    PART A : THE EVALUATION REPORT

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

    According to Swami Vivekananda, Real education is that which enables aperson to stand on his own legs. With this in mind the Government First GradeCollege, Holehonnur was established on 26thAugust 1991 to fulfil the long standingneed of the people of this region. In the beginning the college was housed in thesocial welfare department hostel at Holehonnur with just 45 students from the Artsand Commerce departments. Due to lack of students strength the Commercedepartment was forced to be closed in the year 1997. Once the college shifted to itsown building in 1992 to the outskirts of the town, the intake of students increasedfrom year to year and more courses were offered. With assistance from the Stategovernment and the UGC, the college now has sufficient classrooms, a wellequipped computer lab, a network resource center and a library with over 22,000

    books. Internet facility is also provided to teachers and students. At present thestrength of the college is 533 of which almost 60% are girls. The college offers 3 UGcourses B.A, B.Com and B.B.M. Due to poor intake the B.Sc course introduced inthe year 2009-10 had to be discontinued in 2012-13. However, efforts are on torevive the course. We are proud to declare that three students of our college haveobtained ranks in the Humanities section at the university level.

    The college has already undergone the process of NAAC accreditation in theyear 2009 and was awarded the C grade. The college has been recognized undersection 2(f) and 12(b) of the UGC act in 2001.

    Criterion 1: Curricular aspects

    The curriculum is the foundation of the educational system. It provides aframework for the educational activities to be conducted systematically in aninstitution.

    The curriculum is designed by the boards of studies of the KuvempuUniversity to which the college is affiliated. Some of our teachers have also workedas members of the board of studies and textbook preparation committees. Theteachers air the feedback given by the students on the curriculum in their respectiveteachers forums.

    Various committees, formed by the principal, at the beginning of everyacademic year assist in effective implementation of the curriculum.

    Criterion 2: Teaching, learning and evaluation

    The students are offered three UG courses- B.A, B.Com and BBM. Allstudents who seek admission are given admission according to the Universityguidelines. Students opting for B.A course can choose from three combinations-HEP, HEK and HES. Students participation in learning is encouraged by guidingthem to write assignments and present papers in the classroom. State levelseminars have been organized wherein students have had the experience oforganizing and presenting papers in a seminar. A number of special lectures have

    helped the students obtain various soft skills essential for employability and todevelop themselves into better human beings. The teachers have also attended

    seminars, workshops, conferences and training programmes to hone their teachingskills.

    Criterion: III Research, Consultancy andExtension

    Research has always been encouraged in our institution though we offeronly UG courses. Four of our teachers have been awarded Ph.D. and two more havealready registered for research. Four of our teachers have taken up minor projectsand one a major project. Thus students are also encouraged to present papers in theclassroom and seminars organized in the college.

    Free consultancy is offered by the Commerce department in mattersrelating to income tax. Our teachers have also contributed as resource persons incoaching candidates for NET/SLET. Counselling related to personal problems,difficulty in studies and career guidance is offered free to students.

    Our students participate with enthusiasm in all curricular and co-curricularactivities. NSS and The Red Cross Society organize blood donation camps. Ourstudents have donated blood whenever required. The students have alsoparticipated in various awareness programmes.

    Criterion: IV Infrastructure and Learning Resource

    From a five room building the college has grown into a spacious one with18 class rooms, 3 staff rooms, a principal chamber, a library, an office room, acomputer lab, a Physics lab, 2 sports rooms, an auditorium and a ladies rest room.

    We have sufficient furniture. Basic amenities such as drinking water, separate toiletsfor women and a canteen is available.

    The college has procured 57 computers to help students becomecomputer literates. A network resource centre and internet facility is also available.Interactive boards and LCD projectors are used for teaching. A diesel generator andUPS have been installed for uninterrupted power supply.

    Criterion: V Student Support and Progression

    The students are provided guidance right from admission to a course inthe college to what after graduation. The prospectus of the college offers informationabout courses available, details of fees to be remitted and facilities provided TheAdmission committee helps the students choose the course. After admission anorientation programme is organized for the new entrants. They are introduced to thestaff who provide information about their department, NSS, library, sports and thefunction of various committees. The students welfare officer receives the grievancesof the students and redresses it with the help of the staff. The warden of thegovernment hostels are invited to provide information about admission and facilitiesavailable. Details of scholarships students can avail are also made known. Thelibrary resources and the network resource center can be utilized by the students.Special training is given to students interested in sports and our students have

    performed well in intercollege sports meet at the university level.

    Recruiters from Shivamogga provide information on job opportunitiesand train students to face interviews. A few of our students have been employed andsome who received offer letters have preferred to continue their studies. On anaverage 20% of our students pursue higher studies of which 40% are girls.

    Criterion VI: Governance, Leadership and Management

    Ours being a government college the management is in the hands of theprincipal assisted by the staff, who form the College Council. Studentsrepresentatives are also involved in decision making by nominating them to variouscommittees. A College Development Committee is constituted with the local MLA asits ex-officio chairman and members nominated by the MLA as per governmentrules. This body helps in the development of the college by involving the localbodies.Various committees formed by the principal contribute to effectivemanagement.

    Criterion VII: Innovation and Best Practices

    The college has always strived to adopt innovations in teaching. Some ofthe best practices introduced by the college include blood donation camps,awareness programmes , women empowerment, special coaching classes for slowlearners and financial assistant to poor students.
