Haileybury College Study Tour
Last week I was joined by 9 teachers from Proserpine StateSchool in participating in Haileybury College 2017 PrimaryTeachers Seminar. Regular readers of our newsletter will beaware that we are engaging the educational expertise of MrJohn Fleming to implement Explicit Instruction as our teachingand learning framework. Mr Fleming is the Deputy Principalof Teaching and Learning at Haileybury College. HaileyburyCollege is a non-selective private school in Melbourne with over4 000 students across the four Melbourne campuses (Brighton,Keysborough, Berwick, City) and one China Campus.
Recent Retirements
I would like to acknowledge staff members who have retired inthe last few weeks –
Mrs Lorraine Webb has retired from her rolein the office. I would like to thank Lorrainefor her years of dedicated service inensuring our school operates smoothly. Herrole was often the link between thecommunity and school which she did sowonderfully.
Mrs Mary Franklin has retired from theeducation department in the role of Principal at Queens BeachState School. Before relocating to Queens Beach State School,Mary was a Deputy Principal at Proserpine State School. I havebeen informed on many occasions of Mary’s skills in supportingstudents with complex behaviours and needs. She has made asignificant difference to many students’ lives.
I wish both Lorraine and Mary a happy, safe and enjoyableretirement!

NAPLAN
Congratulations to our Year 3 and 5 students for their positiveapproach to NAPLAN testing a couple of weeks ago. Theyhave showed great resilience and persistence over the week.Based on the attendance data it appears that we may have98% of students sit the testing this year which is an outstandingachievement. 98% of students participating in NAPLAN meansthat the data / results collected gives a true indication of ourschool’s student learning.

Thank you to teachers for the very smooth implementation ofthe tests and supporting students in preparing, academicallyand emotionally. These tests are considered a test in time withvaluable data that enhances or assessment policy, with nopressure on students except to do their best and show whatthey can do as in any other test. Thank you also to parentsfor supporting the school and their child/ren during this testingprocess.
We have had a few queries as to when NAPLAN results will beavailable to parents. Please be advised that schools receive thisinformation in July/August. At this time parents will receive theirchild’s individual NAPLAN report which will highlight how wellthey have achieved against students in their year level withineach of the domains tested. Please do not hesitate to contactme if you require any further information re NAPLAN.
Big Morning Out

Student Attendance – Everyday Counts -
Thank you to those families who always inform the school ofa child’s absence. However, on returning this term, we havehad more frequent high absence rates. A reminder to parentsand carers to always inform the school when a student willbe absent. The easiest way to do this is by using our schoolphone absence line, call the school on 4940 6333 and followthe prompt to leave an absence notification on the absence lineor via your Q Parent App. This is followed up each morning byadmin office staff.
All unexplained absences are followed up at our school bysending via ID Attend absence notifications through textmessages. If this happens parents are then required to replyexplaining why the student is absent which is then amendedto an explained absence. Forms are also mailed out in regardto the unauthorised student days absent to those families wehave not had a response from. They require a reason attachedto absence dates. These forms are to be filled in and returnedto the school office where they are then recorded as explainedabsences.
I have included a link to a parent fact sheet on attendanceprovided by Education Queensland as well as a document thathighlights the impact of student absences on a child’s years ofeducation. It is a pleasure each week on assembly to announcethe class with the highest attendance rate and see how it isvalued by students.
If you would like any further information on student attendance, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

In the week before Mothers Day, 1DB was a hive of activity asfathers and grandfathers arrived with their tools and gave uptheir time to help 1DB to design and create their Mothers Daypresents, of wonderful wind chimes.
Please see below for photos and excerpts from the students’writing about their experiences.

Curriculum Matters
Haileybury Visit
Last week, I was fortunate to attendProfessional Learning in Melbourne at twoof the four Haileybury Campuses. Whilst MrTempleton has written about theeducational outcomes and pedagogiesobserved, may I say that I observed that ourstudents were equally on par in terms of positive behaviours, wearing their uniform proudly and being focussed learners.
The things that I learned on the visit have already been includedin my, and other teachers’, Reading Hierarchy and other literacyand English lessons. As is everything that we do at ProserpineState School, it is for the betterment of our students and theirlearning.
Report Cards
Due to TC Debbie Report Cards will be issued week two termthree. There will also be instances in year levels where someratings will be dependent on a reduced number of assessmentpieces due to loss of time and resources. This is especially trueof student in Year 3.
Please keep in mind that a ‘C’ rating means that your childis working at the standard expected at this stage of her/hiseducation. Whilst we encourage every student to strive toachieve, and love to see ‘B’ and ‘A’ ratings, we also understandthat a child working to the best of her/his ability is the most
desired outcome in any school. If you have any concerns, and have not met with your child’s class, support or specialistteachers, I encourage you to make an appointment as soon aspossible, prior to Week 10.
WOS Writing Focus
This term, every student is learning about expository writing i.e.persuasive. All students are:
Every student will be writing a persuasive text in English as anassessment task. Some are in the form of letters, whilst othersare more formal essays. Do you know what task your child isundertaking?

Positive Behaviour for Learning
This week I have been talking to seniorschool boys about low-level but persistentbehaviours – pushing, hat-taking, standingon feet, flicking etc. Although thesebehaviours do not appear to be harmful, theymost certainly are. The student on thereceiving end often gets frustrated or annoyed and retaliateswith a hit or push which is replied with a harder hit or push untilsomeone is hurt or upset. As these behaviours often occur onthe oval during a game, students are reluctant to use the walkpart of the STOP WALK TALK because they have to walk awayfrom a game that was being spoiled by someone else.
• The Great Barrier Reef is the world’slargest reef system.
• The Great Barrier Reef is greater insize than the United Kingdom, Hollandand Switzerland combined.
• using the acronym UDACO to recall key vocabulary(undoubtedly, definitely, absolutely, certainly, obviously),
• including emotive words and high modality in theirwriting to influence readers,
• brainstorming arguments for and against topics usingSHEF (social, health, environmental, financial)
4
In order to empower students who simply want to play thegame but are being annoyed by the irritant, we are encouragingstudents to; in the first instance assertively ask them to stopand not to retaliate. If another attempt is made to annoy, students are to report to the staff member on duty. All staffmembers have been informed that students who persist withthese annoying behaviours are to be removed from the gameor area. Removing them from where they are seeking attentionwill hopefully assist them in changing their behaviour.
