THE FRENCH IN NORTH AMERICAJoseph M. Kooiker
History 140 Professor Arguello
Canada and the Iroquoia
When the French arrived in North America they used the Native Americans as allies
The French wanted to be able to have access to the fur and fish that was in the areas that they colonized so they bent to the Indian trading policies
Canada and the Iroquoia
The Iroquoia were hunters and gatherers
Most of the Indians of North Eastern America practiced this kind of economy
The French did not ally themselves with the Iroquoia because of their more southern home
But they would later violently disrupt the French colony
Canada and the Iroquoia
When the Indians first began to trade with the French they traded based on their cultural standards
The French would trade their goods including kettles and alcohol
The Indians began to drink heavily as well as adapt to a more Western lifestyle
Canada and the Iroquoia
Settlers would establish temporary camps
These camps would allow the French to meet more of the Indians
These settlers set their eyes on the delicious furs that the Indians would wear and which was not available in Europe
French America
Not only did the French colonize and settle the Canadian areas but they also moved into the Mississippi Valley and Louisiana
Although they controlled the most amount of land in North America they still depended on the Indians to defend their smaller numbers
French America
Most of the people who settled the new French colonies were allowed to hunt and fish freely
Many inhabitants had to pay taxes to the French government but they were not as much as the taxes in France
The government in New France had a very centralized form of authority
French America
The French settlements in New France were left much to their own devices because of some disappointment by the Crown of France
The French crown began to withdraw much of the French presence from the area
French America
The Indians began to become dependent on the goods that the French traders provided
Because of the French withdrawal from the region the Indians and the French colonists became very dependent on each other
