For the last quarter of the year we have an impressive line-up of bands to suit all tastes; a few newcomers and some old favourites which we hope you will enjoy. New to us. The Panama Jazz Band. 4th October

This band is made up of musicians from the Bristol and South Wales area and has played at all the top venues in the area; and even, twice a year, go abroad to Brittany and Northern Spain playing on the ferry. The line-up for their visit to Café Jazz will be:- Tom Doughty (trumpet), Peter Ward (trombone), John Davies (clarinet) (our regular clt player cannot make it), Alan Hogg banjo/guitar) Mike Pincombe drums, and Keith Tolley (bass)

From Sweden The Jelly Babies Jazz Band 25th October We sometimes get some Swedish people in the audience; I hope they will come for this event. From the Band’s website:- “Jelly Babies” associates to a mix of sweets. The name, however, was in the early days of the band more a tribute to the legendary New Orleans piano player Jelly Roll Morton, who in the late years of 1800 appointed himself “the founder of jazz”. Today, Jelly Babies plays the happy jazz and swing mainly from the 20´s and 30´s but also from the “Big American Songbook”. The orchestra was founded in year 2000 and has played at many of the renowned jazz clubs in Stockholm. We have also played at many jazz festivals, private parties and commercial activities. Since 2008 we have yearly made concert tours in England, playing at a number of jazz clubs in the Midlands. All musicians are well known from many Stockholm jazz bands.” The Musicians: Trumpet: Bent Persson Trombone: Kaj Sifvert Clarinet: Hasse Sporre Sop.sax: Ulf Dreber Piano: Pelle Larsson Banjo: Claes Grönberg Double Bass: Hans Nyman Drums: Per Lilliehöök Vocals and Crooner: Per-Arne Lindholm

A late replacement in the trumpet chair is Bent Persson, as their original trumpeter was unable to come – those old enough to remember early Brecon Jazz festivals will remember Bent when he played in the centre of Brecon to a massive crowd playing numerous Louis Armstrong numbers with the European Jazz Band.

The 3rd Riverside Reunion 15th November The Riverside was formed in 1975 and the line up since approx 1980 remained the same for nearly 20 years when the band decided to “disband” in 1999. Fortunately all the members of the Band are still alive and kicking and as Pete Locke put it “It would be nice to do a reunion gig whilst we can” Both Norman Partridge and myself no longer play as such but will be there on the night – maybe a little pressure will be applied for a vocal or two from Norman. As Norman and I made up the front line we have two very good friends of the band who have helped out in the past. Gwyn Lewis is flying in for the gig from Stockholm and John Scantlebury will be jetting in from Cardiff. So the line-up will be Pete Locke, Gwyn Lewis, John Scantlebury, Vic Partridge, Mike Gale and Mike Pearce. We hope you’ll come along and support us and make it as enjoyable as Reunion 1 and 2. Will there be a 4th ????

Note the difference between then (circa 1980) and now! – We ALL had hair
