The FPC Newsletter 601 Pine Street Klamath Falls, Oregon 97601 July 2017 I'm a Life Diplomate of the American Psychotherapy Assn. Counseling has been a significant part of my over- all ministry for 40 years. One of the common issues for troubled clients is that she/he wants the answers "right now!" so that they can get on with their lives. The problem is that the client is not ready yet to discover, accept, and live with the essential in- formation that must be uncovered. Preliminary steps must be taken before the whole story can be revealed and absorbed. The same is true in our relationship to the Lord God. Poet Rainer Rilke counsels: "I want to beg you, as much as I can, dear sir, to be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live with them" (Second Guess- ing God). He goes on to counsel, "live everything:" Live the questions now to be prepared to live through the an- swers later on. There are times in each of our lives when we’re not ready to have God grant our request, or reveal the truth, even though we're convinced that we are. Just as the counselor must lead the client through the steps of recov- ery, so must God, sometimes, lead us (or the other person) through a series of steps and learnings, before He can answer our prayers. When I'm in that fix, I've learned to pray something along these lines: "Dear God, This is what I earnestly desire" (to be healed, to learn why this has happened, to fix the problem now .....). "But if I am not yet ready for Your answer, then sustain me during this time, keep me from ut- terly falling, strengthen my faith, and teach me what I must know in the in- terim so that I'll be prepared for your answer." Sometimes God answers quickly. Oth- er times, God will use the concerning problem to also strengthen us, give us greater wisdom, deepen our faith, and/ or prepare us for some future task, which is part of our life's purpose to accomplish, according to His will. In that last part, however painful or frus- trating the experience was, I have nev- er been disappointed in the end. In fact, there are even times when, in hindsight, we pray, "Thank you for not answering my prayer." Pastor George Nye

July 2017

I'm a Life Diplomate of the American Psychotherapy Assn. Counseling has been a significant part of my over-all ministry for 40 years.

One of the common issues for troubled clients is that she/he wants the answers "right now!" so that they can get on with their lives. The problem is that the client is not ready yet to discover, accept, and live with the essential in-formation that must be uncovered.

Do not now seek the answers which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live with them" (Second Guess-ing God). He goes on to counsel, "live everything:" Live the questions now to be prepared to live through the an-swers later on.

There are times in each of our lives when we’re not ready to have God

grant our request, or reveal the truth, even though we're convinced that we are. Just as the counselor must lead the client through the steps of recov-ery, so must God, sometimes, lead us (or the other person) through a series of steps and learnings, before He can answer our prayers. When I'm in that fix, I've learned to pray something along these lines: "Dear God, This is what I earnestly desire" (to be healed, to learn why this has happened, to fix the problem now.....). "But if I am not yet ready for Your answer, then sustain me during this time, keep me from ut-terly falling, strengthen my faith, and teach me what I must know in the in-terim so that I'll be prepared for your answer."

Sometimes God answers quickly. Oth-er times, God will use the concerning problem to also strengthen us, give us greater wisdom, deepen our faith, and/or prepare us for some future task, which is part of our life's purpose to accomplish, according to His will. In that last part, however painful or frus-trating the experience was, I have nev-er been disappointed in the end. In fact, there are even times when, in hindsight, we pray, "Thank you for not answering my prayer." Pastor George Nye

entire months of CANDY Bible lessons! Can you imagine that much candy? Me either! Every

week we took a candy and related it to a story in the Bible.

We compared how Lazarus' day was a lot like Sour Patch Kids, first it was sour then Jesus made it sweet. Kids were able to share the message with their friends at school in a relatable way. Was so amazing to watch!

Huge SHOUT OUT to Scott Dickson for lend-ing us his giant cotton candy machine and making 65+ bags of cotton candy for the kids to take home on their last CandyLand Adventure party day!

Thank you Don and Sherrill Boyd for coming several times and sitting with the kids during their dinners engaging them in sweet conversations and helping clean up.

We couldn't do it without everyone's help! Thank you Katie Mengis, Karli Fussell, Randy Clark, Scott Senter, Valerie Brown, Payton Mengis, Courtney Rosario, Belinda Scalas, Doug and Grace Barnes, Belinda Reno, Tammie Williams, SWAG Kids and so many more for all your help!!!!

On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the church door in Wittenberg. This was a prominent event in the Reformation; a period of history that would have a major impact on Western history. The Protestant Reformation spelled out time-less truths about God’s Word, our salva-tion and the role of the Church. The im-pact can be seen not only on Christianity and the eventual founding of the Presby-terian Church, but on our culture and government.

You are encouraged to spend part of an afternoon learning about this exciting pe-riod. There are many fine resources avail-able on the lives of a couple of the re-formers, A Martin Luther and John Cal-vin. Wikipedia has some good material and movies can be found on the History Channel.

We are benefactors of a rich heritage that has proclaimed the truths of the Bible. Rejoice and be glad in it.

Missions: Mentor One Child, Change Two Lives

Citizens For Safe Schools is in search of compassionate and posi-tive adult role models to help support and culti-vate character in at-risk Klamath Youth. For only one hour a week, you can change the life of a child in need with-in our community. Spend time simply “hanging out”; going bowling, going for a walk, riding bikes, checking out a muse-um… the possibilities are endless! The dependable, enduring presence of a sup-portive adult in a young person’s life fos-ters improvement with academics, social skills, attachment, and develops potential for future achievement. We have many children waiting to be matched! Meet two now:

Jason is 8 and goes to Henley Elementary. He says, “I love to paint, draw and sing! Soccer is my favorite sport. I love camp-ing and playing in the water. I always want to help people and see people happy. I think I want to become a baker, race car driver or a doctor after school.” His coun-selor says, “Jason would benefit greatly by having a strong, positive role model. He needs a friend he can trust who will listen and help guide him through coping with loss.”

Danielle is 11 and goes to Ponderosa. She says, “I like people who are nice and can laugh with me! I love walking dogs, swimming, playing with animals, and eat-ing ice cream! I think I would like to go hiking, swimming, or rock climbing with my mentor.” Her counselor comments; “Danielle is a sweet girl who has experi-enced many transitions with no consistent adults in her life. She could use a fun and inspirational mentor. She responds well to

2nd Annual Father Daughter Dance

What a magical night June 16th was! Over 100 people danced the night away in the Lord’s house! Out of 60 Dads about 7 of them were from FPC! God blessed this OUT-REACH event beyond

our biggest hopes and dreams!

Every Dad and daughter there heard the gospel message! Seeds were planted!

We asked the couples to bring a pair of shoes to donate in order to attend, and we ended up with a mountain of BRAND NEW shoes! God is so good!

There was so much food, photos, danc-ing lessons and fun had for the whole two and a half hours. Relix Photography gave us beautiful couple photos! Jacob Slinker helped us set up, helped with sound and gladly came to the event and took action shots of dancing. Paola Westfall, a fantastic Salsa and Tango teacher, gave everyone tons of dancing lessons.

"Let them praise His name with dance!" Psalm 149:3. By Austyn Weems

Go the Distance! We are so excited for the warm sunshine to make its grand appearance! Summer is here and that means: Vacation Bible School is almost here! We are headed to Moore Park this year for round two of Sports Camp from July 24th-27th, from 9:00 a.m. thru 12:00 p.m. "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you." Psalm 32:8. Don't get discouraged because "The Great Comeback" is headed our way (John 14:1-3). Join us and learn how to be undefeated champions in Jesus Christ!

There is a little story

About two little feet

That went walking to the bank

On a very hot, hot street.

They were wearing flip flops,

And then splat and plop, one broke!

So at the bank they gave them tape

To put in just the right spot.

So, with a skip and a hop,

Maybe a jump and a flop,

On the way back to work,

Again they broke, broke, broke!

But alas, the story ends well

About the two little feet

As they made it back from the bank

On a very hot, hot street!

Session Summary

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faith-ful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10

Physical Resource Committee thanks those who came to the June 24 Work Party—Jackie Clark, Rich Touslee, Scott Senter and Anne Weaver, as well as thanking those who worked before that day on multi-stage projects and are con-tinuing on those projects—Jim Stewart, Jeff Newsom, Don Boyd and Ron Cox.

The Fellowship Hall windows were cleaned inside and outside, plastering and painting at the back of the Sanctuary was done as well as the Fireside Room & Lounge painted by Heather & Austyn, petunias were planted by Don and Nancy Boyd and filters were replaced for the heating and cooling system and a few other small jobs.

I want to be a worker for the Lord, I want to love and trust his Holy Word; I want to sing and pray, and be busy everyday In the vineyard of the Lord.

I will work, (and pray,) I will pray, (and work,) In the vineyard , in the vineyard of the Lord, (of the Lord;) I will work, I will pray, I will labor every day In the vineyard of the Lord.

Your Church Session met at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night and the meeting lasted un-til 10:00 p.m. That alone should be an in-dication of the dedication of these folks. Three folks that were not Session Mem-bers visited for part of the meeting. Visi-tors were Tim Bartlett and Jake Weems and came to share concerns about the pro-grams for children and youth and Bill Kennedy came to share in the discussion of our “Heart of the City Projects”. The meeting opened with prayer followed by the devotion by Clerk of Session Thel-ma Cox.

The agenda was approved with a change from Keith Stone, on a Personnel matter and one we spent time listening to the con-cerns about the Children’s and Youth Pro-grams, and agreed that some of the con-cerns that we shared, but during this inter-im period, we are not doing much to estab-lish anything new until the new Pastor is here to guide us. The two were assured that there were no plans to change things, though there would be some refinements in job descriptions in the near future.

We looked at the report about how we can move forward into the community, how we could be the true “Heart of the City”. These plans will continue to evolve as the summer and Fall progress. Any with ideas are encouraged to contact Gay Woods. We will have “Minute for Mission” speakers several times over the next months to help us see how and where we are involved. Again, if you have ideas, see Gay Woods.

The PNC reported that they have inter-viewed candidates and are doing all the necessary reference checking and other background work on some. More applica-tions are being received. Some of the

candidates are truly exciting. Please con-tinue to pray for that person, God knows who they are, that will soon be our Shep-herd.

There was a discussion about filling the vacant Deacon’s positions. They will be filled soon. The new Elders and Deacons will be installed July 9th.

There was a discussion about the need for well-trained ushers, not just folks snagged on Sunday, but people who understand the full scope of the service they give the congregation. Volunteers are being sought so that a cadre of folks, both men and women can be trained to assist in our Worship services.

A request for Elders to sign up to be Elder of the Day was made.

There are new cameras in the Sunday School Rooms, thanks to all those who helped with installation. There will be 2 cameras outside also. Because of the out-side cameras we received a $500 grant from the City Police. Thanks to them, thanks to Keith Stone for his oversight and thanks to Heather Bartlett for finding out about the grant and following through.

Summer Worship schedule: Starting on 6/25/2017 there will be one 10:00 a.m. service, with features of both the Praise service and the Traditional service. This service format will continue through Labor Day weekend.

There was a discussion about the supervi-sion and oversight of the Endowment Fund which is invested in the Community Fund. The Finance Committee needs to be aware of what is there. The Endow-ment Committee is in charge of determin-ing how any excess earnings are spent.

Session Summary

This will be a continuing discussion as we become used to the way the Community Fund operates.

The next Session meeting will be on the 4th Thursday of each month through Sep-tember to avoid conflicts with the Third Thursday activities.

We were dismissed with prayer.

A special THANK YOU goes out to Thelma Cox, who has been a devoted Clerk of Session for several years. If you see her, thank her because she has been a miracle worker during these past few months keeping everything “Decently and in Order”.

Gay Woods will be the new Clerk of Ses-sion.
