Comcast-Spectacor

I have a secret that many people in the public assembly facility industry would find not only interesting, but also beneficial. My company,

Comcast-Spectacor, knows my secret because we’ve been capitalizing on its benefits and broad applications. And, in my opinion, it’s only going to get better.

Here’s the secret – let me whisper it into your ear – technology has become a revenue generator. Did you hear me? For years, this simple fact may have been discussed, but, for whatever reason, no one paid it much attention. That’s not the case any more.

Let me explain.

Unlike many companies that focus their attention on sports, entertainment, and facility management, Comcast-Spectacor is light years ahead in the utilization of eCommerce and technology. Having worked at a league headquarters in New York City, I can assure you that competency is sporadic for professional teams when it comes to technology usage and resources.

Comcast-Spectacor has some significant advantages to allow the company to accelerate efforts into revenue generation through technology. One, is that our parent company, Comcast, operates on the cutting edge of technology. Another is that Comcast-Spectacor owns numerous diverse entities in sports, entertainment, and management, which provides expertise and input in various niches across the vertical industry chain.

I am proud to say that we make good business decisions that make good sense for the company. In order for Comcast-Spectacor to allocate resources toward technology, there has to be a positive ROI. In simple terms, it needs to move the needle on our businesses. And I’m not speaking of implicit measures; I’m speaking of explicit, tangible, revenue generation. Let’s look at examples of how technology is used across the Comcast-Spectacor universe to help ensure that we’re a consistent world-class organization in all of our businesses.

The first thing I believe as a differentiator is that we have a separate department for sales and marketing technologies (profit centers). This allows us better integration with the business and quicker reaction time by aligning technology initiatives with sales and marketing. That usually means CRM, marketing automation, and focused interactive marketing.

Another differentiator is knowledge sharing. Because our businesses cut across related

industries, we not only have a good knowledge base and formal knowledge sharing touch points, but some of our businesses have an advantage by being able to leverage resources and systems that they would not be able to otherwise obtain.

For example, our CRM system, Salesforce.com, allows us to leverage our purchasing power and internal experts to our other businesses at a significant discount. In the area of marketing automation, we have experts in our company who live it daily. I truly believe that we have a healthy understanding of the relationship between our current customers and future customers. In order to sustain a successful business, we need to retain customers, and generate/nurture future customers. The technology that we utilize helps us achieve that goal. Just as a sales person who upon meeting a prospect in person can detect their body language, we have technology that detects digital body language. We help ensure that sales people and marketers are as efficient as possible by utilizing web tracking in order to read their digital body language. We have decreased sales cycles and increased conversion rates. Increasing the prospect database, as well as nurturing them, ensures that technology is a game changer.

There is the business side to applying technology that is equally important. I’m proud to say that the principles of the core Comcast-Spectacor business apply here, as well. We take a pragmatic approach to technology. Just because all the “cool guys” are doing it is not enough reason to adapt it. Of course, we do dip our feet into the pool, but again, we’re a business, so the allocation of resources to the technology needs to make business sense.

Social media, interactive media buys, and viral web sites are some examples where technology and business ROI are constantly evaluated. Those initiatives that are not effective are dropped, while those that make a difference are fostered and shared.

Now you know my secret. At Comcast-Spectacor, technology has become a revenue generator. We’re able to leverage, resource, evaluate, foster, share, and report across all of our properties the technologies that make a difference in our businesses. I believe that with our professional sports teams (Flyers, 76ers) we’re at the leading edge of sales and marketing technologies, but to be able to leverage it across our other businesses, from Paciolan to New Era Ticketing to Global Spectrum, gives us an edge.

The Singapore Sports Hub Consortium, a group of several international companies that includes Global

Spectrum, was thrilled when, after more than two years, a contract was signed to pave the way for the construction of the $1.33 billion Singapore Sports Hub in Singapore. As part of the public-private partnership, Global Spectrum and PICO, their partners in Asia, will manage the facilities in the multi-purpose sports and entertainment complex.

The Singapore Sports Council estimated an April 2014 opening for the new stadium, which will cater to both sports and non-sport events. The centerpiece of the project is the 55,000-seat stadium with a retractable roof, with other highlights including a 6,000-seat indoor aquatic center, a 41,000-sq. ft. commercial space, a beach volleyball court, a rock climbing wall, a sports library, a sports museum, and restaurants.

“This was a long process, but it was well worth the wait,” said Mich Sauers, Comcast-Spectacor Senior Vice President of Business Development.

The new stadium will feature a cooling system that will keep fans in the individual seats comfortable. The 20,000 seats closest to the bottom of the arena can also be brought forward over the running track right up to the edge of the field during soccer matches, to bring fans closer to the action. The movable tier seating system can also be configured for cricket and rugby matches in the stadium.

Global Spectrum’s connection to the Sports Hub could mean NBA basketball or NHL hockey could be on display in Singapore in the future.

“We’re keen on exploring an exhibition game for the 76ers, either with a local side or another NBA team,” John Page, Global Spectrum’s COO said. “Bringing them to Singapore is also an option, and our relationships with the NBA and NHL will be of help. We’re also looking

at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, and we’d like to explore a World Wrestling Entertainment event there, as well.”

The consortium tasked to design, build, finance, and operate the hub is led by engineering and construction firm Dragages Singapore, and includes designers Arup Sport and DP Architects, and events company World Sport Group.

Global Spectrum will work with World Sport Group to ensure a year-round calendar of events for the hub that will appeal to sports and non-sports enthusiasts.

”We want to make sports entertainment part of the everyday sports culture. Whether it’s family shows, music concerts, or a big monster truck event, we want to bring whatever makes sense in Singapore,” Page added.

Paciolan and StubHub agreed to a multi-year partnership to integrate Paciolan’s

powerful ticketing solution into the StubHub ticket resale platform. With this partnership, college athletics programs using Paciolan’s ticketing software can opt in to the program and electronically integrate with StubHub. Electronic integration enables tickets to be purchased and then emailed instantly to buyers using the school’s print-at-home

delivery. Sellers are able to list their tickets seamlessly through the university athletics website without the worry of having to ship or FedEx the tickets after the sale.

Florida State University and Purdue University, two of Paciolan’s existing 98 college athletics partners, will be the

first programs to leverage the StubHub and Paciolan combined offering for the current NCAA college football season. Additional schools will be coming on board in time for basketball season.

The partnership strengthens Paciolan’s current ticket resale platform by offering a new option for teams to choose an “open market” resale model with StubHub providing access to millions of consumers.

“We are thrilled to partner with StubHub to offer an innovative ticket resale option to college athletics organizations and their season ticket holders,” said Dave Butler, Chief Executive Officer of Paciolan. “The StubHub integration also offers athletics programs greater

reach to attract new buyers to purchase premium tickets, fill empty seats, and increase game-day revenues.”

The partnership also provides schools with the ability to build a database of new prospects tied to the secondary market. Season-ticket holder retention is another added benefit for participating universities. Through the partnership, they gain

the additional confidence to renew for the following season knowing that there is a convenient, university-supported method to resell their unused tickets.

FanOne Marketing Drives Nets Season Ticket Holder Renewals FanOne Marketing developed and deployed a highly targeted email and personalized URL (PURL) campaign for New Jersey Nets Basketball in an effort to increase their season ticket holder renewals.

The campaign was highly successful, resulting with a 51 percent open rate, an eight percent increase in renewals from last year, and a 52:1 ROI. As a result of this campaign, Nets Basketball inked an 18-month deal with FanOne Marketing for full-service database marketing technology and strategic consulting.

As the Nets prepare for the 2010–11 NBA season, their first at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ,

they now have plenty of new content to incorporate into their marketing and renewal process.

Fargodome Picks New Era As New Ticketing CompanyThe Fargodome Authority, the municipal authority that oversees the Global Spectrum-managed Fargodome in Fargo, ND, has opted to sign New Era Tickets as its new ticketing company for events at the 26,000-seat venue.

Under the terms of the new agreement, the

Fargodome stands to increase its revenue. The facility relies on commission for such charges as a source of revenue, but the New Era proposal allows the dome to

set the fees, according to Rob Sobolik, General Manager of the Fargodome.

Ovations LEEDing By Example At Portland’s Rose Garden ArenaOvations Food Services has helped the Portland Trail Blazers earn LEED Gold status for the team’s sustainability efforts at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, OR.

Ovations earned recognition by having a sustainable purchasing policy, using almost exclusively compostable disposables, sourcing almost 40 percent of food and beverage locally, purchasing ENERGY STAR appliances and electronics, using environmentally safe cleaners, and diverting almost 70 percent of waste to recycling, composting, and biodiesel.

Each member of the Ovations’ team at the Rose Garden Arena plays a part in making it a sustainably operated facility, and without these efforts achievements like attaining a LEED Gold certification would not be possible.

NCAA Wrestling Finals At Two Global Spectrum Venues in 2011, 2013

The NCAA announced it will hold its prestigious Wrestling Championships in 2011 and 2013 at two Global Spectrum-managed arenas – the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA, respectively.

Polk County officials in Iowa are extremely excited about the recent awarding by the NCAA because Iowa has been a hotbed of scholastic wrestling competition – from grade schools to universities – for many years.

It will be the first time in 10 years that the NCAA Championship will be returning to Iowa.

Jamie Pollard, Iowa State University Athletic Director, said the NCAA’s selection of Des Moines and the Wells Fargo Arena represents a major accomplishment for the area. It will be the eighth

time that Iowa State has hosted the national event.

“Iowa State wrestling fans, our Cyclone wrestling student-athletes, and fans of the sport throughout our state are the biggest winners in the successful bid,” he said.

Matt Homan, Global Spectrum Regional Vice President and General Manager of the Wells Fargo Arena, said the NCAA wrestling event will be exciting and will generate a significant economic benefit for the Des Moines area.

“This is a major championship event that we are getting. We are honored with the NCAA’s decision and appreciate all of the work our partners have done to make this a reality,” he said.

Global Spectrum, UNICEF Partnership Goes On-LineThe first ever partnership between UNICEF and an organization to raise funds not in direct response to an emergency, began between the United Nation’s organization and Global Spectrum as the Global Spectrum employee page now appears on the Internet. The website for company employees to donate is www.unicefusa.org/global.

Mary Ann Saleski, Senior Vice President, Comcast-Spectacor Foundation, created the initiative for this pilot project, along with the Global Spectrum Charities Committees .

“We urge all Global Spectrum employees to visit the website and be generous in making a donation to UNICEF,” Saleski said. “A gift made before an emergency occurs means

that UNICEF can direct resources to where the need is greatest, and work proactively to lessen the impact of future disasters on the world’s children.”

Jennifer Carpenter, U.S. Fund for UNICEF, congratulated Saleski and the Comcast-Spectacor Foundation for initiating the new program.

“You have our sincere thanks for your role in bringing together our two organizations for the benefit of the world’s children. We are grateful to Global Spectrum for the compassion and generosity of its employees, and we are inspired by the good we can do together,” said Carpenter.

Global Spectrum Flagship Now Wells Fargo CenterThe Wachovia Center, flagship arena of Global Spectrum, has changed its name to reflect the bank’s name change. The 21,000-seat Wachovia Center in Philadelphia has changed its name to the Wells Fargo Center.

The Wells Fargo Center is one of the premier entertainment and sports venues in the country, home of the NHL’s Eastern Conference Champion Philadelphia Flyers, as well as the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers.

Global Spectrum also manages the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, which is part of the Iowa Events Center complex.

“As the owner and operator of the arena, Comcast-Spectacor is honoring the contract as it was agreed upon with the bank that the successor shall keep the naming rights of the facility,” said Peter Luukko, President of Comcast-Spectacor and Chairman of Global Spectrum.

Global Spectrum Courts Fulfill Tournament’s NeedsFour basketball courts from as many Global Spectrum-managed venues provided the stage for one massive tournament in Springfield, MA, the Mecca city of basketball, for the Annual AAU Basketball Tournament at the MassMutual Center.

The three-week event attracted young people, parents, and coaches from all over the world to Springfield. It also brought in NCAA Division I, II, and III coaches and scouts.

To host the event, the MassMutual Center needed four basketball courts to accommodate the number of teams playing in the tournament. An alert went out to other Global Spectrum buildings for basketball courts in order to supplement the MassMutual’s single court. MassMutual Center was able to secure courts from the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, NJ, Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, NY, and the Mullins Center in Amherst, MA.

This is truly a perfect example of Global Spectrum facilities working together – all for one, one for all.

Matt Homan (left), General Manager of the Iowa Events Center, Des Moines, IA, presents Polk County Board of Supervisors with check for $536,563 that repre-sents Iowa Events Center’s profit for fiscal year 2009-10.

Polk County (IA) Supervisors Chairman, Contract Administrator for the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, IA

When I first took office on the Polk County Board of Supervisors, the decision already had been made to build Wells Fargo Arena and Hy-Vee Hall, which along with Veterans Memorial Auditorium and the Polk County Convention Complex make up the Iowa Events Center. The responsibility for the board at that time was to make sure the facilities ran as efficiently as possible with the least drain on county taxpayers.

I’ll be the first to admit that I was very concerned that we would be looking at fairly large operational subsidies for many years. After all, the annual subsidy for only Veterans Memorial Auditorium and the Polk County Convention Complex tradi-tionally had been in excess of $800,000.

After researching experiences of similar facilities across the country, it became evident that we needed a professional management firm for our buildings. Following initial negotia-tion with three companies, one rose to the top.

Global Spectrum was our selection. Since engaging the com-pany to operate/manage the Iowa Events Center facilities, Polk County has not had to provide any subsidy for the entire complex.

This is unheard of in the convention/arena industry. Polk County received a profit of

$84,355 in 2007, $355,180 in 2008 and $77,114 in 2009.

On July 21, Global Spectrum notified Polk County that we will receive a profit of $536,563 this year. This is the largest profit since the Iowa Events Center began operations in 2005 and brings full circle the impact the Iowa Events Center has made on our community.

The success of the Iowa Events Center reaches beyond down-town Des Moines.

It has provided additional economic impact on our county by bringing money to area restaurants and hotels. Convention and exhibit events such as the AQS National Quilt Show & Expo, 2010 National Pheasant Fest, 26th annual Golden Age Games, Iowa’s Premier Wine and Food Expo, and Gold Wing bring people from throughout the country to see what Polk County has to offer. With great concerts, Wells Fargo Arena will continue to be the place to go for a quality concert experience.

It has to be considered a success anytime you can operate public facilities such as these without an annual subsidy. The partnership between Polk County and Global Spectrum really has been a “win-win” for Polk County taxpayers.

Money raised by AHA at these events went toward their mission of building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Knowing that cardiovascular diseases and stroke are the #1 cause of death in the United States, employees at the OPCC supported AHA’s mission, wearing red to work on ‘Wear Red Day’, and making financial contributions. “The AHA was named OPCC’s Charity Recipient of the Year because cardiovascular diseases and stroke affect so many people in our community,” said Global Spectrum’s Brett C. Mitchell, General Manager at the OPCC. “We hope our efforts this year have helped raise awareness and funding for their remarkable organization.”

The Global Spectrum Marketing Conference this year brought over 85 marketers from

Global Spectrum-managed facilities in the United States, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates to Des Moines, IA, in June.

From engaging roundtables designed to motivate the group to generate additional revenue for their facilities to motivational speakers, the participants were able to hone their marketing skills and take new ideas back to their buildings.

Throughout the week, conference-goers were able to see all that Des Moines has to offer, from participating in an Amazing Race-style team exercise downtown, to experiencing some of the popular nightlife spots. Teams in the Amazing Race were challenged to pitch a news story to a local television station.

Other tasks, included proposing new group sales strategies to Wells Fargo Arena tenants, creating ideas to generate revenue for local companies, and pitching a new identity for the city of Des Moines.

The group stayed true to the farm roots of the state by practicing their best hog calling, complete with coaching from a recent Iowa State Fair winner, and participating in pedal tractor races at a rural barn one evening.

Each Global Spectrum marketer left the conference motivated for the coming year with new ideas and tools for their creative toolbox.

The Iowa Events Center thanks Bob Schwartz, Global Spectrum Vice President of Marketing; Peter Luukko, Comcast-Spectacor President and Global Spectrum Chairman; and John Page, Global Spectrum COO, for the opportunity to host these highly provocative meetings.

The University of Phoenix Stadium experienced the wrath of Arizona’s monsoon season (July 29) when a reported microburst storm touched down in Glendale’s Entertainment District. But the show must go on – and it did!

It is estimated that the storm’s winds reached over 75 miles per hour, with driving rain and hail, damaging multiple structures and toppling light poles and trees in the area. Although the stadium sustained some significant damage, including a 1,500-sq. ft. hole in the retractable portion of the roof, the Global Spectrum staff, in conjunction with Hunt Construction, was able to recover the facility in just six days for an event starting on August 4.

Through the combined efforts of stadium personnel, and third party contractors, the Maricopa County Home Show was able to take place as scheduled and attract over 25,000 patrons to the facility.

“The Global Spectrum staff went above and beyond to host a great home show under difficult circumstances. Our company and vendors stood to lose a substantial amount of money, had the show cancelled, and the

show’s ultimate success would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment demonstrated by the Global Spectrum staff,” said Rene Smith, President/Owner of the Maricopa County Home show.

“I am extremely proud of how quickly we were able to address the repairs to the roof and to deliver to our clients and patrons the type of first class experience they expect here. Given the extent of the damage, and timeline we had to work with, it was a remarkable feat to host a major event six days after this extremely powerful weather event,” said Peter C. Sullivan, General Manager and Global Spectrum Regional Vice President at University of Phoenix Stadium.

James Madison University Names Front Row To Manage Athletic Department’s Sponsorships, Media Rights

Philadelphia Soul, Front Row Marketing Services Back In Same Huddle For 2011

In its continuing efforts to enhance the sup-port for student-athletes, James Madison

University (JMU) Athletics in Harrisonburg, VA, has made a move to increase its spon-sorships program through a partnership with Front Row Marketing Servic-es. Front Row will work to increase the exposure and reach of JMU through this new partnership.

“We are excited to have Front Row Marketing Services, one of the country’s leading sponsorship firms, working to secure successful sponsorship and media rights opportunities for JMU,” said Geoff Polglase, Deputy Athlet-ics Director. “Working with Front Row will add resources to the department that will enhance our student-athletes’ and coaches’ efforts on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. Along with those im-provements internally, the partnership will increase the exposure and strengthen the branding of JMU Athletics within the region, state, and nation.”

Front Row Marketing Services will assist JMU in recognizing potential sponsorship opportunities for its en-tire athletics department, including current and future facilities. Success

has been a tradition at JMU, and at the conclusion of the 2009 football season, JMU’s Bridgeforth Stadium began a two-year expansion proj-ect. The expansion calls for an addition of 10,000 seats improving sight lines for all

seats, additional development to the media and press center, and the ad-dition of suites and club level seats. The campaign for Bridgeforth Sta-dium will be completed in the fall of 2011.

“We are excited to be working with James Madison University to contribute to the growing success of JMU Athletics. With the completion of the Bridgeforth Stadium ex-pansion, the exposure and sponsorship suc-cess will only add to the continued eminence

of JMU Athletics,” said Bryan Furey, Regional Vice President for Front Row Marketing Ser-vices. “One of our specialties is mobilizing a local sales force and hitting the ground running, which we have already begun to do in Harrisonburg. We look forward to a long, successful partnership with JMU and its sur-rounding community.”

The Philadelphia Soul and Front Row Marketing Services (FRMS) announced that they are teaming up, once again, to bring back

the Arena Football League Championship Title. With this partnership, Front Row Marketing Services, which handled the sponsorship sales for the Soul from 2004-08, will continue in that capacity as the Soul prepare to return in 2011.

“We are happy to have Front Row Marketing Services back with the team,” said Craig Spencer, Soul co-majority owner. “FRMS was a valuable asset for the Soul in our previous five seasons, and we look forward to continued successes together.”

Consistently placing in the top two in sales in the AFL, FRMS will pick up where they left off selling inventory such as dashboards, turf squares, banners, promotions, naming rights, and team entitlements. FRMS will provide corporate marketing and sales of the commercial rights assets for the ArenaBowl XXII Champions, including sponsorship and signage.

“Front Row Marketing Services has an understanding and passion for our product that we wouldn’t find anywhere else,” said Ron Jaworski,

Soul co-majority owner. “They bring tremendous value to the franchise, and we are exited to have them as part of the Soul family.”

The 2011 regular season runs April through July leading into the playoffs and ArenaBowl in August. The Soul, which returns to play home games at the Wells Fargo Center (formerly the Wachovia Center), capped its previous five seasons with an ArenaBowl XXII Championship in 2008, defeating the San Jose SaberCats, 59-56.

“We are thrilled to reunite with the Philadelphia Soul franchise and their passionate and devoted owners,” said Adrian Staiti, Senior Vice President of Business Operations. “The Philadelphia Soul will kick off their return with success both on and off the field.”

Front Row Heats Up Arizona With Its Annual Meetings in ScottsdaleFront Row Marketing Services held its annual corporate meetings this past July at the W Hotel in Scottsdale, AZ. The meetings were not only an edu-cational sales tool for all the employees, but also a chance to celebrate the tremendous growth of the company and an opportunity to meet the many new faces.

“Through feedback of previous years’ meetings, we were really able to craft and build this trip to maximize our time and results,” said Adrian Staiti, Se-nior Vice President, Business Operations of Front Row Marketing Services. “Each month we all get on our team conference call, and there are always emails between the team, but this provides everyone the opportunity for some face time and an even more direct learning experience. Our sales people are our greatest asset, and this was a way to strengthen that asset through speakers, discussions, and breakout sessions. Additionally, these meetings are to serve as a ‘thank you’ for all of their hard work that results in Front Row’s continued growth and success.”

Also on the agenda were “State of the Union” addresses from Comcast-Spectacor and Global Spectrum. The event wrapped up with an outing to the Global Spectrum-managed University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale where Front Row team members punt, passed, and kicked with football games and activities on the home turf of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals.

Comcast Arena at Everett

Everett, WA

Dear Tammi:

Global Spectrum’s continuous efforts to ‘go green’ at the Comcast

Arena at Everett have played a considerable factor in why I continue

to bring the Everett Fall Home Show back every year. Not only

do your greening initiatives align with the products our vendors

offer, but the energy savings help to keep my overall costs lower.

I primarily work with small business owners in the home improve-

ment and remodeling sector. “Green Products and Services” are some-

thing that they are all very aware of in their own business operations as the

demand has been steadily increasing on the consumer side of the market.

The efforts in this area that are put forth by the

Comcast Arena, have become an important selling point

for me to touch on when soliciting new Vendors.

With the Augusta Entertainment Complex set to announce its 2010-11 Broadway in Augusta series, the marketing department decided that they

were going to publicize the show line-up in a much different manner than in years past.

Rather than sending out a standard press release, a press conference was held at the Bell Auditorium to announce the series, featuring Mannheim Steamroller, Blue Man Group, Grease, and The Color Purple, with a few “special” guests.

Several members of the Augusta Entertainment Complex staff dressed in costumes as “special guests” to represent the upcoming shows. Josh Small, Director of Facilities, played the role of Blue Man. George Aiello, Director of Special Projects, represented Mannheim Steamroller. Emily Dunaway, Marketing Manager, and Mike Cecchini, Group Sales Manager, represented Grease. Arlene McKinnon, Staff Accountant, and Shatara Jones, Administrative Assistant, represented The Color Purple. Monty Jones, Jr., General Manager, spoke to the attending media, who seemed to enjoy the unique way the series was announced.

“Minute To Win It” Hits MassMutual CenterThe MassMutual Center kicked off the summer with an all-employee competition of Minute to Win It. Each department chose a representative to compete in various Minute to Win It games, like Extreme

Hanky Panky, Dizzy Mummy and Rapid Fire. The last one to finish each round was eliminated from the game. In the end, it came down to Sales vs. Operations in a shoot out of Ping Tac Toe. Sales was victorious and walked away with the HYD Trophy.

Dear Allison,

I just wanted to thank you again. The “Curious George Live!” show was

amazing. Everyone on the staff at the Bank United Center was amazing.

It was hot outside waiting for will call, but the manager came out and

opened additional lines. He apologized for the wait, which was extremely

nice and considerate. Very uncommon here in Miami, so it was refreshing.

The group of children that I took LOVED the show and were so happy.

Thank you again, and be assured that we’ll return to any event

Scooters, chairs, walkers, and canes: Every

handicapped person that has to use one of these

devices has one goal in mind — to go places

that a normally healthy person would go. We

just have to use different means to get there.

I met and spoke a few months ago with Curry County Fairgrounds

General Manager Kevin Jolley and Operations Manager Johnny Berry

to discuss how the Fairgrounds could be made safer and easier for

canes, walkers, chairs, and scooters. They didn’t take notes, but they

did listen with great interest and concern.

I am by no means a spokesperson for the handicapped or elderly, but

being handicapped now for 15 years I know from experience what

would help. Safety is our main concern.

Gravel can be our worst enemy. It will shift when pressure is put on

the walker or cane and wheelchairs won’t roll. Jolley and Berry and the

grounds crew removed the gravel from the main walkways by the food

vendors and displays and concessions.

The entrance to the Fairgrounds this year was smooth to get through,

and the benches had been placed under the trees for shade. I was

impressed that it was easy maneuvering for chairs and scooters and safe

for canes and walkers.

Because of financial needs, there is still some work to be done, but I feel

they have come a long way. Thanks to County Manager Lance Pyle,

Jolley, Berry, and their grounds crew. I’m looking forward to next year.

and that the youth had their moment to shine. It is so far the best event we have had in Our Kids’ history. General Manager Patrick McGrew was so involved from the very start. He and his team are owed commendations for their work. I am sure you would agree that these young adults have accomplished an important milestone in their lives. We thank you for helping to make the event a memorable occasion during which the youth could celebrate their accomplishments. We deeply appreciate your contribution to
