,
more. If it's good, we want more."
Just like that little girl, Lynn and the
choir are eager to welcome more
joyful voices! Since our annual
Christmas Cantata is coming up in
December, you have a golden op-
portunity to "try out" your vocal
chords.
Come on over on Thursday evenings
at 7:00 PM. You would be amazed at
how great you feel when you lift
your voice up to the Lord in song!

Pastor Cal’s Corner
Dear Friends,
Happy Thanksgiving! It is that time of year when we pause to reflect upon our blessings and to thank God for all that we have. The first verse of a popular Thanksgiving hymn reads,
“Now thank we all our God with heart and hand and voices, who wondrous things has done, in
whom the world rejoices; who from our mother’s arms, hath blessed us on our way, with count-
less gifts of love, and still is ours today.”
Life gets pretty busy and many of us rarely pause to think about the blessing we have received from God. That’s why it is good to set aside a day where we can stop, look around and take stock of what we have and where we have been. Thanksgiving allows us the time and space to give thanks to God.
I love the theme of this year’s stewardship campaign: Adventures in Thanksgiving. It is perfect for us. We have been blessed in so many ways here at Central Baptist. Yet, we have been so busy that we have-n’t really taken the time to stop and celebrate what God is doing in our midst. For the next few weeks we will take that time in worship, in meetings and at our special events to lift up the things we are thankful for and then make it a point to give God the glory.
Opportunities for which we can give thanks abound in our ministry here at Central Baptist. We have a core of faithful volunteers who serve God with joyful hearts. It is a pleasure just to be around them be-cause they feed our spirits. Some of them give their time and energy to ministries that encourage and build up our membership. We see them in action, week after week, as we gather for worship, fellowship, study and prayer. Others commit themselves to ministries that reach out with the good news to our com-munity. They are the hands and feet of Christ delivering hope to the broken hearted. Both are gifts from God.
We have also been blessed with members like you who are generous beyond expectations. When I think about the way you have supported the church with your financial gifts to our ongoing ministry and mis-sion budgets, the numerous special appeals and fundraisers, the special programs like Vacation Bible School and Operation Christmas Child, my heart swells with gratitude to God for you. It reflects on your commitment to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, strength and mind.
When I look at our ministry, I am also thankful for those members and friends who remembered us in their wills. Today we are living off their legacy. For the last few years our operating budget has been bol-stered by tens of thousands of dollars that come from our endowment. This year alone, we will call for nearly $100,000 from our investments. What a blessing that is! These friends, who faithfully served be-side us in life, are still contributing to the ministry from heaven above. I know that this practice continues even now as others are planning to do the same thing so that their giving can outlive them too.
Finally I thank God for our Stewardship committee. They are calling on us to think about our ministry and to lift up a vision for the coming years. They are asking us to share our hopes, our dreams, our priori-ties for the ministry as we move into 2014 and beyond. I can’t wait to see what God has put on your hearts. For God has put it in our hands and our hearts to shape the ministry our of church going forward. It is time for us to, in the immortal words of Captain Jon Luc Picard of Star Trek fame, “Make it so.”
God bless. Happy Thanksgiving! See you in church. Cal

Treasurer’s Report It’s exciting to see all the new activities planned for CBC this fall and we’ve seen an increase in giving to support them. We were almost $2,000 over Plan for September. The expenses were also almost $1,000 less than Plan, to effectively reduce the annual deficit by $3,000 in just one month! Thank you for your generous support of the church missions.

The Trustees have been working on a variety of repair and maintenance projects. We have engaged Advanced Improvements to perform temporary roof repairs to our sanctuary roof. This should give us 2-3 years of protec-tion against leaks until we can formulate a plan to fix it permanently. Also, by the time of this newsletter’s publica-tion, the timbering and north fence clean up projects should be complete. In mid November, a new 4 foot fence will be installed on the nursery school playground. This project, along with the upper driveway striping, will include new signage for both parking and playground safety. On October 27, our 2014 Stewardship Campaign (Adventure in Thanksgiving), kicked off with a church lunch-eon before our spending plan meeting. This year’s campaign consists of trying to reach an income goal of $150,000.00. We ask you to prayerfully consider increasing your pledges 10% in order for us to achieve this goal. Also, incorporated with your stewardship materials is a pamphlet on your three wishes for our church ministries here at CBC. We ask that you fill out and return this document in order for us to plot our ministry’s goals. Please keep the church and each other in prayer as we set about the business that Christ would have us do in our local, regional and world ministries.
Yours in Christ, George H. Champlin Jr.

Fall is my favorite time of year. We’re past the hot humid days of summer and into the cool days of autumn. November brings us all the bounty of the harvest and we end the month with the celebration of Thanksgiving. We’ve all heard the story of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving, but they were celebrating more than just a good harvest. They were celebrating life. They had survived a brutal first winter where many of their friends and families had perished. Yet after all the hardships, they were still thankful to God and all that God had given them. We see this in the Bible too. In Philippians Paul is imprisoned in Rome, yet he is writing to the Philippians about how thank-ful he is.
“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to comple-tion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:3-6
We all have a lot to be thankful for even if we have suffered some hardship or disappointment over the past year. Because no matter what has happened, we all have Jesus Christ in our lives, and that is a lot to be thankful for. So in this month of thanksgiving, let us all give thanks and praise to our Lord.
“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” Psalm 100

Giving Thanks “Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his love endures forever!” Psalms 106:1 We talk about counting our blessings—let’s do it! Take the gratitude challenge: Write the names of 10 living people you are thankful for. Write the names of 10 people who have died that you are thankful for. Write 10 physical abilities you are thankful for. Write 10 things about today that you are thankful for. Write 10 things about the gospel you are thankful for. This list is only the beginning of what God has provided for us. As we practice being grateful, we will notice more. “I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.” Psalm 34:1

There is Power in the Precious Blood of JesusThere is Power in the Precious Blood of JesusThere is Power in the Precious Blood of JesusThere is Power in the Precious Blood of Jesus
I recently sat beside the bedside of a patient who was receiving a blood transfusion. As I viewed the pole on which the bag of blood was hung, the drops of blood coming down through the transparent tube, then coursing on into the body of the patient, my thoughts turned to the spiritual life saving blood of Christ shed on the cross. I began to see the pole as the cross with the body of Christ hung there, His blood flowing down to us in an act of love, as he redeemed us and freed us from the burden of our sins. I remembered a devotion written by P. R. Lindland of Penny Farms, Florida for worldwide communion Sunday, 2009. It appeared in The Secret Place devotional and gives a perspective on communion that is far better than an I could write. So, I share it with you in its entirety.
According to an ancient tradition, Zacchaeus lived in Jericho till he was an old man. Each morn-ing at sunrise he went for a walk, always returning in a happy mood. One morning his wife secretly followed him. He went to the tree he had climbed when he first saw Jesus and from which he had responded to Jesus’ call. Zacchaeus watered the tree, knelt by it to pray, and passed his hand fondly over its trunk before leaving. Later, when asked about it, he explained, “It is thanks to that tree that I met him whom my soul loves.” This tree had sacramental significance to Zacchaeus; it was a sacred memorial. The time he spent there each day conveyed blessing through a sense of God’s presence. It made vivid the real-ity of Christ’s claims upon him. It refreshed his spirit. It could do this only though a combination of physical and spiritual factors: the tree linked the present moment with the past event, his meeting with Jesus, and his openness of mind and heart to the presence of God. In the Lord’s Supper we have a sacred memorial, through which blessing and a sense of God’s presence may be conveyed and a new commitment achieved . As refreshed and strengthened in-wardly. We become newly aware of the vastness of his grace. God’s power, glory, and grace is re-vitalized in our Communion as we encounter Jesus Christ afresh. As for Zacchaeus, so for us, past and present are linked together through the physical elements of bread and wine, which point us to the historic person and event by which our salvation was ac-complished. These then serve as the vehicle through which we realize anew God’s presence and power, for they point us to the living Christ, who is active in our lives and as well as in all history. Let us, therefore, come to his table in expectancy and hope. He will be present.
In the words of that magnificent Isaac Watts Hymn — “When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died, see from his head, his hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down. Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.”
At Central Baptist Church, the first Sunday of each month is communion Sunday. Without exception, all are welcome to partake of the bread and wine, the symbols of the body and blood of Christ. Plan to be with us each month. It is there that you will meet Jesus Christ.

Joe and Carol Potter
All of us acknowledge 9/11 as a deeply significant day. For Carol and Joe Potter that date is personal and full of unexpected adventure because September 11, 1954 was their wedding day and the very day of Hurricane Edna. Carol recalls using seven raincoats to protect her from the torrent; she also recalls the loss of the organ when the power went out at Our Lady of Victory Church. She smiles as she tells it now. And, amazingly, on the actual 9/11/01 Joe was aboard a direct flight from Korea to New York City scheduled to land at 10:00 AM. He had taken his grandson Jake to a reunion of Rhode Island veterans of the Korean War. Their plane was diverted to Minneapolis and Joe and Jake made their way home via a rented van to celebrate the 46th anniversary with Carol. The Potters had met as teenagers at the Rollerdrome which was located near the present site of Staples.
Carol is the daughter of Robert and Lillabelle Wilcox. Her ancestor Jonathan Nash was the first resident of the Watch Hill lighthouse. Her education came from Westerly schools. She worked at the Cottrell Company when they first made use of automated office machines; Carol learned to operate all the IBM machinery. She stopped working to be at home with their children and later resumed working at Davis Standard, Kay Dee, and New England Security. She and Joe have two daughters, Cindy (our beloved church administrator) and Sherri, an RN who works at Avalon in Mystic. The three grandchildren are Larissa Capizzano of Tucson, Jake Grube of Tucson, and Paul Grube of Wester-ly.
Joe was born and reared in Westerly, son of Joseph and Lucy Gallucci Potter. Determined to go into the military, Joe dropped out of Westerly High at sixteen, had eighteen months' training at Valley Forge Army Hospital and worked as a surgical tech and eventually as a psychiatric technician in a medical unit in Korea. He liked the work because he could see that he'd accomplished something every day. He left the service for marriage. At that point in her life, Carol was "not into travel". His plan was to be a draftsman, so he got his diploma equivalency and a certificate in Drafting 101 from URI. He served an apprenticeship at Cottrell's (which consisted of 7600 hours in 1958) and was laid off in a downturn. Bob Holland suggested an entry level job at Washington Trust where he did mailroom work and gophering. A month later he was offered his job again at Cottrell's. He chose to stay at the bank, went to night school, and began a succession of promotions that led to the position of Executive Vice-President from which he retired. Joe enjoyed the aspect of banking that helped local people get ahead in life.
The Potters have been "on the road" ever since retirement. They have been to forty-eight states and seven conti-nents. Carol was introduced to travel by going with Joe to bank planning conferences in places like the Virgin Islands. She is now so comfortable a traveler that she is about to go by herself to meet Jake to attend a hot air balloon fiesta in Albuquerque. They've visited Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Israel and most places in-between. They have not been to Normandy, but there are plans.
To say that the Potters have community interests is like saying that Bach was an organist. Joe is known for his lead-ership role in the Columbus Day Parade - ever since the mid-60's when there was a short parade with one band. In 1992, the 500th anniversary of Columbus, the parade expanded with the help of sponsors into a 12 division parade with over 2500 people involved. It is a year-round effort which Joe can still plan from his six-month home in Tucson. Joe is a sixty year member of the VFW, member of the Rotary International, a "news junkie", and a sports fan.
Carol's interests, besides family and travel, relate mostly to history. She researches genealogy, belongs to DAR, is on the Memorial Committee at Central Baptist, and helped create and manage the Joshua Store at the Babcock Smith House. Both she and Joe are docents there, mostly inactive due to their travels. She has made crafts for the store. In the Green Valley Community Church in Arizona, she is part of a shawl ministry in their women's society.
The Potter's home on Breach Drive is situated so that every room has a superb view of either the breachway or the salt pond (sometimes both). Since the house is high, it is possible to see Block Island. The Potters must have a strong work ethic not to spend all their time looking out the windows. It is that remarkable a site. Inside the home I saw a couple with a 59 year marriage, a fine family, a history of hard work and success, and a sustained effort to im-prove the larger community. The inside view is also remarkable.

Question: How do we know God is answering our prayers?
Response: We know that God is answering our prayers because He said in the Bible that He
would. Of course, not all of His answers are yes. Sometimes God answers no; and sometimes He wants us to wait. The an-
swer we receive is not always the one we had in mind, but it is always best.
Answer see Proverbs 15:1 NIV

The Wisdom of Age When the professor had spoken we stood for a moment silent, then he smiled and said briskly:
“I have been a botanist for fifty-four years. When I was a boy, I believed implicitly in God. I prayed to him, having a vision of him —a person— before my eyes. As I grew older, I concluded there was no God. I dis-missed him from the universe. I be-lieved only in what I could see, hear, or feel. I talked about Nature and Reality.”
He paused, the smile still lighting his face, evidently recalling the old days. I did not interrupt him. Finally he turned to me and said abruptly: “And now, it seems to me, there is nothing but God.”

THANK YOU

Thank you for all the prayers you have said for the Plante Family in the past few months. It gave me peace of mind knowing my church family was praying for us. The response reminds me of 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18: "(v16) Be joyful always; (v17) pray con-tinually, (v18) give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." God bless, Deb Plante

Hi Pastor Lord, I just want to send a note of thanks for the wonderful time of fellowship we enjoyed with ABW of Rhode Island at Central Baptist Church. At the end of that day, I received an envelope con-taining the "lunch" money because, I was told, Cen-tral Baptist Church generously offered to pay for the luncheon. Because the amount totaled $115 - that will become an additional "health center kit" so that another nurse can do a better job for the patients who depend on him/her. Thank you so much, and please pass this thank you along as appropriate. With appreciation, Katherine Niles
