THE GLOBAL PHILADELPHIA ASSOCIATION A joint venture of international stakeholders whose common goal is to radically elevate Philadelphias and their own global presence and effectiveness Swift global integration, the rapid expansion of a global consumer class, and the rise of urban areas as the engines of global economic growth have ushered in a new era that demands more global engagement from Americas city and regional leaders. - The Brookings Institution GPAs Mission Statement To assist and encourage greater interaction among the many organizations and people who are engaged in one form or another of international activity within the Greater Philadelphia Region To promote the development of an international consciousness within the Region To enhance the Regions global profile A Brief History of the GPA 9 organizations operating in the international space and 6 individuals hold monthly meetings to overcome the silo problem GPA is incorporated, creates website; Recruitment of new members underway Organization grows, increases services to members; Zabeth Teelucksingh named as Executive Director; Staff expanded Website develops, becomes Regions international directory and magazine; City and State join as members; idea of holding an international expo is developed Project World Heritage City created with City; OWHC Secretary General visits Philadelphia; Emerging International Journalists Program now regularly publishing news stories and interviews; planning for Global Philly 2015 begins A Brief History, continued Vision of a modern international exposition is realized in 47 day/117 event GlobalPhilly 2013 GPA helps City become an Observer Member of OWHC Represents City at World Congress in Oaxaca First Globally- Minded Leadership Forum GlobalPhilly 2015 showcased 200 events across the region Philadelphia named first World Heritage City in the United States Why Was The Association Created? Philadelphia was underperforming globally despite remarkable assets Place was needed for all of the Regions international stakeholders to make common cause and get connected Laser-like focus on the international dimension would help members (i) to see new opportunities, both for themselves and for cooperation with others, and (ii) to more fully realize their respective missions Why Was The Association Created? continued Branding and publicizing member events would facilitate recognition and audience-building for them Association would be capable of managing projects that no one member could undertake by itself, e.g., international expos, World Heritage City project, etc. The Associations goal in a nutshell: Assisting in the creation of global fluency for Greater Philadelphia Global fluency is the level of global understanding, competence, practice, and reach a metro area exhibits in an increasingly interconnected world economy. This fluency facilitates progress toward a desired economic future.
