December 2016

We tend to think of Christmas as a

time of homecoming. It is a brief

respite from a world that is constant-

ly changing. Even the songs we hear

are the same ones we knew from

childhood!

But this Christmas is a season of change for Cindy

and I. And it begins a season of change for FPC as

well. We aren't sure where our change will lead us,

and you are in a similar spot (although it is great to

know that Alan Jackson will be with you in the im-

mediate future).

It strikes me that the first Christmas was a season of

change as well. Mary and Joseph were going to a town that was not their

own, she was about to have their first child, and every indication was that this

little one would bring more changes to their lives and this world than either of

them could imagine.

More than two thousand years later, we have all benefitted

from the changes that came into our world that first

Christmas. Among other things, that change has brought

hope, joy, love and peace to our world, even in times of

drastic change.

So, amid our goodbyes, amid the changes that we don't

welcome, let us also be aware that

great things come with changes and

uncertainty. They came that first

Christmas. And they can come this

season as well.

Cindy and I wish you all a Merry

Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We are excited to announce that we fi-

nally have a location for our Foster Kids

Clothing Closet. We hope to be able to

give out new clothing to all the kids

coming into care in emergency situa-

tions. We want to be able to provide

them with something new as they come

into a very scary time in their lives. Our

hope is to make them feel loved and

cared for ......... with that being said our

bible study groups have been collecting

new clothing for the closet. We would

love to get some donations of new

socks, underwear, coats, jeans, shirts,

shoes........ anything that a kid in an

emergency situation could use. Thank

you so much for your

thoughts and prayers

as we have been

working on getting

this closet up and

running for almost 2

years now.

We are celebrating the word and works

of the Lord every week in Sunday

School. In November, we spent time

with some of the great stories of the Old

Testament, courtesy of Max Lucado's

inspired The Story curriculum. We

learned about Ruth's faith, we watched

Saul's rise to power, and celebrated

young David's victory over Goliath. We

also had the opportunity to see an older

David, now a king, make mistakes, re-

pent, and write beautiful songs to the

Lord.

In December, we will take a brief break

from The Story and walk through Ad-

vent talking about the people present at

the Nativity: the angels, Mary, Joseph,

baby Jesus, and the Shepherds. Each

week, each child will complete a beauti-

ful Christmas tree ornament that will

remind the whole family of the "reason

for the season".

While we are doing these crafts, we are

looking for adult hands to help guide

little ones, so please let Alison Martin

know if you'd like to assist in the learn-

ing and the fun.

Finally, there will be no Sunday School

on either Christmas Day or New Year's

Day, to allow our amazing team of vol-

unteers to spend these special days with

their families.

Fruity Chocolate Almond Bark

Dark chocolate is high in antioxidants and can be lower in sugar than other treats. Add in a handful of nuts and this will satisfy any snacking cravings you may have. Just remember, cente-narians view sweets as celebratory foods. They are conscious about their decisions to indulge in sugar and eat it in moderation. Yield: 12-16 clusters

Ingredients 1 cup toasted almonds or pecans, coarsely chopped 1/2 cup dried cherries or chopped dried fruit, coarsely chopped 6 oz dark chocolate (60%-70%, or higher), finely chopped ¼ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp espresso powder, optional

Directions 1. In a medium bowl, toss together the almonds and the dried fruit. Line a baking sheet with waxed or parchment paper. 2. Melt the chocolate in the microwave on low power or until melted, but not thick. It may take from 1-2 minutes depending on the power of the micro-wave. Or use a double boiler to melt the chocolate. Stir in the fruit, nuts and cinnamon. Add espresso powder if de-sired. 3. Drop by teaspoonful for clusters, or pour onto parchment paper lined bak-ing pan and spread evenly. Refrigerate until firm and store in air tight contain-er in refrigerator. - See more at: https://www.bluezones.com/recipe/chocolate-almond-bark/#sthash.AYa5FKzF.dpuf

Miranda did not put adventure on her

Christmas list, but thanks to her eighty-

Joy tells Miranda that

Do This in Remembrance of Me

Page 5

The Communion Class for ages 4th

grade and up was so touching this

month. Pastor Stuart taught a lesson for

10 kids on what communion means and

why we do it. Some of these kids came

the following Sunday to church and

were able to partake with their parents

for the first time. A touching moment to

have gotten to share with these kids. Luke 22: 19-20 "And he took bread,

gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to

them, saying, 'This is my body given for

you; do this in remembrance of me.' In

the same way, after the supper he took

the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new

covenant in my blood, which is poured

out for you.'"

December means Christmas! We will

meet the first two Sundays in December

in which we will talk about the different

gifts we have and how we can use them

for Christ! Then we will have our Annual

Christmas Party which includes the fun

and exciting (and very competitive)

candy game.

I can't wait to post pictures of the youth

going nuts about bags of candy. Also we

will be working on some service projects

for the youth to be focusing on in the

community. We will not be meeting Dec.

25th or Jan. 1st due to the holidays

though. We hope and pray for a wonder-

ful Christmas and a safe New Year's

Day!! January 8th we will resume our

regular meeting times.

Our bible studies are wrapped up for

the year and we are looking forward to

starting fresh with the New Year. We

will be starting January 3rd with our

Tuesday evening group and January 4th

with our Wednesday morning groups.

Our new study is Look-

ing for Lovely by An-

nie Downs. Here is a

brief description of the

new study...

“As Christians, we are

not promised lives of

ease. Often it takes just

a small moment of

beauty to regain hope and continue on

when life is chaotic and unpredictable.

Only when we learn to spot the lovely in

the midst of hardship can we experience

the transcendent peace of God that

keeps us persevering when we want to

give up.”

“In this 7-session Bible study, Annie F.

Downs examines the ordinary people of

the Bible—fishermen, gardeners, wom-

en, soldiers—to reveal the moments

they found beauty in the darkest circum-

stances and hope in God’s timing. Be-

cause they trusted in this: He makes

everything beautiful in His time.”
