I am proud to share the news of KPMG International’s participation in an initiative that has garnered

acclaim and support from around the world: The Global Center for Leadership and Business Ethics.

The Global Center was founded on the belief that leaders are defined by their actions, and those

who exhibit exceptional qualities in business ethics should be recognized and rewarded. To honor

those individuals or institutions embodying such excellence, The Laureate Award and Medal Series

was created, inspired by the structure and selection process of the Nobel Foundation and the

Norwegian Nobel Committee.

KPMG’s participation in The Global Center demonstrates our leadership in restoring credibility to

our profession and trust in the capital markets. Our firm has always believed in “performance with

integrity.” And we will always support those initiatives that recognize the exemplary personal

behavior and responsible business practices that contribute to it.

We are also pleased to announce that in 2004, KPMG International was named The Global Founding

Partner of the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway. The Nobel Peace Center is a forum for public

information and discussion about such significant global issues as war, peace, and conflict resolution.

The Year in Review The Global Center for Leadership and Business Ethics was founded on the principle that

outstanding leaders must do more than guide their businesses in producing economic returns

for their stakeholders. They must also serve as beacons of ethical personal behavior and

responsible business practice. That principle and vision are powerfully expressed through

The Laureate Award and Medal Series, now in its inaugural year.

Inspired by the structure and selection process of the Nobel Foundation and the Norwegian

Nobel Committee, The Global Center is awarding medals this year to individuals for

outstanding achievement in Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility. In addition,

The Laureate Award is being conferred on an individual demonstrating visionary leadership

and an inspirational commitment to the highest ideals of business ethics and integrity.

In addition to The Laureate Award and Medal Series, The Global Center will undertake a

variety of educational activities and initiatives designed to advance responsible business

leadership. Among the ideas being considered is the development of a Business Ethics

curriculum that would include programs, modules, and courses to help students recognize

and manage the ethical issues they may encounter in the course of their careers.

KPMG, the global network of professional services firms, is proud to support The Global

Center. It is a central element of our Global Initiative on Leadership and Business Ethics,

which also encompasses our role—in cooperation with the Norwegian Nobel Committee—

as The Global Founding Partner of the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway. The Peace

Center’s aim is to celebrate the accomplishments of Nobel Peace Prize recipients and to

educate a new generation of leaders committed to public service and ethics.

Through our support of The Global Center and other endeavors, KPMG is leading the effort

to preserve and strengthen public confidence in the capital markets and restore credibility

to the accounting profession. Every one of us—leadership, partners, and employees—looks

forward to being an integral part of this effort in the years to come.

In August 2004 a call for nominations for The Laureate Award and Medal Series was issued

to more than 9,000 individuals and organizations, including senior corporate executives,

audit committee chairs, business school deans, academic leaders, professional associations,

members of Congress, regulatory agencies, and economists.

A sustained strategic media outreach program was initiated to build awareness among all key

constituencies for The Global Initiative on Leadership and Business Ethics as well as The

Laureate Award and Medal Series and other activities of The Global Center. This included

a programmed cycle of news releases and outreach to editors and reporters at international,

national, regional, and industry media outlets to generate news opportunities, resulting in

significant coverage for The Laureate Award and Medal Series. A Web site for The Global

Center for Leadership and Business Ethics (www.theglobalcenter.org) was also created.

Global Center Leadership. In September, William W. George was named chairman of the

board of The Global Center. Mr. George, the former chief executive officer of Medtronic, a

leading medical technology company, possesses exceptional qualifications for the chairman-

ship. In 2001 he was named Executive of the Year by the Academy of Management and

Director of the Year by the National Association of Corporate Directors for 2001–2002.

Mr. George’s best-selling book, Authentic Leadership: Rediscovering the Secrets to Creating

Lasting Value, was published in 2003. He is currently Professor of Management Practice at

Harvard Business School

Soon after Mr. George was named chairman, The Global Center appointed a Board of

Directors comprising a cross section of high-profile individuals from around the world.

These included Dr. Reatha Clark King, former president and board chair, The General Mills

Foundation; Arthur Levitt Jr., former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission chairman;

Lord Simon of Highbury, CBE, former British Petroleum chairman and chief executive;

and Dr. Helmut Sohmen, chairman and president, World-Wide Shipping Group Limited.

A Global Response. By late 2004, The Global Center had received nominations from

more than 15 countries for The Laureate Award and Medal Series. The Center’s Board of

Directors concluded its selections in January.

Global Recognition. In early 2005 the desire to secure the most fitting venue for The

Global Center Awards ceremony led to the selection of the United Nations headquarters in

New York City as the site for the presentation of the inaugural Laureate Award and Medal

Series.

In March the three award recipients were notified. Invitations to the ceremony were sent in

April to a select list of corporate executives and political and Nobel representatives as well

as KPMG partners and leadership.

The 2006 Awards. In July a call for nominations for next year’s Laureate Award and Medal

Series is being issued. The call list has been expanded to include more than 13,000 U.S. and

international contacts.

The Board of Directors William W. George is chairman of the board of The Global Center.

Mr. George is currently Professor of Management Practice at Harvard

Business School, where he teaches leadership and leadership develop-

ment. Previously, he was chief executive officer of Medtronic, Inc.,

a leading medical technology company, from 1991 to 2001, and its

chairman from 1996 until 2002. He serves on the boards of Goldman

Sachs and Novartis AG and is nominated for the board of Exxon

Mobil. Mr. George’s best-selling book, Authentic Leadership: Rediscovering the Secrets

to Creating Lasting Value, was published in 2003.

Dr. Reatha Clark King is the former president and board chair of

The General Mills Foundation. From 1988 to 2002, she served as

president and executive director of The General Mills Foundation

and vice president of General Mills, Inc. Later, Dr. King was

chairperson of the Foundation’s board of trustees. She has lectured

extensively on the subjects of community service, education, and

social issues both in the United States and internationally. Dr. King

also serves on the boards of Exxon Mobil Corp., Wells Fargo & Company, and Department

56, Inc. In 2004, she was named Director of the Year by the National Association of

Corporate Directors.

Arthur Levitt Jr. is the former chairman of the U.S. Securities and

Exchange Commission. First appointed by President Clinton in 1993,

Mr. Levitt became the longest-serving chairman of the Commission

in September 1999. He left the Commission in February 2001, joining

the Carlyle Group where he is now a senior adviser. Before joining

the SEC, Mr. Levitt owned Roll Call, the newspaper that covers

Capitol Hill. From 1989 to 1993 he served as chairman of the New

York City Economic Development Corporation. Earlier, he was chairman of the American

Stock Exchange from 1978 to 1989 and prior to that worked for 16 years on Wall Street.

Lord Simon of Highbury, CBE (David Simon), former chairman

and chief executive of British Petroleum, has served as an adviser to

British Prime Minister Tony Blair and European Union President

Romano Prodi. Lord Simon has served as Minister for Trade and

Competitiveness for Europe at the Department of Trade and Industry

and Her Majesty’s Treasury from 1997 to 1999. He joined British

Petroleum in 1961 and managed company operations in Europe

through the 1970s and 1980s before being named chief executive in 1992 and chairman in

1994. He serves on the boards or advisory committees of Volkswagen, Unilever, Morgan

Stanley (Europe), Suez Group, and Fitch.

Dr. Helmut Sohmen is currently chairman and president of the

Hong Kong–based World-Wide Shipping Group Limited, one of the

world’s largest bulk shipping organizations. The World-Wide Shipping

group of companies owns and operates an extensive tanker and bulk

carrier fleet. Dr. Sohmen joined World-Wide Shipping in 1970 and has

served as chairman and president since 1990. He also serves on the

boards of HSBC Holdings p.l.c. in London and The Hong Kong and

Shanghai Banking Corporation in Hong Kong.

The Laureate Award

John C. Whitehead

Since 2001, John C. Whitehead, former chairman of Goldman, Sachs & Co.,

has chaired the prestigious Lower Manhattan Development Corporation,

charged with restoring lower Manhattan after September 11. Over the

past six decades, he has enjoyed an illustrious career in both public

service and private industry, and is widely recognized as a pioneer in

the advancement of corporate social responsibility issues.

Mr. Whitehead joined Goldman in 1947, was named partner nine years later, and became

cochairman and senior partner in 1976. Under his leadership, Goldman became one of the

world’s preeminent banking and brokerage firms. He retired as chairman in 1984.

In addition to his leadership role at Goldman, Mr. Whitehead served as a director of the

New York Stock Exchange, chairman of the Securities Industry Association, and later as

chairman of the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. In 1985, Mr. Whitehead

was asked to be Deputy Secretary of State under George Shultz, and served in that capacity

until January 1989.

In 1993, Mr. Whitehead created the John C. Whitehead Fund for Not-for-Profit Management

at Harvard Business School. In 2002 the Haas School of Business at the University of

California-Berkeley created the Whitehead Distinguished Fellowship in Corporate Responsi-

bility Fund in his honor.

Mr. Whitehead is a graduate of Haverford College, and received an MBA degree from

Harvard Business School. Besides serving as chairman of The Goldman Sachs Foundation,

he has served as chairman of the Boy Scouts in New York, the Mellon Foundation, the

International Rescue Committee, the Chairman’s Council of the National Gallery of Art,

the Brookings Institution, and the Board of Overseers of Harvard University.

The Corporate Governance Laureate Medal

Adrian Cadbury

The former chairman of Cadbury Ltd (later Cadbury Schweppes),

Adrian Cadbury remains one of the United Kingdom’s most respected

businessmen. He has served in a variety of capacities over the past

30 years, many related to corporate governance.

In 1991 he chaired the U.K. Committee on the Financial Aspects of

Corporate Governance, which published its seminal Report and Code of Best Practice in

December 1992. He was also a member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation

and Development’s (OECD’s) Business Sector Advisory Group on Corporate Governance,

which reported in April 1998.

For his efforts, Adrian Cadbury received the International Corporate Governance Network

Award in 2001. His book Corporate Governance and Chairmanship: A Personal View was

published by Oxford University Press in 2002 and has been translated into Chinese and

Japanese. He currently serves as a lecturer on the subjects of business ethics and corporate

governance, and he is a member of the OECD’s Business Sector Group, which has just been

launched to provide boards with practical guidance on corporate governance.

In addition to his corporate governance responsibilities, Adrian Cadbury served as a director

of the Bank of England from 1970–1994 and a director of IBM in the United Kingdom

from 1975–1994. He was also the Chancellor of Aston University from 1979 through 2004.

He graduated from Kings College, Cambridge with an MA degree in economics. Joining

Cadbury in 1952, he rose to the position of chairman of Cadbury Limited in 1965 and retired

as chairman of Cadbury Schweppes in 1989.

The Social Responsibility Laureate Medal

Dr. Karl-Henrik Robèrt

Professor Karl-Henrik Robèrt, MD, PhD, one of Sweden’s foremost cancer

scientists, is the founder of The Natural Step (TNS), an international non-

governmental organization that promotes a scientific consensus approach

for “social, ecological, and economic sustainability.”

Through The Natural Step, Professor Robèrt has developed a scientific

framework for strategic sustainable development. It is unique in being able to cover the full

scope of sustainability and sustainable development at the same time as it is generic, i.e.,

it can be applied to any business or project at any scale. This makes it possible for people

from different sciences and sectors and businesses to cooperate in a systematic way toward

a society that is socially, ecologically, and financially sustainable. To cooperate across

disciplines in science, and across sectors in society, is essential for effective sustainable

development. Professor Robèrt has pioneered the development of this unique framework

and has used it and refined it in real-life situations across the globe for a fifteen-year period.

Professor Robèrt has published a number of books and articles on the subject of environment

and sustainability. He is also a member of the roundtable on “A Sustainable Project for

European Society” convened by European Commission President Romano Prodi. In 1999

Professor Robèrt won the Green Cross Award for International Leadership, and in 2000

he won the Blue Planet Prize for ecological sustainability, sponsored by the Asahi Glass

Foundation.

Over the last 30 years, Professor Robèrt also achieved distinction in the academic world.

In 1979 he earned a PhD degree in medicine from the Karolinska Institute, and subsequently

served on the faculties of many of Sweden’s most prestigious hospitals and universities,

including Huddinge University Hospital, the Chalmers Institute of Technology, and the

Blekinge Institute of Technology. Professor Robèrt is a fellow of the World Business

Academy, an advisory board member at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Doctor

of Public Service—Honorus Causa at the University of Portland in the United States.
