What you are?Do you know

In today’s climate, nonprofit

organizations must be effective,

efficient, and innovative. The Center

leads our community in this charge,

offering a suite of programs that both

deliver a holistic response to abuse

and violence, and leverage valuable

resources through a broad array of

community partnerships. With a focus

on building the service capacity of the

Center for generations to come, the

staff and Board of Directors participated

in a thorough strategic planning process

last year. Following this work, the Board

has a renewed commitment to building

growth-supporting infrastructure,

equipping programs to tell stories of

success, and enhancing the funding

base. As Board Members work toward

meeting the demands of the future,

expect to see more evidence of

successes for the Center this year

and in years to come.

We thank you for your gifts of time and

treasure, and ask for your continued

trust and financial generosity as we

deepen the capacity of the Center to

serve our community’s needs.You are a marvel.Mia Henley

President, Board of Directors

The Exchange Club Family Center

“Breaking the cycle of child abuse and family violence”

is not a task for the faint of heart; it

is what The Exchange Club Family

Center works to do each day. If you

are reading this report, you know

well our community’s dire need for

individual and family healing: a need

that transcends racial, economic, and

social barriers. With every phone call it

responds to, each personal counseling

session it holds, and every life-altering

class it offers, the Center builds a

foundation for both short- and long-

term impact in the lives it touches – the

lives of your neighbors, your employees,

your community.

Since its founding more than 30

years ago, the Center has grown

exponentially. Initially staffed by three

individuals, the Center now boasts

more than 35 employees, 24 programs,

and an annual budget of more than

$2.5 million. Led by Executive Director

Barbara King and supported by an

outstanding professional staff and

Board of Directors, the Center is thriving.

Lauded as “top workplace” by its

employees, it continues to attract and

retain top talent, effectively serving

more clients each year. During 2013-

2014, this number exceeded 5,500

individuals and families. Sadly, there

are still many people in need, and the

human and financial resources at the

Center are limited.

Dear Friends

You are unique. Mike Fay

“I love how passionate our team of experts

is. When someone calls The Exchange Club

Family Center, they’re reaching out to a

caring person who is committed to helping

them get through one of the toughest times

in their life.”

Bill McWatters

“I give to The Exchange Club Family Center

because the numbers behind child abuse

and family violence are overwhelming –

they’re present in all ethnic and socio-

economic classes, and I know the Center

plays a huge part in breaking the cycle.”

Steve Mitchener

“I’ve worked with the Center for more than

20 years, just helping out wherever I can.

I’ve seen the difference our work makes

in the community. And I’ve experienced

that positive impact, too. I attended the

TransParenting class, and I can tell you that

the services really help.”

Tommy Condrey

“Since the very beginning of the Center, I’ve

known what a great influence we have on

the community. My eyes are much more

open to the cycle of child abuse and family

violence, but I also have a strong belief that

it can be broken. I’ve seen the Center help

families heal.”

Terry Johnson

“I’ve learned that through counseling and

compassion, lives do change: Parents can

better understand how to have healthy

relationships with their children and can

learn how to truly love.”

Charles MacCraken

“I really believe in the power of support. And

I love being an advocate for the support the

Center provides to the community. We really

care about people, and I think we’re helping

make some important cultural changes.”

SupportersMore than 30 years ago,

The Exchange Club Family

Center opened its doors to

begin breaking the cycle of

child abuse and family violence.

Since that day, supporters of

the Center have been tirelessly

working to help families in the

Mid-South.

Without the longtime support

of members in the community,

the Center would not have

the reach and impact in the

community that allow us

to change lives. More than

just financial donors, these

supporters are truly invested in

our mission and have provided

hands-on assistance for a

number of our programs.3

Longstanding

Page 4: The Exchange Club Family Center 2013 2014 annual report final 2013 2014

In her role as a counselor, Stacey is

known for her empathy. She credits

that gift to her time at The Exchange

Club Family Center, and brings that

same compassion to her job as a school

psychologist. Stacey is passionate

about helping children and families in

abusive situations, and she is committed

to helping break the cycle of abuse

by providing support during key

developmental periods in children’s

lives. More than anything, the Center

has given her a better perspective on

families affected by abuse:

“People think women stay in abusive

households because they’re weak. But

these women are the strongest I’ve ever

seen. Abuse can happen to anyone, and

it’s never justified.”

there has never been another child like you.

You may become a Shakespeare. The Real Impact

– Tony BledsoeThe Exchange Club Family Center client

Exchange Club Family Centerof The

“Because of this class, I feel like a seed coming out of the ground – able to grow because I can finally feel the warmth of the sun.”

Tony is enrolled in the Training

Intervention for Parents (TIPS) program,

which is designed for parents of

youth who are participating in our

Comprehensive Anger Management

Program. TIPS provides parents an

opportunity to explore their own

behaviors as causes and reactions to

their children’s anger management

issues.

According to Tony, one word sums up

his time in the TIPS program: priceless.

He feels honored and privileged to be a

part of the story of The Exchange Club

Family Center. The program has helped

him learn to voice his feelings and

approach problems in a positive way,

rather than burying his thoughts.

In Tony’s opinion, these lessons

have made him a better father and

a better person.

But more than anything, Tony is enjoying

the impact the Center is having on

his son. The two have improved their

communication with each other, and his

son has a better understanding of how

to interact with people.

“My son told me the other day about a

boy picking a fight with him. Instead

of engaging, my son walked away and

calmed down by listening to music. I

told him, ‘I don’t know if I could have

done that. You’re teaching me.’ When he

heard that, his face just lit up.”

And Tony feels that more people need

to know about the opportunities offered

at the Center. He knows people are out

there, just as he was, struggling and

looking for help.

“They need this information. And they

need to know that they’re worth more

than they give themselves credit for.”

A Michelangelo. A Beethoven. 7

for anything. The Court Appointed Special Advocates

(CASA) program is one of the services

available at The Exchange Club

Family Center. CASA trains community

volunteers to advocate for abused and

neglected children with cases before

the Juvenile Court. These volunteers,

with the assistance of Center staff

members, are appointed by the Juvenile

Court Judge to investigate the child’s

circumstances and report to the

Court their suggestion for the child’s

permanent placement.

After starting as a stand-alone nonprofit,

in 2013, CASA joined with the Center to

expand both programs and the number

of children we can help. Together,

CASA and The Exchange Club Family

Center have been able to provide more

comprehensive support for children

and families.

Programs That WorkThe CASA Program

Daphni IshakCASA Program Director

“I love being a part of The Exchange Club

Family Center family. The employees

have a wealth of knowledge and

information to share. They truly care

about the well-being of clients and their

families, as well as fellow staff members.”

Rebecca Lesley-PaulkCASA Volunteer Recruitment and Training Coordinator

“We do everything in our power to

connect our families to resources that

will help ensure long-term success for

them. And as a part of The Exchange

Club Family Center, we’re better

equipped to find those resources. I have

a bigger network from which to find

help for our families.”

Steve MoormanCASA Advocacy Coordinator

“We make a real difference in the lives

of children and families in Memphis

and Shelby County. The Exchange Club

Family Center is full of people who love

their job and faithfully serve children –

it’s very rewarding being a part of

that team.”

SINCE 1948

The Exchange Club Family Center is honored to have been selected as the charity of the Germantown Charity Horse Show (GCHS). 2014 marked the 67th anniversary for this wonderful family event, and for the past 15 years, The Exchange Club Family Center has been the GCHS recipient charity. The Center’s supporters, staff, and clients have a tremendous amount of gratitude for this partnership.

“The Germantown Charity Horse Show is run solely by volunteers who work all year to bring this nationally acclaimed all-breed show to the Memphis community. These volunteers raise the funds to produce the show with substantially all proceeds going to the Center each year. As past president of the Germantown Charity Horse Show, I know how critically important our working relationship with the Center has been for the GCHS. As a Board member of The Exchange Club Family Center, I am honored to witness these contributions at work in such an unbelievably meaningful way.”

–Lynda SmithBoard of Directors member of The Exchange Club Family Center (2013-2015).

The Germantown Charity Horse Show has raised more than $400,000 for the Center’s programs.

Since 1999
