PasTor Cal’s Corner Dear Friends, I hope your summer is going well. For me, it is a little less frantic. I use the time to reflect on where I've been and to plan where I am going. As you read this I will be somewhere on my trip across America. My daughter, Sarah, is starting a new adventure in Seattle Washington. She is a lot braver than me. Then again, I look forward to September. That's when we start a brand new season together. If you are away, I hope you will come back on September 8th renewed and ready to grow and serve the Lord. Here is something to think about as you enjoy the lazy days of August. I was watching a rerun of the old television show, Heroes, the other night. The series tells the stories of ordinary people who have superhuman abilities, and explores how these abilities affect the characters' lives. In this particular episode one of the characters was on trial for abusing his power. He was accused of going back in time to save the life of someone he cared for a great deal. I couldn't help but think how many times I wished I could do something like that. Imagine being able to go back in time and right some wrong. If I could prevent someone I loved from making a terrible mistake, I would gladly sacrifice all that I own. Most of us would. Unfortunately, as my father always said, "it only works that way on television." He was right. Real life is a one way street. We can only pick up the pieces and move forward. What if we could do something, would we? Confronted by his accusers, the Hero declares that if it is wrong to want to save the life of someone who makes this world a better place, then they can find him guilty. He did it and he would do it again. Just then an image came to mind. I saw Jesus on the cross. The apostle Paul says, "Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare die. But God shows his love for us in this: While we were yet sinners, Christ came to die for us." You see God broke the rules when he sent Christ to die on the cross. According to the law we were condemned to die for our sins, separated from God for all eternity. Paul says "all have sinned, all have fallen short of his glory." Yet, God did not leave it there. He so loved the world that he sent his only son... so that the world might be saved. Now that is a hero! The truth is that God loves you and me so much that he was willing to sacrifice everything to save us. I don't know about you, but I want the whole world to know who my hero is. The best way to tell the world is not with our lips. Talk is cheap. The best way to do it is with our lives. Here's the truth. Jesus died not because we were so good, but like the Hero on television, he saw in us the potential to do something great. When we lead lives that honor God and reflect his glory, we make this world a better place. Let's honor God and let our love, compassion, faithful living and search for justice lead the way so that in us, the world will catch a glimpse of our Hero. God bless. See you in church. Cal

For your convenience, here are a couple easy giving options. You can add CBC’s address (16 Elm St Westerly RI 02891) to your bank’s Bill Payment site and schedule the bank to print and mail your check to the church. Or, for online giving, visit cbcwesterly.org/donations or scan this code on your phone to access CBC’s online giving app. You can give either directly from your bank account or use a debit/credit card. The app uses the same security as bank web sites, so your personal information is secure. Also, it allows you to schedule your donations in advance, so ‘once and it’s done’! Please take a look and see how online giving can make giving easier for you!

The conversion from oil to gas has essentially been completed. Arrangements to have the oil tank removed have also been completed. At this point I want to make specific mention of our lead trustee on this project. Jim Collins has been deeply involved from securing and reviewing proposals for this project to its completion. This included numerous hours reviewing the contracts with National Grid, Industrial Burner Services and with the tank removal firm as well as coordinating all aspects of their work. Ron & Ellen Rodehorst researched the available material to determine the value to us in making the changes. The Trustees in general reviewed the proposals and the pros and cons in making the change resulting in the recommendations to move ahead. All in all your fellow members on the Trustees and others worked hard to improve the church building to benefit us now and in the future. Very truly yours,

Frederick C. Eckel, Jr., Chair

Although income didn’t reach the planned amount in June, expenses were also lower than planned, resulting in a positive income for the month. At the mid-point of the year, the net deficit is small, only 4% of our income, and $7,500 less than the planned deficit for January to June. We appreciate your continuing generous support of CBC’s ministries during the summer season. Thank you!

We are in need of Sunday School teachers this fall. Curriculum is provided. Teachers rotate on a flexible schedule with a teacher team of three. You choose the age group. There are no classes in the summer. A great way to get to know all the wonderful families at Central Baptist. So if you would like to share the word of God and have fun too, please see a member of the Board of Christian Education for more information! Thank you, Marie

You and I don’t really own anything. We are guests here on God’s earth. As the writer of Psalm 24 put it: “The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it.” (Psalm 24:1) We are here on God’s property and using God’s minerals, plants, animals, and land as though they belonged exclusively to us. Have you ever considered that fact?

When we do consider the gifts God has given to us, most of us surely will be prompted to be grateful for such immeasurable generosity. Every day should be Thanksgiving Day. Don’t you agree? Beyond being appreciative of this marvelous and beautiful earth where we live “rent free,” people should consider what they can do to respond to God’s love. They surely will conclude that they should strive to become good stewards of all that they have been given: the earth, their bodies, minds, and spirits. Also their families, their churches, their work, their possessions… whatever God has given to them.

In 1873, The English composer Frances R. Havergal wrote a hymn that summarizes the intent of a truly dedicated steward: Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee.

Take my moments and my days and let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of thy love.

Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee.

CBC has received a letter from Nancy Balentine’s son, Peter, Pastor of the Hope Community Church in Newburyport, MA, thanking us for our prayers and financial support that we provided for the Tanzania Pastor Training of 33 pastors that he led in Moshi, Tanzania this past June 24th to 28th. This year was his third year of teaching. The Mission Board donated funds to purchase ten of the much needed Africa Study Bibles. Pete is thankful that he can use his education to contribute to the thriving church in Africa. He also states that they have much to teach him (this year it was about the reality of spiritual warfare and how we are clueless in the West about it). Pete’s letter and photos are posted on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall.

On Sunday, August 4th, Steve and Suzanne Buchele will be visiting and speaking during our morning service. You will recall that Suzanne is the daughter of our loved and missed Nelda Nardone. The Buchele’s have been searching for a new assignment after leaving their posts in Africa and have been traveling to see what opportunities God was leading them to. Colorado Springs and a post in Jordan in the Middle East seemed possible but soon the doors were closed. Another of their possibilities was Hanoi, Vietnam and they accepted the call to Hanoi joining the staff of Hanoi International Fellowship.

They have learned that Vietnam appears to be opening the doors to discussions on faith. While Christian foreign missionaries are still not allowed to proselytize or perform religious activities without government approval, that approval has been given to HIF to collaborate with local churches and the local government to bless Hanoi and their nation. About 70% of Vietnamese express no faith, so Steve and Suzanne’s work there will be more by example than outright evangelism. Come and meet with Steve and Suzanne on Sunday, August 4th.

Their latest email, “Prayer Matters”, is on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall. We thank you for your continued prayers for all missionaries and their families as they serve God in this perilous world. Jean Smith

New Additions to the Library Reference Prayers and Promises of the Bible (Smart Guide Series) - J.H. Rogers & Larry Richards The book is divided into two sections: Prayers and Promises. Prayers dealing with our utterances to God and God’s utterances to us in the form of His Promises to us. The section on Prayer is a guide to effective prayer, featuring those who prayed in the Old and New Testaments. The Promise part of the book encourages the reader by identifying the promises God has in store for those who come to Him in prayer. Christian Living Goliath Must Fall - Louie Giglio Set against the Biblical account of David and Goliath, the author addresses several potential “insurmountable challenges” that can upset one’s life. The author contends that these “giants” have already been defeated by what Christ has done and that the individual needs to accept the Lord’s invitation to lean on Him and experience new life. Inspirational Unshakable Hope - Max Lucado Because life is filled with problems, God’s Word is filled with promises. In Unshakable Hope, Max Lucado unpacks a dozen of the Bible’s most significant promises, equipping us to overcome difficult circumstances, experience lasting security, and make wise decisions. Who are the Needleworkers? What do they do?

The Needleworkers are a group of women from the church who meet twice a month at Nancy Balentine’s home. We work on individual projects of our own choosing. Most of the time these projects include a needle of some sort such as knitting needles, crochet needles, sewing needles, or any sort of needle. Sometimes the projects we produce are for our individual needs or gifts.

Throughout the year we create many items for the church’s Holiday Bazaar such as hats, mittens, sweaters, and a variety of more “needle-worked” items. In addition to our items for the Bazaar, we have donated many items for Operation Christmas Child and mailed a dozen of our sweaters to Kinit-

for-Kids at World Vision.

If you have any interest in attending our twice a month meetings, we would love to have you. If you don’t know how to knit or crochet and have a desire to learn, we can help you. We meet the first and second Mondays of the month from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM.

If you have any questions about Needleworkers, speak to Nancy Balentine or Dot Marra.

Prayer Garden - A Garden of Grace Matthew 14:23–“After he had dismissed the crowd, he went up in the hills to pray.” (RSV)

In a previous newsletter I used Father Paul Scalia’s essay “Four Gardens” from his book of essays “That Nothing May Be Lost” as a reference because Central Baptist is now in the early stages of planning for a prayer garden. I want to once again use the “Four Gardens” essay as a reference, but this is from a different perspective.

Four Gardens

“Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark” (Jn 20:1; cf. Mt 28:1; Mk 16:1-2; Lk 24:1). She comes to the garden. We know from the last words of the Passion read on Good Friday that the tomb of our Lord was in a garden (Jn 19:41). This is not an unimportant detail, because salvation history can be understood as a story of gardens.

We find three essential elements in a garden: order, beauty, and life. Order sets a garden apart from the wilderness. Its boundaries and design establish it as a specific place unlike any other. Second, a garden has beauty—a diversity of flowers and plants, colors, sizes, and shapes that pleases the eye. Finally, a garden has life. Plants grow and bear fruit, and animals find their territory a pleasing place to live.

This is what God desired for us in that first garden, the Garden of Eden: order, beauty, and life. Order, not just of the Garden, but of our own lives. He established us in a harmonious (well-ordered) relationship with Him, which bestowed in turn a harmony within ourselves and with others, the integration of soul and body, man and woman, man and creation. Likewise the beauty of that first Garden was not of the plants and flowers but of our souls, the surpassing beauty of the only creature created in His image and likeness. And he bestowed life there as well—the unending life of God.

By his sin Adam rejected the Gardener and lost the goods of the Garden. We have lost order, beauty, and life. Rebellion against God has thrown His creation into disarray. We now find soul pitted against body, man against woman, and all of creation at odds with man. It has brought the ugliness and horror of sin into the world. Most of all, it has brought death into the world, death in place of life.

In a second garden our Lord began the restoration, the redemption; Jesus went “where there is a garden, which he and his disciples entered” (Jn 18:1; cf. Mt 26:30; Mk 14:26; Lk 22:39). He entered the Garden of Gethsemane to undo the rebellion of the Garden of Eden. In that garden he took upon himself all the disorder, ugliness, and death that sin brought into the world. The entirety of it rushed upon and into Him. “And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down upon the ground” (Lk 22:44). He Who is Beauty Itself became the Man of sorrows. He “who knew no sin” became sin for us (2 Cor 5:21). Life itself became death.

In the third garden our Lord continues His work—by rising from the dead. How fitting that His tomb should be in a garden—to complete the restoration of God’s original plan. Indeed, when she first sees Him, Mary Magdalene takes our Lord to be the gardener (Jn 20:15). And in a certain sense, He is. He rises as the divine Gardener, to restore order, beauty, and life.

He completes His work in a fourth garden: the human soul. He desires to enter our souls by His grace and dwell within as divine Gardener. He desires to reestablish within us His gifts of order, beauty, and life intended from the beginning—order, to heal that division and discord within us that produces all the division and discord outside of us; beauty, to rid us of the ugliness of sin and grant us the glory of His children; and life, that our hearts become lively and life-giving.

On Easter Day Mary Magdalene found Him in a garden. He rose in a garden so that we can in turn find Him within us, establishing His new garden of grace.

Passersby who are experiencing turmoil or loss in their lives, through prayer at a Central Baptist Church prayer garden, may be able to find once again a harmonious relationship with God. They may be able to fill their lives again with a sense of order, beauty, and life itself. At Gethsemane, restoration and redemption is described when Jesus takes upon Himself, at the crucifixion, the sins of the world. Through prayer in a prayer garden, a resurrection of the human soul can take place, allowing Jesus, through God’s grace to enter our souls to dwell within us, bringing a new sense of peace and contentment to those in need of prayer. Father Scalia closes his essay with a name that could well be the name of a Central Baptist prayer garden—“His Garden of Grace”—what a beautiful garden that would be. John Macomber

SMILES AND SO FORTH Humor, Wisdom, Poetry, Quizzes, and So Forth By Dorothy Marra

Answer: Proverbs 15:1 NIV

Only A Sparrow

I’m glad it was only a sparrow That Jesus made note of that day

When he told us to trust in his Father And wanted to show us the way

Men sold them at two for a farthing, But still - and thank God this is true -

He’s the same one who “careth for you.”

I’m glad that he spoke of the sparrow Which stays with us all the year long,

Daily teaching the lesson of trusting, Though humble its dress and its song;

For birds gay of song and of plumage Are more like the wealthy and wise,

While the plain folk seem much like the sparrows Which men overlook or despise.

The little brown sparrow so humble, The poor who are with us always,

I’m so glad they’re the ones Jesus spoke of To teach us to trust him that day.

Esther Kaldahl Guyot

THREE GOOD REASONS TO SERVE YOUR CHURCH

Before you say no when asked to take a job in your church, think about some reasons why you should say yes. There are at least three good reasons why every Christian ought to serve the church: 1. Your Christian life needs a service outlet. Nothing helps

you to grow as a Christian like putting your faith into prac-tice by teaching, singing, ushering, or serving on a church committee.

2. You have a testimony to share with others. The reason why you are asked to serve is that your fellow Christians have confidence in you and your ability. Your Christian testimony will be a good influence in the lives of those whom you lead and serve. 3. Your church needs you. There is no way for a church to get its work done unless members volunteer their time to teach and lead. When you accept a place of responsibility, You help your church move forward in the name of Christ.
