PERFECT POLYPHONYThe Tallis Scholars and Gimell Records have so far recorded fifty-six albums. Some of the tracksfrom this library of material have become well known, either because the music in questionwas already an established masterpiece, or because ours was the first recording of amasterpiece which subsequently came to be recognized as such. Some of these recordingswere put together on a double album entitled The Essential Tallis Scholars (see page 39 of thisbooklet for details). Inevitably other tracks, which included some of my personal favourites,could not be included. Perfect Polyphony is designed to redress the balance – and it is aspecial pleasure to have the opportunity to do this in the year when we shall celebrate our2,000th concert.

Perhaps it will come as a surprise that Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli is included in thiscontext, since it is so extremely well established. However The Tallis Scholars have built up aspecial relationship with it, having released three recordings and sung 140 concertperformances to date. It was also the very first piece we recorded – on 17 March 1977 inMerton College Chapel – as part of Steve Smith’s finals portfolio for the Tonmeister courseat Surrey University. Many years later one of the tape masters was found in the back of acupboard, containing not only part of the concert performance we gave that evening but alsopart of the rehearsal. It gave me quite a jolt to hear what I had to say to the singers of overthirty years ago. This concert marked the beginning of my collaboration with Steve, withwhom I set up Gimell Records in 1980; and almost the beginning of my involvement withMerton Chapel. The version of Papae Marcelli included here is the third of the three we haveissued, released in 2007 and also recorded in Merton College Chapel.

Both Victoria’s Versa est in luctum and Gesualdo’s Ave, dulcissima Maria were released in1987, the year we won the Gramophone Record of the Year Award with music by Josquin.Both pieces have cropped up regularly in our programmes, most often as encores, as I like tosend the audience home in a mood of contemplation rather than whoopee. We last sang theGesualdo on the stage of the Royal Albert Hall in 2013, to mark the 400th anniversary of thecomposer’s death. Our Gesualdo album, from which this comes, was one of the first to bemade in Salle Church, Norfolk: we left Merton Chapel in 1986 for Salle in search of a morerural setting, eventually returning to Merton in 2005.

Our album of Jean Mouton holds a special place in my affection, since I took a gamble onhim. This was the kind of project accountants don’t like – both Mouton and his music wereunknown to the extent that, with the possible exception of the incredible Nesciens mater,

there was no headline event to shout about. I argued that it was our job and privilege to havethe chance to resurrect composers who were considered geniuses in their lifetimes but havebeen forgotten by simple accidents of fate. We had performed this kind of resurrection a fewtimes before 2012, when this album was made, most notably perhaps with the CardosoRequiem; but even I was unprepared for the success of the Mouton, who suddenly had a bigpublic. I include two of the finest tracks here – the exquisite Salva nos, Domine is another ofour standard encores in concert.

I suppose the same could be said of my fascination with Nicolas Gombert, who was alsovery little known when we took him up, though this time I was not alone in wanting topromote him. For me, as for my friends Paul Van Nevel and Bo Holten, he represented an idealof the Flemish style, dense without being cluttered, his textures original and emotive. Hisswansong was said to be a set of eight Magnificats, one on each tone, which apparently heconceived while rowing the Emperor’s galleys on the high seas as punishment for pederasty.All of them are elaborately worked, though number 6 is the most elaborate, containing someof the most intense polyphony of the whole period.

Alongside Mouton and Gombert I would list our album of John Browne as a high-point ofour career – again because we were putting before the public compositions of the highestquality, yet of little fame. Browne and Cornysh were the heroes of the Eton Choirbook periodin England (around the year 1500), a contemporary duo of equals and opposites to rival anysuch duo later, like Josquin and Isaac, Tallis and Sheppard, Weelkes and Gibbons. Every sacredpiece that Browne wrote was so substantial that we could only fit five of them onto thisalbum. I could have chosen any of them to include here, but went for Stabat iuxta because Idon’t know another work of any length which is scored for four tenor and two bass parts. Theresulting textures are just astonishing, especially at the end, where he goes almost jazzy withhis blue harmonies.

Sets of Lamentations have formed the basis of many of our concert programmes, alwaysappealing to audiences with their deep regret, and usually substantial in length. Tallis’ twosets have come to epitomize this genre for many concert-goers, though at the time they werewritten he was doing no more than joining in with a much-visited tradition of penitentialwriting. I have conducted one or other of them, with The Tallis Scholars alone, nearly 200times, and never tire of them. The polyphony is not particularly complex, yet there is alwayssomething new to find in it.

With the Brumel we come onto even more personal ground, since Caroline Trevor and Iasked for the recording to be played at our wedding. It might be thought strange to ask for atext of this kind to be sung during a service of celebration, but we did so because we had not

originally planned to record it and the impromptu beauty of the singing had acquired analmost miraculous dimension in our minds. We had needed a filler for the album and, havingthe music for this set fortuitously to hand, sight-read it onto the tape. It has become one ofour favourite tracks, with Caroline, unusually for an alto in our group, singing the top part.

The Ferrabosco Lamentations represent an inspired remaking of the English style, especiallyTallis’ style, by an émigré. I have always particularly admired the final ‘Jerusalem’ section –encouraging one to wonder whether Ferrabosco had come to regret his semi-profession asa spy.

I include Isaac’s Optime pastor because I remember having had a great time conducting iton the sessions, yet never having the occasion to conduct it since, despite my enthusiasm. Forsome reason it has eluded being selected for a concert programme – perhaps because of itslength, perhaps because of its scoring, or difficulty. It ends with one of the most thrillingsequences ever written, an irresistible plunging downwards to a low D, with a kinetic energyall its own. I have long relished the stylistic differences between Isaac and Josquin – they werea kind of chalk and cheese – and I hope that in 2017, the 500th anniversary of Isaac’s death,these will be explored. Optime pastor will surely feature.

My final choice is the four-part Missa Ave maris stella by Josquin. As will become apparentin due course, I have decided to book-end my career with a complete recording of Josquin’seighteen Masses. During the course of this project, still not quite finished, I came across such awealth of fine music that almost any of these pieces could have been put forward here. I chosethis one because I think it ought to be sung as a matter of course by any choir capable ofsinging, for example, Byrd’s Mass for four voices. It ought to be standard repertoire, beingcompact (unlike some of Josquin’s other Masses), written for the modern SATB choir (unlikemost of them), and beautifully logical in its use of the plainchant model. Those choirmasterswho have felt that the mid-renaissance repertoires might be a step too far for their singers,but want an accessible introduction to them, need look no further.

I hope you will enjoy listening to this personal selection of Tallis Scholars tracks. I could havechosen others – by Lassus, Sheppard, White, Clemens, Cornysh, Cardoso, Byrd, Rore, Tomkinsand more – though they are all out there for you to explore. And then, beyond our catalogue,there are countless more composers and more tracks to explore. Interest in, and love of,renaissance polyphony is yet young.

POLYPHONIE PARFAITELes Tallis Scholars et Gimell Records ont enregistré cinquante-six albums à ce jour. Certainesplages de cette collection sont devenues célèbres, soit parce que la musique en question étaitdéjà un chef-d’œuvre établi, soit parce notre CD était le premier enregistrement d’un chef-d’œuvre ensuite reconnu comme tel. Certains de ces enregistrements ont été réunis dans undouble album intitulé The Essential Tallis Scholars (voir page 39). Mais il était inévitable qued’autres plages, comprenant certaines de mes préférées, ne puissent y figurer. PerfectPolyphony est conçu pour rétablir l’équilibre – et nous sommes particulièrement heureuxde pouvoir le faire l’année où nous allons célébrer notre deux millième concert.

Le fait que la Missa Papae Marcelli de Palestrina s’inscrive dans ce contexte paraîtra peut-être surprenant, car sa notoriété est vraiment bien établie. Toutefois, les Tallis Scholars se sontforgés une relation particulière avec elle, avec à ce jour trois enregistrements et cent quaranteexécutions en concert. C’est également la toute première œuvre que nous avons enregistrée –le 17 mars 1977, dans la chapelle de Merton College – le portfolio de fin d’études de SteveSmith pour le diplôme d’ingénieur du son à l’Université du Surrey. De nombreuses années plustard, on a retrouvé l’une des bandes d’origine au fond d’un placard, avec non seulement unepartie de l’exécution en concert que nous avions donnée ce soir-là, mais encore un extrait dela répétition. Ça m’a fait un choc d’entendre ce que j’avais à dire aux chanteurs il y a plus detrente ans. Ce concert marqua le début de ma collaboration avec Steve, avec qui j’ai crééGimell Records en 1980 ; et il correspond à peu près au début de mon engagement avec laChapelle de Merton. La version de Papae Marcelli qui figure ici est la dernière des trois quenous avons publiées, parue en 2007 et également enregistrée dans la chapelle de MertonCollege.

Versa est in luctum de Victoria et Ave, dulcissima Maria de Gesualdo parurent tous deuxen 1987, l’année où nous avons remporté le Prix du Disque de la revue Gramophone avecde la musique de Josquin Des Prez. Ces deux œuvres ont figuré régulièrement dans nosprogrammes, le plus souvent en bis, car j’aime renvoyer les auditeurs chez eux dans uneambiance de méditation plutôt qu’avec des hourras. La dernière fois que nous avons chanté leGesualdo sur scène, c’était au Royal Albert Hall en 2013, pour le quatre centième anniversairede la mort du compositeur. Notre album Gesualdo, dont est tiré cet enregistrement, fut l’undes premiers réalisés à Salle Church à Norfolk : nous avions quitté la Chapelle de Merton en1986 pour Salle à la recherche d’un cadre plus rural, avant de revenir finalement à Mertonen 2005.

Notre album de Jean Mouton occupe une place particulière dans mon cœur, car j’ai faitun pari sur lui. C’était le genre de projet que n’aiment pas les comptables – Mouton et samusique étaient tellement inconnus qu’à l’exception éventuelle de l’incroyable Nesciens mater,il n’y avait aucun titre à mettre à la une. J’ai soutenu que c’était notre travail et notre privilèged’avoir la possibilité de ressusciter des compositeurs considérés comme des génies de leurvivant mais qui avaient été oubliés par de simples accidents du destin. Avant 2012, lorsque cetalbum fut enregistré, nous avions procédé parfois à ce genre de résurrection, peut-être de lafaçon la plus spectaculaire avec le Requiem de Cardoso ; mais, même moi, je n’étais paspréparé au succès de la musique de Mouton, qui eut soudain un immense public. J’inclusici deux des plus belles plages – le charmant Salva nos, Domine est aussi l’un des nos bishabituels en concert.

Je pense qu’on pourrait dire la même chose de ma fascination pour Nicolas Gombert, quiétait lui aussi très peu connu lorsque nous l’avons tiré de l’oubli, mais cette fois je ne fus pas leseul à vouloir en assurer la promotion. Pour moi, comme pour mes amis Paul Van Nevel et BoHolten, il représentait un idéal du style flamand, dense sans être fouillis, avec des texturesoriginales et chargées de connotations émotionnelles. On disait que son chant du cygne étaitun recueil de huit Magnificat, un dans chaque tonalité, qu’il avait apparemment conçus enramant en haute mer sur les galères de l’empereur, châtiment auquel il avait été condamnépour son homosexualité. Ils sont tous conçus minutieusement, mais le sixième est le plusélaboré : on y trouve la polyphonie la plus intense de toute la période.

Avec Mouton et Gombert, je ferais figurer notre album consacré à John Browne commepoint culminant de notre carrière – une fois encore parce que nous présentions au public descompositions de très grande qualité, mais peu connues. Browne et Cornysh furent les héros dela période de l’Eton Choirbook en Angleterre (vers l’an 1500), duo contemporain d’égaux et decontraires égalant plus tard des duos du même genre, comme Josquin Des Prez et Isaac, Talliset Sheppard, Weelkes et Gibbons. Toutes les œuvres de musique sacrée qu’écrivit Browneétaient si importantes que nous n’avons pu en faire figurer que cinq dans cet album. J’auraispu choisir n’importe laquelle pour l’inclure ici, mais j’ai opté pour le Stabat iuxta car je neconnais aucune autre œuvre, quelle qu’en soit la longueur, écrite pour quatre parties de ténoret deux de basse. Les textures qui en résultent sont vraiment étonnantes, surtout à la fin, où ildevient presque jazzy avec ses harmonies de blues.

Les recueils de Lamentations constituent la base d’un grand nombre de nos programmesde concert ; ils plaisent toujours au public avec leur profond regret, et sont généralement assezlongs. Les deux recueils de Tallis sont devenus la parfaite illustration de ce genre pour denombreux habitués des concerts, bien qu’à l’époque où il les composa, il ne faisait rien d’autre

que de s’inscrire une tradition très active d’écriture pénitentielle. J’ai dirigé l’un ou l’autre prèsde deux cents fois, simplement avec les Tallis Scholars, sans jamais m’en lasser. La polyphonien’est pas particulièrement complexe, mais on y trouve toujours quelque chose de nouveau.

Avec les Lamentations de Brumel, nous sommes sur un terrain encore plus personnel, carCaroline Trevor et moi avons demandé que l’enregistrement soit diffusé à notre mariage. Onpourrait trouver étrange de demander qu’un texte de ce genre soit chanté au cours d’un officede célébration, mais nous l’avons fait car, à l’origine, nous n’avions pas planifié de l’enregistreret la beauté impromptue du chant avait acquis une dimension presque miraculeuse dans notreesprit. Nous avions besoin d’un bouche-trou pour l’album et, comme nous avions par hasardla musique de ce recueil sous la main, nous l’avons déchiffrée pour l’enregistrement. C’estdevenu l’une de nos plages préférées, avec Caroline, chose rare pour une alto de notre groupe,qui chante la partie aiguë.

Les Lamentations de Ferrabosco représentent un remake inspiré du style anglais, surtoutdu style de Tallis, dû à un émigré. J’ai toujours particulièrement admiré la section finale« Jérusalem » – qui incite à se demander si Ferrabosco n’en était pas venu à regretter sasemi-profession d’espion.

J’inclus Optime pastor d’Isaac car je me souviens avoir pris un grand plaisir à le diriger lorsdes séances d’enregistrement, même si je n’ai jamais eu l’occasion de le reprendre depuis,malgré mon enthousiasme. Pour une raison ou une autre, il a échappé à la sélection desprogrammes de concert – peut-être du fait de sa longueur, peut-être à cause de son écritureou de sa difficulté. Il s’achève sur l’une des séquences les plus exaltantes jamais écrites, unplongeon irrésistible jusqu’à un ré grave, avec une énergie cinétique qui lui est propre. J’ailongtemps savouré les différences stylistiques entre Isaac et Josquin Des Prez – ils étaient unpeu comme le jour et la nuit – et j’espère qu’en 2017, pour le cinquième centenaire de la mortd’Isaac, elles seront explorées. Optime pastor y figurera sûrement.

Mon dernier choix est la Missa Ave maris stella à quatre voix de Josquin Des Prez. Commeon le saura en temps utile, j’ai décidé de clore ma carrière par un enregistrement intégral desdix-huit messes de Josquin Des Prez. Au cours de ce projet, qui n’est pas encore tout à faitmené à bien, j’ai découvert une telle mine de belle musique que presque chacune de ces piècesaurait pu être présentée ici. J’ai choisi celle-ci car je pense qu’elle devrait être chantéesystématiquement par tout chœur capable de donner, par exemple, la Messe à quatre voix deByrd. Elle devrait faire partie du répertoire courant, car elle est compacte (contrairement àcertaines autres messes de Josquin Des Prez), écrite pour le chœur SATB (contrairement à laplupart d’entre elles) et merveilleusement logique dans son utilisation du modèle du plain-chant. Les chefs de chœur qui pensent que les répertoires du milieu de la Renaissance sont un

peu trop difficiles pour leurs chanteurs, mais veulent leur en donner une approche accessible,n’ont pas besoin de chercher plus loin.

PERFEKTE POLYPHONIEDie Tallis Scholars und Gimell Records haben bisher 56 Alben miteinander produziert. EinigeTracks aus diesem Bestand sind berühmt geworden – entweder weil es sich bei der jeweiligenMusik bereits um ein ausgewiesenes Meisterwerk handelte, oder weil unsere die ersteEinspielung eines Meisterwerks war, welches daraufhin als solches anerkannt wurde. Einigedieser Aufnahmen wurden auf einem Doppelalbum mit dem Titel The Essential Tallis Scholarszusammengestellt (siehe Seite 39). Es war unvermeidbar, dass andere Tracks, darunter auchLieblingsstücke von mir, nicht in diese Zusammenstellung mit aufgenommen werden konnten.Es ist das Ziel der vorliegenden Produktion, Perfect Polyphony, das Gleichgewicht wieder her -zustellen – und es ist ein besonderes Vergnügen, dies in dem Jahr zu tun, in dem wir unser2000. Konzert begehen.

Vielleicht ist es überraschend, dass die Missa Papae Marcelli hierbei mit einbezogen ist, dasie ein so fest etablierter Bestandteil des Repertoires ist. Die Tallis Scholars haben jedoch imLaufe der Zeit mit bisher 140 konzertanten Aufführungen und drei Einspielungen einbesonderes Verhältnis zu diesem Werk entwickelt. Außerdem ist es auch das allererste Stück,das wir jemals aufgenommen haben – am 17. März 1977 in der Merton College Chapel inOxford – und zwar als Teil der „Künstlermappe“, die Steve Smith zum Abschluss seinesTonmeister-Studiums an der Universität Surrey vorlegen musste. Viele Jahre später fand sichin einem Schrank eins der Originalbänder wieder, und zwar nicht nur von einem Teil derAufführung, die wir an jenem Abend gegeben hatten, sondern auch von einem Teil der Probedavor. Ich empfand es als einen gewissen Schock, zu hören, was ich damals, vor über dreißigJahren, den Sängern zu sagen hatte. Dieses Konzert war die Geburtsstunde meiner Zusammen -arbeit mit Steve Smith, mit dem ich 1980 Gimell Records gründete, sowie fast der Beginnmeiner Arbeit an der Merton College Chapel. Die hier vorliegende Version der Missa PapaeMarcelli ist die dritte unserer drei Einspielungen des Werks; sie kam 2007 heraus und entstandebenfalls in der Merton College Chapel.

Sowohl Versa est in luctum von Victoria als auch Ave, dulcissima Maria von Gesualdo kamen1987 heraus; im selben Jahr gewannen wir auch den Record of the Year Award der ZeitschriftGramophone für unsere Einspielung von Werken Josquins. Wir führen beide Stücke regelmäßigauf, oft als Zugaben, da ich das Publikum lieber in nachdenklicher als überschwänglicherStimmung entlasse. Den Gesualdo haben wir das letzte Mal 2013 auf der Bühne der RoyalAlbert Hall in London anlässlich des 400. Todesjahrs des Komponisten gesungen. UnserGesualdo-Album, von dem dieses Werk stammt, war eins der ersten, die in der Salle Church

in Norfolk entstanden: 1986 verließen wir Merton Chapel auf der Suche nach einemländlicheren Aufnahmeort, kehrten jedoch 2005 schließlich zur Merton Chapel zurück.

Auf unser Jean-Mouton-Album bin ich besonders stolz, da ich mich mit ihm auf ein Wagniseinließ. Es war dies ein Projekt, das Buchhalter nicht mögen: Mouton und seine Musik warenderart unbekannt, dass es – vielleicht mit Ausnahme des unglaublichen Nesciens mater – keinesensationellen Vorankündigungen gab. Ich argumentierte, dass es unsere Aufgabe und unserPrivileg sei, Komponisten wiederzubeleben, die zu ihren Lebzeiten als Genies betrachtetwurden, aber dann, lediglich durch Zufälle des Schicksals, in Vergessenheit gerieten. Vor 2012,als dieses Album entstand, hatten wir bereits derartige Wiederbelebungen durchgeführt – ambemerkenswertesten vielleicht im Falle des Requiems von Cardoso –, doch hätte auch ich mirden Erfolg des Mouton nicht träumen lassen, der plötzlich eine riesige Fan-Gemeinde hatte. Essind hier zwei besonders schöne Tracks zu hören – das vorzügliche Salva nos, Domine gehörtebenfalls zu den Werken die wir in unseren Konzerten oft als Zugabe singen.

Ähnlich verhält es sich mit meiner Faszination von der Musik Nicolas Gomberts, derebenfalls kaum bekannt war, als wir uns mit ihm beschäftigten, obwohl ich diesmal nicht derEinzige war, der ihn voranbringen wollte. Für meine Freunde Paul Van Nevel, Bo Holten und fürmich war er ein idealer Vertreter des flämischen Stils – dichtgearbeitete Strukturen, ohne dabeiüberladen zu sein, und mit originellen, gefühlvollen Texturen. Sein Schwanengesang war wohlein Zyklus von acht Magnificat-Vertonungen, eine pro Ton, die er angeblich konzipierte, als erauf hoher See in den kaiserlichen Galeeren ruderte, was ihm als Strafe für Päderastie verhängtworden war. Alle sind kunstvoll ausgearbeitet, wobei Nr. 6 die aufwändigste Vertonung ist undmit die intensivsten polyphonen Passagen der Zeit enthält.

Neben dem Mouton und Gombert würde ich unser John-Browne-Album als Höhepunktunserer Karriere betrachten – wiederum weil wir dem Publikum Kompositionen höchsterQualität, allerdings geringer Berühmtheit, vorstellten. Browne und Cornysh waren die Heldender Zeit des Eton Choirbook in England (um 1500) – ein Zeitgenossen-Duo ebenbürtiger unddoch gegensätzlicher Musiker, welches durchaus gleichrangig mit späteren derartigen Duoswar: Josquin und Isaac, Tallis und Sheppard, Weelkes und Gibbons. Die geistlichen WerkeBrownes waren jeweils derart umfangreich, dass nur fünf auf das Album passten. Alle hättensich für die vorliegende Produktion geeignet, doch entschied ich mich für Stabat iuxta, weil mirkein anderes Werk bekannt ist, das für vier Tenor- und zwei Bass-Stimmen angelegt ist. Die sichdaraus ergebenden Texturen sind einfach erstaunlich, besonders gegen Ende, wenn esharmonisch fast jazzartig wird.

Viele unserer Konzertprogramme setzen sich mit Vertonungen der Klagelieder Jeremiasauseinander, die mit ihrem tiefen Bedauern und zumeist beträchtlicher Länge beim Publikum

oft besonders beliebt sind. Die beiden Zyklen von Tallis verkörpern das Genre inzwischen fürviele Konzertbesucher, obwohl sie sich ursprünglich lediglich in eine weitverbreitete Traditionvon Bußkompositionen einreihten. Ich habe die beiden Werke mit den Tallis Scholars alleinbereits an die 200 Mal aufgeführt und werde ihrer nie überdrüssig. Der polyphone Satz istnicht besonders komplex, doch findet sich immer etwas Neues darin.

Mit dem Brumel bewegen wir uns auf noch persönlicheres Terrain: Caroline Trevor undich baten darum, dass die Aufnahme bei unserer Hochzeit gespielt würde. Es mag seltsamanmuten, einen Text dieser Art in einen festlichen Gottesdienst einzubinden, aber wirentschieden uns dafür, weil die Aufnahme nicht geplant, sondern spontan entstanden war undder Gesang für uns damit eine ganz besondere, fast zauberhafte Schönheit besitzt. Es hatteuns bei den Aufnahmen noch ein „Füllstück“ gefehlt, und da wir die Noten dieses Werksglücklicherweise gerade zur Hand hatten, sangen wir es vom Blatt und ließen dabei das Bandmitlaufen. Es wurde einer unserer Lieblingstracks, wobei Caroline – was für eine Alt-Stimmeunseres Ensembles ungewöhnlich ist – die Oberstimme singt.

Die Lamentationen von Ferrabosco stellen eine inspirierte Neugestaltung des englischenStils – insbesondere Tallis’ Stils – durch einen Immigranten dar. Ich habe immer schon denabschließenden „Jerusalem“-Abschnitt bewundert, der die Frage aufwirft, ob Ferrabosco wohlseinen „Halb-Beruf“ als Spion bereute.

Ich schließe Optime pastor von Isaac hier mit ein, weil ich es in den Aufnahmesessions sogerne dirigiert habe, sich seitdem allerdings, trotz meiner Begeisterung, noch keine Gelegen -heit gefunden hat, es wieder aufzuführen. Aus irgendeinem Grunde ist es bei der Auswahlfür Konzertprogramme immer außen vor geblieben – möglicherweise aufgrund seiner Länge,möglicherweise aufgrund seiner Anlage, oder seiner Komplexität. Es endet mit einer dermitreißendsten Sequenzen, die jemals entstanden sind: ein unwiderstehliches Hinabfallen zueinem tiefen D hin, mit einer ganz eigenen kinetischen Energie. Schon lange finde ich großenGefallen an den stilistischen Unterschieden zwischen Isaac und Josquin – sie glichen einanderwie Tag und Nacht – und ich hoffe, dass sich 2017, das 500. Todesjahr Isaacs, die Gelegenheitzu einer tieferen Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Thema bietet. Optime pastor wird dabeisicherlich mit von der Partie sein.

Meine letzte Wahl fiel auf die vierstimmige Missa Ave maris stella von Josquin. Wiedemnächst deutlich werden wird, habe ich mich dazu entschlossen, im Laufe meiner Karrierealle 18 Messen von Josquin einzuspielen. Im Rahmen dieses Projekts, das noch nicht ganzabgeschlossen ist, bin ich auf so viel hervorragende Musik gestoßen, dass fast alle Stücke hierhätten vorgestellt werden können. Ich habe dieses ausgewählt, da ich der Ansicht bin, dass esvon allen Chören aufgeführt werden sollte, die dazu imstande sind, etwa die Messe zu vier

Stimmen von Byrd zu bewältigen. Diese Josquin-Messe sollte zum Standardrepertoire gehören,da sie kompakt angelegt ist (im Gegensatz zu anderen Messvertonungen Josquins), für diemoderne Stimmverteilung SATB (im Gegensatz zu den meisten anderen) komponiert ist undmit wunderschöner Logik die Cantus-planus-Vorlage verarbeitet. Jene Chorleiter, die das Gefühlhaben, dass die Werke der mittleren Renaissance-Zeit für ihre Sänger noch zu anspruchsvollsind, die sich aber trotzdem eine zugängliche Einführung in dieses Repertoire wünschen,finden hierin ihr ideales Stück.

Ich hoffe, dass diese persönliche Auswahl von Tallis-Scholars-Tracks Ihnen beim ZuhörenVergnügen bereitet. Ich hätte noch andere aussuchen können – von Lassus, Sheppard, White,Clemens, Cornysh, Cardoso, Byrd, Rore, Tomkins und weiteren –, doch stehen diese alle zurErkundung bereit. Und über unseren Katalog hinaus gibt es zahllose weitere Komponisten undTracks zu entdecken. Das Interesse und die Liebe für die Polyphonie der Renaissance sind nochjung.
