*Hymn 253 OCome,AllYeFaithful– Adeste Fideles
O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphantO come, ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold him, born the King of angels;
O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord!
Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation,Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!Glory to God, all glory in the highest;
O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord!
Yea, Lord we greet thee, born this happy morning,Jesus, to thee be all glory given;
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing;
O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord!

ChristmasBeatitudes–David Rhys Williams
For this blessed season let us worship at the altar of joy, for to miss the joy of Christmas is to miss its holiest secret. Letusenterintothespiritualdelightswhicharethenaturalheritageofchildlikehearts.Let us withdraw from the cold and barren world of prosaic fact, if only for a season: Thatwemaywarmourselvesbythefiresideoffancy,andtakecounselinthewisdomofpoetryandlegend.Blessed are they who have vision enough to behold a guiding star in the dark mysterywhich girdles the earth; Blessedaretheywhohaveimaginationenoughtodetectthemusicofcelestialvoicesinthemidnighthoursoflife;Blessed are they who have faith enough to contemplate a world of peace and justice in the midst of present wrong and strife; Blessedaretheywhohavegreatnessenoughtobecomeaslittlechildren;Blessed are they who have zest enough to take delight in simple things; Blessedaretheywhohavewisdomenoughtoknowthatthekingdomofheavenisveryclose athand,andthatallmayenterinwhohaveeyestoseeandearstohearandheartstounderstand.

Welcome and Announcements The Reverend John Buehrens *Reciting Our Congregational Covenant
*Hymn 241 IntheBleakMidwinter– Cranham
In the bleak midwinter frosty wind made moan,Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen snow on snow, snow on snow,In the bleak midwinter, long ago.
Christ a homeless stranger, so the gospels say,Cradled in a manger and a bed of hay;
In the bleak midwinter stable place sufficedMary and her baby, Jesus Christ.
Once more child and mother weave their magic spell,Touching hearts with wonder words can never tell;
In the bleak midwinter, in this world of pain,Where our hearts are open, love is born again.

Love is the spirit of this church, and service is its prayer. This is our great covenant: to dwell together in peace, to seek the truth in freedom, and to help one another.

*Hymn 244 ItCameUpontheMidnightClear– Carol
It came upon a midnight clear, that glorious song of old,from angels bending near to earth to touch their harps of gold.
“Peace on the earth, goodwill to you from heaven’s all gracious king.”The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.
Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled,and still their heavenly music floats o’er all the weary world.Above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing,
and ever o’er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing.
For lo the days are hastening on, by prophet bards foretold,when with the ever circling years comes round the age of gold.When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling,
and the whole world sends back the song, which now the angels sing.

Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright.Round yon virgin mother and child,
holy infant so tender and mild.Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight,Glories stream from heaven afar,
heavenly hosts sing, “Alleluia!”Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night, child of God, love’s pure light.Radiant beams from thy holy face,
with the dawn of redeeming grace.Sleep in heavenly peace

*Hymn 245 JoytotheWorld!– Antioch
Joy to the world! The Lord is come. Let earth receive her king;Let every heart prepare him room and heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing, and heaven and heaven and nature sing.
Joy to the earth! The savior reigns. Let all their tongues employ;While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains, repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
He rules the world with truth and grace and makes the nations provethe glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love,
And wonders of his love, and wonders, and wonders of his love.

Beginning Sunday, January 18 from 6PM to 7PM, Chapel
Church After Dark is a contemporary, experimental evening service beginning mid-January. We’ll be hosting a variety of acoustic musicians, some from within our church and some bringing their
talents from beyond our walls. The setting will be a simple, candle-lit service in the round where people are invited to participate in the whole service or simply rest in a contemplative, intimate atmosphere. The Church After Dark service is coordinated by Intern Minister Cindy Pincus ([email protected]).
