Composition :
Prof. Ratnakar Narale B. Sc. (Nagpur), M. Sc. (Pune), Ph. D. (IIT), Ph. D. (Kalidas Sanskrit Univ. ); Prof. Hindi, Ryerson University, Toronto. web : www.books-india.com * email : [email protected] Scripture Title : Gitopanishad गीतोपिनषद् The Divine Scripture of Gitopanishad is world’s first Sanskrit recension of the
Gita, composed wholly in Anushtubh Shloka chhanda of Valmiki Ramayan. Its brand new 1447 original sholks are in side-by-side union with the 701 verses of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. The scripture of Gitopanishad is neither a translation nor a commentary, but it is a devotional musical poetry on the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. Its objective is to answer the unanswered questions and question the unquestioned answers, while defining each yogic term clearly, in sweet musical language. While doing so, the aim is to provide a proper background and remove the misconceptions, wrong notions and missing links that linger in the commentaries on the Gita. This critical aim has already been grammatically fulfilled in the footnotes of the “Gita As She Is In Krishna’s Own Words,” by the same author. Hindi being the National Language of India and the most spoken Indian Language in the world, soft Hindi music is an interesting dimension of this work. For the insightful Gita lovers, whether they know Sanskrit or not, this English translated ocean of knowledge is a must.

INTRODUCTION
Gitopanishad of Ratnakar Narale is world’s first Sanskrit recension of the Gita,
composed wholly in Anushtubh Shlokas. Its 1447 sholks are in side-by-side association with the 701 verses of the Bhagavad Gita. The Gitopanishad is neither a translation nor a commentary, but it is a devotional musical poetry on the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. Its aim is to answer the unanswered questions and question the unquestioned answers while defining each yogic term clearly, in sweet musical language. While doing so, the core objective is to remove the misconceptions and the wrong notions that linger in the commentaries on the Gita. This critical objective has already been grammatically fulfilled in the footnotes of the “Gita As She Is In Krishna’s Own Words,” by the same author.
From the light of knowledge revealed in the footnotes of the Gita As She Is In
Krishna’s Own Words, one can see how misunderstood are the popular yogic terms, for example, Karma yoga as yoga of “action,” Buddhi as yoga of “intelligence,” siddhi as “perfection,” Brahman as “creator,” Yajna as “sacrifice,” Dharma as “religion,” Jati as “the Varna,” and so on. All such wrong notions are properly clarified and redefined in this book.
Because Hindi is the National Language of India and the most spoken Indian
Language in the world, soft Hindi music is an interesting dimension of this work.
In order to suite the average Indian voice, D-flat-Major Scale (Black-1-Middle-
Octave) is used for wtiting the music notations in this book. The tunes in this book are presented in their simple forms for the convenience of the average music lovers and music learners. The advanced music professionals may improvise them or change the scale to suite their own style and standard. The notations of each song are innovatively and conveniently given as music-words, for each word of the lyric, to use mininum space.
The original divine Shrimad Bhagavad Gita of Maha-muni Vyasa is a celestial
poem (chapters 25-42) in the Bhishma parva of Mahabharata. Here, the earlier
chapters of Mahabharata provide the history and background for a sound understanding of the divine dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjun. However, in the stand alone Gita, without giving this important context, the first chapter stands abrupt and a bit incongruous with the Adhyatmaic philosophy of the other seventeen chapters. Reading the Gita without knowing the pertinent history and nature of the characters, is like walking blindly on a path without knowing the direction and nature of the path. Therefore, like the Mahabharata, the Gitopanishad begins with the vital background of the Gita and the nature of its characters. This essential addition provides a proper introduction and congruency to the first chapter and the philosophical teachings of the rest of the seventeen chapters of the Gita.
The sacred poem of Vyasa is written in such meters as Anushtubh, Upajati,
Indravajra, Upendravajra, Viparitapurva, etc. which add a rhythmic flavor to the divine poem. The Bhagavad Gita is the most translated and commented scripture in the world. In order to impart melodic sweetness to the celestial poem of the Gita, the Gitopanishad utilizes magic of the raagas and chhandas. Gitapanishad is a devotional chapter in the epic poem of “Sangit-Shri-Krishna-Ramayama,” by Ratnakar.
The author expresses his humble gratitude to Narad muni, Sharada, Shiva, Parvati,
Ganesh, Rama and Krishna for their kind blessings for the success of this work. He would like to recognize the tireless help and inspiration given by his caring wife Sunita during the long course of this divine project. He is grateful to Sangitacharya Shri Dev Bansaraj, who awakened the music in him just when he needed it, as if pre-arranged. He would like to greatly appreciate Shri Jagdish Chandra Sharda Shastriji for giving his pracious time in going over the Sanskrit part part of this work.
For the insightful Gita lovers, whether they know Sanskrit or not, this English
translated work is a must. It will enlighten the Gita learners, new, average as well as the scholars.
Sanskrit is an ornate and poetic language. The immortal verses of its rich literature are composed by the ancient sages in shloka/ (and other chhanda/) su@tra/ an mantra/. The best examples of the vast shloka-literature are the epics of Ra@ma@yan<a of Va@lm&ki and Maha@bha@rata of Vya@sa. Similarly, the preeminent examples of su@tra-literature are the brahma-su@tra/ of Ba@dra@yan<a and yoga-su@tra/ of Patan~jali and the most common examples of the mantra/ are bij mantra/, mu@la mantra/ and siddhi mantra/. The mý word ‘s{loka’ comes from verb root þs{lok (Bvaaidý Aatmanaeý saký
þoLaaek‘ + Aca` ) to praise, to compose in verse. The anus<t>ubh is one of the
chhanda/ (meters). The shloka-chhanda is written in anus<t>ubh meter, according to the rules given in the following shloka.
‘oLaaek’’ PaP#> saòdaó dIóza|> Lazau ca paóØcaòma> taYaa _ Axar> saptaòma>ó dIóza|> ta\taIyae paRYamaeó paòde __
(The above definition is given by Ratnakar : in each s{loka, there are four quartets (pa@da), each with eight syllables.
The fifth syllable of each quarter should be short, the sixth long
and the seventh alternately long and short in the odd and even quarters). Please note that, all anus<t>ubh verses are not shlokas. Only a verse written according to above definition is a shloka. Other five anus<t>ubh chhandas, namely : Gajagati, Pramanika, Manvak, Vidyunmala and Samanika, are described in the Chaanda-shastra.
The ný word ‘su@tra’ comes from the verb root þsu@tr (cauraidý parsmaEý saký
þsaU%a` + Aca`) to string, to thread together, to formulate, to equate, to write
in short rule, to systematize. The su@tra/ are not composed in any meter, but are written in minimum words according to the rules given in the following shloka.

which includes the complete summary of the thought, which can not be criticized and which is all encompassing, is called su@tra, by the su@tra-
knowers) The ný word ‘mantra’ comes from the verb root þmantr (cauraidý Aatmanaeý
saký þman%a` + Aca` or zaØa`) to deliberate, to take counsel. A mantra are not written as a meaningful verse, but it is simply a series of characters, each of which may not have a meaning, but if uttered in a proper string (even the mantra/ which are to be whispered in ear), they have a secret power of achieving a desired fruit by arousing the inner energy of the receiver.
