Dear Parents and Students,

Our annual Art Exhibition is also being held this week. This is another highly anticipated event where the HSC Major Bodies of Work from the

class of 2015 will be on display as well as the major projects of our art students from Years 7 to 11. A significant amount of time and energy has been invested from the students and their teachers in creating these resolved pieces and I strongly encourage all members of our school community to take the time to visit the exhibition which opens on Wednesday 26 August.

An important date for the calendar is the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony. This year this will take place on Friday 18 September, commencing at 12.00pm in the school hall. This is a very significant afternoon for our school community as we are able to formally celebrate the end of the high school journey for the graduating class of 2015. SSuubbjjeecctt SSeelleeccttiioonn We have now completed our subject selection processes for 2016. It has been wonderful to have the opportunity to host a number of information evenings over the past few weeks to share valuable information and advice with both students and parents. I have appreciated the support from the teaching staff who also attended the evenings to ensure

Page 2: The Gazette - St George Girls High School Gazette/August Gazette.pdf · The Gazette Monthly Bulletin August 2015 ... gifted students benefit from a range of opportunities and my final

that accurate information and advice was available to support students and their parents in making informed subject decisions. I am proud of the breadth of curriculum available at our school that provides our students with the opportunities to immerse themselves in a range of experiences and subjects. I know that gifted students benefit from a range of opportunities and my final advice to all students is to ensure that they each experience a range of subjects to support them in identifying where their particular strengths, interests and abilities lie. The school will now start to formulate the subject lines for 2016 and we are hoping to be able to accommodate most of the student choices within our timetable structure.

EEaarrllyy LLeeaavvee RReeqquueessttss I wanted to remind parents about the school process that exists regarding early departure requests. If students are required to leave school prior to the end of the school day for any reason, a written note must be provided in the morning and verified by the Principal or Deputy Principal. The written note needs to indicate the reason for the early departure request, the time the student will be leaving school as well as a clear destination that the child is travelling to. These requests must be signed by a parent and dated in order to be processed by the office. Students need to ensure that these requests are made at the start of the school day to ensure that the office has the time to process the requests.

PP&&CC FFaammiillyy DDiinnnneerr I had the pleasure of attending my first P&C Family Dinner on Saturday 8 August. Ms Abson and I had a wonderful evening and enjoyed the opportunity to talk to students and their parents in a more informal setting. I wanted to thank the P&C executive, in particular, President Katia Vardakis, for the effort that was invested in creating such a fun and enjoyable evening. I look forward to the next P&C meeting on Thursday 27 August and encourage all parents to come along to the meeting which commences at 7:00pm in the staff common room.

SSttuuddeenntt AAcchhiieevveemmeennttss Each month I receive correspondence relating to the wonderful achievements that our students experience across a range of areas. This month I am proud to announce that our Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Orchestra have been selected to perform items at the 2015 State Music Festival at the Town Hall on the Monday 14 September and Wednesday 16 September. Their selection is a testament to the quality and standard of the pieces that were submitted as part of the highly competitive audition process. I wish the students and their conductors a very successful festival experience.

Our students were also very successful at the recent Sutherland Shire and St George Youth Music Awards. Hannah Chiu and Veronica Tsang advanced into the finals for Composition and Alice Hu, Annie Ma and Salina Myat advanced into the finals for Performance. The students certainly scooped the pool and their combined prize money amounted $1100. Alice Hu came 2

nd, Annie Ma 3

rd and Salina Myat received the

Promising Talent award. In the composition section, Veronica Tsang came 2

nd and Hannah Chiu 3

rd with their

orchestral items. This is a very impressive achievement from this group of very talented Music students.

Congratulations I would like to congratulate the following students for achieving a Gold Certificate indicating that they have received thirty Merit and/or Participation Certificates:

Helen Chen of Year 9.

Lynn Gao of Year 10. I would like to congratulate the following students for receiving Principal Certificates:

ear 12 have just completed their trial HSC examinations and I congratulate all students on the excellent manner in which they conducted

themselves. Results from the trials are a good indicator of what they know and just as importantly the areas where more depth of knowledge is required. It is important that they use the feedback from their trials to structure their study timetables to reinforce their understanding of subject content. During their study times it is also very important that after an hour students take a rest break and they should also continue to eat healthy meals and maintain their fluid intake.

Attendance at school is required for the rest of the term and is very important as most subjects have some course content to finalise and will then be undertaking revision of the course content and examination techniques. This period of time leading up to the HSC examinations is very important as it will enable students to further develop their depth of understanding and knowledge, and could make a significant difference to their HSC results.

Congratulations to all Year 10 girls who attended work experience in week 4. From all reports it was a very successful and rewarding experience for them. Ms Abson Deputy Principal

VVeerryy BBiigg TThhaannkk YYoouu to the 30+ students who baked cakes and slices to raise funds for Rose and Willow, the koalas sponsored by St George

Girls High School through the Australian Koala Foundation. A special mention goes to Mia Lo Russo of 8C who made koala cupcakes! A total of $1015.55 was raised, all of which will go to the Australian Koala Foundation. $360 will go towards our adoption of Rose for the next 12 months. The remaining $655.55 will be used by the Australian Koala Foundation to plant approximately 55 native gum trees to provide food for koalas in the wild. The tasks involved include preparing ground, weed control, digging holes, planting trees, follow up maintenance, watering, fencing and general clean-up work. Restoration of koala habitat is vital in fragmented and isolated landscapes. Many koala populations are surviving in remnant areas of poor habitat quality as primary habitat mostly existed on the more fertile soils which are now used for farming and residential areas. Restoration and expansion of primary habitat is the goal of our tree planting program. When you plant a tree in Harrold’s Forest you will help koalas in a very direct way by improving and expanding their habitat. St George Girls High School appears on the Silver Leaf Honour Boards of the Australian Koala Foundation. Each year our donations are accumulated. YYeeaarr 99 FFoooodd TTeecchhnnoollooggyy –– HHiigghh TTeeaa n the 6th of August, our Year 9 Food Technology class presented a beautiful high tea. We chose to prepare this occasion, as we

were studying Food Service and Catering and the origin of High Tea. Each bay had decided which food item they would like to make and we invited the Principal, Ms Romeo, the deputies, Ms Abson and Mr Treacy and our year advisor, Ms Zhang, along as special guests. This specific event was chosen to give students the experience of what it is like to prepare and cook for an event, as well as experiencing a high tea with all the beautiful cups and saucers and delicate treats. The lesson started with everyone rushing in and preheating their ovens to 200℃. Each bay collected their ingredients and then hurried off to begin the cooking process. The recipes varied from white chocolate and passionfruit scones, shortbread and butterfly cupcakes, to colourful canapés and ribbon sandwiches. Throughout the next 40 minutes of cooking time, the food lab was filled with a combination of beautiful aromas. Our food technician, Mrs Winger, set the table with lovely purple flowers and matching serviettes and dainty china teacups and saucers that were neatly positioned on the long table with large three tier cake stands. The setting was elegant and sophisticated. For many, it was their first High Tea experience. The class had a choice between Earl Grey and English Breakfast tea.

The experiences we gained from the High Tea included a production line for the ribbon sandwiches, mass producing large quantities of food and working together and co-ordinating all the food to be ready for the start of the high tea. We had a wonderful time and developed further knowledge regarding food service and catering. The experience was one we will never forget. Everyone, including the teachers, enjoyed it. We want to thank our teacher, Ms Thompson, and our food technician, Mrs Winger, for giving us this opportunity. Written by the Year 9 Food Technology class

OOzz TTaagg GGaallaa DDaayy n Tuesday 11 August, 72 eager and enthusiastic girls set off to Scarborough Park to attend the St George Region Oz Tag Gala Day. The day

started with high spirits, sunshine and a short bus ride. On arrival, we realised we were at the wrong end of the field, and the girls not only had what they described as a “long walk” to the other end, they also had two very heavy and awkward St George Girls tents to transport. We made it to the other end of the field after many laughs, interchanges of carrying the tent and people taking videos and pictures of this ordeal. The tents went up, the girls got their St George Girls shirts on and warmed up, ready for their first game.

Seven teams entered on the day and all played 4 games against other schools. Some wins, some draws and some losses. However, there was no loss shown from our school. The girls’ participation, enthusiasm and team work on the day was commendable and they represented our school at the highest standard. The improvement shown from their first game to the end of the day was outstanding! I would like to thank the team organisers who helped me coordinate the day and their teams and all the other girls who attended to make it a brilliant day! Bring On Next Year!

TThhee EEtthhiiccss CCoonnnneeccttiioonn Sydney Boys High School ‘Everyone has a voice, Everyone has a choice.’

he 29th of July 2015 dawned early for eight gifted and talented individuals from Years 8 and 9. Sasha, Maria, Brenda, Sophie, Elicia,

Mehnaz, Angela and Sandra were all ready to dive into a day full of art, music, writing and philosophy. The day began by meeting Mr Morrison at Kogarah Station and it was here that our first problem arose… we couldn’t buy bus tickets.

Our advanced problem solving skills were given their first test of the day and after much racing around Kogarah, tickets were obtained and the train boarded in the nick of time. After being squashed by multitudes of innocent people on their way to work, the eight of us and Mr Morrison exited Central Station and found our way onto a bus full of Sydney Boys and Girls students.

Once we arrived at Sydney Boys (and after being wowed by their beautiful grounds), we were taken to their hall to meet the people we would be working with – students from North Sydney Girls, Sydney Boys, Sydney Girls and Sydney Tech. We began the day with two ‘ice-breaker’ activities: ‘People Bingo’, where we learned obscure facts about each other and the students we would be working with. Angela became a star as one of only three people who had been to Vietnam, and ‘Pictionary’, where the Visual Arts team produced some amazing artwork! The next three hours were dedicated to working on our question (“What will happen if we remain silent about things that matter?”) in our chosen groups. Each group was assigned a different medium of expression to analyse the question and prepare a presentation for the whole group at the end of the day. The different groups analysed the question philosophically, looked at it from a musical perspective, used their skills in writing to create a written piece and took a creative route through the visual arts. At the end of our day, all groups performed exceptionally well and the amount of talent was seriously overwhelming. The different groups touched on a range of ethical issues affecting our society including climate change and refugees and slavery, with all groups stressing the importance of speaking up to create a better world for all. It was great fun to

collaborate with other schools, to challenge and extend our thinking outside the classroom and to socialise with people our age. The day ended appropriately by taking a photo with the statue of Apollo, (god of philosophy, amongst other things), situated in the Sydney Boys grounds. After being photobombed by the Sydney Techs not once, but twice, the day ended with us all smiling gratefully for an amazing day. This excursion wouldn’t have been possible without Mr Morrison’s assistance and efforts. We would like to give a massive thank you to Mr Morrison who accompanied us on this fantastic excursion.

‘Everyone has a voice, Everyone has a choice.’

Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available prior to the meeting. The meeting will start with a presentation conducted by our guest speaker Ms Iosifidis Head Teacher Mathematics. Our Bunnings BBQ on the 12 July 2015 was a success raising $959 net profit. The P&C Dinner was held on Saturday 8 August 2015 at the Emporium Function Centre, Bankstown. It was an absolutely fun night addressed by our Principal Ms Romeo who was accompanied by our new Deputy Principal Ms Abson. The meal comprised an elegant three course dinner, and a candy bar in a beautifully decorated hall with red roses and golden ribbons on the chairs, filled with warm chats from dads, mothers and daughters. There was also a lucky door prize and many other prizes, fully licensed bar, dance area and ending the night with a bit of a noisy bang. The guests had the chance to break some plaster plates when the Zorba dance came on. The P&C is kindly asking the parents of St George Girls High School to donate some gifts for the raffle prizes for the Multicultural Food Festival and some packets of biscuits, teas, herbal teas, coffee, bottles of wine, small jars of jam, vegemite, crackers, bread sticks, shortbreads and other small items to make at least five hampers. Our President, Melissa George, thanked the committee members for their dedication and willing work on behalf of the St Georgians and the school. A special vote of thanks was given to Laurel Pretty for her many years of service to The St Georgians, and her excellent organisation of our memorabilia and her willingness to attend reunions to offer these items for sale for the benefit of the school. It was with great pleasure that we welcomed a new face to our AGM and to the monthly meeting that followed. It was wonderful to get some fresh input into how we can move forward with the St Georgians and support our members and the school. The St Georgians meet on the fourth Thursday of each month during school terms, at the St George Leagues Club, 124 Princes Highway Kogarah. These meetings are open to all former students, with voting rights limited to Life members. Our next meeting will be held on Thursday 27 August, commencing at 11.00am. We have a great group of ladies, and it’s a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Don’t worry if you are not a member of the club and live within the club’s ‘radius’ – we are able to sign you in. If you are interested in coming along please don’t hesitate to contact us at the email or numbers below for details and to check that the date or venue has not been changed. We also invite you to stay after the meeting for a little socialising and perhaps lunch in the Bistro. We are always keen to meet new members, and look forward to seeing you there!
