1 THE COMPOST Late Summer Edition 2016 Dear Ladies of the Club, As usual, summer has flown by! Thank you Gail Resch for hosting our annual meeting and luncheon. The gardens were beautiful and the shade of the trees was truly appreciated. Deb Fitzgerald created the lovely centerpieces, mostly from her own garden, and the rest of the hostesses made sure the event ran perfectly. Congratulations to Paula, Dale and Margaret on very well deserved awards. THE COMPOST

Late Summer Edition 2016

Dear Ladies of the Club,

As usual, summer has flown by!

Thank you Gail Resch for hosting our annual meeting and luncheon. The gardens were beautiful and the shade of the trees was truly appreciated. Deb Fitzgerald created the lovely centerpieces, mostly from her own garden, and the rest of the

hostesses made sure the event ran perfectly.

Congratulations to Paula, Dale and Margaret on very well deserved awards. Lynn Shiverick presented Margaret and Dale with the GCA Club Appreciation Award for their “gracious leadership, exceptional organizational skills and thorough oversight of the highly successful 2015 Zone X Meeting.” Lynn presented Paula with the GCA Medal of Merit for her “quiet leadership and inspiration in Conservation, Horticulture, Floral Design and administrative skills over the past several years. Perhaps the most emblematic of her generous spirit, Paula has been faithfully leading guided walks through Cleveland’s

Metro Parks for our members for several years.” Thank you ladies for all that you do for our club!

The annual meeting is also the time to welcome our new Provisionals: Laurel Conrad, Erica Costa, Cindy Crosby, Carol Fountain, Jill Glubiak, and Debbie Weber and new active members: Sandy Brinn, Hilary Colvin, Mikiko Fujito, Margaret

Furnas, Barbara Richter and Amanda Zalud.

The board has been busy planning another exciting year of programs to educate and entice you to try new things. Look for more details on the last page and mark your calendars. I’d like to draw your attention to our February program. Shaker Lakes Garden Club has invited us to join them in hearing Patrick Blanc speak on February 28th. Enjoy the rest of the summer and I’ll look forward to seeing you at an

It was truly an honor to attend this year’s annual meeting

as a delegate. The meeting was held in Minneapolis,

Minnesota this May and highlighted the vast achievements

accomplished by the Garden Club of America which is

made up of 200 member clubs across the United States. It

was educational, interesting and most of all inspiring. I felt

that my role at the event, aside from having a really great

time, was to share best practices with other delegates on

topics such as fundraising, programming, community

service and information management. I learned a lot about

what other clubs are doing. However, the best part of the

meeting for me was gained through just listening and as I

said before being inspired.

I learned about a woman from Hawaii who saved the

breadfruit tree from near extinction then cultivated 75,000

trees. These trees were then sent to impoverished

countries, where the fruit can be put to great use seeing as

how one breadfruit can provide enough nutrition to feed two

woman for an entire day. Her goal is end world hunger. This

amazing woman was honored by the Garden Club of

America for her outstanding contribution to the world. I felt

honored to be part of an organization that celebrated and

awarded her accomplishments. When I first joined the

Garden Club of Cleveland and simultaneously the Garden

Club of America I had no idea about all of the wonderful

things that they do. Therefore, my advice to all is to get

more involved - take a job if asked, become a hostess for a

meeting, identify a programming opportunity - this is truly a

great organization - learn more about it and you will be

inspired!

Quailcrest Farm

Fieldtrip

Wednesday, April 27th dawned

bright and sunny and cold, but

Provisionals were not deterred

from plans to drive an hour

south to Quailcrest Farm, in

Wooster, Ohio, where a treasure

trove of wonderful plants were found.

Outside were woodland rarities, from polygonatum humilis,

to trillium, to Hepatica, and many more very cool varieties

to add to any woodland setting. Other perennials, shrubs,

trees, cement troughs and other garden items were arranged,

and it didn’t take long to see that there were many specialty

plants which are typically hard to find.

Of course, Astilbe ‘purple rain’ was a hit, as were tree peonies

of many colors, and a there was yellow magnolia that seemed

to be calling my name….I wonder if I could keep it alive here

in Chesterland?

Inside were lots of gift items, as well as a greenhouse with

annuals, more perennials, herbs of every type, scented

geraniums of every fragrance, troughs, baskets, and much,

much more!

We had no trouble spending several hours perusing the aisles

and selecting many gems for our collective gardens…

Outside there are easily a dozen small gardens to explore, alt-

hough quite a few plants in the ground were still dormant.

There is a pavilion and a gallery, where groups can gather for

a picnic lunch, so we had a bite in the gallery, and celebrat-

ed CeCe’s birthday before heading back to our cars to head

home.

Happy happy Springtime to all!

Deb Fitzgerald

Event Co-Chairs Lynn and Reg Shiverick

Hilary Colvin, Susan Berchek, Marion Murfey, Nancy McGuinness,

and Suzanne Smythe are all smiles after a wonderful night!

Holden Arboretum’s

Woodland Twilight - July 9th

The Woodlands Twilight event on July 9th was a big success! Many kudos go to Lynn & Reg

Shiverick for being this year's chairs, and to Hillary Colvin & Linda Chittock for heading up the

decorating committee. If you haven't been on the Canopy Walk or up the Emergent Tower at

Holden, they will be open all fall. Even though members can go on either on for free, you still

have to stop by the visitor center to get a ticket. Take the time to visit at least once - you won't

be disappointed!

Marion Murfey

Marion Murfey will be collecting corks at the September and October GCC Meetings!

The corks will be given to the organization "ReCork". They have planted some

9,000 cork trees, which are some of the best at cleaning the air. Also, they recycle the

corks they collect by grinding them up & using them to make soles for shoes for 3rd world

country people. Please donate real corks only! - no composites. If anyone else in our

club would be willing to assist me in this project, that would be great! Thanks, Marion
