We talk to Gem’s newly appointed Sales Director, Neil WillertonTell us about your job role.My primary position is to take Gems sales function forward into 2012 and beyond, consolidate exitingrelationships and look for new areas of opportunity, Gemhas a very experienced sales team and I’m very lucky tohave such a professional and enthusiastic team aroundme. I want to work alongside them to create a platformthat allows the wider teams to succeed and deliverexcellence for all our customers.

What do you hope to bring to the table that maydiffer to anything demonstrated before?Using my experience I’d like to provide a platform that oursales team can push on from, having spent 10 yearscategory managing the PC consumables area in the grocerysector I’d like to bring the same disciplines and sales outmentally that enables growth for both the vendor andretailer, as delivering the stock in full and on time is onlyhalf the story.

What challenges do you think 2012 will bring?2011 has been a tough year in the home entertainment andPC market place, the macro economic outlook for 2012 willcreate a challenging environment for distributors, vendorsand retailers alike.

In a flat/declining market you have to offer a genuine point of difference to succeed where ever you are in thesupply chain.

What do you see the positives are, working with Gem?We have some exciting plans for 2012 to really push Gem’spoint of difference and our focus will be on improving thesales out of our vendor and retailer partners by creatingnew routes to market and offering an end to end singlepoint of contact solution be that retail, e-tail or digital.

As I touched on earlier delivering a box is a given, creatingreal value for our partners is the aim in 2012 as it’s theonly way we will meet and overcome what will be aninteresting and challenging year for retail.

Xbox 360 maintains dominance in 20112011 was the biggest year in the Xbox 360's six yearhistory, Microsoft has revealed. During the company'skeynote address, the Redmond giant announced thatthe total worldwide sales for the console have nowtopped an impressive 66 million.

As well as selling 16 million Xbox 360 consolesaround the world during 2011, Microsoft alsomanaged to increase the Xbox Live membership from30 million to nearly 40 million active members duringthe year.

But the good news for Xbox didn't end there, with thenews that another ten million Kinect sensors shiftedworldwide during 2011, taking the total worldwideinstalled base to 18 million.

Keynote host Ryan Seacrest commented:

Ten years ago, if I were to walk up tosomebody in the street and say 'Xbox' to them, they'd probably give me a blank stare. But nowXbox is at the forefront of games andentertainment

The company also revealed that Xbox 360 was thetop-selling console in North America during 2011, and that almost 800,000 systems were sold on BlackFriday alone, making it one of the must-have gifts for Christmas.

"No compromise" Windows 8 shownMicrosoft also used the CES platform to deliver an update on its next generation Windows 8operating system.

Using the slick 'Metro'-style interface used on Xbox360 and Window Phones, Microsoft CEO SteveBallmer confidently described Windows 8 as a "nocompromise experience."

One of the most amazing phenomenain our business has been the way that theWindows PC has constantly changed andreinvented and spurred other technologyinnovations. Over 3 billion Windows PCs are inuse around the planet

Ballmer commented.

"People don't want to compromise. Nobody wants togive up on their desktop when they moved tonotebooks. We don't give up anything. With Windows8 we've re-imagined Windows. It will give a no-compromise experience."

One of the most striking elements of new lookWindows 8 is the new Start screen, with large tiles giving users shortcuts to useful applications. TheOS promises to be flexible enough to use acrossdevices as diverse as touch screen tablets, netbooks, laptops and traditional desktops systems withkeyboard and mouse.

A public beta for Windows 8 has been confirmed forFebruary, with the online Windows Store alsoopening across the world, allowing users to try out arange of apps.

Apps are what power the new experience inWindows 8, said Tami Reller, chief marketing officerfor Microsoft.

Microsoft has not officially confirmed a launch date for Windows 8, but it is expected to launch inlate 2012.

Sesame Street shows Kinect progressMicrosoft unveiled the next step in the evolution ofKinect at CES 2012, through the release of 'playfullearning experiences'.

Due for released on Xbox 360 later in the year, KinectSesame Street TV will allow users to physically andvocally impact TV shows through the advancedcapabilities of the Kinect sensor.

Players will interact with their favourite characters onscreen to help them with tasks, play in their worldand learn together.

Meanwhile Kinect Nat Geo TV "will transport kids and their families around the world to expand their knowledge while inspiring a sense of wonderand excitement."

Players will be able to literally “reach in and explore”,and engage, play and learn as their living room istransformed into an animal habitat.

Kinect for Xbox 360 is delivering anew kind of interactive learning experiencethat allows them to engage, interact and learnin entirely new ways

said Microsoft in a statement.

More Kinect Playful Learning products are expectedto join the line-up later in the year.

Xbox 360 growing as an entertainment platformThe continuing evolution of the Xbox 360 as an all-round entertainment system was underlined bynew data published at CES 2012.

The number of hours spent watching video content onXbox 360 increased 140 per cent year on year, whilethe number of people using entertainment apps onthe console rocketed by more than 50 per cent fromNovember to December alone.

Microsoft has also tied up new content partnerships with News Corp, Fox and IGN in the US,and now has more than 50 active and announcedpartnerships worldwide.

"More live TV and on-demand TV will be lighting upXbox 360 consoles around the globe this year,"promised Microsoft.

THE DARKNESS II

The long-awaited follow-up to 2K Games' multi-million selling shooter classic arrives this month, promising an exciting and unique brand of

demonic combat.

Set two years on from the 2007 original, leadcharacter Jackie Estacado is finding it hard torepress his latent supernatural powers in the wake ofhis girlfriend's death.

When an unprovoked attempt on his life spirals into afull-scale mob war, his near-death experiencecauses his dark forces to remerge, setting him on "ajourney to hell" as he unravels the mystery behind theattack and the motivations of The Darkness itself.

Developed by renowned shooter veterans DigitalExtreme, the big news about The Darkness II is itsexciting new 'Quad-Wielding' combat mechanics. These unique abilities allow players to not only slash,

The game features Paul Jenkins' (The IncredibleHulk, Wolverine and Hellblazer) "deep and twistedstorytelling". The stylistic violence is brought to lifethrough a stunning hand-painted graphic noir style, which "makes it feel like you're playing agraphic novel."

Elsewhere, the addition of the pick-up-and-play'Vendettas' mode promises to offer a fast-paced,violent and narrative online co-op experience that

takes place parallel to the single-player story. Playable for up to four friends, Vendettas lets players select one of four characters - each withtheir own unique Darkness weapon - and engage inteam-focused gameplay, set in a variety ofenvironments not found in the main story.
