Psalm 51:1-14 Miserere mei, Deus setting: R.G. Lang

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness; in your great compassion blot out my offenses.Wash me through and through from my wickedness and cleanse me from my sin.For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.Against you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. Antiphon

And so you are justified when you speak and upright in your judgement.Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth, a sinner from my mother’s womb. For behold, you look for truth deep within me, and will make me understand wisdom secretly.Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure; wash me, and I shall be clean indeed. Apostles Creed Presider Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say,All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and isseated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the livingand the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the com-munion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving Presider The Lord be with you All and also with you.

Presider Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Presider Blessed are you gracious God, creator of heaven and earth, because you bid your faithful people to cleanse their hearts and to prepare with joy for the paschal feast; that reborn through the waters of baptism and renewed in the eucharistic mystery, we may be more fervent in prayer and more generous in the works of love. Therefore we raise our voices to you in praise to proclaim the glory of your name. Therefore with angels and archangels and all who have served you in every age, we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name.

Sanctus Choir (Missa Brevis) Leonard Bernstein

Presider We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you havemade known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in yourword spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh,Jesus your Son.For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary,to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered usfrom evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable inhim, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, andbring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters;through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of theChurch, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and inwhom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever.

During Communion O God Thou Art my God (Psalm 63) setting: Chris DeBlasio

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee,my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee. Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips: When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth. They shall fall by the sword: they shall be a portion for foxes. But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped. Amen.

Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share in

a prayer of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread andwine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station. Give your first name and in a low voice brieflystate your prayer need. The prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a timefor quiet prayer and meditation.

Share the GiftsIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you have par-ticipated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If youdesire to know the love of God that overcomes indifference and despair, if you desire the reconcil-

iation that overcomes estrangement and alien ation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. The bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the commoncup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grapejuice are served, grape juice is administered from the pottery chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available uponrequest in the East alcove.

Sending Out of the DisciplesPrayer After CommunionPresider Merciful God,All you have called us to your table

and fed us with the bread of life.Draw us and all people to your Son,our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Anyone in grades 8-12 is very warmly invited tothis. We drink coffee (and hot chocolate!), eatcake, spend time with each other, and discuss big, deep questions in a really open way. We start witha passage from the Bible, and let it prompt all sortsof conversations, as we think about what on earthit might mean, and what truth or relevance itmight or might not hold for us… It’s great fun,and all are very welcome: bring your friends! Wewill meet at the Cathedral in the Nursery Room.

18 The Fifth Sunday in Lent | March 22, 2015

Notes from The Rev. Brian HeinrichMARCH 22, 2015

My long time friend and colleague, the ReverendDoctor Brian Rude recently wrote, "From the timeI first went to El Salvador in the 1980's, I haveconsidered our ministry to be one of "reverse mis-sion," experiencing faith from a Salvadoran per-spective and learning from them, then passing thiswisdom and wealth on to Canadians and others, inorder to enrich and broaden and deepen our faith-lives and faith-responses."

From the conception of the Lutheran UrbanMission Society and throughout its almost 20 yearMission this "reciprocal mission" was also contin-ually in focus & in evidence. We brought oftenapprehensive suburban Lutheran and AnglicanChristians and an unimaginably diversity of otherchurches and other groups; students, seminarians, international guests, social clubs and labour groupsinto frontline encounter with our local friendsfrom the Downtown East side, around the sharingof food. Almost invariably, the faithful and servicegroups facilitating the meal, testified to how theexperience transformed them and they came torecognized they were the real recipents. We wereconvinced this mutual exposure would reconvertChristians by helping them recognize the Lord inthe face of the folks of this poorest neighbourhoodin all of Canada and microcosmic window onmuch of the rest of the world. Often, unforeseen, amazing, quixotically Spirited connections wereborn and developed.

Luke (16:19ff ) reminds us that the Lazarus right infront of us is the Divine opportunity for us to beconverted, reoriented.

As we imminently set out on pilgrimage, after theculminating celebration of the radical reorientation

of the Paschal Mystery and are sent out into theworld afresh, it seems to me that we have an oppor-tunity in what Deacon Liz has aptly recognized asour "street congregation." They have plenty ofnomadic experience. If we each took a moment tostop and encounter them what witness might theyoffer us?

Rather than answer that for you, and enumeratepossibilities from my experience, I invite you toengage in this practice yourself. Isn't that what thelenten journey is all about? About being (usuallyunwillingly) stretched beyond our normal comfortzones, to be surprised by encountering Christ inthe least expected, yet right under our very noseopportunity.

In the ancient church altars were originally raisedup on the localities where martyrs had made theirfaithful witness. As we now set out on our journey, recognizing altars in the world, take advantage ofthe wisdom and witness of our street siblings.

Assistant to the Rector for Street Ministry & Service
