The planning for the Albury sesquicentennial has been finalised

( jigged and perfected) for this weekend.

There have been a few changes to that previously advertised. The DVD slide show (of about 500 historic photos) will now be

showing at the Albury Presbyterian Church on Duke St, and at the Albury Tavern during the day.

The Churches of St Martin (High St) and St Paul (Queen St) will be open from 10am -1pm. The inter-farm display bays (adults) will be in Room 4 (new block) at the Albury School and the

children's 'hobby collections' will be in the Library (old block), tea and coffee will also be available in the old block.

The netball will again be Albury v Fairlie, as Cave were unable to field a team. The J.A.B. 'ripper rugby' will now be on the Albury

Domain (half paddock). With a few away at the Sevens in Wellington it will be 'all hands to the pump' on the Rugby front!. If the weather is unkind the sports teams will change at the

following venues, Rugby- Fire station, Netball - Hall.

Prize giving will move to the Hall if wet. Photographs are coming in thick and fast for the DVD, which will be shown in an

'unfinished state', as there will be more work required to finish the project. You may order and pay for the DVD on the day by

filling out order forms that will be at both venues. Still a few farms missing, so please rattle the family archives!.

If you are concerned about New Zealand’s alcohol crisis costing us billions each year and harming individuals and families then now is the time to do something. The government is currently calling for submissions on the proposed law changes. 1 Getting to grips with the problem starts with recognising:

2 Alcohol is a legalised drug and here to stay. 3 Alcohol is a powerful commercial force. 4 We are not the only country experiencing harm but like smoking, good public policy (legislation) can assist with change. The World Health Organisation has set out a clear set of policy directives to do this:

• Price: End ultra cheap alcohol, beginning with a minimum price for a standard drink

• Access: End highly normalised access to alcohol, by restoring supermarkets to being alcohol free

• Advertising and Marketing: Ban all alcohol advertising and sponsorship except objective printed info

Drink Driving: End legal drunk driving by reducing the adult blood alcohol level to at least 0.05.

In 2009, over 3000 people wrote a submission to the Law Commission’s review of alcohol laws. The Law Commission listened to the evidence and wrote a report calling on the Government to overhaul New Zealand’s alcohol laws. Its advice closely follows the World Health Organisation

directives. The Government, however, has dodged the key recommendations.

At the same time, though, the Government says it is waiting for a public signal.

Clearly, this is the opportunity to have your say and play your part in creating a wave of pressure by getting friends, family

and colleagues involved. The deadline for submissions to the Select Committee is

February 18.

Lake Tekapo Community Board Following on from the elections last Nov, we are now into a new year and the newly elected Board of Murray Cox (Chair) , Ian Radford (Deputy Chair), Alan Hayman , Peter Munro and Peter Maxwell (Councilor) have been busy bringing themselves up to date with issues and looking to what needs to be achieved over the coming year.

One of the bigger projects last year was the work done in determining the options for a new community centre in Tekapo. Part of the process was to identify any potential sites for a new centre, considering at the same time whether to do up the existing centre. This resulted in land being identified on lakeside drive and a preliminary design drawn up in order to test the resource consent process. Resource consent was not granted. The next step is to consult the community for a way forward and some workshops will be set up in February to progress this project. If you want to be part of this process please email Murray Cox.

Landscaping work around the town has continued and some is well established now and looking good. New areas will be identified and enhanced. Great work has been done by the Enhancement Group at Murray Park and is an asset to the community. The Community Board will continue to look at town projects, with an eye on any future development in Tekapo, to ensure any projects enhance such development. Projects are likely to include the provision of public toilets, bus shelters, walkways, carparks and green areas. A graveled walkway from Alpine Springs to the village centre is likely to be first in line, eventually having a sealed walkway with lighting. Over the next 2 months there will be a meeting with the Community Board and town representatives to discuss Freedom Camping, establishing town guidelines and identifying any future areas for freedom camping. A meeting on Civil Defence response in case of emergencies will also be held. With people changes over time, it is timely to update our plans. Last year the community was involved in some very exciting projects including the Regional Park, playground, sun dial and footbridge. The Community Board wants to assist in any way it can with these projects to see them through to completion as they will have a positive impact on the town. We need your feedback, it’s your Community. Shortly we will have an update page for Tekapo on the Mackenzie District Council website. This site has copies of the minutes from meetings and we will use the site to give more detail and receive feedback from the community.

Chris’s Column from Lake Tekapo

There Was a Time…

My mother would have been 100 this year. Often we would marvel at the changes that she had experienced in her life-time – the advent of the motor car, washing machines, radio, TV, the telephone…! Mum was a telephonist in London Telephone Exchange prior to and during the World War II. She struggled a bit with the cell phone when she was in her 90s!

A recent birthday of my own brought the realisation of what fantastic changes have happened even in my lifetime! I grew up without a phone – the telephone exchange in our area of Christchurch was operating to full capacity. No room for new com-ers! Phone calls back to England were ‘booked’ well in advance and a neighbour’s phone was ‘borrowed’ for the big event. The family sat around the phone and had a quick turn at yelling ‘hello’ through a crackling line. Getting a connection to Guernsey for my father’s side of the family was an even rarer event. How easy it is now to keep in touch with family overseas.

George Coy designed and built the first commercial telephone exchange in New Jersey, Connecticut in January 1878. The switchboard was built from "carriage bolts, handles from teapot lids and bustle wire" and could handle two simultaneous conversations. Later exchanges consisted of one to several hundred plug boards staffed by telephone operators sitting in front of a vertical board ready to connect up a series of cords at the request for a number. The first telephone exchanges in New Zealand were established in Christchurch and Auckland in 1881. Dunedin followed in 1882 and Wellington in 1883.

Automatic exchanges came into existence in the early 1900s with the first automatic equipment in Auckland and Wellington in 1913. This merely improved the existing manual equipment. More equipment was ordered but World War I intervened and it was not until 1919 that the first fully automatic exchange was built in Masterton.

Rural New Zealand had a bit more of a wait, needless to say. A manual exchange existed in the remote Mackenzie from before World War 1. Housed in Takapo House a series of different bells would alert the manager to the need to connect a call. With the demolition of this historic building the exchange was in limbo until the group of local run holders joined forces in forming the small company of Tekapo Services Ltd.

By the late 50’s and early 60’s calls were far more frequent. A telephone operator was required – Jessy Irving, June Harkness and finally Ann Don. (‘I’m pretty sure it was that order,’ Roy Dockrill owner of the store and post office at that time, tells me). Then came the automatic exchanges. They were the responsibility of the Post and Telegraph Department. There’d be no need for a company to run an exchange, no need for a telephonist to connect up callers.

In 1963 the exchange became automatic in Tekapo but not without a fight. You might recall from my last column that the minutes of the meetings of the directors of Tekapo Services Ltd that they had had many a word with the Post and Telegraph Department about the right for Lake Tekapo to have its own automatic exchange. And the final indignity, after all the work that they and other locals had done to upgrade facilities, was to be told that Pukaki was to gain automatic status first!! But sense prevailed or was it just the sheer doggedness of the people involved? Tekapo did become automatic before Pukaki!

A building was constructed. (… relatively few stand alone exchanges were ever built; most were housed within existing or proposed post office buildings,’ informs an article on the web page: wellington.govt.nz/services/heritage/details). Lake Tekapo got a new exchange! Built alongside the existing store to the right, it stood there for many a year until it was moved across the road. The closing of the old exchange and the opening of the new was a grand affair. (‘It was quite a gathering,’ Roy Dockrill recalls. ‘The local radio came.’) Everyone gathered outside the new building for the MP Allan Dick to preside over the official opening. His wife, Betty Dick, spoke thanking the girls for the great task they had done and praising them as having been the lifeline in this remote and sparsely populated community. Allan and Betty Dick had previously owned Lillybank station, probably one of the most remote stations in the Mackenzie, before becoming involved in politics. They, more than anyone, would have understood and appreciated the need for an efficient and reliable telephone system.

World wide the telephone systems continued to be up-graded. Crossbar exchanges were installed in New Zealand from the 1970s, and electronic exchanges from 1982. All a lot later for rural communities!

More efficient and reliable? (‘Failing phone lines caused by an overheated telephone exchange have hindered Lake Tekapo businesses and annoyed residents…. The digital microwave radio system on a hill above Lake Tekapo suffered overheating in the extreme heat the area has been experiencing recently. The problem has never affected it before…’ states an article in the Timaru Herald February 1, 2006)

Early January saw Stephen (husband) heading down to Antarctica once again. The novelty of being on my own wore off after three or four days, leaving me feeling at a loose end with nobody at home to share my joys and problems with. It’s amazing how we can take people for granted, and Stephen’s annual trips to the ice are a timely reminder of how much I appreciate his support - especially in my new role as Mayor.

To the people who have given me positive feedback and support since the elections I would like to say “Thank you”. To those who have expressed concern about my abilities to do the job, particularly in light of my lack of rural experience I would like to say that I am willing to learn anything. I may not have much in the way of a farming background but I am interested in your concerns and your hopes for this district as much as I am for any other sector of the community. The Mackenzie Sky in February by Freidl Hale

By the end of the February, Jupiter, having brightly graced our night sky for several months, will be setting in the west just an hour after the Sun. Venus remains in the east in the pre-dawn sky, rising about 3 hours before the Sun, between 3 and 4am. Mercury begins February still visible before dawn but will soon be lost in the glare of the predawn Sun and will pass directly behind it on the 25th. Once on the other side of the Sun it will remain invisible in the glare of the setting Sun. Golden Saturn is much dimmer than Jupiter, but we are moving closer to it every day and it will be rising earlier each night, a little before midnight at the beginning of the month.

Our northern sky is full of interesting summer stars arranged in constellations. Upside down Orion the Hunter is still there following Taurus the Bull. Taurus’ head is an inverted V shape (he is also upside down), to the left of Orion who appears to have his bow drawn to shoot Taurus. The bright eye of Taurus is another red giant star with a slightly orange tint like Orion’s Betelgeuse. It is called Al Debaran which means The Follower in Arabic because it is following the cluster of stars known to the Maori as Matariki across the sky to its left. Matariki is known in many other cultures as Pleaides or Seven Sisters because of the bright stars visible to the naked eye from within the cluster. Of the hundreds of stars grouped in the cluster, around 5 to 9 of them are bright enough to be seen on a dark night.

Following Orion is his faithful hunting dog, Canis Major (yes, also upside down), which contains Sirius, the brightest star in Earth’s sky. A smaller hunting dog, Canis Minor, is also visible below Canis Major, but it is much less clearly a dog, as it is usually depicted as consisting only of two stars, one bright, the other quite dim. You may also spot to the right of Orion and low on the horizon, two relatively bright stars rising together in the north-northeast. These are Castor and Pollux, the heads of the Gemini Twins. Far to the north of us, the twins are also upside down. When they first rise their much dimmer tall lanky bodies extend almost directly up into the sky.

The moon is new on the 3rd, this new lunar month also the beginning of a new year in the Chinese calendar. The 9th Maori month, Hui-tanguru, begins the following day. On the 5th we pass directly behind the Sun from Mars and on the 17th we do the same with very distant Neptune. The next day, Galileo’s birthday, the moon will be full in the east at about 10pm.

Also on February 18th, 80 years ago, Clyde Tombaugh, working at Lowell Observatory in Arizona, compared two photos taken a few weeks apart and discovered an object that had moved. This object was dwarf planet Pluto. Then the most distant object known in the Solar System, Pluto takes 248 years to complete one orbit around the Sun.

On a few occasions in the past couple of months, while out doing stargazing tours, we have seen what is known as an Iridium flare. In all of my many many years watching the sky, I had never knowingly seen one until just this last November, and it was both very exciting and a little alarming. At first I thought we might be witnessing the violent death of a not-so-distant star, a supernova explosion (mind this is coming from someone who has never had the impossibly good fortune to observe such a rare event). But unlike a supernova, which could take a matter of a several weeks to dim, this flash of light, much brighter than nearby Jupiter, dimmed over the next few seconds and left in its place a barely visible moving dot which almost immediately disappeared altogether. This mystery sent me to the Internet where I learned that what we saw was sunlight reflecting off of one of the three main mission antennae of one of over 80 communications satellites operated by the Iridium Consortium. The antennae are flat, highly polished aluminium surfaces and, most incredible to me, there is a website which predicts when one of these brilliant surfaces will be angled just so and thereby visible from Earth, and from precisely where on Earth. Thus I learned that it was satellite number 45 launched in December 1997 that was my initiation to these events, and, remarkably, I have now seen two more. They can vary greatly in brightness, which leads me to believe that I may have seen a much more dim occurrence a few years ago.

Louise Wynns trip on the REES and DART TRACK

We completed the Rees Dart track on the 2nd of December 2010, and I promised to report on that run. It seems a long time ago, but is so very fresh in my mind, memories for ever! I did this track with my friend Jane from Palmerston. Mal and his 7in7 runnners were running it the same day as well. Was great to meet up with them at different points on the track and give them a hurry along!! We set out 15min before them, so there was the challenge to keep ahead! After Jane and I not sleeping a wink all night due to excitement or whatever you call it, we left Queenstown for Glenorchy at 4.15am and set off running into the early morning fog at 6.30am from the Rees car park. The day broke to another stunning day, light winds, not too hot. Devine! The Rees valley is truely magnificent. So much character with broken areas of bush, open tussock, wet lands and huge peaks all around us! The highlight in the valley was seeing a Whitetail deer. What a beauty she was. Our first stop was at Shelter Rock hut and our first gathering of the 7in7 runners. A full muster of them. 12 was the maximum he was allowed on the runs. A quick yarn, and them telling us they had been tracking us!! Off again to head up to the Rees Saddle. Breathtaking were the views. So easy weaving our way up using the well worn track, and only a 15min steep climb to the top. A little snow still hanging around. The views from the saddle were more than breathtaking, more...unbelievable. Mountains and high peaks everywhere. Every corner we went round was a surprise. Another gathering with the 7in7 runners at the saddle, taking photos for them and having snow fights!. Then Jane and I headed off on the decent down to Snowy River which was a little steeper. Down onto a terrace, which we were able to actually run parts of, after the rough travel behind us. We were so lucky to be there when all the alpines were flowering. Mount Cook lillies flowering everywhere plus several other native plants. A stunning journey we had down to the Dart hut, which is a very new hut with flush toilets and all the mod cons!. Was hard bypassing the turn off up to the Cascade Saddle. Next time! That is a whole day for that trip. Had a good sit down at the Dart Hut, and another visit with the 7in7 runners. Mal was feeling pretty tired and still a long way to go down the Dart. The rest of the Dart is mostly in the Beech Forest, getting out onto the Cattle Flats was good. Great to see the tops of the peaks again. We could jog a lot of the Dart valley, and stopped for the 2min silence for the Pike River miners. Just before the last hut, Hagens Hut, we could have curled up and had a sleep, after the lack of it. A sit down at the hut, more food, even though we were sick of eating and drinking, but we knew we had to put up with it, we recovered enough and were off again! Sandy Point Bluff was our next goal, and that was fun to walk over. Great views of the Dart river and a huge slip. More bush, but it changed to beautiful Red Beech trees. Was one of those spots that you would love to run along or bike, and here we were doing it, just a little weary!! The soft leaves and flat ground was very pleasant at the end of a long day! Round Chinaman Bluff and gradually out to the car park to the waiting crowd of 7in7 supporters. Whow, the end! 67km was the distance and 13hrs on the go! We waited for the 7in7 runners, but they were a good half hour behind us. Now late in the day and needing to get ourselves back to Queenstown, we left the sandflies behind. What a great day! Ian and Averil had been up earlier in the day to leave a vehicle at the end of the Dart valley for us. This track is by far the most scenic of all the South Island tracks, a must to do! Louise Wynn
