Blakeney Cley and District RBL Branch and the
Harbour Room
Well, like absolutely everybody else, we are having to learn to
adapt! And so, have our customers!!
First and foremost we have had the privilege to host the
Blakeney Group Support Team’s web presence –
Google bcdrbl.org - and you should get most of the up-to-date
information there is on the COVID 19 self-help groups in and
around Blakeney, what they’re doing and what they want to do
– and where you can help. There are also signposting links to
a lot of useful wider information sources.
As for the Harbour Room. Obviously, it’s closed. But that
doesn’t mean that we’ve been idle. So far, we have run the
usual monthly Folk Club, did it virtually over zoom – the
Harbour Zoom – geddit! As well as a new poetry reading club.
Hopefully, by the time you get this we will have trialled a few
other initiatives too, like – virtually popping in for a drink –
the (very) Happy Hour and maybe a virtual coffee morning.

*******************************
Well Covid-19 came along and changed the world and our
daily lives as we know it; nothing and no one has been
unaffected in one way or another.
Blakeney and the surrounding communities have rallied
around to look after one another as they always do when there
is a need. We have a great team of volunteers ready and
willing to help those in need however they can, and this they
have been doing in earnest over the past few weeks.
There was much about the Coronavirus in the last edition
which was rapidly looming down on us at the time of the last
deadline and I am certain that there will be much more in the
pages of this current edition, and thus I shall not repeat it all.
The main thing is to remember to keep up to date, the news,
websites and Facebook pages of official organisations
continue to be updated daily as this continues to be a faced
paced scenario.
But most importantly KEEP HOME & STAY SAFE; together
we will beat this.
If you are one of the many people reading this not in
Blakeney, then please rest assured that when all is well and it
is safe to do so, you will be warmly welcomed back into our
village and our community, just as we look forward to being
able to spread our wings and venture further ourselves, but
in the meantime, please do follow the current government
advice, which as I write, is to stay at home.
Residents Permits – If you are eligible, then please do get in
touch, as they are still being issued by post. You can email
or post your information and request as per the previous
report.
Boats for Sale – The viewing date of Saturday 25th April, for
any boats removed from the dinghy park has been cancelled.
A new date will be announced in due course.
Blakeney Dinghy Park – If you already have a boat in the
dinghy park, or plan to take one down there when things
return to normal, then please ensure that you have registered
it with us. The registration form along with the up to date
user regulations are available on our website
www.blakeneyparishcouncil.org.uk
Parish Council business – Although there was no April
meeting, we have still been mega busy, in fact busier than
usual in the first 10 days of the Covid-19 pandemic, as we
were inundated with information from government, other
local authorities and numerous organisations and groups, and
of course lots of local people offering help and those in need
of help and support. All in all, a massive amount of
information has been received and shared. Applications for
funding to help our community have been made and people
have been working very hard.
There was no March meeting, but work has to carry on, and
below are the main items that have been actioned since the
last report.
PARTY ON THE PASTURES 2020
SUNDAY 23RD AUGUST
We are still busy planning for this, in the hope that things will have settled down and this will
give us something to look forward to as a community once these dark times have
passed. ☺
8
Trading Sites x 3 on The Carnser – Under the current
circumstances, the second instalment of the rent has been
deferred to 30th April, but will be reconsidered again 10 days
before this in order to ascertain the current state of affairs at
the time.
Planning applications
PF/20/0274 – Erection of storage and welfare building in
association with the reclamation yard, retentions of containers
used for storage, formation of new car park area, and
associated access routes and other associated works and
levelling of mound (part retrospective) at; The Acreage,
Coast Road, Wiveton. No objection.
PF/20/0396 – Demolition of bungalow and erection of 2 x two
storey dwellings (semi-detached), erection of 2 x detached
garages and boundary wall at; Fiddlers Rest, 6 New Road,
Blakeney. No objection.
PF/20/0489 – Installation of rooflights and Juliet balconies,
enlargement of dormer windows, fenestration alterations, part
conversion of garage into habitable space, recladding front
gable, driveway alterations and rebuilding of front wall at;
Turnstone, 17 Back Lane, Blakeney. No objection.
PF/20/0491 – Part demolition of wall and creation of new
(additional) vehicular access at; Woodpecker Cottage, 4
Wiveton Road, Blakeney. Object; due to the property’s
proximity to the school and the adverse effect it will have on
parking availability in a busy road, and also its proximity to
the crossroads.
Other Items
Grass Cutting – We will continue with our fortnightly grass
cutting programme at this time.
Accounts for payment – The March accounts totalled
£16,684.48 and included much work which had already been
undertaken.
Grounds Maintenance Contract – NORSE have now ceased
with our contract and hence we obtained 5 other quotes for the
work to cut and look after the general areas of our village
playing field, former school field, The Pastures and Little
Butts footpath. The contract has been awarded to CGM with
immediate effect, and the great news, is that we have even
managed to save some money!

should keep an eye on the NNDC website at the moment as a
first resort and respond direct to NNDC with any
objections/comments/support but by all means copy the

Update from the churches of the
Glaven Valley Benefice
Dear all,
It won’t come as any surprise to you to discover that
there is very little to report or advertise in our
churches at the moment! As you’ll be aware, our
churches have had to remain completely closed
since late March, and at the time of writing, there is
sadly little prospect of that changing in the weeks to
come. It’s not yet possible for us to begin planning
“life after lockdown”! When that happy time
comes, we will be swinging into action again with
our services and social events, as all the different
activities become feasible again.
However, in the meantime, there is a lot that’s going
on remotely. Here are some of those things we can
offer at the moment to anyone who’d like to avail
themselves:
• we’ve set up our own ‘Glaven Valley
Churches’ Youtube channel. We launched
this especially for Holy Week, and have
posted short films for reflection on Maundy
Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Day.
There will probably be more to come, but
you might like to look at those already there.
Got to Youtube, search for ‘Glaven Valley
Churches’, and click where you see the flint
wall cross in a circle. Details also on our
website home page:
www.glavenvalleychurches.org.uk
• We’re holding online services every Sunday
at 11.00 via Google Hangout.
You can also find instructions for linking in
with this on our website home page (see
above).
If you’re having any difficulties
downloading that or hooking up, Tricia has
kindly offered to help (contact her on
I’m also sending out, each week in advance,
an order of service for people to follow at
the time (with or without joining Google
Hangout). So if you’d like to be included,
just email me on
[email protected] and I’ll add
you to my list.
• There are so many wonderful initiatives
happening in our villages at the moment, in
terms of practical support. The details of
these will be found on this site and others.
And I’d like to reassure you that, alongside
those, the churches are still here and active
for everyone, even if only over the phone, if
you or someone you know needs personal or
pastoral support. And thank you to
everyone in these amazing communities for
all you’re doing!
The season of Easter continues for seven weeks up
to Pentecost. We are celebrating the new life and
hope that was shown to us in the Resurrection.
Even under these very tough conditions at the
moment, that hope still shines. God loves us, and
offers us a vision to keep us going. And we’ll get
there!
God bless you,
Richard

WEATHER MARCH 2020.
A dry month
Maximum and minimum temperatures March 2020.
Average high 11.8c Average Low 3.7c Mean 7.8c
Rainfall 17.5mm. Average 44.2mm.
The mean temperature for March was 1.1c above normal and rainfall was 40% of
normal.
The dry spell has allowed the land to dry out and allowed farmers and gardeners to
get on with their spring cultivations. So far(12th) I have only measured 6.5mm. of
rain. Bill Hudson. Cley

I hope you and yours are all doing well in these challenging
times and finding pleasure in the new normal way of life. It
has certainly been wonderful to see the community response
to the coronavirus outbreak- that is one of the silver linings.
There are not surprisingly changes to the Friends of Cley
Church Events in 2020. So far, the programme looks thus:
POSTPONED Thurs 7th May, 6pm - AGM and drinks party,
all welcome.
POSTPONED Sat 30th May, 6pm - Safari Drinks Party
followed by a fish’n’chips supper in Cley Village Hall.
POSTPONED Sat 13th June, 7.30pm - The Fakenham Choral
Society, ‘Songs for a Summer Evening’.
TO BE DECIDED Thurs 2nd July to Sun 2nd August, 10-5pm
daily - Cley 20 Contemporary Art Exhibition, curated by
Amanda Geitner, Director of the East Anglia Art Fund and
previously Chief Curator of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual
Arts.
TO BE DECIDED Sat 18th July, 2-4pm - St Margaret’s Fair
(Memorial Field).
TO BE DECIDED Friday, July 24th, 6pm - ‘The Art of
Nowhere and Painting on Glass’, talk and tour of Cley 20 by
curator Amanda Geitner and artist Emma Blount.
Sat 3rd October, 6pm - John Pakenham’s ‘A Walk on the Wild
Side in East Africa’.
Sun 29th November, 4pm - Advent Carol Service with the
Gresham’s Choir.
These will all be held in St Margaret’s Church, unless
specified. More details of each event going ahead will be
advertised in the GVN closer to the time.
Because our fundraising events have been drastically reduced
the first half of the year, the only way the Friends of Cley
Church can raise money for Cley Church is through us doing
our online shopping via easyfundraising. Each time we make
an online purchase through easyfundraising on behalf of the
Friends, the retailer kindly donates a percentage of the price
of the goods sold to the Friends. Given we’re all doing a lot
more of our shopping online at the moment, it is a really good
opportunity to raise money for the church! It really is
straightforward to get started, just visit www.
Easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/friendsofcleychurch. Thank
you very much indeed.
Cley Parish Council Chairman’s
April Report
First of all, I would like to give my best wishes to the family
of David Holmes who very sadly passed away in March. He
was a well-respected member of the Parish Council in the late
1980s to mid-90s who contributed significantly to the
wellbeing of the village. He will be greatly missed.
I hope we continue to get through the coronavirus outbreak
relatively unscathed. Cley Parish Council wants to make sure
we’re doing all we can to help our community, so if you need
any help because of the outbreak and lockdown, please get in
touch with the Clerk on 01263513269, or Chair on
01263740348. Please do ask if you need someone to collect
groceries, prescriptions, items from Boots, walk your dog,
stack logs or have a friendly chat.
We have been overwhelmed by the response from the village
(and beyond) in terms of helping out, and feel blessed to live
in such a caring community which has really come together
during these difficult times. Thank you all. This is what we
need to see, and to continue when all this is over.
We’ve also been lucky enough to receive a £1,000 grant from
the Norfolk Community Foundation through the COVID-19
Community Response Fund to help us with our work in the
community. This will enable our volunteers to provide more
vulnerable parishioners with essential food and supplies.
Cley Parish Council has tried to help control the spread of
coronavirus in the village, following national guidelines. The
police have closed off the Beach Road, and the Parish Council
various parking areas to discourage non-essential visitors (we
don’t know how long this will be for). The Parish Council has
written to holiday letting companies, including Airbnb, still
continuing to let properties in Cley throughout the period of
government restrictions, to say this is not appropriate.
I understand there have been differing views in the village
highlighted by the outbreak and our responses to it, but we all
have a part to play in Cley’s overall economic and social
wellbeing. We all need to respect each other and not
undermine our wonderful community spirit.
If anyone is experiencing a short-term financial crisis as a
result of the coronavirus outbreak, there are funds available
to help out. To find out more about this, please contact the
clerk on 01263513269 or [email protected].
You won’t be surprised to hear that the Newgate Green verge
improvement project has been postponed, as has the
installation of our speeding camera and the training of our
community speed watch team.
However, we’re pleased to report the Environmental Agency
has replaced/fixed the Glaven Outfall Sluice, which will help
prevent river flooding.
We were extremely disappointed that our bid to make The
George Public House an Asset of Community Value failed.
This was because The George was considered to be a hotel
rather than a pub, despite the huge support from the village
Cley
16
for it as a pub. Given we had 178 signatures behind us, we don’t
see how we could have made a clearer argument.
The community loo is being built! Chris has planned the work
to maintain social distancing. Hopefully we can still have a
grand opening but when? We are looking for a cleaner if
anyone is interested.
NNDC have approved NWT’s plan to put pay and display
parking in the visitor centre and the beach, despite our
strenuous objections on the grounds that this will cause
unacceptable parking displacement in an AONB.
We will be holding Parish Council meeting(s) by tele and
videoconference. The agenda will be published on the Notice
Board and on the website, and you are welcome to comment on
any of the topics or send us general questions, which we will
endeavour to answer. Minutes then will be posted as usual. We
are postponing the Annual Parish Meeting. Please check on the
website and Notice Board to find out when business returns to
normal.

I Am!
I am—yet what I am none cares or knows; My friends forsake me like a memory lost:
I am the self-consumer of my woes— They rise and vanish in oblivious host,
Like shadows in love’s frenzied stifled throes And yet I am, and live—like vapours tossed
Into the nothingness of scorn and noise,
Into the living sea of waking dreams, Where there is neither sense of life or joys, But the vast shipwreck of my life’s esteems;
Even the dearest that I loved the best Are strange—nay, rather, stranger than the rest.
I long for scenes where man hath never trod A place where woman never smiled or wept
There to abide with my Creator, God, And sleep as I in childhood sweetly slept, Untroubling and untroubled where I lie
The grass below—above the vaulted sky.

OBITUARY
Hugh Cecil
1941-2020
Hugh Cecil, a much loved and respected resident of The Old
Rectory, Wiveton, died on 11th March 2020 after a long,
debilitating illness.
Hugh was a professional military historian, he was Lecturer
in Modern History at Leeds University for 30 years and
author of a number of books which were at the same time
scholarly, original and amusing. The best known are probably
“Flower of Battle: How Britain Wrote the Great War”, which
gives a fascinating alternative view of many combatants’ war
experiences, and “Salisbury, the man and his policies” a study
of his distinguished ancestor. He was a keen student of
wartime poetry and of some of the largely forgotten British
poets and writers of the 1920s and ‘30s. He also co-authored
books with his wife, Mirabel, including “Clever Hearts”, a
biography of Hugh’s grandfather, Desmond MacCarthy, and
Desmond’s wife Molly MacCarthy. Hugh and Mirabel
became deeply interested in the artist Rex Whistler and
published two beautifully-produced volumes dealing with his
life and works. On a less serious note, the Cecils co-authored
a series of children’s books, Teddies Tales.
Hugh was a founder of the Second World War Experience
Society, based in Otley, a comprehensive collection of
records of wartime experiences of civilian and combatants.
Hugh was a quiet, gentle man with a wonderful sense of
humour and an infectious sense of fun. His marriage to
Mirabel was an exceptionally happy one, as is evidenced by
their seamless co-operation in the books they wrote together.
He was much loved in Wiveton where he had a wide circle of
friends and relations. Until he was struck down by a cruel
illness, he was a regular worshipper at Wiveton Church, of
which the Cecil family have been generous supporters. He
died surrounded by his family – Mirabel, his two sons and
two daughters.
Wiveton Church
Sadly, the only news this month from the Friends of Wiveton
Church is that, following the Government’s minimum three-
week extension of the lockdown, we have postponed two
further events (watch this space for rearranged dates):
Thursday, 14 May - talk by Lord Somerleyton on Rewilding.
POSTPONED
Saturday, 20 June - Wiveton Midsummer Market.
POSTPONED
We are still hoping that our major fundraising Concert at the
Auden Theatre on Saturday, 12 September will go ahead but
this is dependent on many things. We will update here.
Keep safe and well.

National Trust –
Blakeney National Nature Reserve
The 2020 breeding bird season is here! We are already seeing
many Sandwich Terns on Blakeney Point and eagerly await
the arrival of the Little Tern which we expect to see very soon.
This is the busiest time of year for our countryside team and
can be a stressful as well as exciting time as we hope for a
successful breeding season for all our wildlife but never quite
knowing how it’s going to turn out.
This year is no different and our ranger team is still busy
working away and monitoring our precious and often rare
Norfolk coast wildlife on this important National Nature
Reserve. With the current travel restrictions there are less
people around which may help our native wildlife at this
sensitive time but we know that many of you living locally
are lucky enough to be able to use this area for your daily
exercise and so we are asking for your help to make 2020 a
successful season. As usual the dog restrictions are in place
on Blakeney Point until 15 August and we kindly ask that you
follow any signs or advice given by the National Trust and do
not cross any fence lines you come across. Dogs are allowed
on short leads only for the first 1km from Cley beach car park
(which is currently closed). The far western point (from the
gap) is closed to public access at all times so please do not
land or pass signs into this area which is one of the most
sensitive areas on the point.
With the vast majority of birds nesting on the ground, they
are very susceptible to disturbance or being trodden on. If you
are walking out across the saltmarshes, please stick to existing
paths and keep dogs under close control or ideally on short
leads to minimise the risk to any nests and chicks close by.
All of this will greatly help our wildlife and give it the best
chance of success. Here’s a really great video that highlights
some of the issues our ground-nesting birds face on the coast
and the detrimental effect it can have:

URGENT APPEAL – NORFOLK ACCIDENT
RESCUE SERVICE
Dear Editor,
We would be grateful if this could be publicised by your
Parish on any available forum (e.g.: notice board, website,
Parish magazine) and also passed to any local group or
individual who may be able to assist us in any way.
Additionally, we would welcome any businesses who have
surplus PPE that they would be prepared to donate to contact
us directly.
We would also be grateful if any of your
contacts/parishioners could think of an innovative way to
raise funds for us from the safety of their own homes as
donations for NARS have dramatically declined during these
difficult times.
We appreciate that many Parish Councils already support us
by making donations and we hope that you will not mind us
contacting you in these exceptional circumstances.
We would like to thank you for taking the time to read this
appeal.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like any
additional information.
Kind regards

Update from the Museum of the Broads
Following Government regulations during lockdown, the
Museum is closed for the foreseeable future with events up to
the end of June cancelled. Volunteers and staff who have
worked so hard to get the Museum ready for the new season
are all disappointed.
At this difficult time, when our lovely Broads landscape is not
accessible for many, we are encouraging you to remember
your special holidays and days out. Post photos and recall
those memories to help others as well as yourself, at
#WishYouWereHereMemories.
In the meantime, stay well. The Museum and all the Broads
has to offer will still be here when we can enjoy it again.
