On Thursday the 1st of November we were scheduled to play Carlingford High School in league 7s. In the past few years Galston High School has dominated the sport while also maintaining lots of respect for our opponents. We are currently undefeated this season and were playing a team that consisted of some new players and had not won a game all season.

We adjusted our playing style so the opposition did not get hurt or feel too demoralised. Upon completion of the game we congratulated each other and felt good that both teams left with their heads held high.

By Liam McKenzie

Here is what one of the parents of an opposition player had to say:

I am a parent of a Year 11 student at Carlingford High School. I felt the need to let you know that the conduct of your under 15's Rugby League Team yesterday at North Rocks Park was exemplary. They competed against the Carlingford side that was full of very small boys who are trying rugby league for the first time. The Galston side was full of strong young men, many I have seen play in weekend and representative teams.

By using a less aggressive tackling style, combined with running around players and shape passing rather than running over the smaller less experience Carlingford side, Galston was able to win comfortably and leave the opposition with some dignity and more importantly alive.

All the players and the coach should be commended for their sportsmanship.

To have all the power and not use it, is true strength.

We have been thrilled and excited to hear of Galston High School's Hannah West and her achievement in being nominated for possible inclusion in ArtExpress 2019. Her drawing The Fears That Control Us has been put aside as an exemplar of high achievement in Visual Arts.

It is a great achievement to be nominated for possible inclusion with the process now requiring curators to select which works will hang in galleries across the state. Hannah's body of work is not only a representation of hours of work across Year 12, but the years she has spent cultivating her drawing skills from an early age to ensure she would achieve her personal best.

Prefect Report...

This week at Galston High School, Year 9 students recently took part in their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, completing their test walk in Wollongong. They had a great two day walk enjoying the oceanfront views and coastal breezes.

On Friday 23rd of November, the school musical auditions were held and the talent of each student was stellar. We are looking forward to see their talents during our 2019 production of The Wizard of Oz. Today also saw our Year 11 students undertake their Young Endeavour Interviews and the successful participants will be announced on the 4th of December, at our school’s Presentation Night. They will be excited and eager, looking forward to the big opportunities and experiences that lie ahead.

TAS Faculty Focus...

As the Christmas holidays fast approach, our students continue to work hard.

Year 11 Hospitality students have just recently completed their second and final work placement at various locations. Establishments included the Novotel Darling Harbour, Radisson Hotel Sydney, Norwest Private Hospital, Vintage Pantry Galston and the Little Rock Café Baulkham Hills. Students

undertook various tasks including food preparation, making sandwiches and salads, short order cooking and cleaning duties. Feedback on the 11 students who undertook their final placements was very positive. Meanwhile Year 12 Hospitality students are to be commended on completing their Certificate II in Kitchen Operations. This nationally recognised qualification provides a wonderful platform for those wishing to enter the

Hospitality Industry.

At the same time Year 12 Construction students are also to be congratulated on completing their Certificate II in Construction pathways. This too, being a nationally recognised qualification, will provide a wonderful step forward for those entering trade courses. Year 11 students are successfully filling the footsteps of their predecessors in not only achieving competencies but

continuing the redevelopment of the TAS quadrangle. The redevelopment has also involved students from the Smart Link class. Great teamwork has been evident between the classes. Students have partaken in carpentry skills, levelling and have utilised aggregate and geotextiles during this project.

Next week, Stage 6 Engineering Studies students will be testing their balsa truss bridges to the point of destruction. Competition is bound to be strong as students compete against each other, testing their designs in terms of which structure will support the heaviest load.

Year 11 Industrial Technology classes have begun the long journey of designing and constructing major projects for 2019. Manufacturing has commenced with students undertaking various pieces of furniture and timber products. Projects include a bed, timber slab coffee tables, desk and bar, kitchen blocks and island and entertainment units.

Community and Family studies students are planning their Independent Research Projects for upcoming Higher School

Certificate requirements. Students will be required to submit their plans to their teacher next week. Last year areas of research included, how dyslexia influences individuals going through adolescence, does Instagram promote eating disorders in teenage girls in the Hills shire area, and the affect that the Higher School Certificate has on the well-being of students.

Year 9 & 10 Industrial Technology students are in the finishing stages of completing their BBQs and Galvanized Tool Boxes. Excellent fabrication skills have been displayed by our students. Timber pendulum wall clock cabinets will also be soon furnishing the homes of our students.

Cake decorating skills of our Year 9 Food technology students have been outstanding in recent weeks. Vibrant colours and icing techniques have been in abundance as student have created their own marvellous creations.

Also in the commercial kitchen, Ginger bread houses made by our Year 10 Food Technology students have exhibited

incredible attention to detail. These professionally presented master pieces would certainly be at home in any respected patisserie.Currently Stage 4 Technology students are demonstrating their creative flair in constructing pyjamas, metal candle holders, timber treasure boxes and pencil cases. Meanwhile our Technology and Applied Studies teachers are amidst programming for the new Technology Mandatory syllabus that will be implemented in 2019. New areas of study will include Food and Agriculture, Engineered Systems and Digital Technologies. As part of the preparation for Food and Agriculture our Hub students have been trialling the cultivation of herbs and tracking their growth rates. The development of prototypes including coded light displays and spinning turbine candle holders are also part of getting ready for the new course.

In a closing remark, the Technology and Applied Studies Faculty wish our Year 12 students the very best as they await their Higher school Certificate results.
