Editorial: Ike Richman & Larry Rubin

By Mark DiMaurizioVice President, Technology Solutions

    Comcast-Spectacor

Ihave a secret that many people in the public

assembly facility industry would find not only

interesting, but also beneficial. My company,

    Comcast-Spectacor, knows my secret because

weve been capitalizing on its benefits and

broad applications. And, in my opinion, its only

    going to get better.

Heres the secret let me whisper it into your ear

technology has become a revenue generator.

Did you hear me? For years, this simple fact may

have been discussed, but, for whatever reason,

no one paid it much attention. Thats not the

    case any more.

    Let me explain.

Unlike many companies that focus their

attention on sports, entertainment, and facility

    management, Comcast-Spectacor is light

years ahead in the utilization of eCommerce

and technology. Having worked at a league

headquarters in New York City, I can assure you

that competency is sporadic for professional

teams when it comes to technology usage and

    resources.

    Comcast-Spectacor has some significant

advantages to allow the company to accelerate

    efforts into revenue generation through

technology. One, is that our parent company,

Comcast, operates on the cutting edge of

    technology. Another is that Comcast-Spectacor

owns numerous diverse entities in sports,

    entertainment, and management, which

provides expertise and input in various niches

    across the vertical industry chain.

I am proud to say that we make good business

decisions that make good sense for the

company. In order for Comcast-Spectacor to

allocate resources toward technology, there has

to be a positive ROI. In simple terms, it needs

to move the needle on our businesses. And Im

not speaking of implicit measures; Im speaking

of explicit, tangible, revenue generation. Letslook at examples of how technology is used

across the Comcast-Spectacor universe to help

ensure that were a consistent world-class

organization in all of our businesses.

The first thing I believe as a differentiator

is that we have a separate department for

    sales and marketing technologies (profit

centers). This allows us better integration with

the business and quicker reaction time by

aligning technology initiatives with sales and

marketing. That usually means CRM, marketing

    automation, and focused interactive marketing.

    Another differentiator is knowledge sharing.

Because our businesses cut across related

industries, we not only have a good knowledge

base and formal knowledge sharing touch

points, but some of our businesses have an

advantage by being able to leverage resources

and systems that they would not be able to

    otherwise obtain.

For example, our CRM system, Salesforce.com,

allows us to leverage our purchasing power and

internal experts to our other businesses at a

significant discount. In the area of marketing

automation, we have experts in our company

who live it daily. I truly believe that we have

a healthy understanding of the relationship

between our current customers and futurecustomers. In order to sustain a successful

business, we need to retain customers, and

    generate/nurture future customers. The

technology that we utilize helps us achieve that

goal. Just as a sales person who upon meeting

a prospect in person can detect their body

language, we have technology that detects

digital body language. We help ensure that

sales people and marketers are as efficient

as possible by utilizing web tracking in order

to read their digital body language. We have

decreased sales cycles and increased conversion

rates. Increasing the prospect database, as well

as nurturing them, ensures that technology is a

    game changer.

There is the business side to applying

technology that is equally important. Im proud

to say that the principles of the core Comcast-

Spectacor business apply here, as well. We

take a pragmatic approach to technology. Just

because all the cool guys are doing it is not

enough reason to adapt it. Of course, we do

dip our feet into the pool, but again, were a

business, so the allocation of resources to the

technology needs to make business sense.

Social media, interactive media buys, and viral

web sites are some examples where technology

and business ROI are constantly evaluated.

Those initiatives that are not effective aredropped, while those that make a difference are

    fostered and shared.

Now you know my secret. At Comcast-

Spectacor, technology has become a revenue

generator. Were able to leverage, resource,

evaluate, foster, share, and report across all

of our properties the technologies that make a

difference in our businesses. I believe that with

our professional sports teams (Flyers, 76ers)

were at the leading edge of sales and marketing

technologies, but to be able to leverage it

across our other businesses, from Paciolan to

New Era Ticketing to Global Spectrum, gives us

    an edge.

    New Technology UtilizedAs Revenue Generator

The Singapore Sports Hub Consortium, a group ofseveral international companies that includes GlobalSpectrum, was thrilled when, after more than two years, a

contract was signed to pave the way for the construction

of the $1.33 billion Singapore Sports Hub in Singapore. As

part of the public-private partnership, Global Spectrum and

PICO, their partners in Asia, will m anage the facilities in the

    multi-purpose sports and entertainment complex.

The Singapore Sports Council estimated an April 2014

opening for the new stadium, which will cater to both sports

and non-sport events. The centerpiece of the project is the

55,000-seat stadium with a retractable roof, with other

highlights including a 6,000-seat indoor aquatic center, a

41,000-sq. ft. commercial space, a beach volleyball court,

a rock climbing wall, a sports library, a sports museum,

and restaurants. This was a long process, but it was well worth the wait,

said Mich Sauers, Comcast-Spectacor Senior Vice President

    of Business Development.

The new stadium will feature a cooling system that will

keep fans in the individual seats comfortable. The 20,000 seats

closest to the bottom of t he arena can also be brought forward

over the running track right up to the edge of the field during

soccer matches, to bring fans closer to the action. The movable

tier seating system can also be configured for cricket and rugby

    matches in the stadium.

Global Spectrums connection to the Sports Hub could mean NBA

basketball or NHL hockey could be on display in Singapore in the future.

Were keen on exploring an exhibition game for the 76ers, either

with a local side or another NBA team, John Page, Global Spectrums

COO said. Bringing them to Singapore is also an option, and our

relationships with the NBA and NHL will be of help. Were also looking

at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, and wed like

World Wrestling Entertainment event there, as wel

The consortium tasked to design, build, finance

the hub is led by engineering and construction f

Singapore, and includes designers Arup Sport and

and events company World Sport Group.

Global Spectrum will work with World Sport Group to e

round calendar of events for the hub that will appeal

    non-sports enthusiasts.

We want to make sports entertainment part of the ev

culture. Whether its family shows, music concerts, or

truck event, we want to bring whatever makes sense

Iowa Events Center Marks Record Year

The Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, IA, notcheda record year for profits in fiscal year 2009-10, as489 events contributed to a profit to Polk County for

    $536,563.

This remarkable accomplishment is a result of the diligent work done

on behalf of Global Spectrum to responsibly manage revenues and

expenses throughout the year. While the number of events held at

the IEC was higher than projected, eight percent against budget also

    reduced indirect expenses.

General Manager Matt Homan was pleased to present the Polk County

Board of Supervisors with the great news at a July 21 budget hearing

where a check presentation was made.

Curry County Fair Sets Recordentertainment acts, which eventually produced near sellouts for twoindoor and two outdoor concerts.

Jolley said Global Spectrum was more aggressive in its marketingapproach this year than had been used in previous years. We utilizednewspapers, radio, and television to create awareness and stimulateattendance with potential attendees from Clovis to Albuquerque. Thespots and ads were all done in-house, with Jan Riley, a part-time EventCoordinator, providing a great deal of creative assistance, he said.

Global Spectrum also reached out to area groups and businesses thathadnt been involved in the fair in previous years to involve them incustomer services and exhibition opportunities.

Jolley said the contributions of the Operations Department, Foodand Beverage, Finance and Administrative personnel resulted inone of the smoothest and most efficiently run Clovis County Fair

    operations ever.

our basketball courts from as many Global

    pectrum-managed venues provided the stage

r one massive tournament in Springfield, MA,

e Mecca city of basketball, for the Annual AAU

asketball Tournament at the MassMutual Center.

he three-week event attracted young people,

arents, and coaches from all over the world to

pringfield. It also brought in NCAA Division I, II,

    nd III coaches and scouts.

o host the event, the MassMutual Center needed four basketball courts

accommodate the number of teams playing in the tournament. An

ert went out to other Global Spectr um buildings for basketball courts

order to supplement the MassMutuals single court. MassMutual

enter was able to secure courts from the Sun National Bank Center in

enton, NJ, Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, NY, and the Mullins

    enter in Amherst, MA.

his is truly a perfect example of Global Spectrum facilities working

gether all for one, one for all.

In 2010, the organization held three major

fundraising events at the OPCC, including

their Heart Ball, Go Red for Women Luncheon,

and Festival of Wine & Food. Money raised

by AHA at these events went toward their

mission of building healthier lives, free of

    cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

    Knowing that cardiovascular diseases and

stroke are the #1 cause of death in the United

States, employees at the OPCC supported

AHAs mission, wearing red to work on Wear

The AHA was named OPCCs Charity

diseases and stroke affect so many people in

our community, said Global Spectrums Brett

    C. Mitchell, General Manager at the OPCC. We

hope our efforts this year have helped raise

Other tasks, included proposing new group

sales strategies to Wells Fargo Arena tenants,

creating ideas to generate revenue for local

companies, and pitching a new identity for the

    city of Des Moines.

The group stayed true to the farm roots of

the state by practicing their best hog calling,

UCF Arena Hosts Busy Holiday WeekendA busy Labor Day weekend, which included two sold-out shows, took place at the UCF

Arena on the campus of the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

On Friday (September 3), the UCF Arena was the first arena to ever host DayGlow 3D,

The World Largest Paint Party. The event sold 5,000 tickets, making it the most highly

attended event in the history of DayGlow and a sell out for the UCF Arena. Event goers

danced through the night while being c overed in neon, water-based paint that glowed

under the black lights placed throughout the arena.

On Saturday, the arena operations staff quickly changed over t he

arena for the first ever Game Day Chill Zone. The Chill Zone is an

event created by Global Spectrum staff that allows the UCF Arena

to become a part of the game day atmosphere for UCF home

football games. Global Spectrum staff partnered with local retail

stores and media partners to create and promote the Chill Zone, which features over 10

flat screen TVs and a two-story movie screen broadcasting games throughout college

football; video game setups with all the latest

    games and technology; and concessions

offering the most popular tailgate food and

beverages. The free Chill Zone brought in astrong crowd for the first event and will be

open for all home UCF Football Games.

Another quick changeover after Chill Zone

allowed for the UCF Arena staff to open

doors on Sunday for a sold-out Paramore

show. With guests Kadawatha, New Found

Glory, and Tegan and Sara, Paramore took

the stage in front of a crowd of over 7,800

and brought an exciting end to a very busy

    ustained some significant damage,

cluding a 1,500-sq. ft. hole in the retractable

ortion of the roof, the Global Spectrum staff,

    conjunction with Hunt Construction, was

ble to recover the facility in just six days for

n event starting on August 4.

hrough the combined efforts of stadium

ersonnel, and third party contractors, the

aricopa County Home Show was able to take

ace as scheduled and attract over 25,000

    atrons to the facility.

The Global Spectrum staff went above and

beyond to host a great home show under

    difficult circumstances. Our company and

vendors stood to lose a substantial amount

of money, had the show cancelled, and the

    shows ultimate success would not

have been possible without the hard

work and commitment demonstratedby the Global Spectrum staff, said

    Rene Smith, President/Owner of the

    Maricopa County Home show.

I am extremely proud of how quickly we were

able to address the repairs to the roof and

to deliver to our clients and patrons the type

of first class experience they expect here.

Given the extent of the damage, and timeline

we had to work with, it was a remarkable

feat to host a major event six days after

    this extremely powerful weather event,

said Peter C. Sullivan, General Manager and

Global Spectrum Regional Vice President at

    University of Phoenix Stadium.

Front Row Heats Up Arizona WithIts Annual Meetings in ScottsdaleFront Row Marketing Services held its annual corporate m eetings this past

July at the W Hotel in Scottsdale, AZ. The meetings were not only an edu-

cational sales tool for all the employees, but also a chance to celebrate the

tremendous growth of the company and an opportunity to meet the many

    new faces.

Through feedback of previous years meetings, we were really able to craft

and build this trip to maximize our time and results, said Adrian Staiti, Se-

nior Vice President, Business Operations of Front Row Marketing Services.

Each month we all get on our team conference call, and there are always

emails between the team, but this provides everyone the opportunity for

some face time and an even more direct learning experience. Our sales

people are our greatest asset, and this was a way to strengthen that asset

through speakers, discussions, and breakout sessions. Additionally, these

meetings are to serve as a thank you for all of their hard work that r esults

in Front Rows continued growth and success.

Also on the agenda were State of the Union addresses from Comcast-

Spectacor and Global Spectrum. The event wrapped up with an outing to
