THE COMPOST Dear Ladies of the Club, It is such a pleasure that the bulbs are peaking out after a long chill and the robins are very busy. Maybe spring is finally here. It is spring for GCC with our April and May meetings on the horizon. In April, Susan Bercheck will treat us to a talk on hydrangeas at Burton Court. Susan will have wonderful ideas for all of our gardens. In May, we will gather at Holden for a workshop on digital photography techniques with Sandy Bergsten, a boxed lunch and an opportunity to take pictures with Sandy providing tips and pointers. The workshop will inspire us for a fun on-going photography project our Photography Committee is planning, more on this to follow. Several years ago, our club had the opportunity to tour the Ohio Heritage Garden at the Governor’s Residence in Bexley, Ohio. We also supported the Garden through our Charitable Fund for a number of years. In early June, Guy Denny, honorary GCA member, and Hope Taft will offer a special tour of the Garden for members of Zone X and their families. More information is in this edition of the Compost. The tour sounds like a very special opportunity. Dale Naylor and Margaret Wilson are busy planning the Zone Meeting we will host in June, 2015. Lisa McConnell is chairman of the Zone flower show that will be part of the meeting. As I have said before, this is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase our city and our club, and enjoy working together! A small group of our members have been working with a graphic designer to develop a logo for GCC. The first set of proofs are back and they are terrific. We have some work of ahead of us but we should have a logo to present to the Club very soon. In May, Paula Coleman and I will represent GCC at the GCA Annual Meeting in New Orleans. I am very lucky that my first trip to the Big Easy has been planned by GCA! I look forward to sharing knowledge, impressions and photos after the meeting. Many thanks to Lorna Meirke and her helpers Paula Coleman and Melanie Biche for a fabulous Jean Frazier workshop in January! Our horizontal line arrangements were amazing and a welcome sight in all of our homes. Thank you also to Mary-Scott Cebul for arranging a very thoughtful presentation on fracturing given by Rich Cochran. Rich shared his concerns about safety for our environment and his impressive vision of the benefits fracking could provide our region. I hope to see many of you at our upcoming meetings. Hiking with GCC!   This long winter has been more easily endured by those who have found delight in snowy outdoor activities. Your Garden Club of Cleveland hiking group has found themselves buoyed by time spent outdoors this winter. !Four brave souls, properly attired for the wind and cold, enjoyed the new Acacia Reservation on a sub-zero day in February. In March, with snow still on the ground, five women explored the trails in the Chapin Reservation. Although the day was a dark, windy, 40 degrees, the clouds were high enough to allow a view the Cleveland skyline - 20 miles away! !On April 7th there was a threat of rain, but finally, no snow as we walked! The photo shows our group at Mill Creek Falls in the Garfield Reservation. We spied a few common Ohio birds, deer, but no wildflowers, yet. !The final hike this spring will be Friday, May 30th, at the Holden Arboretum. We will tackle a rugged two mile trail - the Pierson Creek loop for a glimpse of the native ephemerals that should be at their peak. The native wildflowers were spectacular last year. It is my hope that this will be a fabulous time to be in this hidden ravine. !It is always great to have women join us for the first time. Perhaps you might be ready to join us on May 30th? Please let me know your plans so that I might keep you updated on the details of our hike. !Paula Coleman [email protected]

Drink Up, Ladies!

Your Empties Are Needed… !!In anticipation of the multitude of fabulous hort entries for our 2015 Zone X Flower Show here in Cleveland, we’re appealing to all of you for empty bottles (no, not wine bottles, that’s for after the Show).

We need green glass water bottles (labels soaked off, please!); Perrier, in 750ml and 330ml sizes, and/or San Pellegrino, in 750ml and 500ml sizes. Those are basically the tall (not monster) and medium sized bottles.

If you have any friends who are regular Perrier or San Pellegrino drinkers, please have them save their empties for you. As well, if you eat out and order one of these bottled waters (glass only, please), feel no shame in tossing those empties into your purse and bring them home to add to your collection.

At last inventory count, we have approximately some bottles. By our precise calculations we need gazillions of bottles. Please bring your cache to each meeting over the next year and they will be gratefully collected from you. If you have collected cases full, they can also be dropped off on my front porch in Gates Mills (1410 Chagrin River Rd). If it’s easier to have your collected bottles picked up, please contact me (440) 773-0207 or [email protected].

There is also a chance I might keep individual records of collected amounts and become downright vicious at the meetings, pointing a soil-grimed finger (it is spring, after all) at those who dare to attend, glassless.

Thank you very, very much! Because otherwise we will all have to be drinking a ton of these bubbly waters right before the show and be embarrassingly gassy in front of all our guests. Not a pretty thought, ladies….

~ Susan Holmes Bercheck

Fracking Policy, Politics, & Possibilities 2014 Conservation Meeting Recap !

Western Reserve Land Conservancy’s CEO Rich Cochran delivered a thought-provoking and engaging talk to all who attended our Conservation Meeting in February. The talk focused on conservation challenges and possibilities associated with hydraulic fracturing in Ohio. Rich shared that the Land Conservancy's strategy is to invest its existing strengths in eastern Ohio, such that the essential natural resources of the region are preserved concurrent with the oil and gas development. He said the key is to identify and preserve resources such as prime agricultural soils, working forests, wildlife lands, and surface water assets such as reservoirs, rivers and lakes. The Land Conservancy also sees an opportunity to revitalize historic cities in eastern Ohio (such as East Liverpool, Canton, and Cambridge) while oil and gas revenues are growing, which will spur wealth creation and job growth.  !GCC members & guests who participated in the meeting asked Rich to share some trusted resources, where we can learn more about this dynamic issue. He shared the following: !

https://www.sustainableshale.org/about/ !http://www.edf.org/climate/what-is-fracking !

Last, Rich was asked to provide more information about political leaders who are especially engaged in this issue and messaging we might use with them. He shared: !

Officials Federal:  Rob Portman, Sherrod Brown, David Joyce, Tim Ryan, and Bill Johnson. State:   Frank LaRose, John Kasich, and John Eklund !

Suggested Messaging: Federal: Please support efforts to create a pilot project in Ohio that would improve communities for the long-term, while oil and gas development is robust. An example of such a plan is Uncommon Ground for the Common Good, which is a plan the Land Conservancy promotes. State: He recommends the same messaging for Ohio officials. In addition, we might add a request that half of the severance tax should be invested in the future of the counties of eastern Ohio, in order to preserve their enduring economic assets such as farms and forests, and to revitalize their historic cities.
