Good afternoon, everyone, and wel-come to Cuthbury for today's South-

ern League Division One South & Westfixture with Larkhall Athletic. Pleasemake our visitors feel welcome today.

Larkhall have made a good start to theseason, winning three and drawing threeof their first seven games. They currentlylie in seventh spot, just two places outsidethe playoffs. And we'll be facing themagain in just two weeks, this time at theirPlain Ham ground in the FA Trophy.

Last Saturday's win over Witheridge wasa nervy affair with good football at a pre-mium although, to be fair, the strong winddidn't help. Still, the result went the rightway and Carl Preston's second half equal-iser will be remembered for a while. We've been drawn to play Blackfield &Langley here in the next round next Sat-urday. I know Steve Cuss took the oppor-tunity on Tuesday this week to have alook at Blackfield as they beat Newport5-1 and there's no doubt they'll providestiff opposition. It would be really goodto get a big crowd here for that one - AFCBournemouth are away from home thatday so if you know any Cherries fans at aloose end, drag them along to Cuthbury tosee some real football. And, remember,we'll have the Spurs vs Man City game onlive at lunchtime in the clubhouse and theNewcastle vs Chelsea game on at 5.30.

The match for Steve Moore takes placehere tomorrow with a 1pm kickoff withmany of Steve's friends turning out toplay with and against him. I'm sure it'll

be a great afternoon and it's a cause thatdeserves your support. There's more in-formation about the game later in the pro-gramme. Steve's going through a difficulttime just now so let's hope we get a bigcrowd and make lots of money for himand his family.

And next Wednesday, our Under-18 teamplay Ringwood Town here on the mainpitch in the First Round Qualifying of theFA Youth Cup. That'll be a big day forour youngsters and, as there's no FirstTeam action next midweek, why notcome along and cheer them on against ateam who on paper look the stronger. The winners of that tie will be at home toeither Sholing or Salisbury in the nextround in w/c 5th October.

The Clubhouse continues to be busy butwe need it to be busier! One way to sup-port your football club is to hold func-tions here; talk to club manager KyleSalmon or any director if you want moreinformation.

Finally, there's still room at the WTFCGolf Day for individual players or teamsof four. October 1st is the big day andBulbury Woods is the venue with every-one coming back to the clubhouse after-wards for a meal.

Enjoy today's game.

From the Dugout

Welcome to today's Evo-StikSouthern League South andWest fixture against Larkhall

Athletic. We extend a warm welcome tothe visiting management, players, direc-tors and supporters.

Last week's FA Cup win over Witheridgewas equally as tough a game as I expect-ed. Step 6 football in Devon and Corn-wall is of a high standard, and I was veryimpressed with Witheridge who had somegood players. Everything we did right inthe previous cup match against Coweswas missing from the performance. Welacked a bit of intensity and quality, andfound ourselves chasing the game at 1-0and 2-1 down. Mark Gamble's first halfheader from a Carl Preston corner wasvital as it kept us in the game.

The second half improved tempo saw usdominate territorially. Two quick goalsfrom Carl Preston and Mark Gamble wasenough for the victory despite Witheridgethrowing everything at us during the latterstages of the game. Cup football is allabout being in the hat for the next roundand we are delighted to be in the secondqualifying round for the first time in 12years and we look forward to anotherhome tie against Blackfield and Langleynext week.

The biggest down on the day was thefractured cheekbone Scott Arnold re-ceived in an accidental collision. Scott, who was operated on this Thursday, willbe a big loss over the next few months ashis consistency of performances have al-

ways in my opinion made him one of thefirst names on the team sheet. His role ofcaptain is another area we will greatlymiss and we wish Scott a speedy recoveryand hope to see him back playing in thenot too distant future.

Tomorrow here at Cuthbury at 1pm, wewelcome a number of former playersback to the Cuthbury for a friends of Ste-ve Moore match against the currentsquad. Steve, who has been a valuablemember of Wimborne Town FC over theyears, has been been receiving treatmentfor cancer and we are looking forward tothe game and to seeing some old friends. We look forward to seeing as many ofyou as possible here tomorrow.

For today's game we of course will bewithout Scott, but will have everyone fitand available for selection.Thank you for your continued support.

Enjoy the game.

From the Dressing RoomHi, and welcome to today's game with

Larkhall. After last Saturday's Cupties for both teams - Larkhall won 5-2 atBridport, scoring 4 in the first 28 minutes- it's back to league action this afternoon.

Last Saturday was an eventful afternoon. It's always a great feeling to win a cup tie,but seeing the skipper stretchered off witha bad facial injury was a real downer. Theincident was a complete accident, but ifyou're going to bump into a team-mate’shead the one you want to avoid is Oli's.Scott went into hospital on Thursday tohave a metal plate inserted into his cheek. He seems in good spirits and is talkingabout getting back on the pitch. We allwish him a speedy recovery.

Going into the game last Saturday, With-eridge were relatively unknown to us. Al-though they play in a Step 6 league, oursis Step 4, we knew from playingSt.Austell last season, that that's a falselevel for many teams in their league. Thelong distances to be travelled in the higherleagues seems to stop teams from thesouth-west going for promotion. With-eridge made an ideal start with that earlygoal from a free-kick. Because of the dis-tance, Harvs wanted just one man in thewall, and that was me. If their lad had hitit true, then Harvs would have saved it.But he scuffed his shot, and it curvedaway to Harv's left. When we got the goalback, a great corner delivery from Preso, and cracking header from Gambo, then Ithought we'd go on from there. We're areal threat from set-pieces this season, andwe've been practising them. But they wentin front again. The clearance from theback had a big bounce, the wind was gust-ing, and it caught Harvs out. I think the

main problem in the first half was that weplayed at their tempo, and not ours.

Steve wasn't happy at half-time, and a fewwords were said in the dressing room. Weplayed at a higher tempo in the secondhalf, and took control for the next 30 min-utes. Gambo and I have played together alot, and we set up Preso for our second, and what a great strike it was. Preso thencrossed for Gambo to head our third. Un-fortunately he landed on his face and hadsome bruises to show for it. We let With-eridge back into it for the last 15, plus lotsof time added on, but the boys at the backdid well and we hung on.

Blackfield at home is a good draw for usin the next round. Because of the leagueswe're in, we'll go into the game as favour-ites but Blackfield will be a strong side. They have some very good players and agood young manager in Howlesy. If weplay our game the same way we didagainst Cowes in the Preliminary Roundthen we can give ourselves a good chanceof progressing further.

Before that we've got a tough game today.Although we did the double over them lastseason, Larkhall went on to reach theplay-off final in their first year in this Di-vision. After losing at home to Didcot onthe opening day of the season, Larkhallare unbeaten in 9 league and cup games.Their most notable result in the league be-ing a 2-1 win at Taunton, with the winnercoming in time added on. So it will be an-other challenge today, but as players that'swhat you look forward to.

Enjoy today’s game.

Wimborne Town 3 Witheridge AFC 2 - 12th Sept 2015 - Dave Briggs reports

Wimborne came out on top in a closelyfought cup tie, in spite of a below par per-formance, thanks to goals by Mark Gam-ble (2) and Carl Preston.

Although from a level below Wimborne, the visitors made the more positive startand took the lead after only 6 minuteswhen a 35 yard free kick from MikeHumprhreys seemed to take a slight de-flection to beat Jason Harvell.

Witheridge had the better of things for awhile, but Wimborne began to fight backand Carl Preston went wide with a specu-lative shot and then had a volley headedoff the line. Sam Griffin had a cross whichwent just over the bar, and Preston againwent close with a first time shot wide ofthe far post.

After 28 minutes Mark Gamble equalisedwith a near post header from a corner. Buton 38 minutes Witheridge regained thelead with a strange goal - probably withwind assistance. Harvell rushed forward tointercept a high through ball whichbounced over his head. He managed to gethis fingertips to it but Jack Langford wasfollowing up to head the ball into the emp-ty net.

The visitors had the better of the rest of thehalf, and might well have extend theirlead, especially when Harvell had to tipover a 25 yard shot. But Wimborne hungon and, taking account of the wind, a onegoal half time deficit didn't look too bad,and perhaps better than Wimborne de-served.

With the wind and some words of encour-agement from the manager behind them,Wimborne made a much better start to the

second half, although they did suffer anearly setback when Captain Scott Arnoldwas stretchered off with a fractured cheek-bone after a collision with team mate IanOliver. Ryan Johnson came on as replace-ment.

After going close a few times, on 60 min-utes Wimborne equalised with a stunninggoal. Adam Costello sent a long clearancefrom his own half which was headed on byGamble to James Stokoe. He back-headedthe ball into the path of Gamble who, infull stride, swept the ball square to Prestonwho lashed it into the net from 20 yards.

Minutes later, Wimborne should havegone ahead. Gamble, with his usual deter-mination, stole the ball from an unexpect-ing keeper just outside the penalty areaand took the ball into the area. Almost un-believably he then hit the ball across theunguarded goal and out for a goal kick. But on 69 minutes Gamble found the backof the net when he rose on the six yardline to head in Preston's cross, to put Wim-borne ahead for the first time.

Wimborne now looked set for a comforta-ble victory, but the remainder of the matchwasn't at all comfortable. Witheridgecame back strongly and Harvell had a busytime in the Wimborne goal. The final 20minutes, plus an interminable 8 minutesadded time, strained the nerves of theWimborne fans, but the final whistle camewith the lead still in tact.

All credit to the Witheridge team who putin an excellent performance and will feelthey deserved more. And they’d be right.

Larkhall Athletic Football Club dates from 1914. In 1951 the club regained access to itshome at Plain Ham after it had been turned over to allotments during WWII. Since then,it has gone from strength to strength, achieving the status in 2004 as a Premier Club andin 2008 as an FA Charter Standard Community Club, the first club to achieve this recog-nition in Bath. This status was renewed in 2011 and 2014.

Initially the club rented the Plain Ham match by match. It offered a sloping pitch, a tim-ber hut for changing and a single tin bath for washing, a nearby standpipe providing thewater source. In 1962 a cricket team was formed and the club became Larkhall SportsClub. Around the same time the then Bath City Council granted the club a long lease onthe ground at Plain Ham. A small club house was erected in 1965.

In 1975 the main football pitch at Plain Ham was levelled to create a pitch suitable forsenior football. In 1983 the club house and changing rooms were doubled in size and in1989 the club purchased adjoining land at Pow’s Field which today is used by the YouthSection and the Sunday Veterans team.

In 1996, aided by a Lottery Grant, the club further extended and improved its club house. In 2004 Plain Ham was re-levelled, drainage improved and floodlights installed, all withthe help of the Football Stadia Improvement Fund. At the same time the car park was ex-tended and new floodlights installed on the training area. In 2005, with tremendous finan-cial support from the local community and members past and present, the club completedthe purchase of Plain Ham from the Bath and North East Somerset Local Authority.

In 2010 the battle with drainage of Plain Ham was once again a priority and in 2011 thehard standing was further extended to completely surround the pitch. At the same timenew protective fencing was installed in the bottom corner of the pitch, new safety railswere constructed in front of the stand, pitch side rails and posts were refurbished, a turn-stile was created at the entrance and new lighting was connected. To address ongoingdrainage problems the pitch was gravel banded from across the pitch. Funding from theFootball Stadia Improvement Fund helped towards this work.

To meet FA grading requirements, applications for funding to Sport England and Foot-ball Stadia Improvement Fund were successful, securing 50% of the cost of the project toconstruct new changing rooms and to extend and update the clubhouse to provide im-proved hospitality facilities for spectators and visiting officials. Work started in Decem-ber 2012 and the formal opening of the new facilities was celebrated with guest ofhonour the Mayor of Bath, Councillor Malcolm Lees, in August 2013.

In late 2013, inspired by recent developments on and off the field, friends of the clubcontributed to more facility improvements that had been identified in order to satisfyGrade E of the FA Grading requirements, including additional seats, more covered stand-ing, improved turnstiles and new outside toilets. This work was completed to enable the

History of Larkhall Athletic F.C.

club to accept promotion in our double winning centenary year. Further facility improve-ments, including a new ground boundary fence, pitch perimeter infill and a medical roomhave enabled us to satisfy the Grade D requirements. In 2014 the club celebrated its centenary year with gusto. Performances on the field pro-vided an appropriate backdrop, the first-team manager was selected as manager of theyear by the Western League, we were treated to a marvellous reception in the GuildhallBath hosted jointly by the Mayor of Bath and the Chairman of BANES Council, and re-turned to the Guildhall for a Centenary Dinner in September 2014.

On the pitch the first team have a long list of honours, including: the Somerset SeniorCup in seasons in 1975-76 and 2003-04, the Western League First Division Champion-ship in 1988-89 and 2008-09, the Western League Premier Division Championship in2010-11 and the Western League double - Premier Division Championship and Les Phil-lips Cup – in 2013-14. The Larks reached the last 16 of the FA Vase three seasons in suc-cession; in 2012-13 and 2013-14 we lost to the eventual finalists of the competition. In2014 we gained promotion to the Southern League. Our first season was a huge successand we reached the play-off final where we narrowly lost out 3-2 to Stratford Town. Wealso enjoyed a wonderful FA Cup campaign defeating Merthyr Town and Truro Cityaway before losing in a replay with Gosport Borough from the FA Conference.

Elsewhere in the club the 2014-15 season saw other successes, with the Reserve team justmissing out on promotion to the Premier Division of the Somerset County FootballLeague and the Ladies team winning the Somerset FA Senior Cup in their third appear-ance in the final.

In 2008 Larkhall Sports Club was recognised as the BANES Club of the Year by theChairman of BANES Council. In December 2011 we were selected by our local paper, the Bath Chronicle, as the local sports team of the year; quite an honour given the rich-ness of the local competition. In 2011, two of the club's longest serving officials wererecognised by the Somerset County FA, receiving the award of Somerset County FAVolunteer of the Year and a Somerset County FA Long Service Award. In 2012 the Som-erset FA added Clive Burge to our hall of fame by recognising his ‘Outstanding Contri-bution to Community Football’. In 2014 the club was once again selected by the localpaper for an award, this time as Senior Team of the Year. In July 2015 we were honouredto receive FA Charter Standard Community Club of the year award from the SomersetFA.

This season we are looking to build on the success and enjoyment of our first season inthe Southern League while recognising the very stern challenge that this will present. We offer to all of our visitors a very warm welcome to what is probably the prettiestground in the country.

Bridport 2 Larkhall Athletic 5 - 12 Sep 2015 - report from The Larks’ website

The Larks secured a place in the secondqualifying round of the FA Cup down inDorset with an emphatic win over West-ern League opponents Bridport.

The game was as good as won in less thanhalf an hour as the Larks treated thecrowd to a fine display of attacking foot-ball. Although the home side looked thesharpest at the kick off, the visitors’ firstgoal came on only 2 minutes when JamieLyons jabbed home following good workfrom striker Dean Griffiths. Next, MattThorne placed a brilliant chip into the boxfor Brad Norris, who forced a corner.Thorney himself then launched long rangeeffort that went just wide, and then Deansupplied Brad Norris who set up a passfor Joe Raynes to fire home from closerange into the top corner of the net.

Some five minutes later great skill fromenergetic Matt Morris saw the ball intothe box where scorer and assister werereversed, Joe setting up Dean to make it3-0 with a close-range strike. Bridportwere now on the ropes, and in betweentimes the Larks had two cast-iron chancesto extend the lead still further that theydidn't exploit. The best goal of all sevenscored in the game was the Larks' fourth,an absolute belter from Jamie Lyons from30 yards out, running onto a ball suppliedby Dean.

Bridport rallied towards the end of thehalf and grabbed one back when messy

defending exposed Kyle Phillips. Brid-port's shot from number 9 Tom Richard-son off a free kick took a deflection offour keeper (who redeemed himself withan excellent fingertip save immediatelyafterwards) to make it 4-1 at the break.

Bridport looked more determined at thestart of the second half and for a spell wewere playing rather deep. Their number 9Tom Richardson missed the goal when achance presented itself and then the intro-duction of Jack Allward for Matt Ralphon 55 minutes gave the Larks anotherthreat down the right wing to trouble thehosts afresh.

The Larks' fifth and final goal came 15minutes after the restart: following a half-chance that fell to Brad Thorney made nomistake with a diagonal strike into the farcorner of the net. Jack nearly made it 6-1with a great effort that flew in from thewing and was bundled out for a corner, then a lovely full stretch header from Bradwent only narrowly wide. The home sideagain got a consolation goal towards theend of the half when Richardson steered afree header into the net, but in reality theLarks were the much stronger side on theday.

Man of the match was Joe Raynes, whoworked extremely hard in both attack anddefence and took his goal very well.

Wimborne welcomed South Wiltshire toBlandford for the first of two planned fix-tures in the JPL cup. Going by the last 3fixtures this was going to be a close foughtbattle with some entertaining football.

Wiltshire come out of the blocks the betterorganised, and after some early attackswent ahead with a great goal by LucasHamill. Wiltshire completely dominatedthe quarter and by the end of it had trebledtheir lead as Hamill scored all three.

For the second quarter, Wimborne suc-cessfully tried a different game plan tocontain Wiltshire’s attacking force, whichkept the score at 3-0.

Encouraged by this, Wimborne played totheir strengths in the 3rd Quarter. Howev-

er, Wiltshire continued their dominatingplay and Rae scored a cracking goal from25yds, which the Wimborne keeper had nochance of stopping. The game continued tobe played at a high tempo, but it was oneof those days when Wimborne were nomatch for their in-form opponents.

Wimborne’s Ben Knight got on the scoresheet after a tap-in from close range, andLiam Murphy-Parry also scored but thegame to end up 6.2 to Wiltshire.

This game will be discussed at length inWimborne’s training session to see whatcan be learnt and improved on. The coach-ing staff congratulate Jason and his lads ona well deserved win.

U15 JPL - Wimborne Town 2 South Wiltshire 6 - 12 Sep - David Boult reports

Dorchester Town Ladies 5 Wimborne Town Ladies 2 - 13 Sep - Mark Joyce reports

The league campaign kicked off with a tripto Dorchester, last season’s league runnersup. Early pressure from Dorchester gaveindications of the pace of their attackers, particularly down the left. We createdchances with both Holly and Caitlinthreading balls through for Leigh Bartlett.Lucy Cuff did all but score as her maizyrun from fullback took her to the edge ofthe box, but didn’t really test the keeper. After 25 minutes uncertainty in our de-fence led to a good finish in the top corner. We continued creating chances with Jesshitting both posts. A fantastic save fromErin and a brilliant save off the line fromPoppy kept us in the mix.

In the second half we started brightly withSophie and Jess taking the game to ourhosts. After mounting pressure CaitlinSteele fired home from 25 yards. We hadthe upper hand at this stage, but against therun of play, we conceded again as theirstriker outpaced our centre backs.

More chances for us with Jess and Caitlinboth going close and Lucy pushing for-ward from full back, but it was Caitlin, again scoring to equalise with 20 minutesto go. We created chances with Sophienearly tapping in at the back post aftergood work from Hollie. Then Dorchester scored again, with an al-most identical goal to the last, 3 - 2Minutes later another with a floated shotfrom the right hand side of the box, catch-ing Erin off her line. Another attack fromDorchester brought out the best of ourkeeper palming a shot over the bar.An injury to Lucy brought Ella Dunfordinto action for the first time this season.Another debut for Shelby Leonard replac-ing Leigh and a couple of half chancescame our way before they wrapped up thegame with a 3rd almost identical goalthrough the middle.

The score line didn’t reflect the game, andwe’ll learn a lot from it.

WELLING UNITED striker Sahr Kabbacould end up winning you a few bob in thefuture if you’re a regular at pub quizzes. The foolish forward became the first play-er to be charged by the Football Associa-tion for 'allegedly exaggerating or feigningan injury which directly led to an oppo-nent being dismissed'.

Diving, simulation, cheating. Whateveryou want to call it, it’s the latest epidemicto invade our game and it has slowly start-ed making more of an impact over the lastdecade. While it has mostly been reservedfor the top level and the overpaid merce-naries in the Premier League, it has startedto trickle down. Much faster than the Pre-mier League’s billions have, that’s forsure! Of course we all like to think ourgrass-roots game is immune and sacro-sanct but this unfortunate incident hasproved it isn’t.

Going down in the fashion Kabba did wasrisky to begin with but knowing the gamewas being shown live on BT Sport? That’stantamount to sporting suicide.Ritchie Sutton’s ‘elbow’ was neither dan-gerous nor enough to send a grown manflying to the floor holding their face. Espe-cially seeing as it was nearer his chest.Tranmere Rovers fans have rightly hadtheir say on social media. You can’t sayfor certain they would have held onto their1-0 lead if Sutton had rightly remained onthe pitch. But you can definitely say itcan’t have helped. It gave Welling impetusand those two points could end up beingvital come the end of the season.

Justice has been done - well as much as itcan - with Kabba receiving a three-matchban and a fine of £250 after Sutton's redwas rescinded.

Under the FA’s new policy 'If the dis-missed player is successful in overturninghis sending-off and it is clear that the op-posing player had not, for example, beenstruck as implied/claimed or at all, then adisciplinary charge may follow'.

Wembley chiefs get a lot of stick, andsome is definitely warranted, but hats offto them for trying to stamp down on Kab-ba’s kind of acting that is more suited tothe stage than the football pitch. It will beinteresting to see, however, how long itwill take for a Premier League player toreceive the same charge.

When reading the initial news I also had tospare a thought for referees. Yes, refereeCraig Hicks was obviously wrong in send-ing Sutton off. Assistant Ian Parsons hadeven advised him about the ‘elbow’.Officiating is not an easy job and with theamount of cameras seemingly fixated onevery game up and down the country, it’sbecome easier than ever to lament poordecisions. But players trying to fool themonly makes their jobs harder.

Reputations are quickly made, though, andwho will Kabba and the Wings have toblame if referees are a little less willing topoint to the spot in the future with theTranmere incident so widely talked about? It’s a shame for the talented Kabba, whohas now become a quiz question answer.

But it’s also a great shame for the youngand energetic Wings - who continue topluck talented players out of nowhere -and 19-year-old captain Sam Corne. His stunning equaliser was good enough tofeature at the very top of the game - andthat’s the sort of thing we should be talk-ing about.
