A s thus he walked along with a brisk step and a merry whistle, he came suddenly upon some

foresters seated beneath a great oak tree. Fifteen there were in all, making themselves merry with feasting and drink-ing as they sat around a huge pasty, to which each man helped himself, thrusting his hands into the pie, and washing down that which they ate with great horns of ale which they drew all foaming from a barrel that stood nigh. Each man was clad in Lincoln green, and a fine show they made, seated upon the sward beneath that fair, spreading tree. Then one of them, with his mouth full, called out to Robin, "Hulloa, where goest thou, little lad, with thy one-penny bow and thy farthing shafts?"

Thank you, good friends of OWS!

Thank you to the students at OWS who are our cause in celebrating and supporting our school this evening. It is the joy and curiosity that you show in your journey through the depths of Waldorf Education that bring purpose to my work. Thank you to the parents, grandparents and greater community members who are joining us tonight for a “merry feast in the forest.” We are so grateful you are here! Thank you for our many community sponsors. Your heartfelt support of our school is so important to us. To our numerous donors this year, your generosity of both time, talent and treasure speaks volumes to the strength of our community’s commitment to our students and our school. Thank you! To our dedicated and cherished faculty and staff―you have embraced this year’s auction with the grace, generosity, and enthusiasm you put into all you do. Thank you! Thanks to Laura Michalek, Fundraising Auctioneer, for your enthusiastic support of our school and your wealth of experience. I raise my stein to you. Here’s to our merrymaking success! To our excellent staff of volunteers―it takes so many hands and hearts to make this event happen. I am so thankful to each of you who offered your time and talents in support of our school. To the steadfast, smart, and opinionated members of the Fundraising Committee―you have made both the creative and pragmatic planning of this event a whole lot of fun. Meg, your joy and enthusiasm are contagious; Joy, your attention to detail and willingness to help are second to none; Jolene, your practicality and wit are always welcome; Cassie, I am so thankful for your thoughtful and creative problem solving; Robin Melcher, you make “mole hills out of my mountains” and always bring me down to earth; Ellen Mahoney, thank you for your wit, dedication, humor, hard work and friendship. We make a great team! And lastly to my family, who have managed pretty well in my absence, thank you for your love and support. Erica Merrill, Fundraising Event Coordinator

Fundraising Auctioneer Laura Michalek still relies on the endurance and discipline she possessed when at the age of 15, she was the first female winner of the Chicago Marathon. While Ms. Michalek has hardly missed a day of running since then, it’s this intention to excel at what she loves that is most evident. “To me Auctioneering is about giving a lot of yourself, before and during the event, in a way that most folks wouldn’t expect.” Her style, fundraising insight, and commitment to her clients, and their mission, not only sets her apart, but has created a career beyond Ms. Michalek’s wildest dreams. “I’ve always been deeply interested in how non-profits I care about are going to sustain themselves, so it is nothing less than a thrill to know I can personally and professionally be part of that.” For 15 years prior to becoming a full time Fundraising Professional, Ms. Michalek owned and operated several nationally recognized vintage modern furniture stores in Seattle. “My critical eye, intuition, and energy level has been pretty consistent all these years, so whenever I set out to do something, it’s the same set of skills, just a slightly more developed new chapter.” As the youngest winner in the history of the Chicago Marathon, it has not been lost on Ms. Michalek that this experience informed her whole life. “When I start Auctioneering, it’s like being in the starting block all over again, and I still set out to win, however this time it’s for the organization I’m representing.”
