Dear Friends,

Certainly among the most powerful and practical and

challenging words of Jesus are found in Matthew’s

Gospel where he says, “For I was hungry and you

gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me

something to drink, I was a stranger and you

welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of

me, I was in prison and you visited you… Truly as you did it to one of the least of these

who are members of my family, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:35-36, 40) These words came to mind in a particular way last week. But first a little background:

One day last spring our confirmation youth gathered at Hope Haven to assemble, cook

and serve a meal the residents there. (By the way, we plan to do so again on February

8th.) The kids did well. People seemed to enjoy the meal --- some of them even coming

back for seconds. We even managed to get things cleaned up and left in pretty good

order. Here is what surprised me though. We ran out of forks. In fact, I learned later

that it is an expected part of the routine that forks have to be washed and dried halfway

through to ensure that everyone has access to a clean utensil.

Now there seem to be plenty of knives and spoons, so certainly one might wonder

about the location of the wayward forks. I can’t say for sure, of course, but I imagine

that a number of them find their way into purses and pockets. People simply take them

with them --- perhaps hiding them away to be used should they find themselves out on

the street again. And one really can’t blame them. And so last spring I kept my eyes open and one day when I wandered into Good Will I

was excited to see they had forks. I sifted through the boxes of silverware and one by

one pulled out the forks and bought every last one of them. I double bagged them and

took it over to Hope Haven later that week. I don’t know about you, but I take forks for

granted.

Last week, I sat down with Lesly Wicks, the long-time director of Hope Haven. I

learned they were running short on forks again. Even more distressing to me, though,

was learning that they are having to ration toilet paper. I don’t know, and I don’t think I

even want to imagine what rationing toilet paper looks like, but again ---- the most

vulnerable among us are having to do without something I normally take for granted.

Forks and toilet paper --- both of which speak so much to basic human dignity. Forks

and toilet paper ---and probably a whole lot of other things I haven’t begun to consider!

So I offer you now an invitation. During February would you join me in bringing toilet

paper to church? Wouldn’t it be great if we could cover the front of our worship space

with toilet paper? And if you happen to be out thrift shopping --- in February or at any

time --- would you keep your eye open for forks? (They prefer not to use the plastic

ones --- just in interest of protecting the environment, at the very least --- but also

because there is a certain dignity offered when one uses real silverware.) If you find

forks would you bring them to church as well?

Your gifts will be gratefully received all of February. Forks and Toilet Paper. Indeed,

in a world where we often can’t tell how we can make a difference, this one seems

obvious. Won’t you join me? Indeed, I am confident that even in this small effort, we

are actually doing this for Jesus whom we meet again and again in those who need us

most of all.

Peace to you,

From the Pastor Page 2

Thanksgiving Continues With Caring Meals

Did you enjoy First Lutheran's Thanksgiving dinner with 130 others? It was a

wonderful feast of turkey and ham plus multiple gourmet sides and desserts

provided by attendees.

I just read the phenomenal numbers of food that U.S. households throw away

each year. NOT First Lutherans!! Many thanks to Bill and Lee Todtz for

cooking and saving the Thanksgiving ham and turkey leftovers. Barney and

Carol Schroeder and Mike and Sharon Wadle bagged the left over meat

pieces and boiled and removed the turkey from the bones. The results —

nine - 2 cup packages of ham, 20 - 2 cup packages of chicken, six 1/2 gallon

containers and 13 quart containers of turkey broth. These pieces and the broth

were frozen for making healthy Caring Meals, Hope Haven main dishes, and

soups for people needing support and love in 2017.

Do you have a recipe for using these ham/turkey pieces? Would you like to

make a dish, soup, or ______? Do you or someone you know need a Caring Meal? Please contact Cathy Foelske, Parish Nurse, or the Church Office so

First can provide a meal from our abundance, culinary gifts and love.

“R” Mission Center needs You!

Your hands—along with rest of you—are needed to do God’s work on the

first and third Wednesday of every month to make quilts for Lutheran World

Relief! No, you don’t have to know a thing about quilting. If you do, that’s

great, too. Just show up!

This month we will meet on Feb. 1 and 15. You can also sew Love Packets,

available at the R Donation Center in the atrium. Easy instructions are

included for making a quilt top. Another way to help is by donating yard

goods. Again, look for the basket in the Atrium.

Plans are underway for other LWR projects through the year, including a soap

collection and items for personal care, baby care, and school kits.

We also welcome cash for shipping, or other needed quilting materials:

New fabric (yard goods of any size)

Drapes and curtains (no sheers or fiberglass)

Blankets, bedspreads, mattress pads, sheets, pillowcases

Quilt batting

Good quality sewing thread

Crochet or similar cord for tying

It’s important that all of these items be clean and in good condition. Please

leave donations in the basket in the Atrium. Thank you

CAC Makumira Update

Once upon a time Randy Stubbs told a

story about a Cultural Arts Centre at

Makumira University in Tanzania, where

Randy, Carol, Marissa, Megan, and

Nathan had been living, teaching, and

learning for 10 years. At that time, the

CAC was more of an “idea” than a

reality. A little later, Jim and Colleen

Johnson told the story. Then several other

First folks started telling the story. Then

some of those who had heard the

story opened their hearts and wallets in

support of turning the “idea” into a living

and growing “mission of changing

lives.” $24,525 was sent on September

21, then $23,390 on December 28, and

$24,840 on January 26. $72,805 will be

matched 1.5 times by a European Union

Grant, for a grand total of

$182,012. Makumira University’s music

students and graduates will be employed

as teachers and performers, bringing their

families and communities out of

poverty. Now that’s a story worth telling!

Asante sana! CAC Coordinators

Overcoming a Fitness Plateau submitted by Cathy Foelske, R.N.

Hitting a fitness plateau can be frustrating, but it is a

positive sign that you are making progress in your

fitness level be it walking, swimming, jogging, or

biking. Now it’s time to take it to the next level.

GET F.I.T.T.: you can overcome a plateau and

change up your workouts by following the F.I.T.T.

principle of exercise. F.I.T.T. stands for Frequency, Intensity, Time, and

Type. As you get in better shape, you will have to continue to increase your

intensity to get into the appropriate target heart-rate range: FREQUENCY:

how often like 3-5 days a week. INTENSITY: (how hard) 65-90% of heart

rate max, or within the target heart rate for your age. (about 220 beats per

minute minus your age) TIME: (how long) 20-60 minutes per session; 150

minutes per week. TYPE: (what exercise) walking, jogging, running, biking,

swimming, etc. Change it up: Beyond F.I.T.T., simply adding variety to your

workout will help you overcome a plateau. Aerobic activities should always

make up the biggest chunk of your workout, but you should also include

muscle-strengthening activities, such as working out with weights or resistance

bands. Cross training, which means doing a variety of different exercises is

another way to keep exercise boredom at bay. Cross training also reduces the

risk of injury or overusing one specific muscle or joint.

opportunity to participate in the processing of

donated quilts and kits for overseas shipment.

This important mission of our Lutheran churches

helps bring relief to oppressed and distressed

people around the globe. During the week, time is also given to help at the

SERRV International Warehouse helping unpack and process third world

artistic works and fair-trade goods for distribution and sale in the United

States. This week of learning, sightseeing, and helping with our church’s

mission at the national/international level is rewarding and faith building.

Dennis and Bev Heaney (815-748-7124) will again coordinate the trip and

invite your questions and participation. Registration is limited to 16 adults so
