Hope Goddard - 2011 recipient of the Nancy Tokaryk Bursary Once every few years there is a female student with exceptional athletic ability and strong academics that graces the school of J.L. Ilsley. Hope is certainly a decorated female athlete and student, where she excels and raises to be the top player in every sport she chooses to play. Not only does Hope try her absolute hardest on the !eld and in the classroom, but she reaches out to her community in order to help and encourage others to pursue their goals. It is with great honour to nominate Hope for this scholarship, as she is most deserving of this opportunity. Please !nd the following achievements as proof of Hope’s merit and drive to excel.

“I wanted to let you know that Hope Goddard the player from JLIsley who won Nancy's !eld hockey award is most deserving. She is an excellent player who like Nancy loves the sport, and played it with heart and grit. Her Mom Gill Morrow was qiute the athlete (skier) in her day too. Gill herself now has MS and her many years of living with that disease has forced Gill to relie on her grit and determination as a former athlete to get through the rough days. I think this is the best sport story I have heard about in awhile. For me it made many connections and reinforced the good news story of the sport experience for girls and women”. ~ Liz Pace

Mini University Campers at Saint Mary’s

FHNS Coaching Session to Recreation Instructors A One Hour Introduction Session on Field Hockey with 22 Recreation Instructors took place in the South Shore Area. We started the day by explaining a brief history of Field Hockey, how it is known as hockey in most parts of the world. In North America we play Ice hockey and in the warmer continents they play field hockey. It is one of the most played team sports in the world and is an Olympic Sport. The game is very similar to ice hockey but the main difference is that instead of using both sides of your stick to dribble, you can only use the flat side. Focusing on this difference allows for a quick transition to the game. After a brief warm up ofFlush Tag participants were divided up into 4 groups, each person with a stick and ball were taught how to hold the stick, grip and how to dribble stick going over the ball. The following drills were then taught how to dribble, pass, pass on the move, shooting & a Penalty Shoot out using the Goalie. The session went well and the participants caught on very quickly to the game. At the end did a quick wrap up of the simple rules of hockey and how to keep the game fun and safe by making adjustments based on skill level and age.

On July 13th 20 participants took part in the Mini University Campers at Saint Mary’s. During this session the participants learned a brief History of Field Hockey as a University sport &Olympic Sport, it’s relationship to Ice Hockey and how it was introduced in NS in the Junior Highs and High Schools. Following thier intro they had a quick warm-up of tag and then started learning the game with their stick & ball. They were taught had to hold the stick, grip and how to dribble around the circle and then back, focusing on the return where they use the lower hand to control ball on reverse side. Participants also learned passing, passing on the move, shooting and had mini games. Overall the players “had fun”.

July 2011

This year, the league committee has had three clear goals. Create a safe playing experience. Improve sportsmanship and fair-play. Improve the social aspect of field hockey in Nova Scotia. These goals were the targets on day one of our meetings and continued to be so when we met for our mid year assessment. The primary discussion surrounding safety in our league, for several years, has been raised balls and how we officiate them. In order to manage this issue, we met with the Director of Umpiring and the team representatives and discussed the issue. The decision that was made regarding raised/dangerous balls was as follows. Our league will deem a raised ball dangerous under the following conditions;; The ball is within 1 meter of a player in any direction and either the ball is knee height or above and the player is less than 5 meters from the hitter or the ball is waist height or above and the player is more than 5 meters from the hitter. There was significant discussion surrounding this issue with the primary concern being that this did not take into account danger. Our surface does not always allow our players to control the ball and we determined that our primary goal must be to make the sport safer. As such we determined that it was up to the offending player to ensure that they could keep the ball at a generally considered safe distance from all players at all times. The most important aspect of this is that our officials make our calls standard across the board and that our players understand that this can be a difficult transition. In order to create an atmosphere of sportsmanship and fair-play, we have instituted a number of changes. First, we have created a more professional captains system. Not only will captains meet with umpires before games to discuss issues and after games to confirm statistics, but they will be responsible for maintaining their teams standard of conduct throughout the games. As is the case in other sports, captains should be the only individuals that consis-tently communicate with the officials and should do so in a respectful fashion. We have advised the officials that when players constantly complain about calls or make disrespectful comments about players or officials, these cannot be allowed to affect the game, as such, they are expected to control the game and use their cards when necessary. Finally, our goal is to make sure that our members can enjoy their experience. We hope that our recent decisions make this experience successful for everyone involved. On August 21st, from 8pm-2am, FHNS will have our 1st Annual Outdoor League Awards Banquet. It will be held at The Frigate in downtown Halifax. It will be an occasion open to members of FHNS, their significant others and their families. This celebration is designed to bring our member-ship closer together and provide a great experience. There will be food provided by the league and the awards will be given out at this celebration. This will include the normal awards for League Scoring Leader and League and Playoff Champions as well as newly designed awards for each team. We hope that we can continue to make positive steps forward to creating a league and an experience that all members can enjoy and we can continue to grow. ~ Mike Tanner

Umpiring In CalgaryI was selected to umpire at the recent u18s national tournament in Calgary. The tournament started with a fitness assessment and a 3 hour umpires briefing. The umpire’s management team that would help and guide us consisted of Dunn, Keely – FIH Grade 1 Hrytsak, John – FIH Grade Harrison, Matthew – National Programming Umpiring Association UK - Premier Panel

Umpiring duties were offered daily and it was agreed that umpiring appointments would be made according to suitability and not gender. We had a team of 8 umpires in the group 4 male and 4 female.

There was an umpire review after every game and a group discussion every evening, which helped me learn a lot about umpiring, especially game management and umpiring as a team.

The games I served in the umpiring team are detailed belowDay One Ontario v BC (Men)Day Two Saskatchewan vs. Alberta (Women) Ontario vs. Alberta (Men)Day Three BC Blue v Alberta Navy (Women) Ontario v BC (Men)Day FourPlay Off Manitoba vs. Saskatchewan (Women) Semi Final BC Blue vs. BC White (Women)Day FiveFinal Ontario vs. BC (Women)

I had the pleasure of umpiring with John Hrytsak, Matt Harrison both international umpires as well as umpires from BC, Ontario and Alberta – all who had umpired at u18s before.

I really enjoyed the level of coaching and gained a ton of information and knowledge from a very experienced umpiring panel. I had the opportunity to umpire two games for my regional grading which was successfully achieved.Umpiring the girls final was a super experience especially in a 2 – 1 game that went down to the wire.Hopefully another FHNS umpire will go to this tournament next year and prove NS umpires are right up there with the best.
